Dear Lanakila Members, Family and Friends
Summer classes have begun and the music, laughter, and happy sounds are heard throughout the senior center Mahalo to all our cultural club officers, volunteer instructors, assistant instructors, and assistants for your valuable time and talent.
We express our thanks to Lanakila members who lovingly prepared holiday cards for over 800 Navy men and women for this Christmas as requested by Jane Ferreira from the Navy League of Honolulu Thank you to the Happy Senior Serenaders, Young Forever Tappers, Steptaculars, and Ron Reddick for entertaining us at the 4th of July Barbecue; to the Special Event Committee for doing such a fantastic job barbecuing the hot dogs and teriyaki hamburgers for over 140 members; two LMPSC members for donating funds for chips; and the Elks Lodge of Honolulu for providing sliced watermelon and American flags for this festive occasion! We also thank Hawaii Pacific Health for the fun and educational Living Healthy event and their most generous donation of delicious, healthy lunches and a bag of fresh produce for every senior who attended. Mahalo a nui loa to Lyon Aboretum for providing great nature walks for us in Manoa, the CCH van drivers and LMPSC Member Hiroshi Kato for providing lovely tours of the North Shore and delicious lunch experiences at Crouching Lion Inn There were about 200 members who participated in 15 excursions to the North Shore! The excursions to Sheraton Hotel, Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Daniel K. Akaka State Veterans Home, Live Well by Kahala Nui, Highway Inn, and more were truly enjoyable
The African-American, Chinese, Filipino, Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Okinawa Nenchosha Clubs have diligently planned fun and educational programs and continue to celebrate birthdays for their club members We thank the club officers and volunteers for doing such a terrific job!
We are glad to hear that the educational presentations and workshops in-person and online have been informative and useful. The gift of time and knowledge by so many community partners and Lanakila members is truly appreciated! Troy Villar from Cybergenerations who teaches cyber safety and artificial intelligence classes; Kupuna Aikido who taught Safe Falling; Kamehameha School teachers who taught Hawaiian Language and Instruments and assisted with new raised gardens and beautification efforts; Jacob Callangan, Stuart Holloway, Hiromi Kawasaki, James Li, and Joan Matsukawa for teaching our seniors how to use their technology; Franklin Chung and staff from the City’s Real Property Tax Office who talked about the Homeowners Tax Credit program; Violet Horvath from the University of Hawaii who spoke about Stroke Prevention; Calvin Hara who talked about 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease and Music and its connection with wellness; Cheri Teranishi from Rehabilitation Hospital of the Pacific who is doing a Pelvic Health Series; Brooke Maruyama from the UH Nutrition Center who is doing a Nutrition series; LMPSC Volunteer Michelle Lee who has been doing a Drawing and Painting Series; Art Kimura and Steven Kaneshiro who has been teaching Gateball at Ala Moana Park every Wednesdays to our members, and Hwa Yong who provides free hair cuts to members every Monday afternoon are just phenomenal and so appreciated!
In the month of August, we will be having our Annual Membership Donation Drive and letters will be given or sent to our members asking for kokua small or large to support our senior center. Thank you for your kind consideration.
The summer months have been hot with intermittent showers and trade winds. Please continue to drink lots of water and keep hydrated. We are just extremely thankful for everything people do with kindness and good hearts Our deepest and sincere mahalo a nui loa for the aloha you continue to embrace the senior center and its members with

This is the theme for this year’s Hawaii United Okinawan Association, which reflects a commitment to a hopeful future & to strengthen the Okinawan community bonds. This year celebrates the 125th Anniversary of Okinawan Immigration to Hawaii. Hawaii is home to the largest Okinawan community outside of Okinawa itself. The Okinawan Festival will be held on Saturday/August 30th , & Sunday the 31st , at the Hawaii Convention Center, which celebrates the rich heritage of traditions, & the enduring spirit of the Uchinanchu (Okinawan) people This event is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to experience the unique sights, sounds, tastes of Okinawa & of course Andagi! Come & enjoy a fun Labor Day weekend at this year’s Okinawan Festival
June 26th: Featured Thomas Amina & his Taichi group who started their performance demonstrating their 8 stretching movements, by breathing through their diaphragm From these 8 basic movements, 16 different movements are developed Movements are done to music, as the music talks to them to remember what next movement to do. These Taichi movements are easy to watch but difficult to do. Taichi is a great way to stay mentally & physically fit.
JULY EVENTS:
.July 3rd: Members had a fun day playing Bingo many ways They were regular Bingo, 4 corners Bingo, Double Bingo, X Bingo, & finally Black out Bingo Those that were lucky, got fun prizes Everyone enjoyed themselves hoping they would be lucky that day!
July 10th: Bon Dance with Norman Kaneshiro, sensei from Nomura Ryu Ongaku Kyo Kai Hawaii, who played uta-sanshin (singing & playing sanshin), which added some authenticity to our Bon dance practice We were joined by other members from the LMPSC, who enjoyed the music, learning some Bon dance, & the feeling of camaraderie. According to Norman sensei, “Bon tradition is a time & chance to dance with your ancestors”. It was a fun day of freestyle dancing, ending with Kachashi with everyone. After this event, everyone enjoyed some chi chi dango (mochi)
.July 17th: The first half of our ONC was energetic performances by Ryukyu Koku Matsuri Daiko of Hawaii with Melissa Ching & her group of enthusiastic Taiko players, ranging from 9 years old & up You could feel the beating of the Taiko drums, like the thumping of one’s own heart A fun morning full of energy, vibrancy & enthusiasm Their performance ended with the appearance of their yellow Shishimai (Okinawan Lion Dance), who danced among the members, who followed to put money into its mouth. This is a form of offering, a token of gratitude to show respect for the tradition & the spiritual significance of the dance. The money collected helps support the performers & their groups, allowing them to continue this cultural tradition
The 2nd half of this morning was a mini variety show by our talented ONC members We heard wonderful Japanese singing by Mildred Suzuki & Jean Murakami Saw a lively Okinawan dance by Hope Hironaga, dancing with her Yotsudake (Okinawan castanets), & beautiful hula dancing by Lynne Howell & Sumiko Nakasone These members graced the stage with their awesome performances Umaribi-kariyushi yaibii-n (Happy Birthday to: Kay Fukuhara, Diane Kawakami, Lillian (Yoshiko) Minami, Rumiko Nagamine, Nobuko Oshiro, Sharon Shiraki, Richard Tada, Edith Tomei & Sunny Tominaga.

ALOHA!!! August 15th , Friday, is Statehood Day. Hawaii Statehood can be translated as “Moku‘aina o Hawaii.” On August 21, 1958 Hawaii became a 50th state.
The feelings of native Hawaiians are complex and varied. Some native Hawaiians express feelings of loss and cultural erosion. Kamehameha Highway is one of the main highways serving suburban and rural Oahu. In Hawaiian language, Kamehameha is interpreted as :The lonely one” or “the one set pal ” The first three routes H-1, H-2, and H-3 (approved in 1960.) Likelike could mean “alike, similar or equal.”
As a club we continue to grow and grow ALOHA!!! E malama pono! A hui hou kakou!

Recently there was an article that featured a very good friend of mine in the Hawaii Pickleball Magazine. We both live in salt lake, attend St Philomena Church and are members of Lanakila
This amazing woman, Ethel Tagawa, was featured in the Hawaii Pickleball Magazine She started Pickleball at Lanakila
Note there are two errors in the article. She is 92. Her birthday is later this year.
