Volunteers on the ArrowCreek Board and on the 10 committees that make recommendations to the Board are the life blood of ArrowCreek. They provide their time to put the community first and make it a premier community to live within. Together, they form the governing system of our not-so-small community. With 26 miles of roads, 21 miles of pathways, 2,900 acres making up the community, 957 homes, and an annual budget of $3 million, governance of ArrowCreek is indeed a large undertaking that needs the talents of those who volunteer to help.

Her memories of treasured times with her grandparents and the fun she is having with her own grandchildren shape her creative side of documenting the special relationships and moments of life for young and old to treasure.

Susan grew up in the Midwest (Chicago suburbs and Wisconsin) and attended school/studied German in Germany and Austria.

After college she has lived in southern Illinois; Memphis, TN; Glen Burnie/Annapolis, MD; Yorkshire, England; San Jose/Los Angeles, CA and Reno, NV. She has seen many parts of the world and studied many cultures along the way.

Susan and her husband Ron bought their piece of high desert land in ArrowCreek in 2000 and celebrated their new home in July 2004. After 11 years of every other weekend and holiday car trips between Los Angeles and Reno, Susan and Ron moved full time into ArrowCreek in 2012 when Ron retired. Susan retired in 2017 and tends to her mother who had suffered a massive stroke. Susan loves to paint with oil and acrylics and is a founding member of the ArrowCreek Art Guild. She has displayed and sold her artwork at various ArrowCreek Art Guild shows. Her favorite subjects are the Reno sunrises and sunsets so aptly viewed from ArrowCreek.

This year Artown’s festival footprint has moved from its traditional home at Wingfield Park Amphitheater on the Truckee to Washoe County’s Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Artown staff felt that the festival needed more room than the Amphitheater could

STUDENT ACTIVITY CENTER WITH PROJECTED 2022 OPENING Sage Ridge School is pleased to announce that it will be breaking ground within the next few weeks on its new Student Activity Center.

The groundbreaking follows the success of the public phase of its AIM (Achieve, Innovate, and Magnify) Capital Campaign, a three-phase building project, which began this past March, and the receipt of a very generous challenge grant.

The 24,004-square-foot Student Activity Center boasts a 13,000-square-foot gymnasium named after Northern Nevada gaming legend Ernest J. Primm, known by many members of our community as Ernie. Members of Primm’s family spanning multiple generations and close friends made the public phase of the campaign possible by raising and pledging collectively over $2 million toward the funding of the approximate $7 million Student Activity Center. At one time, Primm owned the largest contiguous block of real estate in downtown Reno. Primm is credited for pioneering the start of Reno’s modern gaming industry in the 1950s and 1960s and changing the face of the tourist industry in Reno.

“We are thrilled and honored that our future home court and gymnasium will be known as the Ernest J. Primm Gymnasium,” said Sallie Armstrong, the Chair of Sage Ridge School’s Board of Trustees. “Ernie’s impact on Reno makes this gift meaningful in many ways — it ties Reno’s past to Sage Ridge’s present and future and in a way that reminds our students and community to honor and recognize those who paved the way. Ernie was a community leader and one of Reno’s early entrepreneurs who worked hard to achieve and accomplish all he did. Sage Ridge, each and every day, teaches our students to be leaders and provides them a path to achieve, innovate, and inspire others.”

The premier gymnasium features a top-tier maple hardwood oor and bleacher seating for 756. The facility also will include a stateof-the-art tness center, modern locker rooms, athletic office, concessions stand, concourse, Hall of Fame, and several multipurpose academic and social lounges.

“The Student Activity Center will serve as the heart and home of our campus and will allow us to continue to build on our reputation of educational excellence. It will be a one-of-a-kind facility that will have a positive impact not only on Sage Ridge but also on our region,” Head of School Tobin Bechtel said. “With Reno’s increased demand for new and updated facilities, the Student Activity Center can serve as a quality venue for the community — for youth sports tournaments, academic competitions and special events.”

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam recently announced a change to how the Sheriff’s Office responds to burglary crimes. As of April 5, 2021, Deputies, or a Sheriff’s Office Specialist, will respond to calls for any burglary which has occurred in the past.

Deputies or a Specialist will gather information, evidence, and increase patrols in affected neighborhoods.”

“Partnership and communication between our community members and Washoe County Deputy Sheriffs is imperative to stop these types of crimes from happening,” said Sheriff Balaam. “If an individual reports being a victim of one crime, it can provide us intelligence that helps the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office protect the whole of the community. Our deputies can identify patterns and suspects to prevent future, related crimes.”

In the summer of 2011, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office moved away from in-person response to past-tense burglaries. By that time, then-Sheriff Mike Haley had reduced his budget by more than $28 million in a span of four years as a result of the Great Recession.

Haley instead moved past-tense burglary cases to online reporting.

Current research shows more than half of property crimes are not reported to law enforcement because victims “Don’t think anything will happen,” or “They won’t get their items back.” Another reason victims tend to not report past-tense burglaries is, oftentimes, banks or insurance companies replace the value of the loss.

“Throughout the past year our entire commissioned staff has been training on a proactive crime reduction policing model called Stratified Policing,” said Sheriff Darin Balaam. “Our transition to in-person response is with the express goal of reducing vehicle and residential burglary crimes by 15% within one year’s time.”

What you need to know: If you wake up to your vehicle being broken into overnight, if you arrive home and your house is ransacked, or if you arrive to work and burglars made a mess of your workplace, call the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency dispatch line at 775.785.WCSO. This aligned feeder model allows us to greatly improve the planning and alignment between each school. The first and most important alignment is what we call our essential standards. These are a critical subset of the standards from each grade level that are essential to a student’s success in the next grade level. As a middle school, if we know exactly what skills students come with, we are much more efficient in building upon those skills. Likewise, our students benefit when we know the exact skills we need to focus on to prepare them for success at the next level.

We certainly hope the 21-22 school year allows for a more normal flow to the school year. We know for sure that MHMS will be growing. In our first year we had an enrollment of just over 700 students. We currently have 820 students enrolled for next school year and are very excited to welcome these additional students to our amazing school.

These visits are invaluable as we seek to align the work we do at every campus. Sometimes they come up on my back and tailgate until I try to pull over to let them pass. There are a lot of people who have dogs, and sometimes a pet gets loose.

We do not want them or the wild animals to be hurt by speeding drivers too. What is being done to stop these bad drivers?

Response: That section of High Vista is indeed dangerous for pedestrians. With the curve, it is a blind spot, and many drivers do speed there. However, we cannot put a crosswalk where there is a line-of-sight obstruction. Also, since there is no pathway on Rue Saint Michele, the crosswalk would have to go into the street, which is also not good. Walkers should not cross there because it is such a precarious location. We will put additional signage uphill from Rue Saint Michele warning drivers to slow down because pedestrians may be crossing.

This can lead to property damage and impact the welfare of the bear.

Birdfeeders are also an attractant to bears. We at NDOW understand the joy of watching birds, but feeders attract bears (and bobcats) to the area. Ideally residents should remove their birdfeeders during the spring, summer and fall to eliminate this attractant. If residents insist on feeding the birds, we ask that they consider simply throwing a few handfuls of birdseed on the ground in the morning. This allows the birds to clean it up while making it difficult on the bear, and you still get to watch wild birds in your yard.

It usually starts with garbage. Did you know that Washoe County has an ordinance prohibiting wildlife from gaining access to garbage? If you have a garbage can knocked over by a bear, you are in violation of that Washoe County Health Code. There is an easy solution to this issue. NDOW has worked with Waste Management to have them provide bear-resistant containers (BRC) to residents upon request. You simply call Waste Management (775-3298822) to ask for one and they will trade out your current polycart for the more secure BRC. This does come with a slight fee increase but it is far cheaper and easier than the $100 fine you could face if you are found in violation of the code. The added benefit of a BRC is that you leave it outside, not in your garage, and therefore you

To avoid your barbecue from becoming an attractant and subject to destruction by a bear, we advise that residents burn their barbecue on high for 10 minutes after you are finished using it. This burns off any leftover grease and food that may cause a bear to take interest in it.
