Dear Dons Family, Looking back at the recently completed 2019-2020 school year, I realize that the past year was like no other in my 44 years as a Catholic educator. The reality of the Covid-19 pandemic and surrounding events created the need for plans and actions that have no previous context in any of our lives. In the midst of the California “Stay at Home” order and the closure of all California schools, our Bishop, the Most Reverend Robert W. McElroy, shared that the transition of our Catholic schools to distance learning has been a magnificent achievement and a great sign of vitality within the Church in this time of the pandemic. Our teachers’ efforts and dedication to transitioning to a new way of teaching have been nothing short of exemplary. Our teachers have embraced new modes of pedagogy, creative methods of maintaining student engagement, communicating with parents, and answering questions from our parent community. Our entire school community worked diligently during this time and all were outstanding examples of servant leaders. Support staff was instrumental in keeping communication open between families and the school while supporting the school’s leadership efforts. Security and facilities personnel worked to keep the campus safe and ready for the Dons school community. The admissions team and advancement officers were dedicated to accepting new students and raising the necessary funds to keep our community whole. The business office worked faithfully and consistently to keep our financial operations flowing smoothly. Counselors modified their program design, created meaningful virtual opportunities for academic, college, and socialemotional support, and fielded inquiries, questions, and concerns from students and parents. Administrators were collaborative, selfless, thoughtful, and responsive to the needs of each moment. They worked tirelessly during our time in distance learning, supporting students, parents, faculty, counselors, and staff. Students and parents should be recognized for their efforts during the past several months. Our students should be proud of adjusting to the “new normal” while being isolated from their friends and the social aspects of the Dons family. While being home with their students, parents were thrust into the role of teachers, mentors, and sometimes even as administrators. Thank you to our parents and students for staying the course. May we all work together to keep our school community whole during this time of pandemic with the hope of returning to a school life that is not the “new normal” but indeed the “real normal!” Sincerely,

Dear Dons Community, The novel coronavirus caught us all by surprise. This ubiquitous and mysterious virus has challenged our resiliency, faith, and sense of community. Despite the on-going challenges, the strength of the Cathedral Catholic community has never been more clear to me. This past year, Cathedral Catholic was re-accredited for a full six-year term. We have a really good school with really good people, but we can always do more. The self-study process helped affirm the need to dive deeper in the hard work of school improvement. As such, Cathedral Catholic is launching an initiative to challenge the contemporary definition of high school success. Over the past few years, and especially the last few months, the spiritual and emotional health, well-being, and academic engagement of our students has been a growing concern. I anticipate an increase in student struggles this year, given the on-going pandemic and the social unrest of the past several months. Cathedral Catholic is not exempted from the following national statistics: • Thirty-three percent of high school students report being actively disengaged in school. • Seventy-three percent of school students report being often or always stressed by school work. • Thirty percent of high school students report symptoms of anxiety and depression. Furthermore, school administrators seek to promote and sustain a culture of balance and wellbeing for the adults in our community. We want all constituents to be versed in strategies that promote emotional and physical well-being, as well as skills to cope with stress and worry. We are partnering with a research-based school reform program based at Stanford University called Challenge Success. This year-long program will be a community-based effort to improve an already excellent Catholic, college preparatory education. As a Catholic school, this opportunity for self-reflection will only strengthen our commitment to the dignity and value of every human person. I am convinced the effort to move our school forward will ensure that a Dons education continues to bring immense joy and value to our families, and to the greater San Diego community for years to come.

Add Pulitzer Prize to Resume USDHS alumna Mrs. Molly O’Toole wins the first Pulitzer Prize given to audio reporting. Cole Cume ‘20, Editor and Chief for the El Cid 6

Los Angeles Times immigration and security reporter and University of San Diego High School alumna Mrs. Molly O’Toole ‘05 received a lifechanging email from her top editors. The subject of the email simply read “Molly.” “I thought that I was in trouble,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “I thought maybe the Department of Homeland Security had finally gotten to my bosses and told them I was causing too much trouble. “Eventually, I realized it was Pulitzer day, and I thought maybe there is a small chance in hell that we had won.” As the first recipient in USDHS/CCHS history, Mrs. O’Toole won the first Pulitzer Prize for audio reporting for her reporting and interviews with U.S. asylum officers who had the job of sending immigrants back to dangerous situations, on the podcast episode “The Out Crowd,” of the podcast series This American Life. Mrs. O’Toole shared the award with the staff of This American Life and freelancer Ms. Emily Green.

“Since I was in high school, the journalism industry has been hit so hard in so many ways that now it feels not remotely practical to get in the industry.” Former USDHS English teacher Mrs. Marilyn Harmaning helped develop Mrs. O’Toole’s writing structure, while observing the attributes which made Mrs. O’Toole prime for journalism. “She had a spunky edge to her,” Mrs. Harmaning said. “I remember her being a very curious young lady, which I always equated with intelligence. She was taking a difficult mix of courses while running cross country, yet I don’t remember a single complaint.

The U.S. border sprouted Mrs. O’Toole’s interest in journalism, so garnering a Pulitzer Prize for covering immigration to the United States was appropriate. “Growing up in San Diego, I was always amazed that I could see Mexico from the hills in my neighborhood,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “We don’t always think of San Diego as a border city, but I was intrigued at a young age by how I was born on the other side of this arbitrary border and how different that made my life.” While at USDHS, O’Toole recognized her affinity for writing and aspired to be an author. She concluded that authorship may be impractical for an early career and journalism was more realistic. O’Toole jokes about her pragmatic judgment.

“I just remember her stick-to-itiveness, and I know that is what it takes, especially in investigative journalism.” Despite fostering interest in journalism while in high school, Mrs. O’Toole could not partake in the school newspaper due to her demanding sports schedule.

CCHS cross country coach Mr. Dan Geiger, who coached Mrs. O’Toole during her junior varsity and varsity days, recollects her social consciousness, driven nature and perseverance. “We were at the state meet and it absolutely poured rain,” Mr. Geiger said. “The course turned basically into a mud bog. For some people, that would dampen the experience because they had worked hard all season to get to that meet. “But I remember Molly going through the race and afterwards, [her] thinking it was the absolute best thing in the world to be running in mud. She started doing mudslides thinking it was a blast.” Mrs. O’Toole earned a degree in English at Cornell University, a school absent of a journalism major. “I still joke about it with friends, but my real education in college was at the Cornell Daily Sun, the student newspaper that is independent from the university,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “I will always remember the first time going into the newsroom and seeing the beautiful chaos of writing and editing copy.

Mrs. O’Toole traveled to Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, El Salvador, and Turkey, mastering the challenges of freelance reporting.

Staying in the same state, Mrs. O’Toole transitioned from the rural Cornell University community to New York University for graduate school. “Working as a young person and journalist in New York City was amazing, despite how hard it was,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “I got to work for some great places while at NYU, and had some amazing opportunities.” In the following years, Mrs. O’Toole wrote for a variety of publications. She served as a campaign correspondent during the 2016 election, and then she freelanced. “I felt like I was never going to be the foreign policy reporter that I wanted to be if I never spent

“What keeps you going is each story and project you do, you are really interested in,” Mrs. O’Toole said. Lessons emerged for Mrs. O’Toole while freelancing. “It is really unbelievable if you have experienced one side of the policies as I had done previously by reporting only in Washington,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “I don’t think you can measure the true impact of a U.S. policy until you are on the ground in that place and talking to those feeling the effects of the policy.” Mrs. O’Toole and her partner knew freelancing

abroad was temporary, so Mrs. O’Toole searched for jobs in the United States, and she discovered the opening at Los Angeles Times for immigration coverage. “The LA Times didn’t necessarily want a political reporter,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “They wanted a policy reporter who would cover immigration and tell how it actually is across the U.S. and beyond the U.S.

“It was the perfect job.” For Mrs. O’Toole, the transition to the Los Angeles Times felt like a homecoming. In Dec. 2018, Mrs. O’Toole took interest in the President Donald Trump administration’s handling of legal immigration and the de facto refugee camps on the Mexican border. “I developed a network of asylum officers, and I started including some of their testimony in my reporting,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “This American Life reached out, who I was already a very big fan of, and they explained how they were trying to get in touch with asylum officers and asked if I wanted to work with them.” President Trump’s administration implemented the Remain in Mexico policy which altered the process for legal immigration. Before the policy’s institution, asylum seekers who faced a risk of being killed or harmed if they returned to their home countries were given asylum. Later, they would be allowed to enter the United States and go before an immigration judge. The Remain in Mexico policy, officially called Migrant Protection Protocols, MPP, contradicted U.S. asylum law as it sent people back to situations in Mexico where they could be harmed or killed, according to the asylum officer interviewees.

This American Life submitted for Pulitzer Prize consideration for the new audio recording category. Mrs. O’Toole forgot about the submission amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, until she received the email with the subject line “Molly.” “It was in my wildest journalistic dreams that maybe before I die I might be a small footnote on a Pulitzer citation,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “And though there were years of work put in [to sharpen my craft.] I never thought it would happen so soon in my career.” Mrs. O’Toole expresses shock over the award and checks the Pulitzer site daily to make sure there was not an error, or what she calls a “digital pinch yourself.” “It is such a tough time in journalism right now with coronavirus and advertisers drying up completely,” Mrs. O’Toole said. “For me, the award was a hopeful reaffirmation that journalism matters and that it matters now more than ever, and I’m hopeful that people will continue to support the industry.”

Academics in a Pandemic Christy Bailleul, Dean of Academics As March approached, CCHS administrators and teachers became nervous about the path Covid-19 was making across the globe. As the cases of Covid-19 rose higher, we knew we had to prepare for the worst-case scenario: closing the school and moving to distance learning. On March 13, teachers, staff, and administrators gathered to prepare for a closure that had no real end date. We knew we were asking for our teachers to perform a miracle and move online in 48 hours. Our phenomenal teachers steadied themselves and got down to work. Our Ed Tech team went into overdrive as they supported the teachers, giving them best practices for online learning. Administrators posted themselves in the Academic Center and problem-solved with teachers about potential issues regarding instruction, assessments, and student wellness. Our community banded together to make sure that we would take care of our students and continue to provide quality education.

After weighing our options, we chose an asynchronous approach. One of the major benefits of asynchronous learning is that it allows students to work at their own pace. “Students may spend more time refining their contributions, which are generally considered more thoughtful compared to synchronous communication” (Hrastinski, 2008). This approach would allow for more processing time and would help combat technology and connectivity issues, which if not addressed would affect a student’s ability to learn. Our approach would also allow us to keep our original plan for the semester and deliver “easy access to online resources” (Dung, 2020). Students and teachers would be able to communicate using Google Meets, but the bulk of teaching and learning would be done at each student’s pace through teacher produced and archived video lessons and activities. Moving in this direction allowed our students to have the best chance to adjust to their new normal. When our closure extended through the rest of the year, our teachers and students requested

Teachers will develop their formative and low-risk assessments to guide students through the learning process and relieve the stress of high-stakes assessments in an online format (Perera-Diltz & Moe, 2014). Teachers, counselors, and administrators will not only act as educators but will also provide necessary study

skills support for all students (Supporting Student Success in Online Learning, 2019). We will support our students in the Catholic faith by providing multiple ways to learn and practice their faith through retreats, prayer services, and Mass. Covid-19 has provided some challenges for our community, but it also gave us the gift of refocusing our commitment to our students and families by providing the education and sense of family they deserve.

Connecting During COVID Leal Czerniak ‘22 and Anna Fazio ‘22 On Friday, March 13, 2020, we were informed that due to COVID-19 the entire school would be moving to an online learning and teaching platform. It only took Cathedral Catholic two days to get our school up and running. Teachers and students alike faced a huge learning curve as they prepared to work without in-person contact. Our teachers shined by getting creative with their new format of education. Many embraced technology and found different ways to connect with their students. Many students had positive things to say about their transition to distance learning. Nathan Joseph ‘22 said that one aspect that he likes is that his teachers are “posting assignments on Monday so that he can complete them easier.” Along with having more time to complete work, students expressed appreciation for having freedom on all assignments. Merrick McCadden ‘20 commented, “I like moving at my own pace.” Students also felt that online learning has helped them to improve their organization, productivity, 14

and time management. Many have enjoyed a more relaxed schedule because they have been able to spend more time at home with their families. When asked what she was the most grateful for, Jessica Laws ‘23 added, “Teachers have lessened the workload slightly and made sure to include an instructional video to help their students along the way.” Some students wanted to highlight the teachers who have made outstanding use of technology. Caitlin Woodmansee ‘21 said, “Mrs.Cairns use Flipgrid, which makes learning fun.” Other students had been entertained by the online interactions that they had. Kelli Jackson ‘23 sent us a picture of her dog, and on our Google Meet, she had him with her so we could see him. ” Lily Hogan-Maguire ‘21 was enthused by the school’s social media posts. She offered, “Mr. Filippone running the CCHS Dons Instagram account was pretty funny.”

The Administration and staff members made calls to each Cathedral family to check-in and to see how their family was doing during the pandemic.

Even though the campus was closed, Leighton and his security team made sure our campus was safe and secure. The end of the year awards, including academics and athletic awards, were live on the CCHS YouTube page.

The tech office created an online platform for students and teachers to seek help. Counselors did weekly check-in with students and were available for Google Meets.

Furthermore, the students expressed immense gratitude for their teachers’ flexibility during a challenging time. ” Students felt that online learning has helped them to improve their organization, productivity, and time management.” Students also had positive comments about the school’s usage of Google Meets. Isabelle Palomas ‘23 said, “I think Google Meets are a great learning opportunity for students to reconnect with their teachers from home.” Likewise, Jenna Crowly ‘22 said that the video calls are a “good resource for when she needs to ask a question or get clarification.”

However, students did miss the community on campus. Hanna Mackenhausen ‘20 summed up many of her peers’ feelings about distance learning: “Google Meets gave me an opportunity to ask questions and say ‘hi’ to my teachers and classmates. It’s not as good as it is in person, but the face-to-face interaction is the best that we have at the time, and I love it. I’m thankful for this resource because I would be much more anxious and confused without it. It is comforting just to see everyone else and to know that you’re not alone in this situation. We are all in this together.”

Cultural Celebrations at Cathedral Catholic The very first principle of Catholic Social Teaching (CST) asserts that every single life, from the moment of conception, during life, and until natural death, is sacred. Cathedral Catholic’s vision for an authentically Catholic and inclusive campus environment starts with this foundational principle. The last week of January was Catholic Schools Week, a week committed to celebrating the tradition of Catholic schools. This year’s theme was “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” The students and employees spent the week celebrating the diversity of cultures present at Cathedral Catholic. Each day gave our students the opportunity to share and learn from one another, in an effort to better embrace the cultural richness and beauty within our Cathedral Catholic community. Each morning started with prayer reflecting that day’s cultural celebration, sometimes in the native language, followed by cultural information. These are some of the words that describe Christ-like students who serve on and off campus. These servant leaders were recognized through the Dedicated Dons Award, which was presented at the closing of the liturgy each month before the Covid-19 shutdown. The Mission and Ministry team began handing out the award this past year. Mrs. Stacy Wells, Dean of Mission and Ministry, explains that they try to find “students who serve not for college credit, but out of passion and concern for others.”

For their efforts in recognizing the heroism of our local first responders, doctors and nurses. Morgan and Carrie organized a thank you card writing campaign where CCHS students let all of these folks on the front lines know how much they were appreciated.

While in quarantine this spring, Pooja Mehta recognized her many blessings - a nice home, a quality education, all of the food and clothing needed, a supportive family, and more. She also came to better understand the plight of those who are struggling especially during the time of COVID. She started a Go Fund Me page that raised a significant amount of money for relief organizations such as Catholic Charities.

National Migration Week In celebration of National Migration Week: “Promoting a Church and World for All” We lifted up in prayer migrants, refugees, and those victimized by human trafficking. In January, adults on campus demonstrated their commitment to offering a Catholic and inclusive environment by wearing t-shirts and communicating why they stand in solidarity with those on the margins or who are excluded in society.

United as One: The Class of 2020 The excitement of the Class of 2020 could be felt all across the campus. With the Spring sports season underway and 37 academic days left in their Senior year, they were on track to be the first Dons class to graduate in May. Except it came to a screeching halt on March 13, 2020! Unbeknownst to us all, it would be the last time we would all be on campus as a Dons Family. Even with an abrupt ending to their Spring Semester, the Dons Class of 2020 had quite the list of accomplishments. They RAISED the bar for school spirit at sporting events and rallies. They EXCELLED in academics, evident by the number of National Merit Scholarship winners and high Advanced Placement test scores. Despite the separation, our music class COMPOSED a song. Their FAITH was exemplified by the last and very powerful virtual Kairos retreat. They are forever 22

UNITED by this defining moment in their lives. There is no doubt this class will use their gifts to change the world and build the Kingdom. Uplifted by their resilience, Cathedral Catholic committed to celebrating the Dons Class of 2020. We amped up the pomp despite the circumstance and we celebrated our Dons: Over 100 employees spent an entire day bringing joy to our 410 Seniors when they delivered the Senior Graduation Signs. “Roll DONS!” took on a literal meaning at the Senior Appreciation Parade that lasted more than three hours. We hosted a virtual live-streamed Baccalaureate Mass and Awards presentation from our St. Therese Chapel. We concluded the celebrations with the Grande Finale, two drive-in graduation ceremonies, where each of our Seniors were able to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas.

An Etched Tribute Strength, resilience, courage, and grit are words we’ve used to describe our Dons Class of 2020. They challenged themselves under normal circumstances and excelled under the pressures of an international pandemic. We honor them with a lasting tribute made possible by the Balo Family and preparations were completed by the Chong family. We are grateful to each of them! With much excitement, we unveiled this lasting tribute to them on the day of their inperson graduation. All 410 names of the Dons’ Class of 2020 are now permanently etched in stone at the entrance gates to Alumni Park. You make us all proud to be called Dons!

CCHS Mock Trial Wins San Diego!

Cathedral Catholic High School Wins the 14th Annual San Diego County High School Mock Trial Competition with more than 600 Students Having Participated in this Annual Program.

Cathedral Catholic High School’s Mock Trial team outperformed 31 other County High Schools to win the annual legal competition. The San Diego County Mock Trial program provides high school students with actual experience in courtrooms beyond the rule of law from books and lectures. Dons Sports Hall of Fame Induction Shea Linnehan ‘21, Sports Editor for the El Cid The 10th Annual Dons Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held in the Guadalupe Center on the campus of Cathedral Catholic High School on Saturday, January 25th, 2020. The Hall of Fame committee inducted five new members, two coaches, a friend of sport, and a team. They were honored the night before the induction during halftime of the boys’ basketball game and at a formal sit-down dinner.

The Dons Sports Hall of Fame is to pay tribute and extend recognition to those individuals who, through the years, have contributed to the honor and fame of the Dons Athletic Program in the field of athletics, and who have continued to demonstrate, in their daily lives, the values learned in athletics. We also recognize those that have contributed to the success of the individual or team through meritorious service or inspiration. Members of the Dons Hall of Fame either attended Cathedral Girls High School, University of San Diego High School, Cathedral Catholic High School, or friends of the Dons.

Daniel Camarena ‘11 – Baseball Even though the Dons Sports Hall of Fame is rich with baseball players, Daniel Camarena becomes the 12th and newest member of the club. Camarena joins an elite team of professional ballplayers including Carlos Quentin ‘00 and Barry Zito ‘96. Camarena, a two-way player, collected nine home runs and 75 hits during his time on the varsity roster at CCHS. On the bump, Camarena reached top pitching speeds in the low 90s during his career for the Dons. The southpaw pitcher was lights out in his

high school career, boasting a 1.21 earned run average and a 20-3 record. Camarena was also named the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 Classic Division Lions Baseball Tournament, a firstteam All-CIF selection, and a San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federation Champion. The New York Yankees selected Camarena out of high school with its 20th round selection in 2011. Camarena has worked his way through Minor League Baseball, collecting a career 4.29 earned run average and 596 strikeouts.

Tyler Gaffney ‘09 – Football Tyler Gaffney, former CCHS multi-sport athlete and inductee for the Dons Sports Hall of Fame, is thankful for being recognized for his dedication and success. “It always feels great to earn an honor for something you loved doing,” Gaffney said. “It feels good to be noticed for the work put in.” Gaffney managed to play baseball and football at the high school, college, and professional level, a feat few athletes have ever accomplished. Whether it was on the diamond or the gridiron, Gaffney amazed fans during his CCHS tenure. 36

Gaffney tallied more than 5,500 yards and contributed 99 touchdowns for the Dons as a running back, but his pure athleticism and self-assurance made him unique. “Tyler is an incredible athlete, and he could do everything,” CCHS Head Football Coach Mr. Sean Doyle said. “He believed he could do anything, which is a big part of sports.” The accomplishments piled up after his graduation from CCHS, Gaffney excelled at Stanford University, where he rushed for 1709 yards and 22 total touchdowns in 2013, earning him USA Today Second Team All-American honors,

a Pac 12 Championship and Most Valuable Player Award at the Pac 12 Championship game.

Football League Career, Gaffney added two Super Bowl rings to his already loaded trophy case.

The Pittsburgh Pirates selected him in the 24th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and the Carolina Panthers drafted Gaffney in the sixth round of the National Football League Draft. Gaffney played for the State College Spikes in 2012 and the Bradenton Marauders in 2018, a minor league baseball affiliate for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In between Gaffney’s professional baseball years, Gaffney suited up for the Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, and the Jacksonville Jaguars. During his National

Hannah Gilliland ‘14 – Softball Hannah Gilliland ’14 always strived to further the CCHS softball program since she stepped foot on campus freshman year. Gilliland guided the program greatly, shattering records and becoming a four-time letter winner under Coach Miss Margaret Mauro. “It was a goal of mine to leave my mark on the program and help CCHS softball become as successful as possible,” Gilliland said. Gilliland holds multiple single-season records including a .513 batting average and 59 hits during her senior campaign at CCHS. Gilliland received high praise during her time at CCHS, earning Western League Player of the Year, San Diego Section first-team All-CIF, and secondteam All-State honors.

Gilliland, who attended the University of San Diego after high school, appeared in more than 125 games for the Toreros, and she was named to the 2018 West Coast Conference All-Academic Team. Gilliland remains humble as she appreciates her teammates and CCHS athletes who helped her softball career. “I played alongside so many incredibly talented teammates at [CCHS], so it is an absolute honor to be inducted into the Dons Sports Hall of Fame,” Gilliland said. “It feels surreal to be recognized out of all the amazing athletes who have come through [CCHS] softball, and I’m very grateful to have been nominated.

Coco Goodson ‘08 – Girls Soccer Whether it’s playing, coaching, or serving in the military, Coco Goodson ‘08 exemplifies the Cathedral Catholic High School spirit, earning herself a position in the Dons Sports Hall of Fame.

the game,” CCHS soccer player Sophia Aragón ‘21 said. “When she coached us, she held the same expectations as to those of a college soccer player.”

Goodson, a former CCHS standout girls soccer player, compiled an impressive career for the Lady Dons. The star defender played four years on varsity, earning three San Diego Section California Interscholastic Championships, first-team honors, the 2005 California Gatorade Rookie of the Year, and a college scholarship.

Following an impressive college career, Goodson was among the nation’s best women’s soccer players as she was drafted 21st overall by the Sky Blue Football Club in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Following her career at CCHS, Goodson played two years each at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of California, Irvine. During her junior year and first season at UCI, Goodson was an instant gamechanger, leading the Anteaters to its first National Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament appearance in school history. Goodson was a workhorse in her two years at UCI, starting 44 of 45 games. She built a strong senior season, good enough to win Big West Defender of the Year and first-team honors.

Playing soccer was not Goodson’s final goal, as joining the military fit her needs greatly. The CCHS girls soccer players use Goodson’s athleticism and characteristics as an example. “Coco is the epitome of Dawn’s Dons - hard worker, always doing what was best for her TEAM, coachable and always giving it her all both on the field and in the classroom. I was so lucky to coach Coco, have her as my assistance coach but more importantly to now have her a friend.”

Victoria Lippert ‘09 – Girls Basketball Athletics was not the only priority for eventual Harvard graduate Victoria Lippert, who earned over a 4.0-grade point average while dominating on the hardwood. The six-foot forward played in 91 games for the Lady Dons, averaging 21.1 points per game, 7.6 rebounds per game, and 1.5 steals per game in three varsity seasons at CCHS. Lippert managed to shoot 50% from the field on 1,492 attempts, yielding 1,924 career points during her time at CCHS. Lippert ranks among the top 15 leading scorers in the San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federation history. 40

Stats aside, Lippert led CCHS to three Western League titles and a San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federation Division III Championship. While playing for the Crimson, Lippert ended her career as the 14th leading scorer for Harvard University women’s basketball program. Lippert contributed important minutes all four years, earning her three All-Ivy second team and AllRookie team selections. Lippert portrays the meaning of a student-athlete as she successfully produced in the classroom and on the court.

Kelly O’Neill Drobeck ‘91 – Coach Former CCHS varsity girls volleyball coach Kelly O’Neill Drobeck was inducted into the Dons Sports Hall of Fame for her consistent and outstanding work on the court. Drobeck is a big part of CCHS’ historic girls volleyball legacy, contributing 14 California Interscholastic Federation Championships and three Division III State Championships. Currently, CCHS boasts the most San Diego Section California Interscholastic Federation Championships thanks to Drobeck’s dominance from 1998 to 2012.

Following her tenure as a student at the University of San Diego High School, Drobeck continued her volleyball and academic career at San Francisco State University. During her 1993 season, Drobeck led the Gators with 401 digs and 378 kills. Drobeck stands as the first girls volleyball coach to be inducted into the Dons Sports Hall of Fame.

Doug McLean – Coach Longtime USDHS/CCHS golf coach and teacher, Mr. Doug McLean will be the first boys golf coach inducted into the Dons Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. McLean contributed 25 years coaching the Dons golf team, 10 being the varsity head coach. Mr. McLean’s coaching stint ended in 2016, but his numerous successful seasons will not be forgotten. During his time on the links, Mr. McLean coached nine CCHS teams to the San Diego 42

Section California Interscholastic Federation Championships and two State Championships in 2005 and 2006. , finishing second and third in state respectively. He also coached five Division I college athletes and two professional golfers during the 2005 and 2006 seasons. Mr. McLean will forever be cemented into CCHS’ sports history and Hall of Fame.

Bob Vilven – Friend of Sport From the track field to the concession stands, Mr. Bob Vilven has dedicated more than 20 years to the CCHS sports community. Mr. Vilven became the 12th Friend of Sport member to enter the Dons Sports Hall of Fame. Whether he is running the snack bar or coaching the hurdles team, Mr. Vilven exemplifies what the CCHS community is about. “He does everything out of the kindness of his heart,” CCHS Track and Field Coach Mr. Dan Geiger said.

2008 CCHS Football Team The CCHS 2008 Varsity Football team becomes the third football team and the ninth team to be inducted into the Dons Sports Hall of Fame.

Defensively, Ryan Downing ‘09 and Jordan Lance ‘10 led the team in tackles with 129 and 117, respectively.

A victory against the Rams of St. Mary’s High School Stockton (SMHS) capped off the 2008 season with a California Interscholastic Federation Division II State Championship.

CCHS boasted a balanced attack, contributing 186.9 passing yards a game and 305.6 yards on the ground, alluding to 91 total touchdowns.

CCHS (14-0) (5-0) notched SMHS (12-3) (5-0) with a score of 37-34 to complete an undefeated season. The State Championship matchup was full of offense, the Dons and Rams tallied 616 and 489 total yards, respectively. Gaffney led the way for CCHS, accounting for five rushing touchdowns and 337 yards of total offense. Gaffney, along with quarterback Parker Hipp ‘09 and wide receiver Brad Harrington ‘09 spearheaded the offensive attack for CCHS. 44

The Dons sent numerous athletes to Division I college programs, including the likes of Stanford University, the University of Oregon, and the University of California, Berkeley. “As a team, they were a great group of kids who worked very hard,” CCHS Head Coach Sean Doyle said. “They were extremely talented, it was a great team.” The CCHS 2008 varsity football team set the program at new heights in which future teams look to replicate.

WCEA Visits Campus Cole Hume ‘20, Editor-in-Chief for the El Cid Granting the maximum six years of accreditation to Cathedral Catholic High School, the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) conducted their four-day campus visit from March 9-11, 2020 just before the coronavirus quarantine. After a multi-year self-study, which included comprehensive data gathering and integral group meetings, CCHS welcomed the visiting team on campus. Going into the visit, coordinator of the self-study and CCHS Dean of Academics Mr. Jeff McMurtry aimed for authenticity. “The most ideal scenario is not simply that we are accredited,” Mr. McMurtry said. “We want the study to be very authentic, which we feel like we did by having parents and students involved. We believe in the great things we have done, but it’s hard sometimes to notice the things we are not doing well. By listening to various voices and perspectives, we are able to locate our weaknesses and then grow from them.”

Accreditation, recognition of the credibility of an institution, is critical for the reputation and enrollment of a school. Moreover, the self-study required in the accreditation process allows schools to examine themselves and consider areas for growth. “It’s a school improvement process,” chair of the visiting team Mr. John Anson said. “Jim Collins, in the book Good to Great, said, ‘You are never as good today as you can be tomorrow,’ and that is the whole philosophy behind the process.” Involved in two previous CCHS accreditation visits, Mr. McMurtry labels past visits as ambitious as they sparked structural changes such as the addition of the iPads and of the seventh period. During the 2018-2019 academic year, integral group meetings addressing subjects like organizational efficacy and student support occurred on early-dismissal school days. Selected students stayed after school to partake in these sessions alongside selected parents, faculty, and administrators.

“In our discussions, we talked about what we do well,” said Mr. Greg Bobrinskoy, history and government teacher and member of the organizational efficacy integral group, “but instead of just listing our accomplishments, there was a real focus on ways we can strive to be even better.”

Mr. McMurtry and fellow administrators searched for items that sparked concern and labeled those as areas for growth, such as prioritization of wellness on campus.

“A growth mindset from the administration has been my experience since I began teaching here and I think it’s great for the school,” Mr. Bobrinskoy said.

According to Mr. McMurtry, wellness sprang up in dialogues throughout the different focus groups, which brought into question how departments outside of counseling can further emphasize it.

Throughout the accreditation process, visiting team members slide into classrooms and watch the different departments and teachers.

“The counselors should not be expected to be in charge of wellness,” Mr. McMurtry said. “They are not therapists, they are counselors. Teachers and deans should own wellness just as much as the counselors do, and we should see how we can promote wellness in areas like scheduling or curriculum.”

The final report links the conclusions from meetings to data. CCHS then constructs an educational improvement plan to address potential structural changes and areas for growth.

Though locating the areas of growth happens during the group meetings, the all-school database aids in identifying weaknesses. “The integral groups are the core of the selfstudy,” Mr. McMurtry said. “But the biggest piece is the all-school database, which took us about two years to collect all the information.” The all-school database includes surveys, demographic data about CCHS’s student and faculty population, standardized testing data, course enrollment data, co-curricular participation, and more. The library is updated each year, allowing the administration to look at trends and evaluate

All six of the visiting team members are educators at separate high schools, so they know what to look for when accrediting, according to Mr. Anson.

“Five of eight of our leadership team members have been working four years or less in administration at this school,” Mr. McMurtry said. “One of the best things about the self-study is how much this cadre of administrators got to really know their own institution by working so closely together. This self-study allowed us to really get in touch with the school and to have a shared vision.” During the visiting team’s concluding meetings, they praised the care fostered for each student and the welcoming nature of the diverse programs. More importantly, the visiting team appreciated the authenticity on display.

The comfort level students demonstrated on campus also impressed Mr. Anson and his team. Restorative discipline, which prioritizes dialogue and reflection as a means of growth rather than punishment, complements each student’s comfort and leads teachers to be more understanding of student’s actions, according to Mr. Anson.

“One thing that is hard for a school or person to do is to stop and look at oneself,” Mr. Anson said. “All six of us visiting team members admired how much work was put into transparency. I think that transparency really reflects the authenticity of the study. Everyone was very honest and willing to identify the weak spots so they could get better.

“At the school I work at, we have two goals: the first is to help get the kids into college, and the other is to get the kids into heaven. I see those same goals here at CCHS.”

Charity Bowl Father Joe’s Villages was in desperate need of blankets during the fall. CCHS teamed up with OLP and St. Augustine High School during the Holy Bowl week to collect new or slightly used blankets for the homeless in San Diego.

Humanity Work through the Memory Project Students from Cathedral Catholic High School helped to support the Memory Project’s work for refugee children in Malaysia. 20 of our National Art Honors Society and Art Club members with Ms. Brandeberry drew photos of these children. The Memory Project was able to deliver those portraits to the children as a gift in March, just before the global lockdown. Catholic Charities During COVID “For I was hungry and you gave me food” - Matthew 25:35 As we have all experienced, COVID-19 has changed life in San Diego in many ways. One new reality is the rapidly growing need for assistance for vulnerable populations experiencing job loss, decreasing income, and increasing food instability. Catholic Charities has responded with a new program called the Emergency Food Distribution Network (EFDN) which helps to provide food through parish drive-up and home delivery food pantries. Cathedral Catholic High School has partnered with Catholic Charities, providing the initial location for bulk food distribution. Food is delivered to CCHS then picked up by parishes who package and distribute the food to folks in need in their area. CCHS became involved at the start of the program and will continue to store and distribute food. This program has been incredibly 60

successful - in May alone EFDN provided over 10,000 meals to people in San Diego and Imperial counties. CCHS volunteers have been a huge help since day one in early April! Each Monday, volunteers help stage and load the bulk food items for each parish. We have also been packing bags for some parishes. Additionally, volunteers packed 2,000 backpacks for those experiencing homelessness who are being served at the Convention Center downtown. The CCHS and Catholic Charities partnership will continue through this and other new volunteer projects coming this fall. For a Time Like This Shout-out to Mrs. Tiffany Norris, CCHS School Counselor! She was one of five panelists of black Catholic educators from across the nation on the NCEA Catholic School Response to Systemic Racism discussion in June of 2020. Discussions centered on translating our beliefs into actions against racism in our Catholic schools and community. Mrs. Norris, along with the other guests, gave voice to the need for a powerful response in this pivotal moment in the life of the Church and our nation. Three-Peat for El Cid! Our student-run newspaper at CCHS, The El Cid, has earned the distinction of being a SNO Distinguished website for the third straight year. SNO is a student newspaper site that publishes stories written by high school and college journalists all over the country. This distinction honor is awarded after a student newspaper earns six badges. These badges include Excellence in Writing, Multimedia, Engagement, Story Page Excellence, Continuous Coverage and Site Excellence. FBI Immersion Heather Lyons ‘22

During the summer of 2019, Emma McIntosh ‘21 participated in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Teem Academy program. She spent the day at the FBI headquarters in Mira Mesa, where she interacted with agents and participated in forensic activities. The teens were exposed to a variety of investigation skills. Emma describes one of her favorites, “I learned how to lift a shoe print off the floor using electrostatic techniques.” Emma also discovered all the variety of positions in the FBI besides the agents. Since she loves photography, she especially enjoyed talking with a crime scene photographer. The whole program “was a wonderful experience for me to get a grasp on what it would be like to be in the FBI,” Emma explains, “and it’s really great for students considering going into that field.”

Proud to be a Don!!! Sean Doyle ‘80

I have been blessed to be a Don for almost forty years of my life. I attended the University of San Diego High School from 1976 – 1980. ( Oh, those were the years!) One of the greatest things I loved about Uni was the socio-economic diversity amongst the student body. We had students from all parts of the county. It was a wonderful experience. I returned in 1986 on a fluke as an assistant freshman football coach, and a few years later was hired as a teacher. It took some time to stop calling Ms. Chaillou, Mr. A, Mr. Steves, and more by their title name and begin using their first names. I have still never stopped calling Coach Serrano “Coach.” It has been an incredible journey getting to know the teachers and coaches that have mentored, tormented, and drove me to be the best person I can be. Seeing the faculty, staff, and administration from the “other” side really makes one appreciate how much each one of them really

wanted to see their students succeed. They really cared about who we were and what we wanted to achieve. They really did see Christ in all of us. That was never more apparent than this year when COVID-19 hit. Our teachers genuinely missed their students. When brain-storming for the seniors to come by and pick up their yearbooks and graduation gowns it turned into a drive-by. That drive-by turned into a parade with almost 400 seniors and families lining Del Mar Heights Road to drive through the parking lots hooting and hollering with faculty, staff, and admin celebrating their 3.75 years at Cathedral Catholic High School. Those feeling haven’t changed through the years, through the stresses of the outside world, the struggles of the Catholic church, and especially through the move to a new campus, and a name change. There has always been, and I believe always will be a special community about being a Don. What does that community mean? It is doing more than just asking people how they

are, but rather taking action when someone tells you they are not doing well. It is providing an overwhelming response when it comes to helping people in despair. When you can include faith in your everyday life, being a community becomes part of who you are. At the reunions we host on campus, we hear names from the past and present. From the past, James Cremins, Fr. Leo Lanphier, Cdr. Kulot, Hector Macis, Coach Serrano, and Barry McGrath to name a few. Tim Derenthal, Dan Geiger, Lauri Allari, John Montali, Doinna Harrison, from the not so distant past. Danny Wilson, Dave Thoennes, Margaret Mauro, Natalie Wilsterman, and Tom Steves all served a number of decades as Dons faculty. These amongst many others will always be remembered for their care, love (sometimes tough), and support in our growth to becoming adults. When I first began to coach, I had no idea what I was getting into. First, it was freshman football, then to JV, and finally to varsity. I coached baseball for a few years, track and field, freshman boys’ basketball, junior varsity, and varsity girls basketball. Heck, I even spent a season coaching lacrosse. I was blessed to be under the tutelage of Coach Hamamoto for ten years before he decided twenty-five years ago to move on. I was excited when I was named the head coach of the football program, coaching the program that I played in and running the program the legendary “Bull” Trometter had started years before is humbling and a privilege. In thirty-five years, I have never seen a more dedicated group of servant leaders that put an incredible amount of time and energy into their passion to make sure that every athlete has the opportunity to get the experience of a lifetime. That does not mean that every student-athlete plays the amount of time they want, goes to the next level as they had dreamed about for so many years, or even wins a championship. Goodness knows that playing for Coach Serrano was one of the hardest things in my high school life. But he also taught me lessons that prepared me for life and this is why he is one of my most supportive mentors. Things that are hard are not always bad. We learn great lessons from those times.

In my current job as the Director of Alumni and Advancement, I have seen the generosity of the alumni increase each year. It is awesome seeing the alumni come back each summer for reunions. We were sad not to celebrate reunions this past year, but look forward to planning super reunions with the classes ending in 0, 1, 5, and 6, once we are able. We encourage all alumni to stay in touch by going to the webpage, under ALUMNI and hit the “Stay in Touch” link. We want to make sure everyone knows about the reunions and other happenings at Cathedral Catholic, home of the Dons. It is truly one of my favorite times to see old friends rekindle their friendships, and talk about the old days and what they are doing now. I tell my current players that former players talk about games or plays like the game was last week. Though I think they are embellished more and more each year. What does our future hold? Only God truly knows. I do know that now is the time to get back involved. Although the current year is uncertain, one thing we know is that Dons can do hard things. Support the Dons Legacy with your time, treasure, and talent! In the current COVID-19 world we have a number of current Dons that could use your help immediately. Our need for financial assistance has increased dramatically with the onset of COVID-19. Please help in any way that you can. Every dollar you give goes directly to helping a student in need. Jim Weir ‘61 Jim was involved with the Jester’s Club, Dons Club, and Head Cheerleader in 1960 &1961. He is retired from California Community College Faculty (Electronic Engineering & Technology), Sierra College Faculty Association, California Community College Association, California Teachers Association, National Education Association, and Nevada County Supervisor District III. He is currently VP Engineering RST Engineering. They produce electronic devices (“avionics”) for light aircraft. He is also a Flight Instructor and Commercial Pilot (Airplane & Glider), Ground Instructor, Airframe & Engine Mechanic with Inspection Authorization from the FAA Administrator (Washington DC). He is married to Ms. Cynthia Cunningham Weir (OLP ’62) since February 2013 and resides in the small rural community of Grass Valley (60 miles north of Sacramento) with the dog (Katie), the cats (Mia and Callie) and the parakeets (Sky, Josie, and Babybird) on two acres of very tall evergreen trees and weeds.

Dennis Betcher ‘64 Celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in June, Dennis and Claire Janowicz (OLP Class of 1965) enjoy golfing, hiking, and fishing in their home state of Colorado, where they’ve resided since 1986. Their frequent travels to the Caribbean for snorkeling and fishing are currently on hold.

Bill Pollak ‘64 Major move for this Marine! After separating from the Marine Corps (1974) he and Patty remained in the El Toro/Irvine area. In May 2019 they moved to Hendersonville, NC. Fun Fact: Bill purchased his first surfboard from Mr. Chuck Williams, English teacher and swim coach, during his sophomore year. Since then he has owned one continuously, well until moving to North Carolina. Any Dons from that era nearby?

Commissioner by the Board of Supervisors. Mike and his wife Sherry have taken trips to Europe and Asia and continue to live in southeastern Los Angeles County. He continues to play soccer, run, golf, and garden. His wife Sherry had a 35-year career at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena. Their two daughters work in communications and marketing. Dave McAlindin ‘68 Dave and his wife Shelly are “homeless, unemployed, and enjoying every moment!” .With nearly 40 years in the economic development profession, Dan retired in late 2016 from Glendale, AZ. He and Shelly moved from Arizona back to the Boise area in Idaho in April of 2019 to be closer to the grandkids. In February 2020, the city of Goodyear, AZ asked Dave to assist them in their economic development efforts for four months, so back to Arizona they went. While in Arizona they sold their house in Idaho. It appears retirement life is treating them well.

Mike Bennett ‘69 Mike retired in 2016 after a 39-year career with the County of Orange where he worked as a field biologist and Deputy Agricultural Commissioner before being appointed as the Orange County Agricultural

Don Weir ‘69 Don earned his BA at the University of Hawai’i 1974, MA at San Diego State University, and Ed. D(?) University of Southern California. He returned to the UNI campus as a faculty member and football coach (at all three levels) from 1975 to 1977. He retired from the Grossmont Union High School District in 2006 and moved to Hawai’i. He worked for the University of Hawai’i and retired once again in 2012. He moved back to San Diego after living in Hawai’i for the past 16 years. He and his wife, Colleen purchased a house in Singing Hills Estates and have leased their house in Hawai’i to the New Zealand Consular Corps. They are currently living in East County with their two-family line chocolate labradors (Kaikua’ana, 4th generation), (Laule’a 5th generation).

1970’s Jim Murphy ‘72 Double retirement for Mr. Murphy. After 23 years in the U. S. Navy serving with the Naval Cryptologic & Intelligence personnel Jim retired from the U.S. Navy in 1995. His assignments and deployments took him all over the world to Guam, Spain, Japan, and S. Korea. In the United States, they called Hawaii, Virginia, and Massachusetts home. Jim has transited both Suez and Panama Canals. In 2013, he also retired as a Deputy Sheriff from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department after 18 years of service. Jim and his wife, Maria Angeles Murphy have been married for 40 years. They have one adult son, Andrew (37) who lives in New Jersey.

Cameron Crowe ‘73 He had a very successful run of the play Almost Famous at The Old Globe in La Jolla. The Dons community loved the UNI shout outs and reference to the student newspaper, El Cid! The Dons Alumni Association presented Mr. Crowe with a red U hat to show our appreciation.

Chris (Reilly) Pennington ‘81 Cycling has been her passion for the past 5 years in the beautiful PNW along with her husband, Bill, sister-in-law Becky, and brother, Tim (Class of ‘82). It is a great outlet and a fantastic way to stay in shape both mentally and physically, especially during these unprecedented times. She commutes to work by bike most days, as well as tours the beautiful areas on the weekends. We were registered for our third annual 200+ mile Seattle-to-Portland (STP) ride this year but like many events, it was canceled. 1990’s Tom Harkay ‘84 Tom and Edna (Eddy) have been married for 26 years and they have three grown boys, all in their 20’s. Tom has retired from corporate life as an IT Finance Manager in the energy industry. Earlier this year, he and Eddy founded Cerulean Bay (www. ceruleanbay.com), a tropical lifestyle brand which currently imports artisan-made artwork and home accessories from Fiji and other locations in the South Pacific and the tropics. They are actively supporting the local artisan communities in these geographically remote locations and are also beginning work on a casual wear fashion line for men and women, which will be manufactured in Fiji. They currently reside in Houston, TX. Andrew McMichael, ‘84 Dons on the move . . . After 17 years at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY, Andrew started as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at Auburn University in Montgomery, Alabama, in January 2019. Patrick McKinney II ‘90 Patrick was appointed to a judgeship in the Alameda County Superior Court in December of 2018. He served as general counsel at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from 2015 to 2018. Prior to that, he served at the California Office of the Attorney General from 2011 to 2015 and was an attorney at Farella, Braun + Martel LLP from 2001 to 2011. He earned his JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2001, and his BA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1994. Maria Thompson ‘11 She is an investigative journalist for an NBC affiliate in Las Vegas and the executive producer of a 30-minute documentary uncovering the abuses that occur inside Nevada’s youth facilities. Solin is a mobile fitness app that helps consumers discover the right video workouts from the best online fitness trainers/influencers. and also allows trainers to better engage with their fans and promote/monetize their brand more effectively. To date, they have partnered with some of the biggest trainers in the space and are finalizing a funding round. The beta version of the mobile application launched in December 2019 with an amazing response. They are looking to achieve their mission of making the world a healthier place by increasing the accessibility of exercise and fitness content to consumers. Ray Smith ‘15 Welcome back to the West Coast Ray! After graduating from Boston College, he was signed by the Detroit Lions, and then picked up by the San Francisco 49ers right before their playoff run to the Super Bowl. Hannah Gilliland ‘14 Due to Covid-19, Hannah Gilliland ‘14 ran the “Boston” Marathon in her neighborhood in Carmel Valley. Rick Kneeshaw ‘65 passed away on February 4, 2020, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Rick was a passionate Don, having participated in pep club, orators club, swim team, El Cid, choir, and as the football announcers for the Dons. Rick received a BS in Engineering Technology from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and a Masters in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego. After a 25-year career as an engineer, he returned to the Uni campus and taught math from 1997-2000. Rick was very instrumental in the design of Cathedral Catholic High School. Rick also served as School Board President and most recently as a proud member of the Class of 1965’s 50th reunion committee. Rick leaves behind his wife of 48 years, Lenora, daughter Kathy ‘92, son-in-law Tyler McIntosh and grandchildren Emma ‘21 and Andrew ‘24.
