A Journey Across the World

This summer, CCI Health & Wellness Services shines the spotlight on its refugee health assessment program. CCI Health & Wellness Services works in partnership with the state of Maryland to help humanitarian immigrants, which include refugees, asylees, special immigrant visa holders (SIV), and victims of trafficking.

When these patients arrive at CCI Health & Wellness Services, it is their first exposure to health care in the U.S. The past three years more than 1,300 patients have passed through this program.

Recently, a 15-year-old refugee and his family came to CCI Health & Wellness Services for health assessments. Having had poor health care experiences, the patient was quiet and distant, unwilling to answer the nurse’s questions or receive testing. The nurse attempted to connect with the patient by explaining the purpose and process of each assessment, which helped the patient trust the nurse and be more comfortable with opening up. At the end of the visit, the patient thanked CCI Health & Wellness Services and the refugee health care team for helping him, saying that he was glad he had a great experience unlike experiences he has had in the past.
