Letter from the President

Welcome to Cotuit Center for the Arts! The Center is, in the truest sense of the phrase, a community arts center. Our community of members, volunteers, performers, artists, teachers, sponsors, donors, and patrons, along with David and our dedicated staff, make remarkable things happen here. During the past six months, our Facilities and Strategic Planning Committee has been working with our architects to develop the plan for our future campus. One important part of this process was defining the vision for the Center, defining what elements of the Center are vital to the character of this incredibly special place. In a series of meetings with stakeholders, the word community came up repeatedly, and it was evident

that folks come to the Center for so much more than a show or a class. They come to connect with people, to share and socialize, to experience art in a warm and welcoming environment. We also heard that as the Center grows, it is critical to maintain that sense of community — its energy, vibrancy, and warmth. And that’s exactly what we plan to do! Enjoy your time here. You are part of an amazing community of people, a gathering place where art is celebrated and all are welcome. Thank you for being here and for your continuing support. Best always, Kathie Lynch Nutting

Proud to Support Cotuit Center for the Arts

Greetings!

Greetings and welcome to Cotuit Center for the Arts. Whether you are visiting for the first time or one of our thousands of regular patrons, you are probably aware that exciting things are happening here. Our educational programs are exploding; our theatrical productions, concerts, and special events range from the provocative to the popular; and our reputation as a community arts and culture center consistently presenting professional quality work continues to grow. Speaking of growing, just look around. We are in the middle of a major campaign to reinvent our campus and do something that will be transformative for our village and the Cape as a whole. We need a larger performance space without losing our current ones. With a new educational wing, we could quadruple the number of classes and provide opportunities

for students we are currently unable to serve. We will have a beautiful new green space where kids and adults can enjoy activities without having to cross driveways. One third of our campus will consist of natural forest, and we have already made a significant contribution to the town by removing potentially toxic underground storage tanks from the former gas station. Fulfillment of our dream is expensive AND will benefit our community on many levels. If you would like to hear more, or take a tour of the campus with me or any member of our staff or board, please let us know. I’m sure you’ll agree we are a great investment. So enjoy your time with us and think about the future possibilities while you’re here. All of us at Cotuit Center for the Arts are grateful for your support. 2019 THEATER SEASON

Mainstage OF MICE AND MEN by John Steinbeck January 24 – February 10 John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men is one of the best-loved stories of all time. Two drifters – small, shrewd George and huge, simple-minded Lennie – get work on a ranch, planning to raise enough money to get a place of their own and live off the land, if George can save his childlike, bull-strong friend from getting into trouble.

12 | Do It at Cotuit

A TALENTED WOMAN by Jim Dalglish & Lynda Sturner March 21 – April 7 World Premiere Production. Her practical daughter – who has her own set of problems with an unemployed husband and hellion daughter – insists that she begin a new life of austerity and sacrifice.

THE ODD COUPLE by Neil Simon April 11 – 27 Neil Simon’s classic comedy hit! When Felix becomes suicidal over his impending divorce, he accepts an offer to move in with his friend, the jovial but messy Oscar. Felix drives Oscar and the poker-playing gang crazy with his obsession over his soon-tobe ex. Oscar tries to get him out of his funk by arranging a double date with two British neighbors, Cecily and Gwendolyn. When the plan backfires and Felix grows even more despondent, his friendship with Oscar is put to the test. Neil Simon at his best in this fast paced comedy that will keep you laughing!

Doctor Dolittle: THE MUSICAL! by Leslie Bricusse November 26 – December 22 The classic tale of kindness to animals trots, crawls, and flies onto the stage in Doctor Dolittle, the big Broadway-sized family musical. FACB fatasscancerbitch

still a

2019 bitch So who would have thunk a loudmouth middle-aged woman calling herself the Fat Ass Cancer Bitch – or the FACB, for a less-alarming acronym – would have success with a one-woman-show featuring stories about menopause, marriage, aging parents, politics, social justice, and cancer? I am a fortunate woman. Returning to the Center (well, I never actually leave the Center) every summer since 2011 with a mostly-new collection of essay and poetry mashed up together into a kind of stand-up comedy/storytelling show, I am grateful for the big stage, the beautiful venue, the wonderful audiences. It tickles me that folks know me as (variously) the Big Ass Cancer Bitch, the Big Loud Bitch, the Smartass Cancer Bitch, the Big Fat Bitch, and as often happens at Stop & Shop – “hey, you’re that Bitch!” It was a lucky day in 2006 when my neighbor, whose Great Dane’s poop I had found (again) in my yard and was thoughtfully returning to her driveway, called me a fat ass cancer bitch.* It struck me as absurd (I did not, at that time, have a fat ass) and slightly delightful – and certainly better than “survivor.” I claimed the brand, had some bumper stickers printed, and here we are.

This year’s show, “Still a Bitch,” is 80-or-so minutes of personal stories interspersed with some terrible jokes and the occasional political commentary – sort of a really long Moth Hour. But – there is a full bar in the Gallery, and I give you cookies and a free fridge magnet. How bad could it be? Come and see. – CHRISTINE ERNST * my neighbor apologized in 2009 and we have exchanged Christmas gifts ever since.

FACB: Still a Bitch will be performed on the Main Stage Theater July 15-16. Do It at Cotuit | 17

Concert Spotlight

Cotuit Center for the Arts is proud to present the Cape Cod premiere of a stunning new work that received its world premiere at New York’s Prototype Festival in January 2018. A free diver descends into the depths of the ocean, never to resurface. As her terrestrial ties dissolve, she embarks upon an Odyssean journey. Transported by the sea’s currents, she encounters a mystifying underworld with billions of bioluminescent creatures, endlessly inventive structures of coral, gyres of human detritus, and abandoned nets still fishing for no one – sights both awe-inspiring and devastating.

“The artists have created the strongest message possible. They do not preach. Instead they move us.” – Susan Hall, Berkshire Fine Arts

Black Inscription, written by Carla Kihlstedt, Matthias Bossi, Jeremy Flower, and directed by Kihlstedt and Mark DeChiazza, is an immersive multimedia song cycle by a team of veteran creators, drawing on the most powerful aspects of rock, contemporary classical, and pop music. Education Spotlight

with Neil Maciejewski am currently working out of my home studio in Cotuit and teaching stained glass classes here at the Center. Teaching the art of stained glass at CCftA has been extremely rewarding and has furthered my passion for stained glass by teaching others how to create beautiful art.”

Meet Neil Maciejewski! Recently returned to his home state of MA after living in California for many years, Neil is an artist who began designing in stained glass at the age of 19, learning the craft and honing his skills with San Francisco – and Boston-based glass artists for the past 25 years. Neil accepts private commissions, working closely with homeowners to create the perfect window, and his work is featured in homes on both the west and east coasts. Neil says, “After living in San Francisco for the past 12 years, I left my career in advertising and moved back home to Massachusetts where I am focusing on my stained glass art. I

Neil joined our Curatorial Committee earlier this year and began teaching the art of making stained glass in the Schoolhouse classroom here in March. An immediate hit, Neil’s classes have become very popular and his students return again and again. The Center invested in some equipment: soldering guns, light boxes, safety gear (glasses and gloves!), pliers and cutters, and Neil generously loaned us what we didn’t have. Students first choose a design, then choose materials from Neil’s extensive and gorgeous library of colored and textured glass, then cut and grind the pieces to fit into their design – the results are stunning. We are thrilled that Neil has joined the Center family and can’t wait to see the exciting work his classes produce!

JURIED EXHIBIT:

Proud to be american Each year the Center features open juried exhibitions where artists from around the region and beyond are able to enter work for consideration for the show. It’s a wonderful way to showcase a wide variety of work mostly created by artists from our own community. Our next juried exhibit will be “Proud to be American.” “Proud to be American” runs August 3 – September 1 and will be juried by local artist Joe Diggs and the curator of his show “Joe Diggs: A Tribute To Joe’s Twin Villa,” Mara Williams. For many local patrons, Joe’s Twin Villa, a legendary hot spot in Osterville and the inspiration for this highly anticipated exhibition, will be a draw. The opening reception will feature a festival atmosphere with a day of music, barbecue, and brews. A digital gallery of photographic images will round out the open juried part of this exhibit. We encourage entries in all artistic mediums, including 2- and 3- dimensional works on video, etc. All artists of all abilities are encouraged to submit work. Entry fees are $10 for members and $15 for the general public per entry, and all work must be submitted gallery-ready. Drop off date for “Proud to be American” is July 29. Do It at Cotuit | 41

SUMMER UNDER

THE TENT

Summers on Cape Cod are special for anyone lucky enough to experience them, but they are particularly special for children. Memories are made with activities from baseball games and picnics to beach days and camping trips. Here at Cotuit Center for the Arts, we are proud to announce that our favorite memory-making summer fixture is returning for another season: The outdoor Schoolhouse Stage (a.k.a. “the tent”)! “The tent” is our beloved, seasonal, outdoor stage that comes to life in the summer months. Throughout our 48 | Do It at Cotuit

popular array of Schoolhouse Stage classes, participants enjoy planning a production and performing in the summer breeze. Kids and teens hone their performance chops while learning what goes on behind the scenes to create theatrical magic. At the conclusion of each session, families and friends are invited to view the performance and watch these young artists shine on stage. For the 2019 season, we have three exciting opportunities to experience life in the outdoor limelight. Performers, age 6-10, will love Stories on Stage with instructor Genevieve

Breitbach. This summer lab will teach aspiring entertainers how to develop stories from their everyday lives into crowd-pleasing, attention-grabbing productions. Kids will participate in theater games, improv, and a variety of other engaging and creative activities to expand their theatrical skills. If karaoke, dance, and stage combat sound like skills your child would like to add to their acting repertoire, then educator Ed O’Toole and dance extraordinaire Susan Friedman’s Summer Theater Lab: Green Eggs in Eastham will be a hit. During this camp, kids will learn a variety of new performance skills while putting a Cape Cod twist on an old childhood favorite. Whether participants have experience with performance or not, all of our

expert teachers and mentors work effectively with each individual to foster their talents and bolster their confidence both on and off the stage. Participants will gain a love for collaboration and teamwork, as well as a sense of pride in seeing an entire performance come together. Year after year, our youth summer programs have provided wonderful experiences and memories for budding young artists. The Center offers a variety of wonderful summer classes for people of all ages. We invite you to explore our offerings and enroll today, before classes fill up. Make this summer one to remember by creating unforgettable experiences. - CANDACE COLLIER

ABOUT

CHARITY! We’ve had (or at least David’s had) an idea for a while of running two big shows during the summer season. Our programming in August is dedicated to concerts and some musical tributes, festivals, and so forth. So many of our summer patrons have asked for more of our high-quality stage productions, that we hatched an idea to run two shows in rep. Both productions will share a stage, a stage manager, set designer, lighting designer, musical director, and pit musicians, and both shows will have 14 performances. Once the shows are open, each cast will perform one week, then

52 | Do It at Cotuit

have a week off, then back for a week for a total of 6 weeks. Our actors will have a chance to enjoy more of the summer and recharge their batteries between shows while our audiences have an opportunity to see two fantastic productions. And don’t expect your traditional Shakespeare or Musical Comedy – Directors Ed O’Toole and Michele Colley and their hugely talented crew of designers and artists have some surprises and tricks up their sleeves that will leave you smiling from ear to ear. We’re looking forward to the most exciting summer season yet!

Theater. Music. Art.

And Stella Blue! BY KIM BAKER

If you rolled into our parking lot on Friday, March 22, you would have run into Stella Blue, the nifty rambling blue bus of the ClayChick Studio. This beautiful art bus was here as part of a CapeCodCAN program. Students of all abilities created a hanging clay bird feeder. And the program was SOLD OUT! Welcome to the growing art programming of The Cape Cod Collaborative Arts Network (CapeCodCAN)! CapeCodCAN is a 56 | Do It at Cotuit

stand-alone, self-sustaining program of Cotuit Center for the Arts dedicated to inclusive arts, music, and theater for people with all abilities on Cape Cod and in Plymouth. Shared art experiences can build communities like nothing else can. Each of CapeCodCAN’s programs promotes inclusion and celebration of capabilities, regardless of disabilities. Over the last five years, CapeCodCAN collaborative programs have provided

hundreds of people with disabilities the chance to participate in the arts and have introduced large audiences to their aweinspiring talents. In addition to performing in the popular musical revues on the Cotuit stage several times each year, CapeCodCAN performers participated in March in a staged reading with other actors in 2nd Wednesday Theater’s Testing Testing by Alan Haehnel. This unique inclusive experience was in collaboration with WatermelonAlligator Theater Company. A six-week Acting Studio class facilitated by Garrett Olson and Jessica Wilson culminated in the reading and a fabulous performance. WatermelonAlligator also mentors a ten-member improv troupe that most recently was invited by the Department of Developmental Services to conduct workshops in southern New England. Participants role play, offer peer mentoring, and do skits to bring awareness to developmental challenges. Ongoing programs include public art projects, such as the mosaic totem statue that now resides outside the MSPCA in Centerville, the popular Art Shanties and the Sun Porch Gallery at the Schoolhouse, displaying and selling art by CapeCodCAN art class participants. The Art Shanties will be open in Hyannis from June 13-16, and the Sun Porch Gallery opens again in late April. In September 2017, CapeCodCAN launched “Engaged in Learning,” an integrated afterschool arts pilot program with Sandwich Above left: Students on the ClayChick Bus. Below left: CapeCodCAN students perform Testing Testing.

High School. “Engaged in Learning” aims to enhance the educational and social experiences of teens from special education/life skills classrooms and typical learning peers. The program continues to grow and evolve. It is jointly facilitated by CapeCodCAN artist instructors and special education teachers at each of four Cape Cod high schools. CapeCodCAN looks forward to bringing “Engaged in Learning” to high schools across the Cape. The 2018-2020 program is supported by grant funding from United Way and the Tower Foundation. But hold onto your hats! Blowing the roof off the Art Studio is the monthly Open Mic! Participants of all abilities are welcome. Recently, they performed music, comedy, and poetry. In addition to providing socialization, this popular program increases self-awareness and self-confidence. So please drop by on the last Friday of the month to lend your ear, your support, your talent! Programming continues to grow and evolve. And we always need and want your support. If you want to support CapeCodCAN, you can donate on the website capecodcan.org and follow us on Facebook @capecodcollaborativeartsnetwork. And you can take a class! We all love the arts. And all abilities are welcome. Maybe buy a birthday gift for your sister at the Sun Porch Gallery or at the Art Shanties. CapeCodCAN arts programming is alive and evolving. DREAMING BIG Cotuit Center for the Arts campus expansion

Cotuit Center for the Arts is dreaming big. The Center is embarking on a major campus expansion that will be transformative for the community. The Center has been exploding at the seams and needs to grow in order to fulfill its mission. Flansburgh Architects, under the guidance of our board, staff, and facilities committee, has come up 60 | Do It at Cotuit

with a new plan that supports the vision and goals of Cotuit Center for the Arts while honoring its legacy. The new plan organizes performance venues, art galleries, community spaces, and educational spaces around a central green. This organization concentrates the energy and vitality of CCftA through a shared, outdoor, multigenerational experience. The

expanded campus will provide a range of venues including the conversion of the existing 200-seat theater to a flexible performance, exhibit, and reception space, addition of a 400-seat theater, retention of the existing black box theater, and a new multipurpose movement and rehearsal space that can support small music ensembles and dance performance. New educational studios will minimize conflicts and allow all programs to thrive in an atmosphere of collaboration and interdependency. The plan envisions an outdoor sculpture garden and nature path that will extend

art outdoors fostering a connection with nature. These spaces, combined with the main lobby, will provide the Center with the physical facilities to increase its regional influence and bring more arts offerings to the community. In the end, Cotuit Center for the Arts is about positive social engagement through the arts. The expanded and overlapping programs located in multiple buildings, situated in an open, park-like setting will enhance and build upon the Center’s treasured community experience. - BY DAVID KUEHN AND TRACY LABONTE Do It at Cotuit | 61

INTERN Hi! My name is Emma Wannie, and I’m a high school intern in the Development Department here at Cotuit Center for the Arts. I am currently just finishing my senior year at Barnstable High School and plan to move to New York in the fall where I will be studying Arts and Entertainment Management. I’ve always had a passion for the arts! Throughout my life I’ve been involved in music, dance, and theater. Something that I say I’m very passionate about is keeping the spirit of the arts alive, and after my experience interning at Cotuit Center for the Arts, I know I can fulfill that goal. I found out about the Center from friends who have auditioned for shows here. I would come to watch them perform and would be blown away by each production. The sets were stunning; the music was incredible; and the amount of time, effort, and commitment shined through on stage. Back in 8th grade, I auditioned to 72 | Do It at Cotuit

be in the Barnstable High School Drama Club in their production of Anything Goes. After falling in love with being on stage, I found a calling to join the backstage crew. Through my dedication and my love for the arts and theater, I gained the title of Barnstable High School Drama Club President this school year. I’m currently running rehearsals, marketing, making connections, assisting directors, and coordinating between the actors and the crew. All of these duties I carry out are connected to what I do here at Cotuit Center for the Arts. Through coordinating with the lively Development Department, I’ve gained

business tactics and organizational skills that I know will stick with me through college and as I grow into a management career. Being an intern has broadened my views and experience relating to the business side of the arts. Seeing different departments converging to plan, devise, and administrate opened my eyes to how many parts need to fit together in order to run a business. One aspect that I’ve noticed in order to run a well-oiled machine like CCftA is the staff and administrators. About once a month, I have the opportunity to attend staff meetings and hear about reports of the staff’s personal tasks and updates on bigger projects,

like the current capital campaign to expand the campus. Every director, supervisor, and manager has such a friendly and welcoming personality and a loving passion to make every detail count. At my first interview here last spring, I was greeted enthusiastically by Tracy LaBonte and her team and was invited to sit and have lunch with them and talk about and how I would benefit as a Development Department intern. That inviting and charismatic atmosphere is what I was looking for at an internship, and it’s exactly what Cotuit is all about! - BY EMMA WANNIE

Board Member Spotlight

Ashley LaCroix what role I wanted to play, and in the Fall of 2018, I had a successful audition! Where did you grow up, and how and where did you end up on the Cape?

How did you get involved the Board at CCftA? Over the past several years, I have gotten to know the incredible individuals that work so hard to make the organization as wonderful as it is, and I often found myself pondering on how I could best contribute. Many of the actors with whom I have performed had suggested that I become involved with the Board, and although I appreciated their faith in me, I never pursued it. The experience that truly ignited my desire for a spot on the Board was after working as the Stage Manager for Jesus Christ Superstar in 2018. It was the first time I was on the other side of a show, and I was amazed at the coordination and effort from all areas of the Center it took to deliver a quality end product. After JCS closed and the time I was spending at CCftA was back in the House, I started to see that the most impactful way I could personally give back to the organization that I loved so much was to be a member of the Board and provide perspective and insight from my experience as an actor and production team member. I had defined 74 | Do It at Cotuit

I am from Glens Falls, NY, a lovely city on the southern tip of the Adirondack Mountains. I came to the Cape in 1998 and settled in Yarmouth initially, and after five years, I relocated to Centerville. I love the quaint villages of the Cape and being so close to the ocean. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to live in such a beautiful part of our county. Tell us a little bit about your work. I work at Merrill Lynch as a member of a Wealth Management team, The Gulmann Group. I am one of two fully registered representatives working with three Financial Advisors in the Hyannis office. Building meaningful relationships with our clients and providing service for their needs is my primary role; however, my specialization on the team is Trusts and Estates. I have had the privilege of working with Merrill Lynch since 2004 and I truly love what I do. It’s an industry that affords me the opportunity to learn and grow every single day. Family? Kids? Pets? Tell us a little about your home life. I have an amazing group friends and a significant other who treats me like a queen. I do not have any of my own children; however, I am blessed with the kids of my friends that

let me take on such titles as “Second Mom” and “Best Auntie.” Every single day I stop and think about how grateful I am to have such meaningful relationships. I truly have a wonderful life. What do you do for fun? I love to cook and I love to entertain. There’s nothing better than looking around my dining room table as my guests sip on a glass of wine with dinner, creating memories together. What do you love about the Center? CCftA is a family. It’s that intimacy that makes the Center so special. I love that when I walk through the door, I feel welcomed and cared for by each and every person with whom I come into contact. Everyone is invested in making our space warm and welcoming while providing a vast array of cultural experiences to our community. The classes, the gallery exhibits, concerts, musicals and plays, the Black Box… all of it brought to you by an extraordinary group of talented individuals working together to ensure what we do is the

very best, and in my opinion – IT IS! What do you find rewarding about being on the Board of Directors? The time and dedication that each person at the Board level gives coupled with the leadership of David Kuehn as the Executive Director of Cotuit Center for the Arts makes our organization the envy of its peers. To be a member of the Board with such an esteemed group of individuals sharing the same passion and commitment to the Center as I do is indeed rewarding. Any thoughts about our exciting expansion plans? It’s going to be magnificent! No detail has been left unturned, from the aesthetically pleasing design to the environmental considerations, not to mention the new fabulous campus our actors, artists, volunteers, staff and patrons will be able to enjoy. When I see what the Center is going to look, like I am ecstatic. What a magical time for CCftA!

Cori and Larry Egan Cori and Larry Egan are tried and true Cape Codders. By local standards, of course they are Wash-Ashores. Wee Sprongs who just fell off the turnip truck one day and found themselves covered in beach sand and lobster juice. Flatlanders by the Sea. Yet both have assimilated so neatly into Cape Cod culture, indeed define so much that is Cape Codlian that one hardly remembers what it was like before they were here. Cori hails from Connecticut, specifically West Haven, which may mean that she is either Italian or wicked educated or both. Larry represents the more local hamlet of Norwood, MA. This seems like a reasonable place to hail from because folks on this side of the bridge know all about the Auto Mile and the Lebanese Restaurants, and thus Norwood is on the road trip list for both. Cori and Larry feel as familiar as their hometowns, too, which is no wonder since both majored in some form of Communications in college and are really very good at it. If you have encountered either of them, you know them and recognize what it means to be their friend. They are kindred spirits to all of us and fun to be around. Larry is a broadcaster, radio personality, and home improvement guru. As a long-time contractor and host of the beloved radio show “The Handyman Hotline” with co-host John O’Rourke, Larry helps locals tackle home improvement projects one splinter at a time. Inspired by NPR’s Car 76 | Do It at Cotuit

Talk show, Larry and John take callers and offer tips on projects with their own blend of humor and frank advice. If you haven’t heard The Handyman Hotline, you can tune in to 95.1FM (or listen from anywhere on the iHeart app) on Saturdays from 1-3pm. Before the Hotline, Larry got his start in radio on WMVY in the mid-90s and moved on to Cool 102 and has been a staple in people’s living rooms, workplaces, and car radios for over two decades on the Cape. Larry can also be found calling playby-play weekly on WEEI (Cape Cod) for the Cape Cod Baseball League, and he’s producer and now the host of the Falmouth Road Race broadcast for more than 17 years. He knows about more than siding your house. He’s a sports enthusiast who started his career on college radio calling sports games for the University of Rhode Island. Nowadays, he exercises his throaty voice on another microphone as well. As a lifelong storyteller, he can be found participating in competitive Story Slams produced by Cape Cod Media Center, and he has graced the stage here at the Center in such staged readings as Christmas in Connecticut and The Quiet Man. And as if that weren’t enough, he has a cocktail named after him called the Dirty Larry (gin & tonic & ginger ale). This is one well-rounded guy. Cori’s line of communications is more face-to-face. She is a networker and as an Ambassador of Cotuit Center

for the Arts’ Membership Committee she has probably asked you if you are a member once or twice. Cori’s first job on the Cape was with Pierce-Cote’ Advertising and then the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce. In both roles she met people and connected them to something. She is delightfully engaging and knows everyone. In her free time, both she and Larry contribute to Edible Cape Cod. Cori takes photographs and Larry writes feature articles, sometimes in unison and often not. This article wouldn’t be complete without one last teeny little thing about Larry. He’s a veteran of David Letterman’s Stupid Human Tricks. For real. Larry has an impressively outlandish trick too. It seems he can roll himself up into a fold-up sofa bed

and then stay in it while others fold up the couch, sit down and presumably drink a couple of Dirty Larrys. This is largely unimaginable given that Larry is six foot five. Cori explains that everywhere they go, people often stand next to Larry, but it’s not always because of his rapturous personality but because he’s easy to find in a crowd. I’m with Larry is a thing people like to say. For all sorts of reasons. So the next time you are at Wine and Music or a concert or a play, look for Cori and Larry. He’ll be easy to spot although Cori will most likely find you first. Give them a few seconds of your time, and you will find out what we love so much about our Cape Cod friends. -TRACY LABONTE Do It at Cotuit | 77

Volunteer Spotlight

Aurora and Frank Winters Aurora and Frank Winters are part of the Cotuit Center for the Arts family – and they think it’s a great family to belong to. They are about as involved here as anyone can be: as volunteers, members, and artists. They also support CCftA by attending as many performances and events as they possibly can – Entertainment Tonight is one of their favorite fun events!

Michelle Law and Executive Director David Kuehn.

After that introduction, the Winters quickly became part of our incredible network of volunteers. Aurora first pitched in as a docent for children’s gallery tours. Now, if you are at an event that features delicious refreshments, you will see Aurora hard at work with the rest of our Hospitality Committee. Frank serves on our Frank is a retired IT executive; Aurora Curatorial Committee, selecting the is a retired teacher. Aurora says, “Although we knew Center’s galleries and other exhibits across the Cape. They sum up their a lot about the Cape when we moved experience as volunteers like this: here in 2012, we didn’t know anyone “We think of CCftA as not just another who lived here year round. Getting home, but as our ‘second church,’ for involved in the Center and feeling it truly does feed our souls. As with so welcomed and embraced, helped to make the Cape feel like home.” so many volunteer experiences, you usually get back more than you give. “ The Winters’ involvement with CCftA started with artists’ talks at the Center, - MARGEAUX WEBER where they first met Gallery Manager Do It at Cotuit | 79

Sponsor Spotlight

Cape Cod Package Store

Family-owned business Cape Cod Package Store has been a long-time sponsor of the Center. We spoke to Danette Atsalis (who co-owns Cape Cod Package Store with her two sisters) about the store’s history and why they love to support the arts. CC: Tell me some of the most interesting tidbits about the history of Cape Cod Package Store. DA: Cape Cod Package Store was one of the first liquor licenses issued after Prohibition. Now, as a third generation family-owned business, we are thrilled to be celebrating our 80th Anniversary! The ‘Package Store’ part of our name came from a legal requirement that all purchased alcohol was to be placed in brown paper bags since drinking in public was against the law. CC: What about owning CCPS do you find most rewarding? DA: Our business is built on relationships; with our customers, our staff, our vendors & distributors, and our community. These relationships are the cornerstone of our everyday operations.

CC: How does CCPS try to give back to the community? DA: As corporate members of the local chambers as well as industry organizations, we believe that networking and engaging with others keeps us abreast of the developments in the community and allows us to show our support for one another. We also support many local non-profit organizations, libraries, and galleries. CC: What do you enjoy most about Cotuit Center for the Arts? DA: The Center allows everyone to explore their own creativity through fun workshops and classes in all facets from art to music to theater. We are so lucky to have this opportunity to express our gratitude for the hard work and commitment of the staff, volunteers, and financial supporters of Cotuit Center for the Arts. A true gem in our local neighborhood!
