Sunday, June 21 is Father’s Day. In Okinawa, June is a month of love, awareness, & spirituality - a time to honor fathers, grandfathers, & father figures; embrace diversity; cherish family; & reflect with gratitude
April 30: Paranku Club of Hawai'i captivated the audience with lively Okinawan eisa dances accompanied by the rhythmic beat of paranku hand drums. Originally introduced to Okinawa by Buddhist monks in the 16th century, eisa began as part of Obon traditions honoring ancestors & evolved into joyful folk performances. The group is dedicated to preserving & sharing the Okinawan cultural art of paranku-style drumming thru hands-on workshops & performances for community groups throughout Hawai‘i A highlight of the program was Renee Morioka's heartfelt harmonica rendition of Bashō Fu The program concluded with audience participation in spirited Okinawan dances
May 7: Tamagusuku Ryu Senjukai Frances Nakachi Ryubu Dojo, the Okinawan Dance Academy, graced the stage with beautiful dances honoring all mothers in celebration of Mother’s Day. It opened with the auspicious dance Kagiyadifu, wishes for longevity, happiness, & prosperity. Followed by Bashin Tui, using golden fans to evoke the image of an eagle soaring over the Yaeyama Islandssymbol of strength, hope, & good fortune. Frances Nakachi Kuba Sensei performed Higasa Odori, a dance created in 1934 by Seigi Tamagusuku, founder of Tamagusuku Ryu. Her elegant performance portrayed a young maiden surrounded by flowers beneath a parasol The finale was Kachashi
May 14: The Variety Show showcased ONC members’ talents through themes of love, honor, nostalgia, & cultural pride Ron Oshiro performed sign language to “You’re The Best Thing ” Mina Imamura, Evelyn Leroux, & Puna sang “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” Flora Nakasone sang “Ulizuna No Kolo” (Sound of the Sea), honoring the beauty & cultural bonds of Okinawa. Yaeko Miyahura, Takako Goya, Kay Fukuhara, Dee Yamamoto, Chieko Tokuda & Nobuko Oshiro danced to “Touora Ju Ongo” (Song of the Beautiful Island), expressing the beauty & spirit of Okinawa Carol Toyama sang “Yaima,” celebrating the cultural & musical heritage of the Yaeyama Islands Mona Bernado & Lynne Howells danced to “Papalina LahiLahi” (Dainty Cheeks), a traditional Hawaiian song expressing deep love & admiration Sumiko Nakasone sang “Nada Sou Sou ” Hope Hironaga danced to “Ashibina” (Playground or Garden), a lively celebratory dance where people & even the crab gather to party Jimmy Toma sang “Uminchi No Kaze,” (The Wind of the Uminchi or Algae) about the traditional fishermen’s lifestyle. Diane Kawakami danced hula to “Tinsagu Nu Hana” (The Balsam Flowers), a traditional Okinawan children’s song to honor the wisdom of our ancestors & parents. The finale featured Jane Higa leading ONC members dancing to“Shimanchu Nu Takara” (Treasure of the Island People), the priceless treasures of culture that can’t be learned from textbooks
May 21: LMPSC Memorial Day Service for members who have passed Umaribi kariyushi yaibīn (Happy Birthday) to: Monica (Mona) Bernardo, Erna Cabral, Elouise K (Puna) Frank, Hermina (Mina) Imamura, Yoshiko Kumura, Rogelio (Archie) Lardizabal, Jean Murakami, Teresa Sasaki, Mildred Suzuki, June Tokuda, Franklin (Frank) Toma, & Yoneko Tsuchiyama.
