Impact of Cathedral Catholic’s Scholarships

$300,000 was awarded to 42 students through scholarships during the 2022-2023 school year.

I am honored and very grateful to be a recipient of the Fr. Michael Ortiz Scholarship. Thanks to this scholarship, I can continue striving for academic excellence while serving my beloved community in the best way possible. I, myself, am able to give back to the school by being an Ambassador for Christ, through which I represent my school with pride and make prospective families eager and elated to experience a glimpse of the closely-knit Dons community. I am also involved in National Honor Society and serve as a lead on-campus tutor for the society while participating in impactful service projects that focus on giving back to our amazing employees and the outside community in need. I am also a part of the National English Honor Society, Co-President of the Numbers-N-Neighbors Math Tutoring Club, member of the Spanish, Math and Music Honor Societies, and I have been part of California Scholastic Federation since 7th grade. When I am not participating in service activities, I am often out on the trails as a student-athlete in Varsity Cross Country. In college, I plan on majoring in business administration to make an impact not only on the Major League Baseball community but also on a much broader community that I hope to serve. While I am not sure exactly what lies ahead, I know my future is brighter thanks to the opportunities and the scholarships that have been bestowed upon me and the values of character, faith, knowledge and responsibility that have been instilled in me by Cathedral Catholic High School.

Supporting the Dons Through Cathedral Catholic’s Scholarships

Fr. Mike Ortiz joined the Dons community in 2006 as the school chaplain after previously serving as a chaplain for the United States Army for 30 years. He was the school’s only full-time chaplain for a few years before the Miles Christi priests joined the community. Fr. Mike greatly enjoyed saying Mass, offering spiritual direction, speaking to classes and being the football team’s chaplain before his retirement in 2020. Fr. Mike loved being around students, and he still loves to meet and chat with students whenever he visits campus. Early on during his time at Cathedral Catholic, Fr. Mike realized there were many families that needed help affording a Catholic education. Thus, in August 2010, he started the Fr. Michael Ortiz Scholarship to support the Dons. This $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student who is actively involved in community service and who practices and models Christian values. When asked why he gives to Cathedral Catholic, Fr. Mike shared, “This community is a family. Even though I am no longer working on campus, I feel satisfied by continuing to support the Dons family through my scholarship.”

$560,600 was donated in support of our scholarships last fiscal year. Interested in supporting one of Cathedral Catholic’s scholarships? Visit www.cathedralcatholic.org/makeagift.
