“BEIJU” (88 Years Old) & “KAJIMAYA (97 Years Old) CELEBRATION
A person’s 88th birthday celebration in Okinawa known as “Beiju” or sometimes called “Tookachi” is a significant event. The name “beiju” is special because the Japanese characters for the number 88, when written together, resemble the character for rice which is considered a symbol for purity & goodness “Kajimaya”, literally means “pinwheel”, is a significant Okinawan tradition that celebrates individuals who reach the age of 97. It is believed that upon reaching the age of 97, a person returns to being youthful, thus “pinwheel” symbolizes the return to childhood. Beiju” & “Kajimaya” are important celebrations with family & many people gathering for a joyous occasion These events are a way to honor the elder’s health, wisdom & long life.
July 24: Informational event with SMP (Senior Medical Patrol), Norma Kop, who talked about being aware of the Medicare Program, & tips to avoid Medicare scams & other scams $60 billion dollars are lost due to Medicare scams Scammers find us through Social Media, phone calls, & unsolicited door-to-door contact & offers of in-home visits from providers you don’t know. Without Medicare, older adults would be a greater risk of living in poverty with undiagnosed health conditions, lowering the quality of life in our community Treat your Medicare card like “Platinum Gold” We must protect Medicare for our children, thus we must PREVENT, DETECT & REPORT health care fraud, errors & abuse. REMEMBER “YOU’RE IN CHARGE” of the safety of your well-being!
July 29th: Entertainment by Hooge Ryu Hana Nuuzi no Kai Nakasone Dance Academy with MC, Lisa Nakandakari Sensei This academy was founded by the late grandmaster Lynne Yoshiko Nakasone, whose legacy of Okinawan dance in Hawaii, lives through her students, as they strive to continue perpetuating the Okinawan culture. The late Yoshiko & Clarence Nakasone enjoyed being members of our club Thus, today’s performances, is presented to us with great appreciation for our kindness shown to them. It was a great morning of Okinawan dances by the group. We even did a fun sitting, stretch exercise with participation from the audience. Everyone was happy & impressed with all their talents, August Events: August 7th: No club meeting due to our annual Show & Sell, andagi sale, which was a huge success We sold all of our 800+ “onolicious” freshly cooked andagis! If you didn’t get to eat one, you missed out! Thank you for all your support, & don’t miss out on our next year’s annual andagi sale! .August 14th: No meeting, due to the National celebration of Social Security’s 90th birthday event, which was opened to all LMPSC members with AARP Hawaii. .August 21st: ONC Clubs Beiju/Kajimaya event with our MC Dorene Toma. This was a very special day starting with a parade, led by Phil Uyehara, playing his sanshin, followed by the “Kajimaya” recipients, President Jane Higa, Doris Doughty, Mary Muraoka, Doris Takara, & then the “Beiju” recipients of Dorene Ichikawa, Yoshiko Kaneshiro & Nancy Yeda. They were led to the stage where a birthday cake awaited them. This festive procession also included the beating of the plate & taiko drums. It was very impressive to see at their age, how youthful & full of vigor they still are This was followed by wonderful entertainment by our members to honor these “special” people Okinawan dancing by our Okinawan dance class & Phil Uyehara. Beautiful singing of Richard Tada to “Mifai Yu” (expressing gratitude & thanks), accompanied by Diane Kawakami’s graceful dancing. What a beautiful way to end this special morning. Umaribi-kariyushi yaibiin-(Happy Birthday) to: Jane Fujii, Sally Kageyama, Joyce Kishimoto, Walter Miyashiro, Brigid Nakamura, Faye Rainey, Lester Stigar, Myunghee Sueno, Aileen Tanaka, Setsuko Uehara, Jane Uyehara & Bernadine White.

KEIRO NO HI- Respect for the Aged in Japan
Did you know there is a day people express their thanks and respect to their elders in Japan? They call it “Keiro No Hi” which translates as “Respect for the Aged Day” The origin of respect for the Aged Day traces back in Hyogo Prefecture in Japan In 1947, after World War II, a small town called Nomatanimura (now Yachiyocho) decreed that the l5th of September should become Toshiyori No Hi (Day for the Elderly). The day has since been changed to the third Monday of September. In Japan people give gifts to their grandparents to express their gratitude or have dinner with family members wishing them a long and fruitful life. Similarly, here in Hawaii, we celebrate Grandparents Day on the Sunday after Labor Day to show Love and Respect. We also acknowledge contributions Grandparents made in terms of education and the well-being of the young people within the family. Happy Grandparents Day!
September Events: 1 – Labor Day- Holiday
8 – Grandparents Day (Project Dana Dancers)
15 – Birthday/Victor’s Kapakahi Group
22 – Aloha Festival Hawaiian/Japanese program – TeMoana’s NaWahine Hula Lanakila
29 – Music Lover’s Group
August Events Recap – On Aug. 4, the Hawaii Shin Kobukai got everyone on their feet and danced bon odori style to such song as Shima No Blues Roland Morikawa held everyone’s attention as he drummed throughout the dances. On Aug. 11, the Newtown Strummers, a group of eight performers, played ukulele and sang to songs such as Paniolo /country, Ain’t She Sweet, Nada Sou Sou and many more. On Aug. 18, the Jukebox Singers led by Douglas Oshiro, gave us a lively performance with a variety of songs sung by the versatile performers. Members enjoyed dancing (or huffed and puffed) to the Twist and YMCA.
