FORECAST? Regardless of the season, you’re likely to hear the question regularly here on the Cape. Some of you have asked what’s in the forecast for the Center, what are the plans for the future? It’s no secret that we have been bursting at the seams with our programming and educational programs. Each year as we move through our theatrical productions, gallery exhibits, classes and workshops, concerts and special events, I am always thinking one, two, five and ten years into the future. I know we need more space and we are always exploring options that will allow us to offer more classes, rehearse productions in a more effective way, engage more of our community in the rich cultural programming we have been delivering over the last several years. We have received incredible support from our patrons in funding a new roof, new lighting, parking lot improvements and most important of all, helping to spread the word about our varied and robust programming and educational outreach.

Like our local weather forecasters, I don’t know specifically what tomorrow will bring, but I know we will continue to grow and make improvements in our campus and in all areas of programs. We will continue to depend on our community - to increase our membership, our audiences, our patrons, our volunteers, our teachers, our actors and directors, our musicians and poets. The weather is unpredictable, so I will never be far from my fundraising umbrella to help keep us safe and dry, and to remind everyone of all the important ways we fund what we do. We don’t have a need. Our community has a need – the need of a rich cultural life. We are here to fulfill that need – and I thank you for being here and for supporting us.

2014 THEATER SEASON

Mainstage BLACK COMEDY by Peter Shaffer February 6-23 A one-act farce in which a desperate sculptor hopes to impress his fiancée’s father by “borrowing” a few antiques, but best laid plans go up in smoke after a fuse blows in his apartment. Once his apartment is in darkness, only we, the audience, can see what is happening. What follows is a frantic romp with unexpected visitors, mistaken identities, and surprises lurking in every dark corner! The result, as you might expect, is chaotic, disastrous – and very funny!

MOby dick: the musical

by Greg Hischak April 10-20

book by Robert Longden music and lyrics by Longden and Hereward Kaye June 5-29

This 2011 play by local playwright and poet Gregory Hischak is a historical fantasy that reimagines the lives of the two Wright brothers and their quest to build a heavierthan-air flying machine.

“Hischak has created poetic dialogue that crackles with wit... It’s a fresh, intriguing look at what might have been and what never was.”

–Portland Press Herald

“A dazzling comic ballet.”

– New York Daily News

Thar she blows! This cheeky cult hit from London retells Herman Mellville’s epic tale as an all-girls school musical production. A mixture of high camp, music hall-style smut, and wild anachronism overflowing with double entendres.

The hilarious and heartbreaking story of Big Edie and Little Edie Bouvier Beale, the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, once bright names on the social register who became East Hampton’s most notorious recluses.

“Here’s that shot in the arm for theater lovers who’ve been longing for something bold, haunting and hypnotic to get lost in… GREY GARDENS is more than a unique and unmissable musical: It’s a gift.”

– Rolling Stone

This 2009 Tony Awardwinning play simultaneously examines the creative process behind Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations and the journey of a musicologist as she struggles with ALS disease and her relationship with her daughter. An extraordinary American play about passion, parenthood, and the moments of beauty that can transform a life.

“It’s a compellingly original and thoroughly watchable play for today that deserves to remembered.”

–Talkin’ Broadway

The timeless story. The classic characters. The unforgettable songs. The popular comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world’s best-loved musicals. Join Annie on her spirited journey from a next-tonothing start at an orphanage run by the wickedly funny Miss Hannigan to finding her ideal family with big-hearted billionaire Daddy Warbucks.

“An intensely likable musical!... It has a rare kind of gutsy charm.”

Jay toured with The Greatest Show on Earth off and on for many years, performed in The Three Stooges, Live! in Las Vegas, and taught both at Ringling Clown College and for the New York Goofs. He’s performed in Japan with the Kinoshita Circus, formed his own clown troupe, The Seaside Clowns, and has traveled to China to perform in several International Clown Festivals. Jay clowns regularly with his wife, Kristin (also a clown) and their two children, Karen and Nicholas. Jay is currently a coach for Circus Smirkus and serves as the team supervisor for The Big Apple Circus Clown Care program at Children’s Hospital in Boston and in Providence at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Jay is thrilled to be asked to take the helm of Annie for his first show at Cotuit Center for the Arts and looks forward to bringing his comedic expertise to the production – because it’s true – you’re never fully dressed without a smile!

Music/Special Event Spotlight

THE INS AND OUTS OF TIME

by David M. Cohen

Tommy first appeared in May of 1969 as a double rock album by The Who. Innovative in being billed as the first rock opera, and truly expressive of music of the late 60s, Tommy was quickly a success. Primarily composed by The Who’s guitarist, Pete Townsend, it tells the story of a “deaf, dumb and blind kid,” the traumatized son of a WWI British Army Captain. Since its release, Tommy has sold over 20 million copies.

Because the lyrics and music were based on such a hauntingly rich plot, it seems almost strange that it took until 1992 for the album to be transformed into a rock opera for theater. It opened that summer at La Jolla Playhouse. The show was a collaboration of Townsend, John Entwistle, Keith Moon, and Sonny Boy Williamson. It opened on Broadway in 1993 and endured for 899 performances.

The Borromeo String Quartet photo by Eli Akerstein

26

The show’s plot takes place during World War II, and centers around Tommy, who suffers when he witnesses the violence of his estranged (and presumed dead) father who returns from the war and kills his mother’s new boyfriend. Here on Cape Cod, we are famous for our appreciation of age and tradition, as is evidenced by so much of our local talent. So, in 2014, our own rock group, Groovy Afternoon, well-known around here for their renditions of hits by the Rolling Stones, Steppenwolf, and other classic rockers, will perform a rock concert adaptation of the Broadway show The Who’s Tommy at CCftA.

Lead singer Christine Mascott, known for her classic rock voice, and guitarist-husband Paul Mascott, who has played over 1000 performances of The Who’s Tommy internationally under the direction of Pete Townsend himself, will lead band members and additional “musical friends” in this exciting event. So, we have a rock opera set in WWI, created in the 60’s, transformed into a theater production set in WWII, that opened in 1992, now adapted back to a rock concert format to be performed live by Groovy Afternoon in 2014. The definition of Classic Cape Cod... for sure!

Soft-Shoe it... At cotuit! “… I actually felt that I was able to understand, keep up, and make sense of dance moves -- and it’s very exciting,” says one of Susan Friedman’s Adult Tap Dance students. According to Susan Friedman, the adult tap dance instructor at Cotuit Center for the Arts, “anyone who would like to learn to tap can learn to tap,” and she says many of her students have had some experience with tap somewhere in their past – usually as a child, but it’s a skill that’s exhilarating to rediscover as a grown-up. And shuffle-ball-step is a good workout. Susan says “this is a much better way to get exercise than the gym, especially while enjoying great music of all genres – from oldies to show tunes, to pop and big band to the classics.” The class is fun and not at all intimidating, and any person with a basic level of fitness can participate. Susan divides the class into two sections: warm-ups to get everyone limber and ready, then technique and skills, to get the class really moving. The choreography starts after a few weeks when everyone has mastered a few steps. This class is geared for the beginner to intermediate dancer, but even experienced dancers are welcome – it’s a blast! A typical class has 12 students, a good size for group instruction. Right: Susan Friedman leads her class of hoofers.

BY Melinda Gallant

Susan has been teaching for over 30 years on the Cape and owned Dance Designs, Inc. until 2012. “I have been dancing since I was a child, and began to focus on jazz and tap as a young adult,” she says. Susan loves teaching this class at the Center. “Adults catch on easily, and they really enjoy the music. They also know their right from their left” she jokes. In addition to Tap for Adults, Susan teaches Dance for Broadway Kids and Just Dance, also for kids. She also leads Hip Hop workshops for youngsters Cape-wide. Susan has been a Cotuit native for 38 years, and has watched the transformation of CCftA. She sees it as a cultural garden bursting with flowers in the spring, she enthuses, “The people I have met here are fantastic! It’s a wonderfully creative atmosphere for all artists.”

Gallery Spotlight

The Enigma of 4am From October 23 through November 24, the lower gallery at the Center will be completely transformed into a site-specific installation guaranteed to ignite conversations and opinions by our visitors. “The Enigma of 4am” was inspired by Giacometti’s “Palace at 4am” and developed by artists Laurie Kaplowitz, Stacy Latt Savage, and Katha Seidman. The three artists will also serve as jurors for the Center’s open juried exhibit, “Time Framed,” to be presented in the upstairs galleries.

Image: A model of the installation

4 a.m. is a time before dawn, between sleep and waking. Domestic cares become wishes for revenge, for change, for hope. Our bodies float and turn, transforming daily routines into acts with surprising meaning. Everything here seems off kilter, uneasy. Beyond this doorway, there must be transcendence. Laurie Kaplowitz is a figurative painter committed to Expressive Figuration. Stacy Latt Savage is a sculptor whose work is displayed in a variety of

42

venues including museums, galleries, and outdoor public settings. Katha Seidman is an accomplished artist and twotime Emmy Award winning production designer. What these three talented women bring to the creation of one exhibition is something exciting, provocative, and groundbreaking for our gallery. We hope you’ll take the time to contemplate the exhibition and to meet the artists at the opening reception or gallery talk.

Letter from

t n e id s e r P d r a o B e h T Uh Oh. It’s Fall. And do you know what that means? Yep. It’s annual appeal time. No wait! Read on. This is important. Do you know the difference between Membership and Annual Appeal? If you thought “It’s just two different ways of asking for money,” you’re wrong – it’s two different ways of receiving value for your donation. But you should already know this because we have been talking about it a lot this year. Membership is a way to support the organization through your donation and to receive benefits as you participate in the organization’s programs. The nice thing about membership is that the more you participate, the more benefits you enjoy. And the benefit that the organization gets is your membership dues which go to supporting those programs you enjoy. Membership is thus a win-win proposition for both you and the Center. Your Annual Appeal donation on the other hand, is pure and simply a way for you to support the Center. Your donation goes directly towards the day to day operation of the Center. You get nothing for this donation, except for, well… um, the Center which is of course more like everything than nothing. Without our Annual Appeal donations, there wouldn’t be a Center. There truly would be nothing to support. So please, don’t confuse the two – Membership and Annual Appeal. These are two different things, with two different joint purposes. And so, when you have a chance to donate to the Annual Appeal, don’t miss that chance. We need and value your support. Thank you, Jim Hoeck President, Cotuit Center for the Arts

Summer Interns

Do It at Cotuit Interviews by Hannah McLaughlin

Do you ever wonder what it’s like to go behind the scenes at CCftA? Then get to know the CCftA Interns Hannah McLaughlin, Brian Paul, Rose Webster, Paul Presbrey, Sarah Besserer, and Griffin Miller! As interns they are introduced to various tasks and experiences within the Center guided by the staff giving them an inside look at what it takes to run an arts center. How did you get involved with Cotuit Center for the Arts?

production of “Treasure Island” I’ve been volunteering ever since.

HM: Ever since “Jacques Brel” in 2012 I’ve volunteered and worked backstage in the technical area (teching) for many shows over the past two years.

SB: I originally took a few classes here when I was younger which led me to interning here.

BP: My first involvement with the Center began in 2009 while I was in high school. My current role as an intern stemmed from earlier volunteer work and from a desire to look into the administrative background of non-profit arts organizations. RW: I was introduced to CCftA with Theater Under the Stairs and I’ve been volunteering and teching shows since 2010. PP: After being in the 2010 Above: Rose Webster, Brian Paul, Hannah McLaughlin, and Paul Presbrey

66

GM: My parents are involved and come to a lot of events. What skills do you hope to gain from this experience? PP: I hope to gain a basic knowledge of carpentry and painting that I can use in my adult life. BP: I hope to gain a knowledge of the administrative needs of a local community arts organization. SB: I hope to improve my teaching skills and help the Center’s community.

What’s your goal with this internship? GM: My goal with this internship is to learn about building sets and other construction projects that are related to the theatre. BP: My goal is to learn as much as I can about the administrative background of arts organizations and apply that experience and knowledge going forward to any other internship or employment that I may have. What do you like about working here? RW: I like the community the Admin building provides, and the different personalities everyone has in the office. PP: I enjoy being a part of the team that transforms the set from an idea or a sketch on a piece of paper to a life size, 3-D model.

If you could pick a mascot for CCftA, what would it be? HM: A Chameleon, because chameleons are ever changing just like the Center in its ever changing display of theatre, art, and music. BP: A Beaver, because Cotuit Center for the Arts has built a really incredible organization and it keeps growing! RW: An Octopus, because they have a tentacle in every aspect of the arts. PP: A Race Car, because things happen so fast around here. SB: A Hyena, because the Cotuit Center is a place that is very happy with joyful classes. GM: A Monster made of props and other set pieces, because it’d be cool.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

HM: I like the friendly atmosphere and learning new things from others in the theatre’s community.

Hannah McLaughlin (18) is a freshman at Wheelock College

If you could be David Kuehn for a day, what would you do?

Rose Webster (17) is a senior at Sturgis Charter Public School West

HM: I would invest in cup holders for the balcony!

Brian Paul (21) is a senior at UMass Amherst

BP: I would probably like to just drive his brand new Prius around all day...

Paul Presbrey (19) is a sophomore at Bard College

RW: I would probably take a nap!

Sarah Besserer (17) is a senior at Coleyville Heritage High school

PP: I would make sure “Sweeney Todd” is on the slate for 2015! GM: Throw a pizza party for all the interns!

Griffin Miller (14) is a freshman at Cape Cod Academy

Pick a song to describe your internship at CCftA. HM: “We’re All in this Together” from High School Musical BP: “Intro” - Disclosure RW: “On My Way To Work” - Paul McCartney PP: “I Like to Move It” -Reel 2 Real SB & GM: “Happy” - Pharrell Williams

Variations

interview by Christine Ernst

33 Variations, the 2009 Tony Award-Winning play by Moisés Kaufman (The Laramie Project), is our Mainstage production this fall. We talked with the team behind the show – director Mary Arnault, and her husband, designer Andy Arnault – about mounting this exciting play. CCftA: Tell us about the play. Mary: This is a play about transfigurations – of characters, their relationships, their perspectives of each other, their perspectives of music, and of the music itself. It is told through the shared arc of the interwoven stories of Dr. Katherine Brandt and Ludwig Van Beethoven, both of whom are obsessively trying to finish their work while combating debilitating physical challenges before their times on earth run out. Beethoven suffered terrible physical

70

maladies and painful deafness, while Katherine has been stricken with A.L.S. Beethoven spent many of his final years in dogged discovery of all the variations he could compose on a trifle written by a music publisher – Katherine is trying to discover why he chose to spend precious final years on a seemingly insignificant waltz. To tell these stories, the playwright bends time and space, disregarding normal boundaries and intermingling genres. All of the characters are connected through the music. The play starts with a pianist playing the original theme, who then continues throughout the play performing all the variations in their transfigurations. CCftA: What do you hope audiences will take away from the play?

The World’s greatest Composer a 200-year-old mystery and the moments of beauty that can transform a life... Mary: This script is exquisite. I hope that the audience will take away an appreciation of the heights and depths of the human spirit, as seen in the transfigurations found in this play. Beethoven wrote 33 variations on a simple waltz theme. Moises Kaufman has written 33 scenes, 33 moments in shared time which are, in his words, “a way to reclaim all that is fleeting, allowing us to see with new eyes.” CCftA: What is your vision for the play? Andy: This play presents a universe in which characters from different time periods converge, and share space and props. In order to find the vastness of such a universe, we need distance, depth and levels. The set is spare and open. It makes extensive use of projections and videos. Visual textures will be brought to life with costumes and props. We will also make imaginative use of sound.

coalesce into a realization of that vision. When I (Mary) work with other designers, I present my ideas on the project, and then work with the designs that are bounced back to me. But when we work together, we are intimately connected throughout the entire process, from initial concepts through the final rehearsals. Please join us for the Cape premiere of 33 Variations, running Sept 25 - Oct 11, and starring Susan Winslow, Jamie Lynn Stuart, Daniel Price, Rick Martin, Michael Ernst, Linda Monchik, and Matthew Kohler. David Kuehn will be the featured pianist playing Beethoven’s 33 Variations.

CCftA: Tell us a little bit about working together. Mary and Andy: We are partners. We work together to develop a shared vision in which design and dramaturgy evolve together. It’s fulltime collaboration! When I (Andy) work with other directors, I’ll start by finding the director’s vision, and then present design ideas which eventually

Paintings by Brian Rutenberg by David Kuehn I first became aware of Brian Rutenberg following an interview on CBC Radio where he discussed the fact that the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould had been the most important role model in his life. Gould said, “The purpose of art is the gradual, lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity.” Looking online at Brian’s series of “Gradual Motets,” I was instantly drawn to his unique and gorgeous style of painting. It’s been a dream of mine for years to present this magnificent work at the Center. I brought the idea to our curatorial committee and they agreed that if there were ever a perfect opportunity to juxtapose work in the gallery that had a tangential connection to a theater production, it would be during our run of the Cape Cod premiere of “33 Variations,” a play that in part explores the creative process of Beethoven, a composer for whom, in addition to Bach, Glenn Gould is widely considered the foremost authority, performer and interpreter. So we invited Brian. And he said yes. I asked him to share some thoughts about the exhibition. I discovered the writings of Canadian political humorist Stephen Leacock 20 years ago during my annual trips to Ontario to study the life and work of Glenn Gould. Gould’s creative life brimmed with luck – Leacock luck. I have been painting for 38 years and it took me that long to finally realize that an artist is born the day they give up, when they

74

stop trying so hard. Giving up allows all of the self-awareness to fall away and with it hopefully the casual tropes of cynicism so prevalent in contemporary art, say what you want to say from your heart. Glenn Gould was such an artist. Art always fails before it succeeds, therefore the creator must maintain a constituency for failure; it is an artist’s best

“I am a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.” -Stephen Leacock friend. You can’t fail unless you are working and the best art usually looks (or sounds) like work, whether it be a Gees Bend quilt, a Rembrandt self-portrait, or series of variations for piano. I jumped at the chance to exhibit my paintings at Cotuit Center for the Arts in conjunction with performances of the play, 33 Variations, by Moisés Kaufman because I adore Beethoven’s music, especially his late work, and I am excited to share in a celebration of the creative process through the confluence of visual art, theater, and music. Art creates an excuse for us to look at one another, it brings us back into ourselves by first making us unrecognizable to ourselves, we are seeing the world through someone else’s eyes. Glenn Gould died on October 4th 1982 when I was a junior in High School. I never met him and I don’t think I’d have wanted to. Everything I need is in the work. What Gould taught me is that the best artists are the ones most like themselves; Charlie Parker

said “If you don’t live it it won’t come out of the horn”. What I look for in any work of art is a high speed collision between intellectual and visceral, or technique and wildness. Too much technique or concept feels academic and even pretentious while insanity without the chops to deliver it in tenable form feels out of control. The artists must affect a balance. A work of art doesn’t just appear, it has to be made. How much the artist loved us to make this thing for us to have, not for the recreating of an experience but the total possessing of it. Much has been written about Beethoven’s intense struggles and idiosyncrasies, the same for Gould. What is often overlooked is the less glamorous side of simply showing up to the studio every day, all day, and working. I hope that my exhibition together with the performances of 33 Variations will give audiences a rich glimpse into how a work of art comes into being, one mark at a time.

FOUR SQUARED FOUR FOUR PLAYWRIGHTS PLAYWRIGHTS FOUR FOUR PLAYS PLAYS FOUR FOUR THEATERS THEATERS FOUR FOUR SEASONS SEASONS

With generous support from the Kaplan Foundation, Cotuit Center for the Arts is proud to participate in a new collaboration designed to workshop four original plays by four local playwrights over the course of one year. Theater partners include Cotuit Center for the Arts, Harwich Junior Theatre, Provincetown Theater, and Woods Hole Theater Company. Each work will be presented in staged readings four times, once each season over the course of a year, in four venues from the upper Cape to the lower Cape, reaching four different audiences. The partners each invited a local playwright and asked that they pen a new full length play for up to six actors. Readings take place in the four theaters simultaneously, with each playwright rotating between the four venues. Dates of the performances are scheduled for May 5, August 4, November 3, 2014; and February 2, 2015 (Dates subject to change). A festival of all four plays will be scheduled at the completion of the cycle. Featured playwrights are Bronwen Prosser (Cotuit Center for the Arts), Susan Kosoff (Harwich

Junior Theatre), Candace Perry (Provincetown Theater) and Joe Richards (Woods Hole Theater Company). “The Kaplan Foundation has supported our Black Box Theater from its inception a few years ago. Since then we’ve been brainstorming a collaboration that would result in new plays presented Cape-wide in an unusual and interesting way. I’m thrilled we are moving forward with this innovative idea,” says David Kuehn, Executive Director of Cotuit Center for the Arts. David Kaplan, Kaplan Foundation President and Executive Director of the Cape & Islands Theater Coalition added, “I was very impressed with the Four Squared concept when David Kuehn first proposed it to me. The program supports the objectives of both the Foundation and the Coalition to nurture theater arts and promote collaboration among our region’s theaters, thus helping to continue the Cape and Island’s long tradition of theatrical excellence.” Please join us for these exciting premieres at the Center, or any of the participating venues.

one ear and out the other. Maybe it’s because I can’t wait to find out more about you or what is on your mind and I’m eager to get past the name part. Or maybe I’m terribly forgetful. After I’ve come to know you and our wonderful conversation ends, I always wish I knew your name. But then, it’s too late. What trait do you deplore in others? The quiet, passive, painful, shaming act of not listening. To me or to others. Our words don’t matter, are dismissed, are unimportant. The unseen text will no doubt be better, the person over our shoulder entering the room will relieve you of us? I hate when people do that. What quality do you admire most? Kindness. It is unselfish. It is empathetic. It can take effort, energy, even courage. It is powerful.

ANITA WALKER

The Executive Director of the Massachusetts Cultural Council answers the really important questions...

What is your greatest fear? I am the original helicopter parent and even though my “children” are now in their twenties my greatest fear is that harm will come to them. Favorite occupation? When I started out on my career path some 40 years ago I didn’t even know the job I have now existed, but it is indeed the job I love the best. It puts me in the midst of the most creative, kind, and dedicated people on the planet, people who love what they do in the arts, humanities and sciences, and who do it not for financial gain (there’s precious little of that), but because they are passionate about the way their work transforms lives and enriches all of us. What a privilege to have a small part in supporting this work. When are you happiest? As a confirmed optimist I’m convinced that “happiest” is yet to come. To think I have been there already would make the future seem much less appealing. What trait do you deplore in yourself? Don’t tell me your name because for some reason, I am not listening. I take in everything else, but for some reason your name goes in

What do you value in friends? Loyalty and honesty, encouragement, most of all fun. What is your greatest extravagance? Chocolate. Need I say more? OK, with pleasure. Chocolate bars, chocolate truffles, chocolate covered nuts, chocolate dipped ginger, chocolate covered orange peel, chocolate covered cranberries and cherries and blueberries, chocolate pie, chocolate cake, hot chocolate, chocolate sundaes, chocolate soda, chocolate tea, chocolate coffee, chocolate with sea salt, dark chocolate, darker chocolate. I love chocolate. Where would you like to live? In the city and in the country and on the beach and in the mountains and in a cabin and in a cottage and on the west coast and on the east coast and in London and Provence and Tuscany and places I’ve never been, and places I’ve been and loved and where ever I am. What is your greatest achievement? Yet to come. I’m working on it. Maybe tomorrow. Before I die. What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Strict punctuality. Anything within 10 minutes is good enough. If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be? A creature with wings and gills. What is it that you most dislike? Cruelty. When do you lie? Never. That’s a lie. Or is that a lie? What is your favorite journey? The one I’m planning.

Besides being with people, my hobbies are golf, bowling, gardening, sewing, decorating and theater. CCFTA: In what capacity do you usually volunteer? Tell us what you do.

JS: I am usually the Greeter/Will Call person who checks the patrons in and gives out the tickets. As do all the volunteers, I help to get the theater set up for the evening, answer any questions, and at the end of the show we all clean the theater up. I also recently became a member of the membership committee making calls to thank new people for joining or rejoining or maybe to remind them that their membership has lapsed. Also there are always mailings to help with. We recently planned the first Member Appreciation Social that was held on Sunday August 3rd. CCFTA: Why do you volunteer at the Center? JS: I volunteer at the Center because I love theater in general and am amazed at the talent on Cape Cod and how much time they commit to volunteering for these shows. Not being able to sing or act, I just appreciate what ever they do. And it doesn’t hurt that I get to see the shows for just giving my time. As I mentioned, I’m widowed, so this is one way to keep involved with the community. CCFTA: What is your favorite part of your job? JS: I think my favorite part of volunteering at the Center is the people. Whether it is staff, volunteers or patrons. I always feel appreciated. And almost always I get to see someone I have known for years or have met through my many volunteer jobs and we get to catch up on life. Looking back I guess I can say I’m a people person.

Board Member Spotlight Carol Sandler As the longest serving Board Member of Cotuit Center for the Arts, Carol Sandler first became associated with the Center when she was a member of the Cape Cod Art Association and began bringing the women she painted with to the earliest art classes held here in the Art Barn. That and her presence in the art community led to her joining the board, which at that time had only four to five members. Married to world-renowned author and Pulitzer Prize-nominated Martin Sandler, Carol holds her own as an accomplished artist in her own right. She has studied at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and although she no longer exhibits, Carol continues to paint with oils, acrylic, watercolor, and charcoal. She was featured as a multimedia artist in the Summer/ Fall 2007 issue of Cape Cod Life Magazine. Not surprisingly, she was also a fashion model in an earlier career. Carol’s humility, quiet nature, and gentle manner belie the rich and accomplished life she has led. With a Ph.D. in Organizational Management, Carol worked in the public sector as an consultant on organizational change and management issues and is considered a pioneer of the women’s movement. In the mid-1960’s she conducted a study on women in management at the Center for Research on Women at Wellesley College. Her study, which focused on issues women faced and their experiences in upward mobility within organizations, was published in the New York Times and was considered groundbreaking work at the time. When asked what she likes best about being a board member of the Center, Carol smiled and said “I love that they keep asking me to come back!” With her background in community issues and commitment to improving relationships among people, she feels that she is able to contribute to the Board in unique ways. Referring to the philosophy of Cotuit Center for the Arts, Carol added “I feel strongly about community-based organizations. I love to support the Center.” As we were finishing up our chat, I asked to see some of her paintings. Carol graciously and enthusiastically led me from room to room, from one vibrant painting to another, most of them showcasing her love of flowers bursting with bright colors that complement her personality. Carol is clearly passionate about the Center and all that goes on here. “Being a part of the Center means a lot to me,” she said. You mean a lot to the Center, too, Carol… indeed you do!

Member Spotlight Ron and Sharon Nunes If you were lucky enough to attend the Center’s 1st Annual Kentucky Derby Gala in May, you probably already know Ron and Sharon Nunes, Having become Center Circle members, Ron and Sharon decided to “really get involved” by developing a whole new event for Cotuit. This was truly a labor of love for a couple who, after 32 years of living in Connecticut, Minnesota, and New York, returned “home” to Cape Cod. Ron grew up in Taunton and Sharon in Wareham, and both spent summer vacations with their families on the Cape. They both remembered those days fondly, but it wasn’t until many years later that they were drawn back when their daughter took a summer intern job with the Wareham Gatemen baseball team. Soon after, they bought a second home in Falmouth. In 2010, when Ron retired, they moved down full-time and began volunteering at the Cape Cod Foundation. There they learned about CCftA. They visited the Center and immediately felt welcome – and part of the Cotuit family. After watching the Kentucky Derby with friends last year, they hatched a plan to watch it on Cotuit’s big screen in 2014. They brought the idea to David Kuehn for a full Derby Day Gala and got his enthusiastic thumbs-up. With previous experience in putting on big events, Ron and Sharon (with outstanding support from the Center staff) created a fabulous 1st Annual Derby event that included more than 125 people, including 70 guests in gorgeous “Derby” hats. There were house-special mint juleps, delicious hors d’oeuvres, several real-live horses on the campus, a ridiculous and fun trike race in the parking lot featuring a few Center celebrities, a delightful hat parade, and some bona-fide betting action. Win, place, or show, it was a grand event, hosted by our own gracious Grandmasters, Sharon and Ron. Can’t wait for the next CCftA Run for the Roses in 2015! Article by Dale Silva
