Grâce à sa zone économique exclusive de 5,5 millions de km2 , la pêche représente un important secteur de l’économie polynésienne. Elle y allie les activités de pêche industrielle (hauturière), tournée partiellement vers l’export, et de pêche traditionnelle, côtière ou lagonaire. La pêche hauturière assure une production annuelle moyenne de 6 000 tonnes. Le thon est la principale espèce pêchée qui compte pour 90 % des prises. Les autres sont le marlin, la daurade coryphène (mahi mahi), le thazard et le saumon des dieux. La production congelée est marginale, mais se développe chaque année. Depuis 2018, la Polynésie française est certifiée MSC Pêche Durable pour une durée de cinq ans. Cela concerne la pêche polynésienne de thon germon et albacore à la palangre. L’aquaculture en Polynésie française est peu développée, mais est une filière à fort potentiel. La production aquacole polynésienne concerne la crevetticulture, l’aquaculture de bénitier et la pisciculture lagonaire. Il existe également une aquaculture récifale, qui produit des poissons destinés à l’aquariophilie.

Thanks to its exclusive economic zone of 5.5 million km2, fishing represents an important sector of the Polynesian economy. It combines industrial fishing activities (offshore), partially oriented towards export, and traditional fishing, coastal or lagoon. Mainly used for fresh fishing, deep-sea fishing ensures an average annual production of 6,000 tonnes per years. Tuna is the main species fished (especially albacore, but also yellowfin and bigeye tuna), which accounts for 90% of the catches. Since 2018, French Polynesia has been MSC Sustainable Fishing certified for a period of five years. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has granted certification for the Polynesian albacore and yellowfin tuna longline fishery. Aquaculture in French Polynesia is underdeveloped, but it is a sector with great potential. Polynesian aquaculture production concerns shrimp farming, giant clam aquaculture and lagoon fish farming.
