Cultural Club Reports OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE By Gloria Reynon

KINRO KANSHA NO HI (LABOR THANKSGIVING DAY) In Japan & Okinawa, Labor Thanksgiving Day is observed on November 23 to honor workers, celebrate production & express gratitude. If it falls on a Sunday, the holiday is observed on Monday. In contrast, American Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, celebrating gratitude, prayer, feasting, football, family gatherings & parades. October 1: Bingo It was a fun & enjoyable Bingo game day with lots of prizes. Congratulations to our grand prize winner, Yoko Miyashiro. Ippe nifee deebiru to Jane Higa for generously donating the grand prize. October 8: Hawai’i Taiko Kai delivered an exciting day of taiko drumming & entertainment! ONC members Judy Di Bianco, Mae Asato, & John Awakuni showcased their outstanding talents. Mae Asato added a special touch by dancing to Hatoma, a heartwarming tribute to her mother-in-law. The grand finale was audience participation in the popular song “Let’s Sing Uchinaguchi,” bringing everyone together in a joyful celebration of Okinawan culture! October 15: Variety Show What a show! ONC members showcased their incredible talents in a lively variety of singing & dancing. Singers Evelyn Leroux, Jimmy Toma, Jean Murakami, & Richard Tada entertained the audience, with Diane Kawakami dancing solo & also accompanying Richard. A heartfelt highlight was Nada Sou Sou, beautifully danced by Julie Ann Tamayori, Lynne Howells, Hope Hironaga, & Gloria Reynon as a touching tribute to the late Sharon Isa. Jean Murakami narrated the song’s meaning in English, adding depth & emotion to this memorable performance. The finale included Jane Higa & Nobu Oshiro leading the audience in line dancing to “Beautiful Sunday”, Electric Slide & Chicken Dance. Yaeko Miyashiro requested “Let’s Sing Uchinaguchi” October 22: Nakama Taiko brought the house to life with powerful rhythms & handcrafted taiko drums! Each drum told a story, with barrels from Napa Valley, skins from Missouri, & iron from Tokyo. The dynamic repertoire featured Modori, created by Stanford engineering graduate David Wells; Bon Taiko, from Japan’s Sukeroku Taiko group; Bachi Hokobi, created by Kenny Endo & the founder of TCP; Renshu, created by Seiichi Tanaka, founder of San Francisco Taiko Dojo; & Amanojaku, created by Watanabe Sensei of the group Amanojaku. PJ Hirabayashi & her husband also made their mark as co-founders of San Jose Taiko. Audience got hands-on experience trying to play taiko drums. The celebration continued with everyone joining in Kachashi, including Frances Nakachi. Adding an unforgettable finale, Junji Tobaru traveled all the way from Japan to captivate the audience with his sanshin playing and singing. What a spectacular celebration of rhythm, culture,& community. Umaribi kariyushi yaibīn (Happy Birthday) to: Jeanette Akamine, John Awakuni, Nancy Gakiya, Janice Ige, Dessie Kiyabu, Gayle Mizukami, Doris Takara, Betty Tamanaha, & Dorene Toma. Whether labor or family, let us give thanks for what we have. Have a Happy Thanksgiving Day!

We practiced singing “Mau Dahn Fah “ over and over again in the courtyard lanai! Tommy Duvauchelle and Erline Waiau played the ukulele. President Mau praised the group for trying so hard. It was really good for their first time singing the whole song! Everyone is encouraged to come to the next three meetings to practice before we go on stage! We’ll have a smaller group this year because the Mau sisters will be going to Japan with Sonny Ching’s Halau and a number of others won’t be able to make this year’s Christmas party! Congratulations to this new group of officers! Wishing you a successful Year of the Ram! Chinese Cultural Club made a monetary donation to Pālolo Chinese Home for its 130th Anniversary!
