A MESSAGE FROM SUSIE Dear Lanakila Members, Friends and Family: With all the storm and hurricane activity these past 10 months, we really need to express our deepest appreciation to the volunteers and employees who helped take care of the senior center to protect our special “home”. Mahalo a nui loa to Walt Miyashiro, Ron Oshiro, Cris Sampaga Jr., Jimmy Toma, and other Lanakila members for volunteering to assist with custodial duties upon Lodi Tapawan’s retirement. Along with our staff Cookie Irvine, Iris Hiramoto, Riva Torno, and Catholic Charities Hawaii leadership; the staff of the State Department of Accounting and General Services; Ohana Environmental; R&C Roofing; Kapili Roofing; First Hawaiian Bank employees; Gonzalez Maintenance; Coverall; and front desk volunteers Diane Kawakami, Mary Sueda, Jean Sugihara, and Rose Yanagawa, the senior center was well prepared for the weather challenges! Cris Sampaga Jr. is now officially an on-call custodian for LMPSC working on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for a total of 14 hours a week. Congratulations, Cris! Arigato gozai masu to Carol and Jason Anzai, Marilyn Au, Maureen Chun, Sumie Consillio, Lynne Kobayashi, Marie Laroze Cervetti, Giselle Miyashiro, Ann Oshiro, Richard Shaw, Burt and Cyndi Sugiki, Michael and Violet Tokumura, Phil Uyehara, Randy Wong, and Colette Young for re-packaging the sand bags and cleaning our center drainage system on August 11th. They did an outstanding job resulting in an immaculately clean drainage system ready for Hurricane Lala! Muchos gracias to Teri June Amuro, Glenn Kodani, Marie Laroze Cervetti, Liz Lum, Joyce Nakamura, Marvi Shibuya, and Randy Sugai for assisting us with the quickly re-scheduled delivery of the 2,200 pounds of clothing, household goods, and book donations to Mo’ili’ili SAVERS on August 11th to avoid the heavy rain anticipated to hit the islands. The funds raised will support our upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. We would also like to thank Randy Wong for his efforts landscaping the front, back and side yards, planting powder puff dwarf plants, bromeliads, crown flower plants, different herbs, and more. Thanks to Eric Pilger and Claudia Kamiyama for planting bak choy, lettuce, and kai choy. Mahalo to Mountain View Farms employees for planting Manoa lettuce, eggplant, green onion, and more. Xie xie to Amy Bratt, Ferdinand Madriaga, Mae Hong, Atsuko Sakumoto, and Sue Yashima for regularly caring for our gardens as well! Happy Labor Day and Grandparents Day to you all! Johanna Lewis, Elliot Hood, Cooper Krigbaum, and Jackson Parke spent their vacation time in Hawaii helping Lanakila Senior Center do the ground work to make a great edible garden near the small kitchen and Staff Parking lot!!! Mahalo a nui loa!
Thank you to our awesome members for responding to a call for help in hours! They re-bagged sand bags to protect our senior center and cleaned out our drainage system to prepare for Hurricane Lala! Mahalo also to our awesome members who within hours delivered 2,200 pounds of clothing, household goods, and books from LMPSC to SAVERS Moiliili two days earlier than the scheduled delivery date to avoid the wind and rain!

Cultural Club Reports OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE By Gloria Reynon
OKINAWAN LONGEVITY CELEBRATIONS: BEIJU (88) & KAJIMAYA (97) Beiju (or tookachi) the 88th birthday, is special because the Japanese characters for 88th resemble the character for rice— symbolizing purity, goodness, abundance, & life’s blessings. Kajimaya the 97th birthday means “pinwheel” & symbolizes the fullcircle of life, returning to childhood joy & innocence. July 23: Ryukyukoku Matsuri Daiko Hawaii (RMD), founded in Okinawa in 1982, blends Eisa, karate, & contemporary music into a unique taiko performance. Melissa Ching & her husband John are both educators in the public sector, inspiring elementary thru college students. ONC members were captivated by the lively drumming, joined in dancing, tried playing the taiko drums, & eagerly lined up to feed the dragon. The performance concluded with everyone dancing Kachashi together. Dr Christie Nishita gerontologist at the UH Center on Aging, works to improve care and services for older adults, including those with dementia. She also cofounded the Kupuna Collective which helps build age-friendly communities throughout Hawai’i. Its research strengthens programs, supports funding, & expands our understanding of longevity, healthy aging, & the health challenges faced by disadvantaged populations. July 30: Tommy Amina (85 years old) has spent 30 years teaching Tai Chi. He practices Yang & Chen style of Tai Chi; focusing on fall prevention & balance— walking forward & backward; leaning against a wall & sitting down & standing up; breathing thru the diaphragm including Qi Gong breathing exercises; & focusing on hand movements. The highlight was a graceful performance by his students using colorful fans. He invited everyone to his FREE Friday classes at the United Methodist Harris Church - Advance at 6am & Beginners at 8am. Aug 6: Show & Sell by ONC The star of the event — the andagi! Once a year the Okinawa Nenchosha Club (ONC) sponsors the Show & Sell. Dedicated bakers come in the day before to prep the dry and wet ingredients. At 5am on event day, they mix the ingredients together & scoop balls of dough into the hot oil. Experienced bakers scoop with their hands while the others use ice cream scoopers. The crispy mouth-watering donuts are then brought into the Craft room to be packaged for sale. They sell out every year, with people still stopping by at closing hoping to get some. Founded in 1969, ONC is celebrating 57 years of service. Aug 13: Randi Nunes & Team Angels gave an uplifting spiritual performance, with the Team Angels women dancing hula to spiritual songs in Hawaiian & English. The highlight was when Randi sang Elvis Presley songs & Diana Kawaguchi got down to boogie with him! The performances centered on the Trinity—Father, Son, & Holy Spirit—bringing a message of peace, God’s love, & spiritual safety. Aug 20: Kajimaya & Beiju Celebration honored BettyTaira, 97, & Jane Fujii, 88. (Note: According to Okinawan tradition, a person is considered one year old at birth.) Phil Uyehara, ONC President led a parade with his sanshin followed by paranku drums & pinwheels. ONC members & Okinawan dance students Yaeko Miyahara, Nobuko Oshiro, Takako Goya, Chieko Tokuda, Dee Yamamoto, Kay Fukuhara, & Yasuko Miyazawa , under the direction of instructor Diana Kawaguchi, danced to Okinawan songs while Hope Hironaga danced to Bassho Fu. Highlighting the celebration was Richard Tada singing Mifai Yu accompanied by Diane Kawakami dancing. Doreen served as our wonderful MC, & James Toma gave the Okinawan toast ‘Karii’meaning good luck. Umaribi kariyushi yaibīn (Happy Birthday) to: Jane Fujii, Sally Kageyama, Joyce Kishimoto, Walter Miyashiro, Brigid Nakamura, Faye Rainey, Lester Stigar, Aileen Tanaka, Setsuko Uehara, Jane (Yuri) Uyehara, & Bernadine White.

Cultural Club Updates JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Clarice Kumura
SEPTEMBER IS HEALTHY AGING MONTH September is Healthy Aging Month to provide inspiration and practical ideas for adults, ages 45+ to improve their physical, mental, social and financial well-being. Here are some tips to get started on revitalizing yourself:
>Be positive in your conversation and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, check yourself right there and change the conversation to something positive, > Have negative friends who complain all of the time and constantly talk about how awful everything is? Drop them. Surround yourself with positive people of all ages and you will be happier too. >Walk like a vibrant person. Stand up straight. You will look great and feel better. >How’s your smile? People who smile more often are happier. Lonely? Pick up the phone to do the following: volunteer your time, take a class or invite someone to meet for lunch. Hey, it’s never too late to take control of your health! Sensei Lydia Morikawa brought her talented son, Ronin, who amazed everyone with his taiko drumming, dancing and even singing. On the 10th, we heard from Mr. Cory Lee and his assistant Sydney, who presented energy-saving ideas to all of us. On the 17th, Mellow Friends, under the direction of Alvin Sakihara, provided an hour of wonderful hits from the 40’s and 50’s as well as a few songs from the opera. Also, four of our members enjoyed their birthday on this day. Tanjoube Omedetou Gozaimasu to: Sin Cha Ko (90+); Bridgid Nakamura (90+); Joyce Kishimoto; Walter Miyashiro; Gail Ontai; Amy Sakagawa; Ayako Sasahara; Myunghee Sueno; and Bernadine White. Cultural Club Updates FILIPINO CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Beth Miguel It’s now the beginning of the “Ber month” nearing the ending of the year 2026. On behalf of the FCCH club headed by our hardworking President, Ms. Wilma Ibay and our advisor Mr. Rudy Ibay who is recovering, we pray for your speedy recovery sir. Foremost, we thank the Lord our borrowed life and protection as well as His heavenly blessings. The following dates were our weekly schedules at the FCCH club: 8-1-26- Presided the meeting doing the routine cuz our VP, Cora Orinion was absent and our President, Wilma Ibay came in late. Ms. Doris Maielua lead the prayer, followed by singing the national anthems, both American and Filipino. Then, practicing the dances to be performed at the 54th FCCH anniversary at Ala Moana Hotel by the 15th of the month then finally our President came in, entertained our visitor. Miss Hope Crecencia, with her sister together with Mr. Richard Villabar to observe our routine. Letty Dolor brought snacks for us, noodles, puto, and purple sweet rice honoring the VP’s birthday though she was not around. Thanks for the snacks. 8-3-26- We (Pres. Wilma, Beth, Dolor & Leonie) had a meeting with the Ala Moana Hotel Restaurant Director of Catering and Convention Services, Ms. Candace Fujioka, she helped with the table arrangement and the confirmation of guests count. It ended up with 13 tables + 1 extra table was reserved. 8-8-26- FCCH meeting- did the routine then parted ways. 8-12-26- Ms. Ibay delegated me to attend LMPSC Program Committee Meeting as her proxy from 8:30 to 10:00. Thanks for having me. They talked about the different upcoming events at the Center. 8-15-26- Finally it’s FCCH big event. The 54th anniversary of FCCH at Ala Moana Hotel for lunch. We had the following special people to thank: 1) Ms. Susie Chun Oakland-though she was not there, she’s a big part of it coz she is our over all Director of LMPSC. 2) Ms. Shirley Templo- State Representative 3) Ms. Rose Martinez- Our Emcee 4) Mr. Flor Martinez- A well known KNDI radio personality and now a general manager of Pactas- a balikbayan box sender to P.I. 5) To all our FCCH dancers performers choreographed by Ms. Tisha Kalua and Auring Sonson. And climaxing the program is the coronation of our FCCH Queen- Ms. Auring Tiburcio, followed by her royal court- the 4 princesses: Juanita Agustin- Mrs. Luzon, Racquel Ganti- Ms. Minadano, Angie Sera- Ms. Visayas, Alfreda Julian- Ms. Hawaii. And the outgoing queen who can’t attend, Ms. Ester Lansangan. Letty Dolor was her proxy. The food was good and we had a good program. I made the closure of the program and again I thank everybody who came and spare their special time with us. The normalities, the Toulac guests, the Sulian kids. This concludes the FCCH September report.

CHINESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Dorothy Mau Ni Hao Ma? How are you! Here’s hoping all of you stayed safe and you survived hurricane Lala. On the Big Island one person died and over 100 homes were damaged or lost by the strong winds. On Oahu Happy Days Restaurant, where we celebrated our birthday members recently, the roof caved in and some people there got injured. We are so grateful to be safe and appreciated for the robocall from our Program Director Susie Chun Oakland who left messages for our safety, Our show and sell was successful and was able to make a donation to the center. Thank you to the workers Blossom, Beverly and Dorothy Mau even though the Treasurer cancelled. Xie xie also to Erline Waiau and Arlene Gray who gave monetary donations. thank you to our happy customers, too! In August we had only the first Friday meeting. The third Friday was Statehood Day and we had a holiday. We will meet again the first and third Fridays of each month. We always enjoy Tommy Duvauchelle when he plays the piano. He played Mau Darn Fa The Peony song as he and I sang it. I will be teaching this song at everyone of our meetings so please come and join us, member and friends! We will be ready to serenade at our annual Christmas party. Our secretary and advisor have been very busy rehearsing for their halau‘s Hoolau Kanaka at Moanalua Gardens .
