Summer Has Arrived!

And this summer is going to the dogs. Since I started at the Truckee Chamber three years ago, I have wanted to do a summer magazine focused on all the great reasons to be a dog in Truckee. From swimming to hiking to working, our four-legged friends sure have it made being Truckee dogs. In this issue, you will find some great ideas for how to make the most of this summer and learn about some great work our dog friends are doing. I also want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who came out for our first community dog photo at Boca! We are thinking this needs to become an annual tradition.

FIRECRACKER MILE FUN RUN After breakfast, head down Donner Pass Road for the Firecracker Mile Fun Run benefiting the Auburn Ski Club.

This one-mile, gravity-fed race starts at 9:40 a.m. at US Bank and finishes downtown near the Truckee Welcome Center stage.

The event is family-friendly, strollerfriendly, and dog-friendly, making it a fun way for everyone to join the celebration. Participants are encouraged to wear patriotic gear and festive costumes as thousands of parade spectators line the streets cheering runners on.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST Start your morning at the Truckee Fire Protection District’s annual 4th of July Pancake Breakfast. Held at Station 92 (11473 Donner Pass Road next to Wild Cherries) from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m., this longtime community tradition is free to attend, though donations are appreciated. Grab a stack of pancakes, load them up with butter and maple syrup, and fuel up before the day’s festivities begin.

TRUCKEE 4TH OF JULY PARADE Truckee’s beloved 4th of July Parade begins a few minutes before 10:00 a.m. at the west end of Donner Pass Road at the Administrative Office parking lot of Tahoe Truckee Unified School District and travels 1.5 miles into historic Downtown Truckee.

The 2026 parade is expected to be one of the biggest yet as the community celebrates the nation’s 250th anniversary. Spectators can look forward to colorful floats, classic cars, horses, local nonprofits, live performances, fire trucks, and plenty of hometown spirit.

If you want a prime viewing spot, plan ahead. Locals begin setting out chairs early in the morning, and downtown fills up quickly. Truckee Tahoe Radio

101.5 FM traditionally broadcasts parade commentary near Mountain Hardware and Sports for those watching near the start of the route.

The parade remains one of Truckee’s signature community events, bringing together residents and visitors alike for a lively and memorable morning.

GETTING TO THE TRUCKEE 4TH OF JULY PARADE Free shuttle service will run from several Truckee neighborhoods into downtown before, during, and after the parade, including service from areas such as Prosser, Glenshire, Sierra Meadows, Donner Lake, Tahoe Donner, and Northstar.

COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS VIP PARADE SEATING The Truckee Chamber’s Community Connection VIP Seating returns for another year, offering reserved seating directly in front of the train station near the judges’ stand.

Guests enjoy shaded seating, coffee, and light refreshments while taking in one of the best views of the parade. It’s also a great option for anyone who prefers not to wake up before sunrise to claim curbside seats.

After the parade, continue the celebration at West End Beach on Donner Lake. The annual beach party includes live music, games, food, and fireworks at dusk.

West End Beach admission is typically available in advance through the Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District.

Tickets often sell out before the holiday, so purchasing early is highly recommended.

Donner Lake becomes extremely busy on the 4th of July, with public piers and shoreline viewing areas filling early in the day. Many people choose to watch the fireworks from boats or kayaks, while others head to higher vantage points along Old Highway 40 for panoramic views overlooking the lake. The bike lanes are heavily used, not only by bikers, but by pedestrians as well. Be sure to carry a light and wear reflective clothing for getting home after the fireworks.

GETTING AROUND ON THE 4TH OF JULY: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO The 4th of July is one of the busiest days of the year in Truckee, and traffic congestion can be significant throughout town and around Donner Lake. To help reduce traffic and parking challenges, several free and environmentally friendly transportation options are available throughout the day, including buses, shuttles, and a complimentary bike valet next to Beacon gas station for the parade.

Getting to Donner Lake A free shuttle to West End Beach will return in 2026, offering park-and-ride service from Truckee High School to Donner Lake during the evening festivities. Using the shuttle is one of the easiest ways to avoid heavy traffic and limited parking near the lake.

Four-Legged Helpers of the Sierra

AVALANCHE RESCUE DOGS Perhaps the most dramatic working dogs in the TruckeeTahoe region are avalanche rescue dogs. During winter, these highly trained animals work alongside ski patrol teams and search-and-rescue crews throughout the Sierra.

I n Truckee, dogs are more than companions.

They are rescuers, protectors, therapists, and working partners woven into everyday life in the Sierra Nevada. In a mountain town shaped by snowstorms, forests, ranching, and outdoor recreation, dogs often take on jobs that are both practical and deeply human.

Some race across avalanche debris searching for buried skiers. Others quietly sit beside hospital patients during difficult moments. Some spend long summer days guarding sheep in high mountain meadows. And one local bulldog named Mugz has become a beloved public ambassador for the Truckee Police Department.

Avalanche dogs are trained to locate people buried beneath deep snow. In an avalanche, every minute matters. Survival rates drop quickly after the first fifteen minutes, and a dog’s extraordinary sense of smell can help rescuers find victims faster than human searchers alone.

Truckee-Tahoe avalanche dogs often train under standards established by the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association, widely considered one of the highest levels of avalanche dog certification. Once certified, dogs can assist not only at ski resorts but also in backcountry rescues across the region.

At resorts near Truckee, including Northstar California Resort, Tahoe Donner Ski Resort, and Palisades Tahoe, avalanche dogs train constantly throughout the winter season. (See Local Dog to Know, Ripp, on p.25 ) Skiers may occasionally see handlers and dogs riding chairlifts together early in the morning before the slopes open. Puppies begin with play-

based exercises, learning to associate buried human scent with rewards and excitement. Over time, training becomes more complex, involving deep snow burials, helicopter noise, snowmobiles, and chaotic rescue simulations.

The dogs themselves are usually energetic breeds with strong drive and stamina. Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and mixed breeds are common choices. Handlers often say the best avalanche dogs are those that treat the work like an exciting game.

The relationship between dog and handler is central to success. Handlers learn to read tiny behavioral changes: a sudden tail movement, intense focus, or a shift in digging behavior can signal the scent of a buried person.

In recent years, avalanche incidents near Truckee and the greater Tahoe region have highlighted how important these teams remain. Even with modern avalanche beacons and rescue technology, dogs continue to be one of the fastest and most effective search tools available in mountain emergencies.

Avalanche dogs also serve another purpose. They help educate the public about mountain safety. Community demonstrations at ski resorts and local events teach visitors about avalanche awareness, rescue procedures, and the preparation required before heading into the backcountry.

For many locals, seeing an avalanche dog trotting through the snow wearing a patrol vest has become part of winter life in Truckee.

MUGZ: TRUCKEE'S POLICE AMBASSADOR Not all working dogs in Truckee chase down suspects or search disaster sites. Some work through charm.

One of the town’s most recognizable canine personalities is Captain Mugshot, better known as Mugz, the English Bulldog adopted by the Truckee Police Department in 2022. See Mugz's feature on p. 11.

Mugz began life far from the spotlight. Originally named Billy Bob, he was found as a stray in Kern County before eventually being transferred to the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe.

Staff quickly recognized that he had an unusually calm and engaging personality. The Truckee Police Department saw something special too and decided to adopt him as a community outreach canine. (mynews4.com) Unlike traditional police K-9s trained for patrol or narcotics work, Mugz serves as a goodwill ambassador. His job centers on outreach, education, and helping build positive relationships between officers and the public.

He attends community events, visits schools, appears in department social media posts, and helps make officers feel

more approachable, especially for children. In a time when many police departments across the country are working to strengthen community trust, dogs like Mugz provide a softer and more personal connection. The department often describes him as both a community ambassador and a reminder of the bond between public servants and the people they serve.

And honestly, it is difficult not to smile at an English Bulldog with the title “Captain Mugshot.”

PET ASSISTED THERAPY DOGS The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe’s Pet Assisted Therapy (PAT) program was established in 1997. Through this program, certified HSTT volunteers and their companion animals visit hospitals, schools, libraries, and assist in supporting the community when needed.

The science behind therapy dogs is surprisingly strong.

Studies have shown that interacting with calm, trained dogs can reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure, ease anxiety, and improve mood. In hospitals, where fear and uncertainty are common, the presence of a friendly dog can change the emotional atmosphere of a room almost instantly.

At Tahoe Forest Hospital, therapy dogs may visit patients recovering from surgery, children facing medical procedures, or elderly patients dealing with isolation. Always in their TFH vests, there is currently a team of six AKC Good Dog certified canines that regularly brighten people’s hospital visits: Murphy, Marlee, Hank, Starla, Gracie, and Huckleberry. Healthcare workers often describe the dogs as unofficial members of the care team. During difficult days, even a short visit from one of these happy dogs can give patients and staff a moment of relief.

Golden Retrievers, Labradors, Poodles, and mixed breeds are common therapy dogs because of their gentle temperaments, but personality matters far more than breed. The best comfort dogs are steady, affectionate, patient, and highly social.

Livestock guardian dogs serve a different role. Breeds like Great Pyrenees, Anatolian Shepherds, and Akbash dogs live with the flock full-time and protect animals from predators such as coyotes, mountain lions, and bears.

In mountain communities like Truckee, where winters can feel long and isolating, the emotional support provided by comfort dogs can be especially meaningful.

Long before Truckee became known for skiing and recreation, the surrounding Sierra landscape supported ranching and seasonal grazing.

Today, sheep and cattle grazing still occur throughout parts of the Tahoe National Forest in Truckee, usually starting in July. Historically, the Tahoe National Forest was heavily overgrazed. Before the U.S. Forest Service established and implemented its modern rangeland management program in 1906-07, more than 100,000 sheep were recorded grazing on the forest, contributing to significant impacts on vegetation, soils, and watershed health. Today, livestock grazing is managed much more carefully, with approximately 6,000 sheep permitted to graze on the forest under regulated allotments.

Where there are sheep, there are usually working dogs.

These dogs typically fall into two categories: herding dogs and livestock guardian dogs.

Herding dogs, such as Border Collies or Australian Shepherds, actively move sheep from place to place. They respond to whistles and commands, helping shepherds guide large flocks through rugged terrain.

MORE THAN PETS Truckee’s working dogs reflect the character of the region itself. They are adaptable, resilient, outdoorsy, and community-centered. Some work in snowstorms. Some work in hospitals. Some protect livestock in alpine meadows.

Others simply make people smile during difficult days.

What connects all of them is partnership. Working dogs succeed because humans trust them, train with them, and depend on them. In return, dogs offer loyalty, intelligence, instinct, and an eagerness to work beside people.

And then there are dogs who go to work every day without a job description. Truckee is known for being very dog-friendly, and many offices and shops are no exception.

Dogs can make the workplace a happier and more productive environment. Dogs can also promote movement throughout the day, whether it's a quick walk or a break for play. Studies have shown that interacting with dogs may help reduce stress, improve morale, and encourage positive social interactions among employees.

THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF TRUCKEE-TAHOE— WHERE BEST FRIENDS ARE FOUND

Raise your hand if you’ve got a best friend from the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT). There’s a lot of you out there, choosing to adopt rather than shop, saving dogs from whatever unfortunate circumstances landed them into the loving arms of the staff at HSTT. Many conversations in Truckee among strangers who are dog parents eventually circle around to the question, “Where did you get your dog?” Of which, more often than not, the reply is, “The Humane Society.”

What started as a simple love for dogs and a deep desire to help animals in need has grown into a true community pillar. Today, the local Humane Society not only connects loving companions with families seeking them, but also creates meaningful opportunities for the community to support and be part of each animal’s journey from shelter to forever home.

CREATING SECOND CHANCES The story of HSTT begins in 1994, when a small group of passionate volunteers came together with one goal: to give animals in the community a better life. From those humble beginnings, the organization grew steadily, powered by compassion, hard work, and a shared belief that every pet deserves a loving home.

What was once a small grassroots effort with just one employee and many dedicated volunteers has become a nationally recognized nonprofit, leading the way in adoption, spay/neuter programs, and humane education throughout the TruckeeTahoe region.

Along the way, moments of generosity helped shape HSTT’s future in extraordinary ways. One of the most impactful came from Ruth Ivy Frishman, a former Truckee attorney and early legacy donor. When she passed away

“With no formal instructions, but a heartfelt hope expressed to those close to her, Ruth envisioned a brighter future for the animals in our community. Her extraordinary generosity became the catalyst for building our new animal shelter,” shared Stephanie Nistler, HSTT CEO (and one of the HSTT founders). “Though she never sought recognition, her gift has had a profound and lasting impact, transforming HSTT and creating second chances for countless animals. Her legacy continues to inspire us each and every day.”

HSTT’s current shelter, a joint project with the Town of Truckee, was fully realized in 2013. The facility serves as a safe haven for more than 1,000 animals each year, giving countless pets a second chance at life.

Today, HSTT continues to carry forward that original mission, bringing people and animals together, and proving that compassion, community, and generosity can truly change the world, one life at a time.

Hey there, my name is Olaf, and I started my Truckee journey at the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (read about them on page 26). Now I have a warm home with humans who love me, but best of all, they love to take me outside! I may be biased, but I think Truckee is the best place on earth to be a dog! The air smells like critters and pine needles, and everywhere I turn, there’s a new place to run, splash, dig, or just trot alongside my humans like I own the place.

BOCA RESERVOIR

If you have a dog, I know they love to get out and after it too. Here’s my personal guide to the best spots to take them to stretch their legs, sniff absolutely everything, and, when it’s allowed, go full-speed, earsback, tongue-out wild.

The shoreline stretches for ages, and depending on where we post up, I can charge through the shallows, chase sticks, or patrol the beach like it’s my job. It’s one of those places where I could live, if my human ever let me. (Just kidding, I love my warm and cozy couch at home).

Olaf This is where I go when my human doesn’t want to do a big walk but wants to make sure I have plenty of room to zoom.

It’s here that I can run into the water and swim, rip around the beach, and wander around the trees and grass.

MARTIS VALLEY LOOP

SAWTOOTH RECREATION AREA

This walk is the best for sniffing out all the different life forms we share the trails and open spaces with! The ground has ALL the good stories of wildlife that passes through, like Canada geese, American white pelicans, bald eagles, and osprey. Sniff out creeks for western wood pewees, nuthatches, and chickadees. And I’m pretty sure I caught a whiff of a coyote last time I was there! The trail is chill, and the loop is a nice distance for keeping a steady trot while contemplating dog life. Make sure you stay on the path though, so you don’t disturb any hidden wildlife!

Ah, yes, one of my favorite Truckee spots! The trails off the 06 fire road, managed by Truckee Trails Foundation, are where I get to be my bestest self. This is where I channel my inner Buck and feel the Call of the Wild in my bones. I love the winding singletrack, trees whipping by, and the soft dirt under my paws. There are miles and miles of connecting trails, all adjacent to the Sierra Meadows neighborhood. If your human hikes or bikes, you’re both going to love this spot. I’ll be out front, leading the way, obviously.

DONNER MEMORIAL STATE PARK For those of you who don’t like the mud (and sheesh, who doesn’t except our humans?), Donner Lake is a fun place to walk around and possibly dip in the crystal clear water. There are lots of trails to explore, sticks literally EVERYWHERE, and plenty of new scents coming in from every direction. It’s a little more of a “stay close” area and leashes are required, but that just means I get to practice my very best good boy behavior before earning a yummy treat when I get home.

LEGACY TRAIL This is my social route, where I say hi to all my local 4-legged friends and welcome Truckee’s visitors. You’ll see plenty of other dogs, kids, bikers, walkers, runners, and more on this long, winding, paved path, so you have to be fine with all types of activity and probably some pets from strangers.

It’s great for a casual trot and easy walk, especially when you’re in the mood to exchange some very important sniffs in passing.

COLDSTREAM Coldstream has a tucked-away feel because it’s located in a canyon; I love to imagine I’m on the hunt during a long trek. I’ve sniffed the scents of all the Sierra wildlife here, so you need to be on your toes! Dip in the stream, hike up to the pond, or wander up a trail for views all to yourself. It’s quiet, serene, but full of adventure.

PROSSER RESERVOIR If you’re into large birds and mud between your toes, this is the place to be. With a big open area, tons of off-shoot trails to explore, and water access, you can zigzag across the landscape, dip into the water when you need to cool off, and circle back like a boomerang. Unfortunately, this summer Prosser is closed for forestry work.

EMIGRANT TRAIL My favorite place to jump on the Emigrant Trail is at the Donner Picnic Area. The trail is fun and super long.

It will eventually meet up with Prosser Reservoir and Creek for a welldeserved swim. A couple of times, I came face-to-face with a horse! So, if you’re not into them, either skip this one or just be extra cautious. My humans and I always step way off to the side to let them pass.

WADDLE RANCH This is like the secret stash, but for dogs. You’ll find trails, open spaces, water, and lots of bushes. It’s also perfect for dogs who need a little space, as it’s never crowded! This is where I go when I want to explore Truckee’s quieter side.

Honestly, I don’t really care where we go. If there’s dirt under my paws, stuff to stick my nose in, and a little space to run, I’m a happy guy. But these local spots are the ones where I feel like my best, most unhinged, joy-filled self.

So grab the leash, pack the treats, and let’s go! See you out there.

One of the best ways to explore Truckee together is on the trail system.

Truckee boasts more than 25 miles of scenic paved trails that are perfect for walking, running, biking, or simply enjoying the outdoors with your pup by your side. Our Public Works Department maintains these paved trails year-round, including plowing them throughout the winter season. The trail network connects neighborhoods, parks, and open spaces, making it easy to swap a car ride for a dog walk.

Truckee is also incredibly dogfriendly.

At the Town of Truckee offices, it is not unusual to see a dog snoozing under a desk during a meeting or greeting visitors in the

morale to the day. Our Police Department is also lucky enough to have Captain Mugz, our adopted community outreach canine. Town Manager Jen Callaway even keeps dog treats in her office for visiting pups.

The result is a workplace that feels welcoming, connected, and undeniably Truckee.

The trails are thoughtfully designed for both humans and dogs, with poop bag stations and trash receptacles conveniently located along the routes to help keep the community clean and enjoyable for everyone. But every good adventure requires one important thing: hydration.

If you have noticed water refill stations around town, at events, parks, or trailheads, you have already seen this community initiative in action. Truckee Mountain Filtered is a collaborative effort between Truckee Donner Public Utility District and the Town’s Keep Truckee Green that encourages residents and visitors to refill reusable water bottles and reduce single-use plastic waste. And yes, your dog benefits too.

Whether you carry a collapsible dog bowl on hikes or simply need a quick water stop while strolling downtown, Truckee’s refill stations make it easy to keep everyone hydrated. You can even access an interactive map at truckeemountainfiltered.org to find refill stations throughout Truckee and across the greater Lake Tahoe region.

The best part? Truckee’s tap water is something genuinely special. Our drinking water comes from the Martis Valley Groundwater Basin, a deep Continued on page 38

underground aquifer naturally filtered through layers of bedrock, granite, clay, and silt. By the time it reaches your glass, or your dog’s travel bowl, it has spent hundreds of years underground, protected from surface contaminants and naturally purified by the surrounding geology.

Truckee Mountain Filtered is part of a broader community effort to reduce waste and encourage environmentally sustainable choices. Truckee’s ban on the sale of noncarbonated, unflavored water in single-use plastic bottles and paper cartons smaller than one gallon went into effect on

Earth Day 2025, reflecting our community’s commitment to protecting the outdoors and reducing waste.
