“Eligibility”

To be “eligible”, a family’s income must meet eligibility requirements set by the State Department of Social Services, Child Care and Development Division.

A family “needs” childcare based on one of the following: parents are employed, in school, or participating in a training program, parents are incapacitated or are unable to adequately care for their child(ren), children with special needs (medical, psychological, or if the child(ren) needs care as protection from abuse or neglect.

CalWORKs Families (current and former recipients) Childcare is a critical part of your success as a former or current recipient of CalWORKs (or AFDC) benefits.

For former or current CalWORKs recipients, Supportive Services, Inc. can provide funding if you meet eligibility requirements.

Breaking Down Barriers to Youth Sports The Every Kid Sports Pass helps remove financial barriers so more children can experience the benefits of youth sports. Eligible families can receive up to $150 to help cover registration fees for qualifying recreational sports programs. The online application takes just 5–15 minutes to complete, making it a quick and easy way to access assistance.

To qualify, your child must be 4–18 years old, be currently enrolled in Medicaid, SNAP, or WIC, and participate in a recreational (not elite or travel) sports program. The sport must also have a season lasting at least four weeks.

Community leagues, parks and recreation programs, and school sports are all eligible.

You can also help more children get in the game by supporting Every Kid Sports.

HealthWatch An Update on your Family’s Health and Welfare

Physical Activity & Nutrition Are Key to Building Strong Bones

Did you know 40% of bone density is laid down in childhood?

Healthy habits like staying active and eating the right nutrients help children develop strong bones now and reduce their risk of osteoporosis later in life. Here are a few simple ways to support healthy bone development: Weight-Bearing & High-Impact Activity: Children ages 3–5 are recommended to get at least 180 minutes of varied intensity activity a day (ages 6–17 should get at least 60 minutes). Bone-building activities—like jumping, running, gymnastics, soccer, and similar activities—generate high ground reactive forces.

Calcium-Rich Foods: Calcium is the building block of strong bones, but it needs the help of vitamin D! Dairy products, leafy green vegetables, almonds, and other calcium-rich foods can help kids ages 9–18 reach the 1,000–1,300 mg of calcium per day recommendation. Younger children need about half that amount.

Adequate Vitamin D: Safe sun exposure, fortified foods, or a daily supplement can help provide vitamin D. Natural food sources are eggs, oily fish, and fortified foods. Children 1 year and older should

get 600 IU of vitamin D each day.

Additionally, adequate protein intake supports bone formation.

Limit sedentary time, like screen time, to less than 1 hour per day.

Pass on the Peroxide: A Surgeon's Guide to Cleaning Wounds at Home Every year, countless minor injuries occur in homes, garages, and backyards across the country. The immediate instinct for many is to reach for a familiar brown bottle of hydrogen peroxide or a swab of rubbing alcohol to "clean" the wound. As a leader of education at the American College of Surgeons, I want to share a resource developed by experienced surgeons that may lead you to pass on the peroxide.

For decades, these antiseptics were considered a cornerstone of wound care. Medical understanding, however, reveals they often do more harm than good when used inside an open cut or scrape.

While effective at killing bacteria, solutions like peroxide, alcohol, and iodine can't target "bad" cells. They also attack the delicate new cells your body sends to repair the damage. Harming this fragile tissue can delay healing, increase inflammation, and lead to more noticeable scarring. In short, you may be sabotaging your body's attempts to heal. So what should you do when a superficial cut or abrasion occurs?

Wash your hands. Scrub your hands for 20 seconds with soap then rinse with water. Use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

Then, gently clean the wound with mild soap and lots of clean, running water. This method effectively flushes out debris and bacteria without harming the wound.

After patting the area dry, you can apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (if there are signs of infection) or plain petroleum jelly.

Follow this process and keep the wound covered with a clean bandage for the first week to ensure it remains moist. A moist environment is proven to heal faster with less scarring than a dry, scabbed one. If it's not healing, call your healthcare provider.

Effective home care of a wound requires more than just proper cleaning. Knowing when a wound needs stitches, how to apply the right dressing, and how to spot early signs of infection are critical skills that can prevent minor injuries from becoming major problems. Some wounds should not be handled at home. Learn when you should call a doctor or go to your nearest emergency room or immediate care center.

If you've had a recent operation, you are likely to have a surgical incision. These also require careful attention to reduce the risk of infection, speed the healing process, and enhance your recovery.

The American College of Surgeons has a free Wound Management Home Skills resource that provides comprehensive information and videos to manage everything from simple scrapes to post-surgical incisions. They detail how to stop bleeding, pack a wound, care for stitches, and recognize when it's time to call your doctor.

True preparedness is more than having a first-aid kit in your closet; it's about having the correct knowledge to use it. By retiring outdated practices and embracing proven, gentle care, we can all ensure that your wounds heal quickly, safely, and properly.

here’s a moment every fall when parents realize that summer is slipping away.

Backpacks reappear by the front door. Lunchboxes come out of storage. Bedtimes slowly inch earlier. And whether children are starting preschool or heading to college, the return to school often brings a mix of excitement, nervousness, resistance, and anticipation.

Understandably, many parents focus on practical preparations. They shop for supplies, organize schedules, and replace outgrown clothing. But experts say emotional preparation matters just as much. In fact, small family traditions and predictable rituals can help children feel calmer, safer, and more emotionally secure during the back-to-school transition.

Children thrive on predictability," notes Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, author of Brain Under Attack. "Routines lower anxiety and calm the brain. Even small, steady rituals send the message: ‘You’re safe.'"

The Science Behind Family Rituals The good news for overwhelmed parents is that rituals and traditions do not need to be elaborate or expensive to matter. In many cases, the simplest efforts become the ones children remember most clearly years later.

Research consistently supports the importance of family routines. A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology found that predictable family rituals are associated with stronger emotional regulation and lower anxiety levels in children. That connection becomes especially important during back-to-school season, when children are processing new teachers, changing friendships, academic expectations, and major schedule shifts.

"Rituals give children a sense of what comes next and remind them that certain things are constant, even when life feels uncertain," says psychologist Tania Johnson. “These small acts reassure children that while life changes, connection remains."

Small Traditions Often Matter Most

For younger children, rituals can be surprisingly simple. Some families make pancakes before the first day of school every year. Others read the same bedtime story on the night before school starts or stop for ice cream after the first day.

Some parents tuck handwritten notes into lunchboxes, while others create special goodbye routines at drop-off.

What matters most is not the complexity or expense of the tradition, but the repetition behind it. Counselor Amazin Ijeoma notes, "Consistency matters more than extravagance. Sometimes, what people remember most is the repeated little moments that create the deepest memories.“

Helping Ease Back-to-School Anxiety

A sense of emotional safety is incredibly important in the fall because back-toschool anxiety is common, even among children who generally enjoy school.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, worries about academics, friendships, separation anxiety, and changing routines often intensify at the beginning of a new school year. Parents may notice increased clinginess, irritability, stomach issues, or trouble sleeping during the transition.

Experts say predictable moments of connection throughout the day can help ease some of that anxiety. A special hug before school, a quick after-school snack together, or a few uninterrupted minutes of conversation before bedtime can become stabilizing rituals children rely on emotionally.

"The goal is to create touchpoints of connection and predictability amidst the chaos. Even one small ritual, done consistently and with warmth, can become something your child counts on," notes Johnson.

Why Older Kids Need Traditions Too

Parents are often surprised to discover that older children and teenagers benefit from traditions and rituals just as much as younger children. While teenagers may appear less outwardly enthusiastic, family rituals still provide continuity and belonging during years filled with social pressure, academic stress, and rapid emotional development.

For older kids, traditions may naturally evolve. Instead of lunchbox notes or themed breakfasts, families might establish annual back-to-school outings, movie nights before the first day of school, or special dinners out to talk about goals and hopes for the coming year.

In a study published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies, researchers noted, “Adolescence is a sensitive period for the development of depressive-anxious symptomatology. The practice of family rituals and perceived social connectedness have been indicated as protective factors." Teens may not actively seek out rituals, but they provide stability during a potentially turbulent emotional stage.

Allowing traditions to change over time is important. The goal is not to create picture-perfect moments or force children into sentimental experiences they have outgrown. Instead, successful family rituals simply create repeated opportunities for ageappropriate connection.

Slowing Down During the School-Year Rush

Experts encourage families to avoid overscheduling during the first few weeks of school. Modern back-to-school season can quickly become overwhelming as homework, sports, extracurriculars, and packed calendars return all at once. Children often need more downtime than parents realize as they adjust to the demands of a new school year.

That may mean protecting family dinners, limiting activities temporarily, or creating calming after-school routines that help children reset after long days filled with stimulation and social interaction.

The Traditions Children Remember Forever

Many parents feel pressure to create magical childhood memories during milestones like the first day of school. Social media certainly reinforces the idea that every tradition should be elaborate, creative, and photo-worthy. But child development experts say the traditions children treasure most are rarely extravagant productions.

Instead, children tend to remember the smaller moments repeated consistently over time. The parent who always braided their hair before school. The silly breakfast tradition. The annual photo in the same spot each year. The handwritten note inside a backpack. Or the familiar hug before getting on the bus.

Those simple rituals quietly communicate something deeply reassuring to children: "You belong here. You are loved. We will face new things together."

During times of uncertainty and change, that sense of security may be one of the greatest gifts parents can offer.
