President and Principal Message Welcome to Cathedral Catholic High School! We hope that you will enjoy this Viewbook as a means to learn more about our school community, our school family!

Cathedral Catholic’s mission is to create an innovative academic community of lifelong learners grounded in the Catholic faith that prepares our graduates to live God’s call and build the Kingdom.

We are thankful for the 1,600+ students who share their talents, successes and struggles with us each school day. We are grateful for their parents who willingly and generously share their time, talent and treasure in partnering with us to make Cathedral Catholic High School the outstanding school community. We are grateful for our priests and lay religious leaders who ground us in faith and inspire us to live God’s call and to build His Kingdom. We are thankful for our security staff and members of our facilities department that work diligently to provide all of us with a safe and secure school environment. We are thankful for our beautiful school that serves us well in providing an academic setting in which all students may succeed. We are thankful for our state-of-the-art athletic facilities that allow us to play successfully at the highest levels of competition and for our visual and performing arts programs that provide our students with a variety of opportunities to discover their many personal gifts.

Our Cathedral Catholic High School faith community is called to live the call of Jesus and reflect upon the Catholic values of charity, service, and social justice. Our Cathedral Catholic High School core value of character inspires our students to respect themselves and others, value diverse people and cultures, and practice ethical citizenship and leadership. Our community prayer calls for us to build the Kingdom by making moral choices to improve our community and ourselves.

HIGHER EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP, DUAL ENROLLMENT Cathedral Catholic High School is pleased to partner with a higher education institution to allow our students to earn transferable college credit from our campus.

Our partnership with MiraCosta Community College offers 12 courses.

ACADEMICS Accreditations Cathedral Catholic High School is a college preparatory school, accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). CCHS holds membership with the College Board.

Curriculum The daily academic program is organized on a rotating schedule. A typical schedule consists of 35 credits (7 classes) per semester. Students meet for three classes on Monday and four classes per day Tuesday through Friday.

PRE-ENGINEERING PROGRAM

SPECIAL EDUCATION

Cathedral Catholic High School’s Pre-Engineering Program is designed to provide students with the skills needed to succeed in future Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Programs. It includes specialized courses in addition to high level core courses. Upon graduation, students who have completed the 8 required courses will receive a “Graduated with a Distinction in Engineering” recognition on their transcript.

CCHS students learn the importance of faith in action through service. They use their gifts to change the world - one kind interaction at a time. This is a fully communal approach wherein the entire CCHS community, faculty, staff and students works together in order to:

Cathedral Catholic High School is committed to creating a supportive academic learning environment for all students including those with diagnosed learning differences through special education support. Students who qualify for special education support must have a diagnosed disability with an impact on learning through a Psycho-Educational Evaluation.

IMMERSION TRIPS

Service

CCHS Students have several opportunities throughout the year to encounter and learn from underserved communities, both in the United States and Internationally. Students seek to serve God by working alongside and building relationships with the people they meet. Students serve and learn on trips to: - Appalachia, West Virginia - Los Angeles, CA - Washington, DC - US/Mexican Border and Various International Locations

All CCHS students take part in this comprehensive program coordinated by our Mission and Ministry Office and assisted by our Campus Ministry student leaders. Throughout the school year our students serve across the San Diego area at Father Joe’s Villages, elder care facilities, schools and other organizations.

We offer academic support through three tiers of Special Education Programs:

Academy Program • Diploma bound program based on CA state standards • Co-Taught classes for English, Mathematics, Social Science & Science • Inclusion in neurotypical CCHS setting for Religion and elective classes • Classes are non UC/CSU approved, non A-G courses

STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM Each year, CCHS participates in an exchange with a school in Argentina. In January, we welcome students from Nuestra Señora de las Nieves.

In summer, students from CCHS will travel to Argentina, where they will be completely immersed.

This trip is open to sophomores and juniors who have successfully completed Spanish 2.

STATE-OF-THE-ART-FACILITIES Our classrooms offer teachers and students a wide variety of options to collaborate and present. Each teacher has a laptop and iPad or iPad Pro. Each classroom is equipped with

a projector, Apple TV and cable TV. These tools give teachers a choice in how to best present

material. Also, access to Apple TV allows both students and teachers to present from their

own devices.

The USDHS Academic Center at Cathedral Catholic has become a major center for students. Students are able to meet in small groups or go into a separate room for silent study.

APPLE DISTINGUISHED SCHOOL For the third term, Cathedral Catholic High School was recognized as an Apple Distinguished school for the 2013 - 2015 school years, 2015 - 2017 then again for 2017-2019 school years for providing school-wide, one-to-one access to Apple iPads for all students, teachers and administrators.

In 2017, our Director of Educational Technology, Mrs. Kathy Garcia was named an Apple Distinguished Educator. ADEs are part of a global community of educational leaders recognized for doing amazing things with Apple technology in and out of the classroom. They explore new ideas, seek new paths, and embrace new opportunities that includes working with each other and with Apple to bring the freshest, most innovative ideas to our students and faculty.

CHALLENGE SUCCESS Cathedral Catholic has partnered with Challenge Success, a non-profit, school reform organization affiliated with the Stanford University Graduate School of Education. Our partnership will help Cathedral Catholic implement practical, research-based tools and strategies to create a more balanced and academically fulfilling life for all students.

RACIAL AWARENESS FORMATION Cathedral Catholic High School is committed to anti-racism work. As a Catholic school, we have a moral obligation to uphold the dignity of every human person and to teach that racial prejudice is incompatible with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

FACULTY Cathedral Catholic High School teachers care deeply about our students. Our faculty chooses to work at CCHS because they, too, believe in the CCHS mission to create lifelong learners who live the call and build the Kingdom.

COUNSELING

The counseling office at Cathedral Catholic High School offers counseling services based on grade specific needs, while also, when needed, giving more attention to students at all grade levels. Students will have a guidance counselor for freshman year through fall of junior year to focus on the transition to high school, academic performance, social needs and college exploration. In the spring of junior year, students will transition to their college counselor to finalize and execute post-high school plans.

ALUMNI

Dons’ Legacy Cathedral Catholic High School has a rich heritage comprised of over 60 years and three campuses. Cathedral Girls’ High School, located in downtown San Diego, was founded in 1943. In 1970 Cathedral Girls merged with University High School, founded in 1957, on the campus in Linda Vista. In 2005, UNI transitioned up to the Carmel Valley campus and took on its new name, Cathedral Catholic High School. No matter what campus you were on…Once a Don, Always a Don. The Dons’ Legacy has never been stronger. 50+ alumni are among the CCHS team of administrators, faculty, coaches, and staff.

Cathedral Catholic High School strives to make Catholic secondary education affordable for our families. Campus Tours Campus Tours are conducted by appointment. Your tour will be led by a member of our Admissions Team and a student ambassador. Parents and students are both encouraged, but not required, to take a tour.

Over four million dollars is budgeted annually for need-based tuition assistance, with approximately 35% of our student population receiving some level of tuition assistance. There are over 30 scholarships incoming and current students can apply for.

For more information regarding tuition assistance, please visit www.fairapp.com. In order to submit an application, please enter our school code of 118 and password, which is cchs118. Please return to the FAIR application website to check on the status of the results, which should process within approximately two weeks. You may contact our Business Office to review the results, once they have been processed.

Open House Join us for an Open House in the fall or the spring. You will get to meet different members of our community and: • Tour the campus • Talk to our Parent Association • Attend break-out sessions to learn about Academics, Alumni, Athletics, Clubs, Curriculum, Technology, Learning Center, and so much more!

Shadow Visits - “Don for a Day” To get a firsthand look at a day in the life of a Don, we encourage 8th grade students to spend a morning with a current student. During a Shadow Day, future Dons are paired with a current Don ambassador who will take the future Dons to class, answer any questions, and show the future Don the campus.
