SYNOPSIS SYNOPSIS

11th century Scotland: Macbeth, a general in King Duncan’s army, and his fellow soldier, Banquo, are returning from a successful battle. On a barren heath, three witches appear and greet Macbeth as “Thane of Glamis,” “Thane of Cawdor” and “King hereafter.” They also prophesy that the future heirs of the throne will be descended not from Macbeth, but from Banquo. The witches disappear, and a messenger from the King arrives announcing that Macbeth has been named Thane of Cawdor, thus fulfilling the first part of the prophecy. Later, King Duncan declares that he is nominating his son, Malcolm, as heir, and announces that he will spend the night at the Macbeths’ castle.

Alone, Lady Macbeth reads her husband’s letter describing the witches’ revelations. Knowing that the king and his retinue will stay with them that very evening, she fears that Macbeth lacks the courage to commit murder and seize the crown. Macbeth eventually stabs the sleeping Duncan, and two guards are framed for the crime.

The next morning, Macduff, a nobleman, discovers the body of the King. The King’s sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, flee to England and Ireland, respectively. Macbeth is appointed King, but with the witches’ prophecy in mind, he arranges for the murders of Banquo and his son, Fleance. Although Banquo is killed, the hired assassins do not succeed in killing Fleance.

At his first banquet as king, Macbeth sees Banquo’s ghost, disrupting the evening, despite Lady Macbeth’s efforts to control the situation.

He returns to the witches, who share new visions with him: to beware Macduff, that he can never be killed by “one of woman born,” and to never fear until he sees Birnham Wood begin to move towards his castle at Dunsinane. These twisted predictions lead Macbeth to think that he is safe from harm, although the witches still show that Banquo’s descendants will ascend the throne.

When Macbeth learns that Macduff has fled the country to join with Malcolm, he orders Macduff’s wife and children to be put to death. Haunted by all that has transpired, Lady Macbeth begins sleepwalking. Malcolm and Macduff advance an army to challenge Macbeth, cutting down the branches of Birnham Wood to disguise their number. Macbeth is readying what army he has left when news reaches him that Lady Macbeth has died. Macbeth goes into battle.

Face to face, Macduff reveals that he was “from his mother’s womb, untimely ripped,” and defeats Macbeth. Malcolm, the rightful heir to Duncan’s throne, becomes King of Scotland.

TERENCE “TERRY� MILLIGAN Professor Milligan is known for his profound dedication to students during his tenure at CCM. He served as conductor of the CCM Wind Ensemble, director of the graduate cognate program in wind conducting, director of the University of Cincinnati Bearcat Band and Commencement ceremony band. He was integrally involved with the music education programs and served as a faculty advisor. His students recognized him with several awards for distinguished teaching.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Dear CCM Audiences: Thank you for coming to this production of MACBETH. Truly. Your support of these students and their art form is more meaningful than you may know.

I felt I should take a little bit of program space here to give you just a smidge of information about what you’re going to see, without talking it to death and ruining the whole thing for you. So I’ll be brief.

A couple of years ago, my friend Daria announced that, from then on, she wanted to be known as Will. So she began transitioning into a male gender identity.

To say that this transition began at that moment is of course too facile: that transition probably began long before any of us knew about it, maybe before Daria knew about it.

So I observed, over Facebook, Will’s tiny victories and monumental setbacks in this journey. What struck me then was how supportive his digital community of friends was (although anyone who may have disapproved of Will’s decisions probably wasn’t going to weigh in about it on Facebook). You want to be a man? Okay, poof, you’re a man. You want to change your name? Okay, poof, you’re Will. Our conceptions of Daria and who she was were not so fixed that we could not absorb this metamorphosis, and the generosity and ease with which Will’s community reinterpreted him filled me with joy.

Will underwent some sexual reassignment surgery though I’m not sure he’s entirely completed his process. This kind of reshaping oneself is, I think, expensive. In any case, his voyage continues.

I began thinking more and more about gender identity, how it relates to sex, sexuality, the roles we play in our community, and how we are beholden to one another.

In the winter of last year, when the Drama Department was selecting this season, I told Richard, our chair, that I wanted to direct MACBETH. His response: great, but we don’t have enough men. We have a lot of talented women.

This is a production of MACBETH in which many of the male characters are transgendered. That is to say: Angus, Menteth, Cathness, et al., are all men: they are biologically female, but they identify as men, and their community recognizes them as men.

I believe that the story is still precise, that the emotional arcs are clear and true, and that the whole is greater than the sum of its many parts. The parts are just a little different than you might be used to.

THE VILLAGE NEWS ALUMNI APPLAUSE Ty Olwin, 2013 CCM drama graduate, has already made his mark on the Chicago scene. He appeared as Jack in the Steppenwolf production of Lord of the Flies, as well as The Raven Theatre production of Tennessee Williams’ Vieux Carre. In addition, Ty appeared in a guest starring role on NBC’s on Crisis. He is currently performing in Season on the Line at The House Theatre of Chicago.

Amanda Kai Newman, an April 2014 MFA graduate of CCM’s Costume Design & Technology program, recently worked as the costume design assistant to Martha Bromelmeier on the OffBroadway Musical, Red Eye of Love and is currently working at Eric Winterling’s costume studio in New York City and as a free-lance fabric painter for The Puppet Kitchen, also in New York. While at CCM, Amanda designed costumes for Metamorphoses, The Crucible and more. She also assisted CCM’s Resident Costume Designer, Dean Mogle, on The Magic Flute and Into the Woods.

Evan Charest, 2010 CCM drama graduate, is a Los Angeles-based actor who recently co-starred on the new show Franklin & Bash on TNT. He will also appear in the upcoming feature film The Tiger Hunter starring Danny Pudi. His other Los Angeles credits include J. Edgar with Leonardo DiCaprio, The Inevitable Death of Gus Banister, The Test and the FOX sitcom New Girl.

Wesley Fay Yount, December 2013 graduate from Centerville, Ohio, recently completed an internship with the innovative Canadian entertainment company Cirque Du Soleil, working on their Zarkana production in Las Vegas. Post-graduation she continues to work in Las Vegas as the assistant stage manager of another Cirque du Soliel production, The Beatles’ LOVE and as part time assistant stage manager for the Blue Man Group.

GENERAL INFORMATION CCM BOX OFFICE: Located in the CCM Atrium, the Box Office is open Monday through Friday, 12-5:30 p.m.; Saturday, 12-4 p.m.; and one hour prior to curtain for Mainstage performances. Master Card, VISA and Discover cards are accepted. CCM Box Office, P.O. Box 210003, Cincinnati, Ohio 45221-0003; 513-556-4183.

PARKING: Convenient parking is available in the CCM Garage, at the base of Corry Boulevard off of Jefferson Avenue. Additional parking is available in garages throughout the UC campus. Any questions concerning on-campus parking should be directed to UC Parking Services at 513-556-2283.

TAX CREDIT: If you find that you cannot attend your performance, your tickets may be donated for tax credit as a charitable contribution. Simply notify the Box Office prior to the performance to release your seats, and give your name and address. A tax donation receipt will be mailed to you.

EMERGENCY CALLS: If you are likely to receive an emergency call during a performance, please leave your name and seat location with the House Manager. If you have a beeper, we also request that you leave it with the House Manager along with your seat number so as not to disturb the audience and actors. In case of emergencies, this will help us locate you as quickly as possible.

LOST AND FOUND: 513-556-9413 HOUSE POLICIES: The House Manager has been instructed to minimize the disturbance to patrons already seated when accommodating latecomers. The director and producer of each production select times which are least likely to interrupt the performance, and latecomers will be seated only during these times.

Latecomers who miss these opportunities will not be admitted until intermission. Children under the age of six are not to be admitted.

CAMERAS, PHONES AND RECORDING DEVICES: The possession of cameras, with or without flashes, recording devices, cellular phones and other electronic devices inside the theater is strictly prohibited.

Please leave them with the House Manager.

SMOKING AND REFRESHMENTS: Smoking and refreshments are not permitted in the theater. Effective January 1, 2006, smoking is prohibited inside all buildings, athletics facilities and vehicles owned,

operated or leased by the University of Cincinnati. Smoking is also prohibited within 25 feet of all university building entrances, exits, air intakes and operable windows. Smoking shall not be permitted on any bridge, overpass or enclosed walkway.

HEARING ENHANCEMENT: Telex listening devices are available for checkout during performances in both Patricia Corbett Theater and Corbett Auditorium. Please inquire at the Box Office.

WHEELCHAIR SEATING: Wheelchair seating is available in both theaters. Seating is limited, so reservations should be made with the Box Office when ordering tickets. These seats are subject to availability.

GROUP SALES: The Box Office can accommodate groups for major productions and concerts. Preview and benefit performances are also available for some productions. For more information, call the CCM Box Office at 513-556-4183.
