Dear Lanakila Members, Family and Friends: We hope you enjoy reading about the many activities that Lanakila Senior Center members are involved with this summer so far! We look forward to seeing you at the Fourth of July Barbecue at LMPSC on July 3rd, the start of many classes this Summer Session, and interesting and fun educational presentations and excursions planned for this month.

Cultural Club Reports OKINAWA NENCHOSHA CLUB UPDATE By Diana Kawaguchi
SICHIGWACHI or SEVENTH MONTH July, the 7th month of the lunar calendar is known as the “Ghost” month, a time when ghosts & spirits, including those of deceased ancestors come out. During this time, some may visit the graves of their parents, or other ancestors, leave flowers & pray to them, to honor & remember them. Obon festival in Okinawa is July 13-15th, where the ancestors are believed to gather with their living relatives. During this time, there is Eisa drum dancing that ends the Obon season, sending the ancestors away with respect & blessings. May 29th: Karaoke singing with Elsie Kawamoto & her group, with their theme, “Hats off to Lanakila Day”. The singers wore various types of hats to coincide with their songs, as they sang with gusto! Entertainment ended wishing all the members a wonderful day! JUNE EVENTS: .June 5th: Variety show by our talented ONC members. Starting the program was Phil Uyehara with his sanshin playing. We heard wonderful singing of Japanese songs from Flora Nakasone, Jimmy Toma, Joyce Kishimoto & Dorene Toma, who also was a fabulous MC. We saw graceful hula dancing from Mona Bernado & Lynn Howells. Entertaining Okinawan folk dances from Suzuko Demola, Kay Fukuhara, Takako Goya, Yoshiko Kumura, Yaeko Miyahira, Sharon Shiraki & Chieko Tokuda. Diane Kawakami also danced a lively Okinawan dance. This entertaining morning concluded with Richard Tada, singing “Mi Fai Yu”, (Thank you). Before our Father’s day celebration program, our ONC members who are Fathers were honored with a purple beaded lei. We had a special guest from the head of the dance school, Ryusei Honryu in Okinawa, Kiyoko (Kazue) Higa sensei. Jane Higa presented her with a lei, and the students of Ryusei Honryu Ryuko Kai, presented her with a haku lei. .June 12th: Father’s Day Celebration with Tevita Apina & Amy Katsumoto who wooed us with their melodious voices singing various Japanese, Okinawan, American & Hawaiian songs. These songs showcased how talented Tevita & Amy are, which captured the audiences. After their program ended, Jane Higa led all the members to “Shimanju Nu Takara”. We ended dancing Kachashi. All the members got to take home their special Father’s day bento & Andagi! .June 19th: Fun Day with members grouped in 4 teams of 9 members each. They played fun games of Bean bag tic-tac-toe, Bean bag toss & Golf putting. The winning teams received prizes of Cup noodles, Crest toothpaste & Kleenex! Everyone enjoyed & had fun. Umaribi-kariyushi yaibii-n (Happy Birthday) to: Jane S. Hjga, Vivian Ige, Jean Ishihara, Fujiki Shimabukuro, Mary Sueda, James (Jimmy) Toma & Stacy Uyehara. Wishing everyone a very happy 4th of July, also known as Independence Day!

Cultural Club Updates JAPANESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Clarice Kumura
OBON Obon is one of the most important Japanese traditions which is celebrated around July 15. People believe that their ancestors’ spirits come back to their homes to be reunited with their family during Obon. For this reason, it is an important family gathering time, as many people return to their hometowns to pray together with the extended family for their ancestors’ spirits to return. Another tradition observed is a folk dance called bon odori typically held in parks, gardens, shrines or temples, wearing yukata (summer kimono) where dancers perform around a yagura stage. Anyone can participate in bon odori, so don’t be shy and join the circle of dancers at the various bon odori events. JULY EVENTS: 07 - Summer Fun Games 14 -- Ikebana 21-- Paradise Tanoshii Odori 28— Yui Buyo JUNE ACTIVITIES - On June 2, Woody and Friends graced our stage with their beautiful singing of songs such as Sake To Bara, by Sanae, The Prayer, by Clarence Kane, Furusato No Shiki Wo Utau, by Keiko, Bashofu, by Sharon, and Sayonara Wo Mou Ichido, by Woody. On June 9, we had a great time playing BINGO and lots of prizes for winners. On June 16, we celebrated Father’s Day and June Birthday celebrants. Of course, Happy Senior Serenaders lead by Rosie Ramiro played their ukulele and sang songs such as Nada Sou Sou, Kawaipunahele, Princess Pupule, and many others. Graceful hula dancers Mona, Sin Cha, and Erline danced to Hawaiian Lullaby and E Huli Makou.

Cultural Club Updates FILIPINO CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Wilma Ibay
The weather is inevitable. Sometimes it rains, sometimes it's windy and sometimes the weather is so warm. It is still summer. Looking back last month's activities:
May 31 - A visitor from the Philippines, DIVINEL BURIGSAY DELA CUESTA TALAMPAS came to join the Filipino Club Activities and was amazed our Seniors can dance well.She even dance with them. June 1 - Some Filipino Club members performed at a Graduation and birthday party of JAIZLYN AGUSTIN SARIBAY grand daughter of JUANITA AGUSTIN, a FCCH member at NATSUNAYA TEA HOUSE June 8 - Birthday Party of CARMEN BAUTISTA at their beautiful in Aiea. Enjoyed lots of food even took home some. Also picked green mangoes from her backyard. FILIPINO CLUB members will perform for the SOCIAL SECURITY BIRTHDAY celebration on August 14 at the Lanai of LMPSC.
Some members will perform at SOLOTSOLOT PARTY c/o Aurie Sonson our dance instructor on August 30, 2025 at Golden Coin Restaurant in Waipahu. CHINESE CULTURAL CLUB UPDATE By Dorothy Mau
Member Calvin Hara asked to be our speaker on Alzheimer’s Disease. He was well prepared and made flyers on the 10 healthy Habits for our members in both English and Chinese languages. Everyone enjoyed his talk! Soon after our meeting advocate Calvin left to catch his plane for the Alzheimer’s Association’s conference in Washington, D.C. A few days after , the Mau Ohana flew to Las Vegas for their Daughters of the Nile Supreme Session. If you want to learn more about Alzheimer’s, please check the July white folder and sign up. In July, some Chinese people celebrate the Double Sevens Festival . Since the Han Dynasty they celebrate the 7th day of the 7th Lunar month for this festival. Sometimes it is called the Magpie Festival or Chinese Valentines Day. In the Romantic folklore, the weaver daughter, of the Jade Emperor in heaven, fell in love with the cowherd on earth. Their love was forbidden by the Emperor who ordered the magpies to build a milky way to divide and separate the two lovers. Their love was so strong, the magpies formed a bridge across the milky way allowing the weaver girl and the cowherd to meet once a year on the Double Sevens Festival! Gifts for Chinese Valentines Day are jade pendants, fans, bracelet ,hair pins, combs, face powder or silk handkerchiefs. Here’s Wishing you all a Happy Chinese Valentines Day !
