Cultural Club Reports OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE By Diana Kawaguchi
THE ISLAND OF THREE NEW YEARS! January is Okinawa’s ultimate triple New Years. The Islands blend modern Japanese traditions with ancient Ryukyu lunar customs and a unique “afterlife” festival. The First New Year (Jan.1): starts off the year with Hatsumode (first shrine visit) at Naminoue Shrine, and by eating Okinawa Soba (pork-based noodles) instead of Japan’s buckwheat version. The Second New Year Lunar): Known as Soguwachi, will have traditional family feasts centered on the lunar calendar. The Third New Year (Jurukunichi), which will fall on the 16th day of the first lunar month, will celebrate the “New Year of the Ancestors”. Families will gather at their ancestor’s tombs for food, drink and festivities with their ancestors. December Events: .December 4th: Entertainment by Moilili Community Center with Faye Murata, whose group is called “Niko Niko, Genki Taiso” (“Smiley Happy Health Exercises”), presented us with their Christmas program incorporated with group participation exercises. They ended their program with “12 days of Christmas”, where our members were asked to participate. It was fun to watch them, flash their props, when their gifts were mentioned. It was a fun morning. Before the Paranku Club of Hawaii entertained us, we honored Jane Higa, who has dedicated herself to our Okinawa Nenchosha club, as our President for almost 20 years, and a member for over 31 years! Jane spoke saying “her Dad always said why Okinawan people live long, “Uchinanchu kokoro wa Churasan”. (Okinawan people’s heart are beautiful!) Jane said everyone who come here can live to be 100! She can attest to this, as Jane is 96 years young! Susie, our Program Director presented Jane with a beautiful “Light in the bottle” to symbolize Jane, “lights up our lives”! Daughter, Junko said “her mom dedicated her life to our club, and was always working on club things at home!” The club presented her with leis, and a gift certificate, in appreciation for her dedication. There was a surprise visit from her son-in-law, Raynor Ikehara, who is the new assistant chief of Police, who came to congratulate her on her last day as President. He commented “whomever takes over, big shoes to fill”! Jane will continue as an auditor, and advisor for our club. Phil Uyehara will be our new President, effective 2026. Richard Tada who was been a member for 18 years+, was first elected as an auditor, then eventually worked as our audio technician with Frank Toma, He was eventually elected as our VP, but has decided to step down, replaced by Lynne Howells. This will be my last newsletter as your secretary. It has been an honor and pleasure writing the ONC newsletters for the past 2 years. I now pass the writing responsibilities over to Gloria Reynon. Congratulations and best wishes to our newly elected 2026 officers! Decmber11th: Paranku Club of Hawaii with a very lively MC, Renee Morioka. In the year 2026, they will be celebrating their 50th anniversary. Since majority of the ladies in their club are getting older they had to revise some of their movements, as they can no longer bend or squat down. They had a diverse program of Paranku playing, hula, & group participation to “Ashibina”. In appreciation to the Nenchosha club for inviting them, they dedicated their last number, “Mifai Yu”, which expresses heartful thanks! Ended with everyone dancing “Kachashi”. As our last day, members happily took home a bento! Umaribi-kariyushi yaibiin (Happy Birthday) to: Suzuko Demola, Doris Doughty, Takako Goya, Lance Hironaga, Harry Nakasone, Sumiko Nakasone, and Karen Takeshita, ONC will resume on Thursday, January 15, 2026. Cultural Club Updates JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Clarice Kumura
SHINNEN OMEDETOU GOZAIMASU Let us ring in the New Year with love, joy and happiness. We look forward to continued camaraderie among JCC members throughout the upcoming year. We welcome new members and fresh ideas at our Monday gatherings. Last year ended with a bang with our annual LMPSC Christmas party on Dec. 12 at the Ala Moana Hotel. JCC’s participation in the talent arena was a Tanko Bushi Bon Dance led by Sharon Isa. There was full audience participation. Awesome! Our annual JCC New Year’s celebration will be on Monday, Feb. 9. Bento tickets go on sale beginning Monday, Jan. 12. To start the New Year, our opening event will be the Zendaiko group on Jan. 12. On Jan. 26, we will be entertained by Woody and Friends Karaoke group. Jan. 19 is the Martin Luther King Holiday. December Recap: On December 1, the very talented Orange Express singers led by Wayne Uejo entertained us by singing classic oldies. Songs such as “Tennessee Waltz”, “Under the Boardwalk”, “Portrait of My Love” and many more were songs that bought nostalgic memories. On Dec. 8, JCC members (Jean Murakami, Ann Takaki, Mildred Suzuki, Sumiko Nakasone, Richard Tada, Dorene Toma and Jimmy Toma) and Elsie Ishiki and Ed Hasegawa from Marion Arakaki’s Enka class sang their hearts out to close out the end of the year. Happy Birthday Wishes go out to: Doris Doughty (90+); Akiko Baba; Darlene Ikegami; Marion Masuda; Mary Nakamoto; and Sumiko Nakasone. May you all have many more Happy Birthdays!!

Cultural Club Updates FILIPINO CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Beth Miguel As the year 2025 ends, we hope that all off the sadness we’ve encountered will perish as we welcome the year 2026 with cheer, gladness, hope and peace. May it be a more prosperous year for everybody.
Hello and welcome to the new active members and elected officers of FCCH. Thanksgiving we celebrated on 11/22/25. I was told it was a successful event sharing everybody’s potluck then a little program. I was sad that I was away joining the land tour to Taipei, Hongkong and China for 16 days. I was told by Ms. Oakland to share a story/picture of that trip. It was an educational trip seeing how the countries prospered. They have tall buildins and beautiful spots. If interested, try to attend the Travel Club at Lanakila header by Ms. Teresa Sasaki every 1st Monday of the month. Upon my return at Lanakila on 12/6/25, we had a meeting for the upcoming events, picture taking and enjoyed snacks from our club. On 12/12/25, the different ethic clubs at LMPSC attended the Xmas party at Ala Moana Hotel for lunch. FCCH performed a dance using the festive Filipino attire showing distinction from other clubs. Thanks to all the State dignitaries who also attended especially Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke, etc. We also had the oath taking for all of the newly elected officers in each club.
On 12/30/25, our club had a Xmas and birthday party celebration for all of the FCCH members born in December. We enjoyed and shared everybody’s potluck. Special thanks to Ms. Iris Hiramoto who’s always smiling when asked for help to the club’s necessities. Mabuhay!

We thank everyone for this community & Hawaii Senior Center, a place of warmth, friendship, learning and laughter. At this time of year we reflect the may blessings we share. We give thanks for the joy of companionship which helps us to feel young at heart and connected to one another. The spirit of service shown by our dedicated staff and volunteers and members who contribute their talents so selflessly, the richness of our diverse cultures and traditions, Christianity and Hawaiiana, and more that makes LMPSC a welcoming place for all. We will be celebrating HCC’s Xmas party at Pizza Hut Liliha. Officers will be looking forward to the Leadership Training on January 9th!
