Elyse Pignolet: Boys Will Be Boys October 31 – December 23, 2020 “Boys Will Be Boys” is a series of ceramic sculptures and watercolor paintings imbued with traditional porcelain decoration from around the world, the vessels depicted contain familiar patterns and motifs but upon closer inspection, reveals ubiquitous flower patterns have been reimagined with text referencing Trump’s many unsettling and demeaning comments on women, references to elected figures publicly accosting female colleagues, sexual assault and the everyday experience of street harassment and gendered stereotypes. The tension between the decorative floral arrangement and the vulgar text speaks as much to the contemporary world woman face daily as it does to the political climate in the US today. Says the artist, “Intentionally, I begin my process with something strongly associated with the feminine... pretty, decorative, domestic, familiar, a vase, a flower arrangement. My hope is to then slightly create a shift: to make the situation a bit uncomfortable, a bit strange. Perhaps offensive or even vile. I’m interested in contrasts”.
