The purpose of WCHDSA is to initiate, sponsor, promote, and carry out plans, policies, activities, and development of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office specifically, and law enforcement generally.

This benefits the public as it lessens the burdens of government. In addition, they assist in the erection and maintenance of buildings for law enforcement education and training, aid with tuition and training

Volunteers on the ArrowCreek Board and on the ten committees that make recommendations to the Board are the life blood of ArrowCreek. They provide their time to put the community first and make it a premier community to live within. Together, they form the governing system of our not-so-small community. With 26 miles of roads, 21 miles of pathways, 2,900 acres making up the community, 957 homes of residents, and an annual budget of 3 million, governance of ArrowCreek is indeed a large undertaking that needs the talents of those who volunteer to help. They picked ArrowCreek because of the closeness of skiing and because of the golf courses. They have four adult children who live all over the country—California, Georgia, Arizona, and Texas. They enjoy their nine grandchildren, plus hiking, and travel. Their black and white Springer Spaniel

Many of us love dogs. They give us unconditional love and ask little in return, and as such, dogs are a ubiquitous presence in society. One of the lifestyle choices we have in ArrowCreek is going for a walk with our pet. This is both healthy for us and our dog. Along the various sidewalks, walking

This may be a conditioned response perhaps from a negative dog incident or just lack of exposure to them. A few people might even have cynophobia, which is the irrational fear of dogs. In any case, these individuals deserve that they will not be threatened or harassed by dogs that they come across in ArrowCreek.

For all of these reasons, ArrowCreek Rules and Regulations require that all pets be leashed while off of an owner's lot.

Responsible pet owners will be cognizant of others and avoid allowing their pet to approach individuals that they can see are uncomfortable. Other walkers you encounter may exhibit that "I want to pet and love your dog" signal and you can allow for a closer approach. When you are out with your dogs, please be respectful of other people’s feelings and leash and maintain a healthy distance from passersby.

While we are on the subject of pets-- in ArrowCreek, we “come for the views." One view, however, that we do not want to see is pet waste around the vista. We want to hear scat from Ella Fitzgerald, not view it on our walking paths and parks! Pet waste is not only unsightly, but also disease causing and an environmental pollutant. Please be a responsible pet owner and pick up after your pet. ArrowCreek has 13 pet stations including unlimited waste bags each with a disposal can. Our terrific maintenance staff maintains these with weekly disposal and replenishment of waste bags. Please utilize these and carry an extra bag or two with you on your walk so you do not get in a position of being without one when needed and you are three blocks from a pet station. Pet ownership is extremely rewarding, but it does come with responsibilities, responsibilities to adequately care for our pets, but also the need to be a considerate neighbor. In November 2019, Eddy House management was restructured and, with the generous support of the State of Nevada, private foundations, individual donors (many ArrowCreek residents) and contractors, the organization purchased and moved into a 16,335 square foot commercial building located near Renown Medical Center. The new facility allowed services to expand to 24 hours with overnight opportunities to get youth off the streets. The new facility also provides a drop-in shelter, transitional housing,

Bonnie's husband died unexpectedly earlier this year. Sue and Bonnie joined forces with other Chefs to make sure that the meals continued flawlessly. An extraordinary school year is coming to a close in the Washoe County School District (WCSD), but educators know their work is far from done. There will be plenty of opportunities for students to engage in academic recovery in the closing weeks of school and during the summer months as our community continues to deal with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During this school year, every staff member, teacher, and student has been required to change the ways in which they work, teach, and learn, but we are proud of the ways everyone has persevered.

School counselors and psychologists are working closely with students and staff members to provide support and tools for coping with the aftermath of this incredibly challenging school year.

Like many other school districts across the country, WCSD is dealing with chronic absenteeism, course failures, and a decline in ontrack (graduation) status for our seniors. School administrators know students and their families have had a tough year, facing, and overcoming unprecedented challenges that include economic hardship, illness, hunger, homelessness, isolation, and loss. WCSD is providing a variety of supports for students and families to ensure academic, social, and emotional recovery in these crucial months after the impacts of the pandemic begin to ease.

The district is relying on data to make decisions about how educators will intervene with academic supports for students. This will include counseling, graduation tracking, intersession classes, and credit recovery programs during the summer months for seniors. Some may need more time to finish their coursework and may choose to graduate in August. Others may need another year of support in school in order to earn their diploma. Counselors are working individually with seniors to ensure they are receiving the help they need to make decisions about their educational goals.

Teenagers feel the pressure to keep up with their peers both academically and socially. Falling behind can undermine their perception of themselves as good students and as community members. The 15-21 age group is when group interactions are learned. The pandemic has stifled the opportunity to learn to deal with other people: canceled sports, no club meetings, no study groups, no spring break parties. To what extent can we help them learn proper, structured interactions to carry them through adulthood?

Provide support, both at home and in school, that students need to succeed. Especially in a pandemic when powerlessness and helplessness are common, teens need to feel they have control over their lives and can make a difference. Empower young people by finding opportunities for civic engagement, community service or volunteering their time. Let them know the work they are doing is valuable and worthwhile. Parents are more successful in supporting their teenagers by helping to establish work/study habits, managing time, and motivating them. Recognize that schools often allow kids to connect and build relationships with other adults like coaches or counselors. Find ways to connect teens with other adults who can provide support. They could help a neighbor with gardening

while conversing with them. They could participate in ArrowCreek club activities such as feeding the homeless with the Chefs Club or hiking with the Hiking Club. They could participate in ArrowCreek committee activities such as the Social Committee to help at children’s activities or explore any of the other committees that might have mentors to broaden their interest.

While at home, parents can encourage youth to create a plan for getting their schoolwork done. This will allow teens to take ownership and responsibility for their schoolwork while practicing time management. Be sensitive to the fact that teenagers’ biological clocks lead them to stay up late and sleep late. Socializing is an important need at this time in a young person’s life and helps them develop their own identity. Let them connect safely with friends. How might that be arranged? One teen had the following response: “We need to be around people in normal settings doing things we enjoy doing, which in many cases, is not civil work. Teens want to party, they want to get out and be wild, be crazy. They need a space where they can suppress the social norms and just be what they are, feel what they feel, do what they feel like doing. How to fill that void? That’s a super tough question and I don’t have the answer for that. Maybe hosting a retreat in the garden doing unconventional dynamic meditation.

According to recent studies, high numbers of students have said that the pandemic has made their mental health problems worse.

Losing school routines can cause an increase in feelings of anxiety, loneliness, and isolation. The pandemic may make it difficult to identify students who are in need. Schools provide mental health services and other supports. If schools are operating minimally, there is less opportunity to get this support. Recognize that students and their families are struggling to balance different demands.

We are coming into event season, and it is important that we can return to celebrating and enjoying what makes our community so special. Fortunately, many of our special events are in the great outdoors, but they are still responsible for offering safe options for attendees and keeping the health of our community as highest priority.

Washoe County comprises two cities, vast swaths of land, and numerous neighborhoods, and COVID has touched us all. But we must remember that this is a regional challenge with a regional solution. Your local representatives are working hard to ensure that public health and safety is tantamount to quality of life. We thank you for entrusting us with this monumental task.

Emily opens Sue's email, her eyes eager to decipher the meaning of every carefully strung line of words in the single paragraph, and the observatory language she uses carries a breeze down memorylane. “I can hear her!” she thinks, and elation moves throughout her body to where it settles, at the girl‘s heart center. After having grazed the report, her eyes skip back to the beginning and come to rest on a simple 3-worded question: “How are you?” She can hear the abbreviation of her name attached to the questions tail-end. “How are you, Em?” The girl lowers her eyes from the screen, pondering the most truthful, yet uplifting comeback she can respond with. This is what it said: I am currently working on a research paper on altered states of consciousness (one of the most interesting topics I have ever come across!), that will be graded together with my final school exam as

Having attended high school for the greater part of my life, I have little expectation for how “life after school” will look like.

Recently questions regarding the bigger life picture have been arising within me, and I’m left wondering if I want to let my life transpire in the “bustle” of society, that never seems content or satisfied, and is transfixed on constant change and movement.

“It is not about who you are, it is about what you do,” it calls.

With the mentality of ever-harvesting change and future-oriented thinking, the acceptance of what is becomes a challenge, a difficulty even. “Faster and more efficient and more” the motto sounds. It seems to only ever crave more. More success, more education, more status, more possessions, more wealth, more health, more friends, more development of this, more development of that,… it is always MORE MORE MORE! I wonder if a quieter life, a stiller and simpler life, in a village somewhere in the outskirts of town, giving back to the community by the means of something that isn’t pressure, but genuine will and freedom, might be more suitable. I imagine a space in which I am free to exert myself with the least amount of conditioning possible, a space in which I can be without the never-ceasing need to do. Having observed the nature of the ever-evolving society in my mere 18 years of life, I have been witness to the immense amount of stress that is laid on the individual and his ambitions to succeed; an act that is supported and acknowledged as normalcy particularly in western culture .And of course, it is important to note that acceptance did not abolish slavery, acceptance did not diminish racism, acceptance did not establish the suffragists movement, acceptance did not contrive the degree of social justice we have today,…but it is the absence of acceptance that leads to a life trapped in a conceptual reality of thought forms, suffering from various forms of anxiety and depression, and battling with the unsettlement and frustration that comes from never feeling “good enough.” This life that lies ahead of so many of us is a life I do not wish to partake in. I am in favour of a life focused on being and holding space for what truly is. A space in time in which I get to witness the life that unfolds around me, with love and with a deep-felt sense of understanding for what it means to simply be. And so with, I am considering the steps needed to attain such a life. Because in the end of it all, what matters most to me is that I have lived in alignment with my essence, my inner goddess, and I have breathed life through the divinity of her being.

So…How am I doing? I am tired of thinking, overwhelmed with feeling, wrought with uncertainty with respect to future-planning, frustrated with schoolwork, and yet, I feel a profound sense of gratitude for having been given life in the first place.
