From wheelchair to walking J.R. lifts her foot and places it on the low platform. Then moves it back to the floor.

Up, down. Up, down.

For someone who was in a wheelchair a few months ago, these small steps are actually giant strides.

J.R. has been a Christ Community Health patient since 2014. A series of strokes in 2017 left her confined to a wheelchair. Now, thanks to physical therapy at Christ Community, she’s walking with a cane.

Every Wednesday faculty and students from the Augusta University Physical Therapy (PT) Department are at Christ Community helping patients like J..R. regain their mobility.

Moving to the stationary bike, J..R. continues her workout with a look of determination on her face.

For many of our patients, the Christ Community PT Center is their only option for overcoming challenges and becoming active again.

Shelter for hurricane evacuees

Caring for those forced out of their homes Last fall we saw several evacuees from Florida and Texas whose homes were destroyed by the hurricanes.

Susie is one example. She came to us with an abscessed tooth and painful swelling. We pulled several infected teeth so she could be fitted for dentures.

The Christ Community Dental Clinic opened in January 2017. To say that the dental staff was busy in 2017 would be an understatement: 2017 Dental Clinic Stats: 4,177 visits 1,708 patients We can’t wait to see how God grows our dental ministry in 2018.

Since then, she brought her whole family to Christ Community. They are settling into a new normal here in Augusta.

Thanks to you, we’re able to provide complete medical and dental care for this family who lost everything in the storms.

Pharmacy services improve patient care Patients often tell us they don’t take the medicines we prescribed. When asked why, a common response is, “I can’t afford them.”

For many of our patients, their medicine is simply too expensive. When you have to choose between your prescriptions and food for your family, medication management drops down on the priority list.

Last summer Zach Ruege, Pharm D, was hired as our first staff pharmacist. Zach plays a vital role in helping our patients get the care they need. He provides input so our providers know how to help patients get their prescriptions at the best prices. Also, special partnerships with local pharmacies give patients the freedom to buy the life-saving medications they need.

“Every patient is different, with unique circumstances,” he said. “It’s important to look at the whole picture. I want to help our staff make informed decisions on the best drugs at the most affordable cost.”

Zach also meets with patients one-on-one for medication counseling and to help them get the maximum benefit from their prescriptions.

I started working at Christ Community Health in 2017. It’s been a wonderful experience in many ways.

Patients get quality care that addresses their physical and spiritual wellbeing. There are many stories I could share, but I want to tell you about a part of Christ Community that happens out of the limelight.

An unexpected discovery for me is that Christ Community is a wonderful teaching facility. I’ve been so moved by the staff’s passion to “go tell others” through teaching and training.

The administration and providers desire to reach young students as they try to find their footing and show them a different mindset and way of providing medical care. It’s not always convenient to make time in an already busy schedule for teaching students, but it’s a priority here.

Our providers have found a different type of treasure treating the underserved, and they work diligently to share it with others. The students experience a different approach to medical care as they rotate through Christ Community. Patients are involved in this teaching process and often share their spiritual insight. The students learn from patients in unexpected ways.

Recruiting staff and encouraging students is never just about filling a job, it’s about fulfilling a mission.
