Dear Reader,

Here comes the holiday season! Seeing the beautiful holiday decorations throughout the stores and feeling the chill of winter coming reminds me of the anticipation I used to feel for this holiday when I was a child. I love decorating the house with stockings, lights, and greenery, choosing and decorating the tree, the woodsy smell of evergreen throughout our home, finding and giving gifts, baking and decorating holiday cookies, and all our traditions we practice year after year. Like no other time of the year, the holiday season is when parents are focused on toys. You likely want to make Christmas magical, but don’t want to regret a potential mountain of toys that are abandoned in the back of the closet before the New Year. On page 8, author Janeen Lewis gives a list of fun experience gift ideas and then pairs them with a tangible gift item for under the tree. Check out, “Not All Presents Come in a Box,” for ideas for sports fans, fashionistas, future foodies, book lovers, and more!

Along with our monthly calendar on page 14, we are also featuring family-friendly holiday festivities. Don’t miss page 10 where we’ve made a list—and checked it twice—of parades, lights, festivities, and more! Find an event happening in your area and go have fun enjoying all that the Valley has to offer!

Central California Parent presents the tenth annual 12 Days of Giveaways and we want all our readers to participate! Make your holiday jolly by winning a toy that your children (and whole family!) will love. Visit ccparent.com to see our full list of giveaways and to enter for a chance to win!

Happy Holidays from our family to yours!

An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare HealthWatch

Two Steps to Save a Life

More than 350,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur annually outside hospital settings. However, a hands-on emergency intervention like cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), especially if performed immediately, can double or triple the chance of survival.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), 70% of cardiac arrests—electrical malfunctions in the heart that cause an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and disrupt the flow of blood to the brain, lungs and other organs—occur at home, but often family and friends who witness a child, spouse, parent, or friend going into cardiac arrest hesitate to perform potentially lifesaving CPR for fear of making the situation worse.

"By equipping people with Hands-Only CPR training, we are empowering them to spring into action if a loved one needs help, as the majority of cardiac arrests occur at home," said Dr. Anezi Uzendu, M.D., interventional cardiologist and AHA volunteer.

As part of its Hands-Only CPR campaign, nationally supported by the Elevance Health Foundation, the AHA aims to increase awareness about the importance of bystander CPR and offers these two simple steps:

1. Call 911.

2. Push hard and fast in the center of the chest of the individual experiencing cardiac arrest.

Using the beat of a familiar song with 100–120 beats per minute, such as "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees, can help you stay on pace with the necessary compressions.

"Being able to efficiently perform Hands-Only CPR in the moment can mean the difference between life and death, and by following these two simple steps we can increase someone's chance of survival from cardiac arrest," said Shantanu Agrawal, M.D., board certified emergency medicine doctor and chief health officer at Elevance Health. "As a longstanding supporter of the AHA, we remain focused on working together to improve health inequities in our communities by expanding access to training and increasing the number of people who learn and feel confident performing Hands-Only CPR to save lives."

Visit heart.org/CPR to find more information, watch a livestream video demonstration of Hands-Only CPR, or download a first aid smartphone app.

Nurturing Parenting Classes: Your Baby Didn’t Come with a Manual

Whether you’re a new parent or your child is in their teens, parenting classes can be helpful to anyone who wants to learn more about handling the daily challenges of raising kids. In nurturing parenting classes, parents and children are actively involved in improving individual behaviors and the family dynamic! Lessons focus on family life skills, including healthy communication, anger management, and discipline.

As a new parent, parenting classes will give you the ABCs of parenting, guiding you through the first stages of your baby's life. You may also learn from other parents of infants and toddlers and experts in the field of parenting.

Here are a few benefits of parenting classes.

Reduce family stress: The stress you feel as a parent to a new baby can be felt by your whole family—particularly the change in sleep schedules! A parenting class can help reduce family stress by teaching you new coping skills and how to adjust. Coping with newborns and infants may feel overwhelming at first, so parenting classes can help you learn how to deal with your infant's needs as well as the rest of the family's needs. Having this kind of knowhow can help every member of the family feel calmer.

Create a healthy family routine: When there's a new baby in the home, it's important to create ground rules that everyone

knows and can follow. Your new baby will thrive when everyone knows what to expect and can adjust accordingly. When the entire family knows the rules, it makes life at home much easier for everyone involved. These rules may include being mindful of noise levels when the baby is sleeping or creating a schedule for new parents so you can get time to take care of yourself while still being present in your child's life.

Become a more confident parent: Knowledge is power, so parenting techniques, strategies, and hacks will help you feel more confident as a new parent. While classes for new parents start with the basics such as feeding, diapering, and bathing, most programs go deeper for those families with specific needs for their child. All babies are different; the reality is that your baby may need more attention when it comes to their feeding habits, sleeping schedules, or overall care. Parenting classes also give you tips on how to care for yourself and improve interactions with your baby—including information on breastfeeding, sleeping, and bonding.

Be happier as a family: Classes can teach more than just Mom or Dad—they can teach each family member about empathy, selfworth and awareness, appropriate family roles, and age-appropriate expectations of children's development. Parents and children learn how to improve the quality of their lives together!

Need Help Paying for Childcare?

Who Qualifies?

Families qualify for the Alternative Payment Program based on two criteria “eligibility” and “need”.

Eligibilit y

To be “ eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

Need”

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients)

Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits. For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

How May I See if I Qualif y?

Currently there are more families in need of assistance than there is funding to help. A waiting list of eligible families is kept to fill funding slots as they become available. To be placed on the waiting list, you may contact (559) 230 2030 or visit our website at ssifresno.org.

3 Ways Parents Can Put Their Own Holiday Joy Front And Center This Year

t’s that time of year: parents are gearing up to work overtime to inject doses of joy into their family's holiday experiences. With all that shopping, cooking, hosting, baking, planning, and wrapping, it’s easy to lose sight of whether you're getting any satisfaction out of the season yourself. But take it from me, a mom of five and co-host of @TheMomHour podcast, Parents, you deserve a magical holiday, too!

Parents set the tone for the household— and by extension, the holiday. How you feel about the way you spend this time will absolutely affect the way your family feels about it—even if you aren’t consciously aware of the emotional transfer.

I don’t know about you, but if I had to choose between offering my kids a cheerful mom or more gifts, better cookies, or nicer decor, I’d choose cheer every time. Both because it’s better for my family, but also because it’s better for me. I’m a human being too, and deserve a joyful holiday—however that looks for me. Let’s not lose sight of that! Here are some ideas to help your experience get its fair share of the attention this season: Find small ways to inject peace and joy into the magic-making you’re doing for others. Make that holiday to-do list in a festive coffee shop while the kids stay home with your partner. Wrap gifts locked in your room with a favorite podcast and your favorite snacks. Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper. Write down all the things you’ve done for yourself this week in one column, and the things you did for your loved ones in the other. Now compare the lists. It’s totally normal for the list of things you do for others to be longer, but this exercise can help you see if there are glaring discrepancies between the amount of energy you’re pouring into everyone else and what you’re leaving for yourself.

Give yourself permission to abandon thankless and exhausting traditions. I always find it interesting to check in with my kids about what they remember about past holiday seasons; it’s a good reminder that sometimes, the things I think everyone else is counting on may not matter that much to them after all. After you’ve freed up some time, add in something that gives you energy and delight.

Remember, this holiday-parent thing is a marathon, not a sprint. One day, the activities that seem impossible to pull off this year may just be doable again. In the meantime, make it manageable and find magic where you can, because your holiday joy matters too.

9 Tips to Foster 'Happy' not 'Havoc' this Holiday Season

The Holiday madness is here! As we all know, it comes fast and furious. Clinical Psychologist, Health Service Psychologist, Adjunct Professor, and Board Certified Music Therapist, Dr. Bethany Cook, shares nine tips to a happy (and less manic) Holiday Season.

Gratitude Attitude

At meals, or another appointed time, have everyone offer one thing they are grateful for; you can have categories like self, others, family, friends, or nature. Studies have shown we can develop a gratitude mindset through effort and focus. When we bring to consciousness the positive aspects of life, it improves our overall mental health. The cocktail of stress hormones are replaced by the ‘love’ ones which is a win-win.

Validation Vase

As a family, design a vase and put small papers beside it with a pencil. As things happen over the holidays—or throughout the year—ask family members to write down things they appreciate in others. Read them together at predetermined times. Hearing nice things about yourself and perhaps things you didn’t think anyone noticed, reinforces a sense of self within the family system.

Map the Holiday Months

Include not only dates for dinners, but mark off time for shopping, couples time, and alone time. The holidays get busy, and before you know it, you’re overwhelmed and stressed. You can also add a budget to this map. Carve out a couple hours to talk about budgets, gifts, where to buy them, who will get them, and who will watch the kids while you shop. Then, stick to the plan! Any diversions should be shared and pre-approved if possible.

No Pressure Post Pics

Yes, we all want our ‘Hallmark’ memories over the next few months to be captured on film. Problem is, when these moments are forced, or that's the main focus during the event, you are not actually present to appreciate the real happiness that can be created by closely connecting to your loved ones. Special moments are about slowing down and stopping long enough to actually observe them. Put the camera down and let your heart take a picture!

Limits Facilitate Leisure

You will want to set boundaries and limits with extended family and friends before throwing or attending events. Have an action plan ready to go in case someone doesn’t respect your limits or your family isn’t respecting someone else's. If people arrive with more than the number of gifts you’ve said is okay to give your kids, what is the plan? Do you put some away for later? If your child screams and runs around at a party, do you walk outside and help them recenter? Or do you say your goodbyes and head home for a nap?

Build in Breaks

If you, or someone in your immediate crew, needs downtime to refuel, don’t plan events back to back. Mark off hours each day for downtime. Learn what downtime is best for each person. Maybe one family member prefers to take naps while another would rather read at the park. Find what works best for each family member and make sure to give them each their own customized downtime.

The Helping High

It’s hard to help someone else and not feel better yourself. Sit down with your family and talk about ways to give back. This could be in the form of financial donations, volunteering your time or talents, buying gifts for a family, or writing letters to kids who are in the hospital. Model for your children the importance of community and connection. Talk with your family and see what they are passionate about this year.

Reflect on Stressors

Pause to reflect on what stresses you out the most about the holiday season; money, family events, decorating madness? Once you have identified what gets under your skin the most, you can do your best to be prepared. Do holiday meals with twenty different dishes not work for you? Ask your family to agree on a few dishes they'd love you to make. Do you find that you feel obligated to overspend on gifts for the kids? Talk with your partner about less expensive options that the kids will still love. These talks will prepare you mentally to pack your coping backpack and make sure you have all the necessary supplies to manage.

Keep Schedules Simple

Don’t over schedule yourself or your kids. Do as much as you can ahead of time, but also be okay with saying no. Make sure your family has free days to simply enjoy each other, the chilly weather, and the joyous season!
