Dear Lanakila Members, Friends and Family:
There was a lot that happened at the end of December 2025 at LMPSC and I did not have a chance to properly thank everyone who helped throughout 2025. To our LMPSC members; Cultural Club Officers; Class Instructors, Assistant Instructors, Assistants; Front Desk Volunteers; Kitchen Helpers; Gardeners; Sound System Tech Team; Special Event Committee; set up and clean up volunteers; event sponsors; educational workshop presenters; excursion partners; student volunteers; Re-Employability volunteers; center beautification volunteers; business and non-profit partners; City, State, and federal government partners; inkind and cash donors; and the staff at Lanakila Senior Center and Catholic Charities Hawaii … your tremendous support enhanced the quality of life for our 2,000+ members and the broader community and supported them to play, learn and serve our community every day. On behalf of Riva, Iris, Cookie, Lodi, and myself, we thank you for caring and sharing your ideas, talents, and resources with Lanakila Senior Center!

OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE
By Diana Kawaguchi
February 17 marks the first day of the 2026 Lunar New Year, known in Okinawa as Sōgwachi. This is the Year of the Fire Horse: adventure, vitality, & transformation. Some traditional foods symbolizing health & prosperity include rafute (braised pork belly), nakamijiru (pork chitterling soup), sata andagi (Okinawan doughnuts), & mozuku (seaweed) Eating Toshikoshi soba on New Year’s Eve is believed to “cut ties” with last year’s bad luck. Ryukyuan beliefs center on family & honoring ancestors, reflecting a deep respect for life & community.
January 15-First Meeting of 2026:
Our first meeting of 2026 opened with Diana Kawaguchi dancing to the classical song “Kajidefu” (the only Okinawan song historically performed at Edo Castle since 1710). Phil Uyehara, President of ONC, followed by singing “Aha Bushi” , playing the sanshin, an instrument central to Okinawan social life Jane Higa led Mona Bernardo, Lynne Howells, Gloria Reynon, Jane Uyehara, Nancy Gakiya, Jane Fujii & Janet Ito in a dance to “Shima no Blues” (tribute to the Amami Oshima Island). Flora Nakasone sang “Yaima” (a beautiful island).Naomi Badamo, Takako Goya, Yoshiko Kumura, Yaeko Miyahira, Nobuko Oshiro & Chieko Tokuda danced to “Niji Ni Mau”, a Rainbow Song reflecting hope & beauty Diane Kawakami danced “Kanayo” , a song expressing affection & romantic devotion. Richard Tada ended the program singing “Mifwai Yu”, a song honoring our parents with Diane Kawakami accompanying him with a graceful Okinawan dance. The finale was a performance with members & officers rejoicing in dance to “Shimanchu Nu Takara”, meaning Treasure of the Islanders January 22-Elsie Kawamoto’s Karaoke Group: This senior karaoke group delivered a heartfelt performance celebrating APPRECIATION for life, nature, & community. Elsie began by inviting the ONC officers to sing “Bashōfu”, named after the traditional banana-fiber cloth The song honors Asaji Kunjan, reflecting pride in Okinawa’s natural beauty & cultural heritage. The group followed with a vibrant mix of Japanese, Korean & American songs, performed with warmth & spirit. They closed by gifting ONC members a cute Comfort Owl to help ease pain, handmade by Elsie’s daughter. It was a touching finale & truly a day of appreciation Umaribi kariyushi yaibīn (Happy Birthday) to: Nancy Akamichi, Dorine Ichikawa, Harriet Isa, Janet Ito, Yoshiko Kaneshiro, Betty Kotani, Evelyn Leroux, Yoko Miyashiro, Mary Muraoka, Sandra Sayoko Nagamine, Flora Nakasone, Julie Ann Tamayori, Vicky Tong & Arlene (Dee) Yamamoto
