Letter from the President Hello and welcome to Cotuit Center for the Arts!

The first half of 2018 has been a whirlwind. Ever since we bought the gas station and bakery properties, the weeks have been filled with meetings about fundraising, imaginings about what the future campus will look like, discussions with experts about tank removal and environmental regulations, talks about landscaping our 600 feet of frontage on Route 28 and improving our entrance lighting, and fundraising, fundraising, fundraising. David always has a full calendar, but he has somehow magically managed to squeeze more into his already-packed days and weeks as he leads these efforts.

My favorite part of the past few months has been the public information sessions we held in February. So many of you joined us for updates on our fundraising, plans for the tank removal, and what we hope to complete before summer in terms of landscaping and beautification of the properties. The energy you brought to the sessions was palpable, your enthusiasm contagious, and your ideas were big and bold. Your commitment to our Center and belief in our mission was so gratifying. I know the Center’s future will be brilliant with your support.

Enjoy your time here whether you spend it seeing a play in one of our theaters, attending a concert or gallery show, or taking one of our many, many classes. I truly believe that you are in the very best and busiest arts center on Cape Cod. And please, keep those ideas and comments coming — you are a crucial part of the Center’s future — we can’t IMAGINE it without you!

Greetings!

Fill ‘er up!

It’s a very exciting time for the Center having recently expanded our acreage. The possibilities for future expansion are extremely exciting and we will continue to keep you, our patrons, donors, volunteers, neighbors, and friends in the conversation. We are also in the middle of an outstanding season of programming following smash hit productions of “A Few Good Men” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” We also have incredible local, regional

and internationally acclaimed singers and musicians on our stage, dozens of new workshops and classes, and some fantastic productions coming up in the Black Box. The centerpiece of the summer programming is our production of “Man of LaMancha” which features the iconic “Impossible Dream.”

I’ve been thinking a lot about impossible dreams lately – as I mentioned we are planning ours as I write this note. And I’ve been reflecting on what we offer the community – how broad and bold our mission is – and the role we play with many of the kids in our community. A recent bunch of high schoolers who have worked for years acting, singing, working in the box office, interning, learning how to run lights and sound, working as stage crew on theater productions, etc, are on their way to Berklee, Tisch/ NYU, BU, Columbia, UMASS, Emerson, and many other schools. That got me thinking about all our “Annie” orphans and kids who participate in our summer theater and visual arts programs who are also on that journey.

And that got me thinking about the dozens of high school-aged kids with a national platform. Who stand in front of millions of people demanding change. Demanding integrity, honesty, compassion, and are courageously taking their future into their own hands. And most of these kids, if not all, are theater kids. They participate in their music, theater, and arts programs.

They work in their own community theaters. And we have those kids right here. I am humbled by the fact that we, Cotuit Center for the Arts, play a role in preparing kids to be compassionate leaders. I hope we have given them a few additional tools and have taught them well. I also believe they are giving us tools and teaching us well. I certainly know that’s the case for me.

2018 SUMMER/FALL EDUCATION Hello from the Schoolhouse! I am thrilled to tell you about my new office – and CapeCodCAN’s new office – and our new Meeting Room – and our new Classroom – and our new Gallery – in the refurbished house at the “end of the path” near the Admin building. We moved in in the spring after some critical renovations last year (the installation of a wheelchair ramp and handicapped-accessible bathroom, to name a couple), generously funded by the Bilezikian Family Foundation, and classes have already begun! Photography, Printmaking, and Theater classes will all be held in the new space, as well as rehearsals, meetings, and small events.

The warm and inviting classroom can accommodate up to 20 students and provides desperately needed space for our expanding educational program. The three-season porch has been converted into the Sunporch Gallery and will feature small works on view and for sale by CapeCodCAN artists. I am delighted to occupy the Schoolhouse at last and invite you to visit – my office door is always open, I have a pair of comfy wicker chairs, and I make a fine cup of tea. Come and tell me about a class you’d like to take – or a workshop you want to teach – or a grant you’d like us to pursue – or some community outreach you want to help me with. I can’t do it at Cotuit without your help and input, especially with all the exciting things in store for the Center – come to the Schoolhouse and let’s IMAGINE the future together!

NEW, BROAD CURRICULUM OF DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CLASSES ROLLS OUT AT CCFTA

Keep your eyes peeled! Cotuit Center for the Arts is rolling out a great, new digital photography curriculum this year, all housed in our newly renovated classroom space in the Schoolhouse. Featuring a broad array of daytime and evening digital photography classes and workshops led by noted Cape Cod photographers and photo instructors, our curriculum will cover just about everything you need to know about taking better pictures with your digital camera, cell phone, or tablet to learning how to “develop” them in the digital “darkroom” on your own computer.

Our photography curriculum launched earlier this year with Introduction to the Digital Darkroom, quickly followed by Digital Photography 101, covering the basics of taking better pictures with your camera, cellphone, or tablet. Led by award-winning photographer Susan Simon,

Digital Photography 101 will teach you how to make the most of your camera’s controls and how they interrelate as well as the settings you need to know for consistently good exposures and compositions. Digital Photography 101 will be a mainstay of the curriculum and will repeat regularly throughout the year, starting this summer.

Adobe Lightroom Classic CC and Adobe Photoshop are two of the mostused photo management and editing programs in the world. Learn to use both programs effectively with juried master photographer Bob Singer in our Learn Adobe Lightroom Classic CC class this fall! Bob has earned hundreds of awards for his images in competitions, exhibitions, and international salons, and is the driving force behind the Center’s photography program. You’ll advance from novice to intermediate skill levels and beyond under his expert guidance all the way.

Marilyn Rowland spoke with director Joan Baird about putting it all together and her history with this very special show.

Inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ seventeenth-century masterpiece, “Don Quixote,” “Man of La Mancha” debuted on Broadway in 1965, won five Tony Awards, including Best Play, and became one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history. celebrates the perseverance of an old man who refuses to relinquish his ideals or his passion.

The score, by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion, includes such beloved songs as “The Impossible Dream,” “I, Don Quixote,” “Dulcinea,” “I Really Like Him,” “Little Bird,” and “To Each His Own Dulcinea.”

“The show’s message is still very relevant today,” said Baird. “It has been performed all over the world and still has great power to move people.”

And one of the very nice things about this cast is that they are all team players, and that makes for a really good show.”

“Little Bird” is sung by the muleteers. “It is a very beautiful song, very simple, sung by these rough guys, very moving,” said Baird. “‘To Each His Dulcinea,’ sung by the padre, is just haunting.”

“Man of La Mancha” is a play-within-a-play, performed by Cervantes, a failed author-soldieractor and tax collector, and his fellow prisoners as he awaits trial by the Spanish Inquisition for foreclosing on a monastery. Cervantes transforms himself into Alonso Quijano, who imagines himself to be Don Quixote, a knighterrant who sets out to find adventure and to right the injustices of the world.

There are no elaborate costumes or sets for “Man of La Mancha.” All the action takes place in a dungeon, with props pulled, for the most part, from Cervantes’ large trunk. “It’s a very tight show. Scene changes are done through lighting and imagination,” said Baird. “The intimate Cotuit Center for the Arts stage is just perfect for this play, bringing the audience right into the story. It is very much like the semicircular space where the show was originally produced.

“The music is gorgeous,” said Baird. “It is done with a little bit of a Spanish flair. Of course, everyone knows ‘The Impossible Dream,’ but there are a lot of other great songs too, like ‘I’m Only Thinking of Him,’ sung by the niece (Hannah Wolfe), the housekeeper (Treather

“Man of La Mancha” has particular relevance for Baird. It is the first play she ever appeared in, back when she was in high school. “You’d never know it now,” she said, “but I was very, very bashful. I was a singer—my mom was an opera singer, so I followed in her footsteps, but was soon drawn to musical theater.

“I was very nervous about auditioning for the role of Antonia, Don Quixote’s niece.

Coincidently, the daughter of my father’s boss was part of the second or third cast in the New York production, playing the same role. My dad’s boss had her call me, and she gave me the courage I needed. I got the part and I was forever hooked.”

Baird has been acting and directing ever since.

She is on the board of the Falmouth Theater Guild, where she just finished directing a very successful production of “The Producers.” She is passionate about the ability of theater to change people’s lives.

We are very excited to be collaborating again this year with the Cape Symphony. Last year we co-produced “Every Good Boy Deserves Favor,” a provocative and rarely performed piece for full symphony orchestra and six actors with music by André Previn and book by Tom Stoppard. When I first met Jung-Ho Pak, music director of the symphony, he told me of a piece on his bucket list.

Though I had spent 25 years in the classical music recording business and thought I commanded an extensive knowledge of classical repertoire, I had never heard of this work even though it was created by two of the biggest icons of musical composition and theatrical playwriting. Flash forward a few years and our dream of working together for the first time came true. We

assembled a great team to work on the theater part of the piece led by director Mary Arnault who has directed many theater productions on the Cotuit stage including “Souvenir,” “One Man, Two Guvnors,” “33 Variations,” “Quills,” and many others. Andrew Arnault came on board to design a set that would work for both the actors and the full orchestra.

Costume designer Alan Trugman and lighting designer Greg Hamm also joined the team. We then cast six amazing actors from our community: Troy Davies, Rob Anderson, Cleo Zani, Susan Winslow, Garry Mitchell, and Tyler Brackett. The result was magic.

Audiences loved the performances and Jung-Ho and I were thrilled to be able to present challenging, rare, thought-provoking work.

So I couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that Cotuit Center for the Arts will be working on TWO upcoming concerts with the Symphony in their 2018/19 season. The first is a powerful work by composer Peter Boyers entitled “Ellis Island: The Dream of America.” It traces the experiences of seven immigrants from seven countries on their way to America, using monologues from actors with underscoring and interludes. The texts are taken directly from recordings made for the Ellis Island Oral History Project.

For this concert, we have engaged Nina Schuessler, Executive Director of the Cape Cod Theater Company, home of Harwich Junior Theatre, to direct the actors. “Ellis Island” will open the Symphony’s season with performances scheduled for September 22 & 23.

Then, in February, Cotuit Center for the Arts and the Cape Symphony will be

working with director Michele Colley who has also directed many productions on our stage, including “Pirates of Penzance,” “Spamalot,” “Oklahoma,” “Anything Goes,” and many others. We will be presenting a concert performance of “The Wizard of Oz,” with the symphony performing the lush Harold Arlen score as local talent tapped from all across the Cape transports the audiences to the wonderful land of Oz. We are putting the team and the pieces together now so stay tuned for more info. “The Wizard of Oz” performances will take place on February 9 & 10 with two matinees, perfect for bringing the whole family!

This program not only introduces patrons and guests to CapeCodCAN members but provides opportunity for building skills that may be transferrable for future vocational endeavors. Most importantly, CapeCodCAN members become welcomed contributors to an organization they already enjoy and have a fondness for.

INTERN C O R N E R The Development Department of CCftA

My name is Rachel Corliss, and I am an intern for the Development Department at Cotuit Center for the Arts. In addition to working with Development, I spend a lot of time performing in shows! I was recently in “Sunday in the Park with George” and “Jesus Christ Superstar.” I love being a part of the Development Department which is where the magic happens behind planning events and holding fundraisers.

We work our hardest to make all of the future dreams of the Center a reality. To really get a view of this department, you need to meet the people that work within it.

The Department has a total of three interns. Nick Bucchianeri is a senior at Sturgis Public Charter School and has worked at the Center for four years. Nick started as a stagehand and recently starred in the award-winning show, “Lines in the Sand.” When he is not in Development, you can find him working at the Center’s Box Office. Sadie LaBonte is our third intern. She works with the Development Department in the summer, and she has been a stagehand and lighting person for many shows. She most recently ran spotlight for “Jesus Christ Superstar,” and had a singing part in “Now: A Tribute to Karen Carpenter.”

The Director of Development is Tracy LaBonte. She is often around the Center during shows and always has the brightest smile on her face. Even when the fundraising workload is quite large and stressful she keeps a level

head. She works towards the main goal of the department: expanding the Center and putting on the best events. Lauren Fogle works with Tracy as the Development Associate. Lauren came on board in 2017, and is always ready for the unexpected (which happens a lot in Development). Lauren tries her hardest to dedicate time to every person who needs her support (including me). We also have our newest member, our Development Assistant Kim Zaniboni. Kim recently moved to the Cape from the MidWest and is excited to be a part of such a great project. She is the person who prints and mails all of the letters you receive for your memberships and donations.

It has been a great experience for me to be a part of this team at such an exciting time. If I were to describe a day working here in one word it would be “unpredictable.” You never

know what to expect when you walk into this office! One day I walked in and they told me we would be working on a fundraiser. The next day I walked in and they told me, “Hey! We bought a gas station!” I remember being surprised by that. I thought, “Cotuit Center for the Arts: not only do we put on shows, we also sell gas!” Obviously, we aren’t actually selling gas, but we are expanding our campus. Cotuit Center for the Arts has started to close the gap and is launching the IMAGINE campaign.

We are hoping that with all of your support towards our campaign we will be able to dig up the gas tanks, renovate the buildings, and make this the best place to spend your time in a safe, fun, and creative manner. We believe that art is for everyone, and here in the Development Department of CCftA, we are working hard to make that a reality.

Attorney Michael Princi is a busy man. As a senior partner at the Hyannis office of the Wynn and Wynn law firm, a position he has held since 1990, he spends many working hours involved in complex civil litigation with a focus on personal injury, business and general litigation, and transactional law. Despite this significant workload, he is also now celebrating four years as an active Board Member at the Cotuit Center for the Arts.

The fact that Michael can accomplish both tasks should come as no surprise to those who have had the opportunity to meet and work with him.

His commitment and dedication to service is well known across the many civic and charitable organizations he supports, whether as a member of the Barnstable School Committee, a board member of the Cape Cod YMCA, or as a major sponsor of programs to provide affordable housing and shelter for the homeless.

It was actually through this latter effort that Michael first met our former (and legendary) CCftA Vice President, Pat Hurton, who helped convince him to become a member of our Board.

Combining his lifelong appreciation of the arts

introduction to the arts included participation in the band and chorus in high school and occasional trips to Boston and New York to attend theater events. After high school, he attended Bowdoin College, where he earned his B.A. in Government.

During one summer, he worked at the Melody Tent where each week a new musical was presented. In 1969, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the US Navy and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Following active duty, he remained in the Naval Reserves and attended Northeastern School of Law, where he earned his J.D. in 1975.

Settling into private practice that year in West Barnstable, where he raised his family, he eventually was recruited by the Air National Guard at Otis and changed uniform, becoming Staff Judge Advocate and Senior Legal Counsel.

In these roles, he lectured extensively and often had the opportunity to meet with other officers at the Pentagon in Washington, where he fell in love with the city. He proudly continued his reserve service to the military until 1999, when he retired from the Reserves as a full Colonel.

In 1993, working at Wynn and Wynn and then a widower with three sons, Michael remarried to his beautiful wife Area, who had three children of her own, “the Brady Bunch.” Their blended family of six children has now expanded to 12 grandchildren. The interest in the arts now continues to the next generation with one son, Brendan, performing locally as a musician and a second family member an active manager, performer, and instructor at the Improv Asylum comedy performance and training center in Boston (where our beloved Melinda Gallant trained). Meanwhile, Michael and Area continue to enjoy the artistic energy and excitement that happens every day at Cotuit Center for the Arts.

Carolyn Ferrell

One of the major goals of our Publicity team last year was to expand our messaging exponentially across the social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and to do so in a consistent manner. To accomplish this task, we needed an individual who was both creative and well-versed in social media skills. Enter Carolyn Ferrell, a recent retiree and “washashore” who just happened to be perfect for this activity.

In her new home on Cape Cod, Carolyn had been looking for an opportunity to volunteer where she could effectively contribute to the local arts community and make a difference. Taking on the challenge at CCftA was a natural fit. Using Instagram as a baseline, she has generated over 300 postings in the past year and has grown our number of followers to over 1,000. Working with other volunteers and staff, she has provided a consistent and powerful message across all our social media platforms. In addition to linking with our Facebook and Twitter sites, Carolyn utilizes her photography skills to capture scenes and activities at the Center for use in future posts. With her extensive background in the arts as well as technology, Carolyn continues to provide valuable contributions to CCftA on a daily basis.

Originally from Bergen County, New Jersey, Carolyn graduated from Rutgers University with a B.S. in Biology. However, the love of the arts eventually took her to a position with the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where she specialized in administrative/ financial management roles with a primary focus on backstage operations. This also included managing the annual Met in the Park summer programs in the city. After a 30-year career at the Met, she retired in 2014, but still manages to return to New York every summer to manage what is now the New York Philharmonic in the Park program.

Carolyn and her husband, Bruce Calabro, moved to Cape Cod in 2015. They also have a 22-year-old son, Max, who is still working and studying in New York. Carolyn now spends her limited spare time self-employed as a glass jewelry artist, utilizing lampworking, at the classic 1889 home in the Hyannis historic district where she and Bruce live with their two rescue chihuahuas. Her designs can be seen on www.gracefulfire.com and at the HyArts Shanties at Hyannis Harbor during the summer where she will also show some of her paintings.

Carolyn is also a fan of Steampunk, a fashion genre where artists design clothing and headgear that links Victorian style with sci-fi/fantasy concepts.

Perhaps there might even be a Steampunk showing at this year’s Arts and Souls Masquerade Ball at Cotuit.

Elena Pine How long have you been volunteering at the Center?

I have been volunteering at the center for over two years now. We moved to Centerville full-time from Boston two and a half years ago. We have been coming to the theater for a long time and loved it.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I worked in the fashion industry in Boston for many years and then for the last 17 years at the Boston Design Center (interior design).

Moving to the Cape was a big thing, and not working full-time was a big challenge at first.

The idea at doing something at the theater that might be of any help totally appealed to me.

How did you first get involved?

I met Beth Golden at the theater and since I knew her from the Design Center in Boston, she gave me a lot of information about what volunteers can get involved with, and that was very helpful.

I thought that if I can be of any help in the costume shop, that will be the best place for me to be. I met Amy Canaday and got involved in the projects she worked on.

Tell us about some of the projects you’ve worked on.

I assisted Amy by working on Sunday in the Park with George, Annie, and A Few Good Men – I was involved in helping out with

the other volunteers on whatever needed to be done, from sewing patches and buttons, to pressing clothes. It is all for the good of the theater and people who work there and work so, so hard trying to make it better. I so admire it.

We also worked on the big project of moving all the costumes from the off-site storage. It worked out well – we had a big costume sale that was very successful. All in all, it makes you feel good when you participate and give your time to something you enjoy doing.

I find that people who work at the theater are amazing, and all volunteers should be thrilled to do their part whenever they can and help this fabulous place to keep on going and moving forward with new projects in the future.
