Dear Lanakila Members, Family and Friends:
On August 30, 2025, 165 First Hawaiian Bank employees and their family members, 20 Lanakila members, and the leadership of Catholic Charities Hawaii came together at LMPSC and volunteered to paint the entire external building walls of the senior center, landscaped the senior center grounds, donated 5 carloads of beautiful and useful items to the Lanakila Thrift Shop, and redid all the broken sand bags that control the water flow during heavy rains to keep the senior center property safe from flooding Everyone did a super job and worked very hard Special thanks to FHB leaders Alan Arizumi, Vernon Wong, Mike Taylor, Ruben Tan, Courtney Kajikawa, and Jason Haruki for leading the work groups. The members, volunteers and staff of Lanakila Senior Center express our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your outstanding effort! Mahalo a nui loa for providing the water, breakfast refreshment, and delicious bento for the 200 volunteers that day! A partner company of FHB, Kapili Roofing, also donated their expertise to take down the rotted gutter system from the senior center and are in the process of installing a new gutter system! Thank you to owner, Brennan Leong, for this wonderful and generous in-kind donation of services! We would also like to say thank you to Steven Ai, owner of City Mill, and Diana Baba for donating the painting equipment and supplies; the Department of Accounting and General Services for donating the paint; and Starbucks for donating the delicious hot coffee! A shout out to Catholic Charities Hawaii leaders Tina Andrade, Be-Jay Kodama, Stella Wong, and Diane Terada for being there the whole day too. It was a very amazing and wonderful day of giving!
Thank you to Lana Lorenzo from Hawaii Baptist Academy Elementary School for the beautiful vase of pens made into flowers created by their school children. This was such a thoughtful, loving, and unexpected gift.
We hope you enjoy this newsletter. We could not capture all the uplifting, fun, and educational experiences this past month, but the photos in the newsletter capture some of the sparkle in the lives of Lanakila Seniors, along with many center member and community partner volunteers!
We are just extremely thankful for everything people do with kindness and good hearts. Our deepest and sincere gratitude for the aloha you continue to embrace us with May the bounty and kindness of this season be with you and your loved ones always Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Veteran’s Day to you!
Me ke aloha pumehana,
Lanakila Senior Center Staff ~

The most important event happening in Okinawa on October 12th is the Naha Great Tug-of-War Festival This event is recognized in the Guinness World record as the largest of its kind a massive, 200-meter long (about two-thirds the length of the Empire State bldg.), 43tonne (95.000 pounds) rope. This event has roots dating back to the 17th century & is an important part of Okinawan heritage. It’s considered an “Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan”, & believed participating in this tug brings good luck, health, & a prosperous year ahead This event is an inter-nationally loved festivals for its vibrant energy, strong mutual spirit, & feeling of togetherness .August 28th: The Naleo Nahe Nahe Ona Kupuna group entertained us with various Japanese, Hawaiian songs & beautiful hula dances We learned that their beloved Kumu Hula Rosmarie Dungca, had recently passed away Her presence will be missed, as every year she would lead her group to entertain us. One could feel the sadness & emotions in their faces as they danced “The Prayer”, as beloved thoughts of their Kumu Dungca, was happy & proudly watching over them, as they carried on her legacy, September Events: September 4th: Singing entertainment by the Palolo Hongwanji Karaoke group, including our own ONC member & photographer, Carolyn Kimura, who surprised us with her melodic voice! This group consisted of 2 men & 5 women, who wooed us with their talents & enthusiasm in their singing Vocalist, Susan sang the heartfelt, song “Nada Sou Sou”, accompanied by Diane Kawakami’s touching expressive hula Following was a moving, heartbreaking duet of Larry & Carolyn, singing “Love is over”, as they departed in the end! Rodney Morita, the group leader, left us with a wonderful saying “Everyone be happy & give one another a HUG! After our morning entertainment, Shari Tamashiro, representing the Hawaii United Okinawan Association, escorted NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), announcer Toyoda Haruno with a photographer & another member to interview President, Jane Higa. This was in conjunction with the many festivities of the 125 years of Okinawan immigration to Hawai. Keiki should never go out alone
Stay in a group or with an adult
Set up a route and curfew
Never go into a stranger’s home

ALOHA!! There is no direct Hawaiian translation for “Happy Columbus Day” because the holiday is not celebrated in Hawaii. Instead, it is known as Discover’s Day People celebrate Columbus Day to commemorate the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas, marking the beginning of continuous European contact with United States.
Happy Halloween in Hawaiian you say “hauoli la Helui.” La Helui is Halloween in Hawaiian.
Show and Sell- “Ho ike a ku ai aku” October 8th 8am – 10:30 am.
As we continue to grow and prosper, ALOHA!!! E malama pono! A hui hou kakou!

How awesome it was to lunch with such a diverse group. Besides chomping on their indescribably delicious cheese biscuits, we ordered a finger licking lobster wrestling match. Come join us at Fort St. Mall’s Edegame or Giovanni’s Ward Whse. At Edegames- food is prepped while you watch and for $2 00 you pick with tongs, and choose items!
