PSA CHAMPIONS

OLIVER MORAN / CAPTAIN OF SWIMMING

Although Christ Church was the favourite for the season, an unusual calendar provided many setbacks to the boys’ preparation. A big disappointment was the loss of the House Swimming Carnival, as well as other Friday evening swim meets, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Thanks to Mr Anthony Lynch, Mr Luke Farmer and the Physical Education Department, two replacement carnivals were organised in the School pool. The first was for individual swimmers to race off and determine age group champions, and the second was for every boy in the School to swim in a relay.

With the possibility that there wouldn’t even be a PSA carnival this year, the boys found it hard to put in the vigorous training hours. Big thanks to coaches Mr Bill Kirby and Mr Travis Nederpelt who kept the boys accountable so that the team would be as strong as possible.

When it came to the night of the PSA competition, all the reserves had to step up and motivate the boys as there were no cheer squads or spectators. The swimmers from other schools also made their presence felt by chanting songs. But once the carnival started, it only took one event for them to go silent as Matthew Lamb (Year 12) smashed the Open 100m free in a time of 53.39. This set the tone for the rest of the night and Christ Church’s lead just grew larger and larger. The result saw CCGS winning by 210 points to neighbouring school Scotch.

Special mentions go to the younger boys, Charlie Spencer (Year 7), Jackson Anderson and Sam Hicks (Year 8) who combined broke six PSA records on the night. Also, in the older age groups, Thomas Michael (Year 11) and Matthew Lamb (Year 12) broke some tough school records.

2021 MITRE

Aquatics: Water Polo

LUKE MCMANUS / CAPTAIN OF WATER POLO

Starting this season with only four of the 14 players from last year, Captain Luke McManus and Vice-Captain Gus Sheldrick set achievable goals for the boys. We aimed to strive for the Dickinson Shield but, more importantly, to focus on building a champion team for the years to come. We started the season with the traditional, consecutive weeks of long hours of hard training, focusing on all areas of the game.

At the beginning of the season, we certainly didn’t play as well as we might have, with a tie against Trinity and close defeats to both Wesley and Scotch. With Mr Scott Chrystal as our new coach, and the boys eager for a win, the team was confident that the following term would prove victorious. Rightfully so, as the First Water Polo team excelled and managed to beat every team except Aquinas.

Notable matches included our win against Guildford 52-2 and our final match of the season against our rivals Scotch, with the young boys’ performance highlighting the true potential in the sport.

The Seconds and Thirds continued to dominate with impressive, undefeated seasons, displaying a masterclass of skill and culture in and out of the pool. Water polo is in good stead for the years to come with the middle school boys showing their commitment and fitness by attending a two-week training camp run by our Firsts’ coaches.

A special thanks goes to coaches Mr Alex Gunnel and Mr Scott Chrystal, and to our manager Mr Andrew Jefferies for their time and effort over the season. I wish CCGS Water Polo the best of luck in the years to come.

Athletics

TIM CHANEY / TEACHER IN CHARGE OF ATHLETICS

The CCGS Athletics Team continued to improve on previous performances, securing a fourth-place finish and achieving a score of 1429.5 points – the highest ever recorded. This result came on the back of many excellent achievements from students in all age groups.

The attitude and effort of students was outstanding, with many achieving personal best results at the PSA carnival. The team was well-led by Captain of Athletics Parker Robinson, along with a strong Year 12 cohort who gave much to CCGS Athletics during their time at the School.

There were many terrific performances, highlighted by age group results:

UNDER 13

Harrison Pazin ran second in Division 2 1500m and 800m and Rhys Oxley won Division 1 1500m in a School record time of 4:35.39, also placing second in Division 1 800m. Matthew Teh took out the Division 1 Triple Jump and Angus Read competed strongly in his sprinting and jumping events.

UNDER 14

Samuel Hicks had four top-three places and Samuel Brampton had two, both in middle distance events. William Kempson scored 41 individual points with top-three finishes in Long Jump, Triple Jump, 400m and the 4x400m Relay. Jackson Anderson had another great meet, finishing first in the 400m and Division 2 Long Jump, and third in the 200m and 4x100m Relay.

UNDER 15

Thomas Grylls ran a blistering 400m to finish first in his race. Kalani Chong Sue returned from injury to finish first in Division 2 100m and 200m, and also ran in the 4x100m team that finished third. Massey Doolan and Jonah Hanikeri were responsible for two of the best performances of the day. Massey broke the PSA record in the 200m in a time of 23.22 seconds, a School record in the 400m in a time of 52.92 seconds as well as a first-place finish in the 100m. Jonah also broke the PSA record in the 1500m event in a time of 4:13.68. He was also first in the 800m. UNDER 16

Orlando Keleman, Travis King and Matthew Tan all performed strongly, and Austin van der Struyf had three top-two finishes in Division 1 events. Dylan Calderwood scored 53 individual points, finishing second in Division 1 High Jump, 100m, 200m and the 4x100m team. Joshua Neervoort continued his School record-breaking streak, winning the 1500m in a time of 4:16.15.

UNDER 17

Nicholas Hill and Joe Harwood dominated the High Jump, finishing second and third respectively. Joe was also second in the Long Jump while Oliver Austin scored the most points for CCGS in his age-group.

OPEN

Henry Davis ran the 1500m and the 3000m and finished in the top three in both. Kai Wylie finished in second place in both the Shot Put and Discus and was a member of the 4x100m team that finished third. Team Captain Parker Robinson ran his final race in CCGS colours in outstanding fashion, finishing first in the Division 1 400m in a time of 51.03 seconds.

Having only ever finished higher than fourth place on two occasions in the 1990s, CCGS Athletics now has its sights set firmly on a top-three finish. Thank you to the Physical Education and Sport Department staff for their assistance in preparation and coaching.

Badminton

ADITYA MUTHUKATTU / CAPTAIN OF BADMINTON

This year looked promising, with fresh blood coming in from the younger year groups. Many schools were deceived by the young players, but their talent and determination shattered their opponents. The experience of the older boys came in handy in the deciding matches, often collecting gamechanging wins to secure the victory. Overall, the friendly but competitive nature of the Firsts was unparalleled and that led us to play at our best.

Seconds this year was also very strong, remaining undefeated for most of the season. It was great to see many First and Second players challenge for the top spot, showing that the team was filled with skill and determination.

The future looks bright for CCGS Badminton, with many strong and talented members from Years 7 to 10. They will form a strong foundation and turn this into success in the coming years.

The knowledge and experience of coaches Mr Daniel Fan and Mr Nick Kidd helped us unlock our inner badminton skills and trained us to be strong fighters on the court. Many thanks to them for their hard work and dedication to the team.

Basketball

JOSH LAMB / CAPTAIN OF BASKETBALL

The Christ Church Basketball started in Term 4 of 2020, with the First team participating in gruelling pre-season drills. We all packed into the hot Basketball gym and trained our hearts out.

We began the season convincingly, with a massive win against Hale, after being down eight points at half time. Some standout performances from that game include Harper Gadsby (Year 12) and Vaughn Robson (Year 11). For the rest of the season, the boys fought hard but were only able to secure two wins against Guilford Grammar, to finish the season with three wins and 11 losses.

Basketball at Christ Church has the largest number of participants in the school and continues to grow each year. The future looks bright, as there are teams like the 9As and 8As that only lost a handful of games in the season, with standout performances from the likes of Jakob Akhlil (Year 9) and Luke Dorsett (Year 9).

We thank our coaches, Mr Brad Armstrong and Mr Mike Ellis for their efforts and support throughout the season.

Cricket

PAUL BOYATZIS / CAPTAIN OF CRICKET

After a solid hit out in three scratch matches over the summer holidays, the First XI squad was ready to commence Term 1 of the Darlot Cup. The boys began training for their first game against a strong Trinity team.

Trinity posed a total of 280. Jack Cooper (Year 11) got the boys off to a quick-fire start with the bat but Trinity’s total with a strong bowling line-up proved too much.

The following week we played Guildford. Special mention again goes to Jack Cooper for making 40 runs and Lincoln Hobbs (Year 9) who made 69, taking the boys to a very competitive total of 240. Rhys Solomons (Year 11) led the charge with the ball, taking five wickets for the match including an extremely rare hat-trick.

Our game against Aquinas was one we will never forget, bowling them out for 178 runs. The run chase was initially slow, with the side being five wickets down for 34 runs. However, Adam Solomons (Year 9) and Seville Cooper (Year 10) got the boys home, scoring 52 and 64 respectively. Adam batted for a long period in 38-degree heat and hit a boundary in the last over to win the match.

This year we have seen a rise of numbers in cricket, showing promising signs for the future. The Seconds won just over half of their games and the Thirds won two games. The 8As won one game, with a shout-out to Lachlan Yoong who performed consistently for the team. The 7As and 9As were undefeated for the term.

On behalf of all cricket teams, I would like to thank the coaching staff, in particular Mr Graeme Wood, for their hard work and dedication throughout the season.

Cross Country

HENRY DAVIS / CAPTAIN OF CROSS COUNTRY

The Senior Cross Country team had a tremendous season. With ruthless intensity on race days and an undeniable dedication to hard work, the team finished a close second to Aquinas by a slim margin of just two points.

The season began with a nervous win over Hale, as runners conquered the mighty ‘Chunder Hill’, followed by comfortable triumphs over Guildford, Scotch, Wesley and Trinity. The team’s largest obstacle was three-time reigning champions Aquinas, who hadn’t lost a race in three years. Despite a brave effort, Christ Church didn’t manage to upset the favourites, but not all hope was lost.

The intense and chaotic All Schools phase approached, a new experience for many boys as they faced the challenge of running amongst hundreds of people. The initial race of 2 x 3km saw Christ Church earn second place, just 12 points behind Aquinas. This was followed by a disappointing display at Aquinas for the 3km Relay, which saw our premiership chances slipping away.

On a Thursday afternoon, a 3km Guildford fixture loomed as an excellent opportunity for an All Schools win – and win we did! A tremendous effort saw Christ Church upset Aquinas and shock the rest of the competition, thus ending their winning streak. We belted out a deserved Linga.

In the final two fixtures, the boys crushed Aquinas by winning the 5km at Mount Claremont, and the famous Ray Brown 8km event, by 91 and 94 points respectively.

The junior team, led by coach Mrs Paula Frost and Captain Oscar Koh (Year 8), had some impressive Friday runs, with many backing up on a Saturday morning to assist the senior team.

The Cross Country team should be extremely proud of their efforts and success. Special thanks to coaches Mr Jacob Marai, old boy Jes Bromley and parent Dr Koh for their mentoring of all runners.

Football

ANGUS SHELDRICK / CAPTAIN OF FOOTBALL

Christ Church Football in 2021 had many ups and downs, however, the enjoyment and the promising signs for the future cannot be denied.

The Year 7s began their footy campaign in style, showing great skill and determination while being coached by Mr Liam Casson. The Year 8 cohort struggled, with injuries to star players affecting its season. The Year 9s had yet another victorious season, coached by Mr Jarrod Kayler-Thompson. The boys continued their outstanding form into the year, being guided by the composure of Max Hansen and ruthlessness of Thomas Grylls. The Year 10s were put under pressure on many occasions, as many of their star players were called to play with the First XVIII. A special mention goes to Austin van der Struyf (Year 10) who played the whole season in the First team.

First XVIII Football

Senior football at Christ Church did not go as anticipated, but there were still many highlights. The Thirds, captained by Charlie ‘Daniher’ Rodwell (Year 12), found it hard to come away with many wins; nevertheless, their spirit and fierce attack was exemplary. The Seconds fought hard all year and finished with some notable wins. The Firsts’ year did not go the way many of us expected, however, our final year of school football was still memorable. The team came close to many wins, leading for the majority of games against teams such as Scotch, Hale and Wesley, but struggling to close. Thank you to coaches Mr Antoni Grover, Mr Sam Wallace and Mr Rob Wiley.

Hockey

RIPLEY COOPER / CAPTAIN OF HOCKEY

Christ Church Hockey teams performed well throughout the season. Following the disappointment of last year and the loss of the majority of the First team, we looked to rebuild our previously strong hockey culture by incorporating youth.

Despite some tough losses and disappointing last-minute errors, the Firsts came out with a respectable record, winning key games against Wesley and Guildford – two strong First teams looking to claim the 2021 title. We won seven games and lost just four, an improvement and step forward to the goal of overall success. Standout performances by Fletcher Wetherell (Year 11) and Ethan Yem (Year 10) were supported by strong performances from all players, including seasoned veterans and debutants.

The juniors had strong performances across all age groups. The Year 7s worked well together in their first season against hard opposition. In particular, the Year 8s competed very well and improved while the Year 9s are well-prepared to compete in 2022.

I would like to particularly thank all coaches and staff for their support and effort this year – Mr Will Byas, Mr Brendon Noble and Mr Daniel Timms. We look forward to watching Christ Church Hockey grow and develop to reclaim the trophy in the future.

Rowing

THEO KLEPEC / CAPTAIN OF ROWING

How about those 9Es! They were a bottom-of-the-pack crew, but on the day of Head of the River, they truly outdid themselves by winning their race.

This set the shed up to have our best performance of the season, coming third in the Hamer Cup. Our previous best placing was fifth. The other Year 9 crews had some of their best results with the 9As narrowly beating Trinity, a school that’s renowned for their strength in their younger squads. The Year 10As achieved a strong second place; no doubt they will strengthen the senior squad in the seasons to come.

This season had many highs and very few lows. One of these highs was Grant Hogarth breaking the 2012 Year 11 2000m ergometer record by three seconds.

The senior squad had mixed results, but on Head of the River day, the Fourth VIII achieved a third placing, and the Third VIII and Second VIII a fourth, making these the best results for the season. Nobody can be unhappy with ‘giving it your best’. In the First VIII race, Scotch did not disappoint and got the early lead. Past performances indicated that they were due to ‘fly and die’, but unfortunately this did not happen. There was disappointment for the First VIII crew who had their best row of the season, but simply came second to a better crew.

The First VIII was one of the youngest crews in CCGS history, with five Year 11s in the squad. This, as well as impressive results from younger members, means the shed is in good hands for seasons to come.

Rugby

MONTE MCGRATH / co-CAPTAINs OF RUGBY

The 2021 summer sports had just wrapped up and the boys were eager for the rugby pre-season to start. With a few weeks of training and a camp under our belts, we jumped into our first game against Hale. Unfortunately, with many players injured, we suffered a heavy defeat going down 43-7. It wasn’t until the third game against Aquinas that we really came together. Mr Tom Jerram asked us to earn the opposition’s respect and we certainly did, claiming our first win of the season in a physical clash.

Coming off a loss against Scotch the following week, positions were then rotated. Kai Wylie (Year 12), moved from the back to a leading forward role at eight, was able to wreak havoc. This worked as he was an unreadable loose forward with a knack for the try line. With these changes the boys started to gel, leading to convincing wins against Wesley and Guildford.

We then headed into the second half of the season filled with confidence. Unfortunately, we came up short once again, losing to Hale 28-14. However, the team showed a much-improved performance from the first Hale game.

The highlight of the season came in Round 10 when we came up against the top-of-the-table and eventual Brother Redmond Cup winners, Trinity. The boys exemplified what it means to play rugby for CCGS, playing with speed, flair and working as a team in a back-and-forth game. With one minute to go, Vaughn Robson (Year 11) stepped up for a potential gamewinning kick. With ice in his veins, Vaughn nailed the kick, and the game was won 29-28. The team rounded out the season with narrow losses to Aquinas and Scotch, and large wins to Wesley and Guilford, finishing the season in fourth position.

Although we didn’t win the cup this year, the season was a highly enjoyable one filled with great memories. The future is looking bright for rugby at CCGS, with many Year 11s and Year 10s involved in the Firsts squad this year.

Special mention must go to Year 10s Dylan Calderwood and Hugo Fischer for making appearances in the First XV, as well as Luke O’Callaghan for his impressive season as a starting Year 10.

Sailing

SAM ROSE / CAPTAIN OF SAILING

Throughout 2021, Christ Church Sailing saw great success among all year levels, with a special mention to the Teams Racing Squad.

Under coaching from old boy Liam Forrester and Mr Arvi Pocock, the Gold and Blue teams trained through Term 1 for the State championships in the April school holidays. After a close second place in the qualifying series, Christ Church Gold brought it back in the semi-finals and took home the title in convincing finals against Scotch College. It was an amazing result for the boys, winning the WA Schools Teams Racing Championship for the first time since 2014.

The Gold team consisted of skippers James Ferguson (Year 10), and Year 12s Sam Rose and Harley Waterstrom-Walker, as well as Year 9 crew members Alasdair Cameron, Angus Cameron, and James Renouf. An honourable mention also goes to the Christ Church Blue team, which consisted of skippers Hugh Kilpatrick (Year 12), Alex Molyneux (Year 9) and Ted Woo (Year 12), as well as crew members Issac Biczo (Year 8), Oli Hasluck (Year 9), Benjamin Keen (Year 11) and Max Pearse (Year 9). CCGS Blue finished in fifth place, just missing out on the top four group for finals.

With these outstanding performances and some racing improvements among the recreational sailors, Christ Church Sailing is on a path to further success with many young, up and coming sailors learning fast and getting prepared for the years ahead. A special thanks goes to Mr Forrester and Mr Pocock who made our success possible.

Soccer

JAMES RUSS AND RYAN VERLEY / CO-CAPTAINS OF SOCCER

The 2021 season saw the return of another thriving CCGS Soccer fraternity, as St John’s Wood Playing Fields hosted over 200 boys in preparation for their winter campaign. Led by the First XI, soccer has always been characterised by a free-flowing, expressive style, and an emphasis on sportsmanship and cohesion against adversity.

Under the guidance of Mr Mark Lee and assistant coaches Mr Todd Harnwell and Mr Liam Reddy, the First squad had a largely positive season. The team finished with a winning record and memorable victories in the derby at Scotch, as well as fixtures against the reigning champions Hale. The year saw many returning stars assert their brilliance, as well as the emergence of promising talents in Years 9 and 10 who were integrated into the squad. The boys established a manner of playing that was, at times, breathtaking to watch and unstoppable to play against.

The Second XI’s league-winning performances were further testament to their depth of passion and technical ability. The new recruits in Year 7 showed plenty of promise in an almost unbeaten season, with coach Mr Robbie Gaspar mentoring them through their first year in the PSA. The Year 8 to 10 teams shared mixed results, but it was clear that the season played host to an impressive evolution of the teams’ abilities and mindset.

Irrespective of results, the season was a great success. It was an honour to lead the sport and we’d like to express our gratitude towards all coaches and staff across the year groups who contributed to this season.

Surfing

PSA Champions

TOM FOX / CAPTAIN OF SURFING

Aspiring Christ Church surfers and bodyboarders began the season with trial events, with successful surfers and bodyboarders selected to represent the School in the PSA championship and WA School Surfing Titles.

Max Yeo (Year 10) won the Junior Bodyboarding trials, followed by Lennox Badger (Year 10), Sam Harding (Year 9) and Billy Ure (Year 10). The Junior Surfing trials were taken out by Jake Yeo (Year 10), followed by Leon Butler (Year 9), Henry Hogan (Year 9) and Tom Wittenoom (Year 9). The senior surfers had a scrappy affair in knee-high closeouts, with Dawson Greig (Year 11) winning the day, followed by Jensen Kirby (Year 11) in second, Tom Fox (Year 12) in third and Kieran Bucktin (Year 12) in fourth. Senior Bodyboarding was a battle of the barrels in small choppy conditions, with Ben Walker (Year 11) beating Dan Pocock (Year 11), Charlie Rodwell (Year 12), Ryan Thomas (Year 12) and Benji Brockman (Year 12).

In the mid-term break of Term 2, the boys met at Scarborough Beach for the PSA championship. Two fast banks on either side of the spectators’ tent and glassy conditions saw the boys in blue and gold win the first division of the day, the Senior Surfing, in an emphatic victory over the competitive Scotch. The conditions became wind-affected over the rest of the day, but the CCGS tube pigs in Junior and Senior Bodyboarding put on a show, taking out their divisions as well. In the final heats of the day, our junior surfers pulled through in choppy wedges to produce a historic victory, leaving the team lifting the PSA shield for the second year in a row.

July holidays saw an in-form team stepping onto our home turf at Scarborough for the WA Schools Surfing Titles. An initially disappointing bank improved during the day, seeing both teams of senior surfers bowing out before the final in a valiant effort against strong teams from Carine and JTC. The senior bodyboarders wouldn’t suffer this same fate, with Ben Walker and Dan Pocock victorious in their division. Junior bodyboarders competed in a legendary Christ Church versus Christ Church final that saw the team of Max Yeo and Lennox Badger win out, while Jake Yeo caught a three to the beach, wave of the day to seal victory for him and Leon Butler in the Junior Surfing. The Christ Church boys then lifted their second trophy of the year, winning the competition.

RORY VON ALTENSTADT / CAPTAIN OF TENNIS

Having consecutively won the past six Corr Cup competitions, the First VIII Tennis team had much to live up to, especially considering the loss of many standout players from the previous season. Despite this, the team was eager to obtain yet another win under the illustrious guidance of PSA tennis legend, Mr Rob Kilderry.

The squad was still looking strong, with the Year 11 duo of James Newton (Year 11) and Samuel English (Year 11) proving to be dominant in the top two positions and young gun Archie Brown (Year 9) displaying the bright future of Christ Church Tennis. The team managed an impressive record, losing only two fixtures, and including a 12-12 thriller in which the boys won by a count of games.

Despite failing to defend our title as PSA champions, the boys placed an admirable second overall and remain in a good position to have another attempt next year. The Second VIII proved our depth within PSA Tennis, finishing with a perfect 10-0 record for the season and starring Best Player recipient Lachlan Hill (Year 12).

Further evidence of Christ Church’s impressive future came from the junior sides.
