Welcome to Cotuit Center for the Arts! And thanks for being here. 2015 has been a great year of programming at the Center. The theatrical productions, concerts, special events, and educational offerings just keep getting better and better and I am continuously impressed with the incredible talent in our community. As each year comes to a close all nonprofit organizations embark on year-end appeals; we remind our patrons of the need for additional financial support hoping to find new and clever ways to grab your attention. This year my fundraising pitch has revolved primarily around the theme of “Blah, Blah, Blah” – and it resonated with many of you… THANKS! It’s also important to me that you know how seriously we value your support and how diligently we work to stretch every

dollar we receive – through matching funding opportunities, use of donated materials and labor, and well over 10,000+ hours of support we are so fortunate to receive each year from our amazing volunteer pool. The messaging of our need can be tricky business because we have been successful at presenting some of the highest quality productions, gallery exhibits, and arts education classes found anywhere to increasingly full houses and classrooms. You are reading an impressive, glossy magazine which is produced only 3 times per year and actually costs less than printing programs and newsletters on our own copier, thanks to great local business partners like Smith Print. I’m proud of our quality, and we do it all on a shoestring. We all do -- our collaborators in the arts community of Cape Cod. And we all need your support, as members, donors, volunteers, sponsors. And this Halloween don’t forget to put us in your will! As

I’ve said before, we are one of the best investments you’ll find. One of the collaborations we’ve enjoyed over the past several years includes the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, Cape Conservatory, Wellfleet Preservation Hall, and Cotuit Center for the Arts, presenting free recitals throughout the year in our four venues. Lauren Wolk, Janet Lesniak, Stephanie Weaver and I meet regularly not only to plan this important series, but to talk about our general businesses, and we all share the sentiments above. I recently received an email from my friend Bob Nash at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod that so eloquently illustrated the challenges we face in making sure our patrons and donors know we are good stewards. His words about need for support at the Cultural Center resonated so deeply I asked his permission to quote: “…sometimes people pay more attention to how we look than to what we do, and

they decide that we don’t need support... Actually, we do need support, for many reasons, all of them good but some of them boring…Payroll and electric bills and maintenance aren’t terribly sexy to donors, but they’re terribly important to our capacity to serve.” I couldn’t agree more. And we are grateful for every donation and contribution that comes our way. OK, by now you’re probably thinking “Blah, Blah, Blah, David – I’ve heard this all before”. So I’ll remind you that when you start to hear the Blah Blah Blah in your head, it’s just that little trigger reminding you to make an additional contribution in any amount. It will make you feel so good. And it will ensure that we are here for years to come to make you feel good every time you visit. Thanks again, and enjoy the show! David Kuehn Executive Director

2015 THEATER SEASON

Mainstage THE BEAT GOES ON

one flew over the cuckoo’s nest

a musical revue conceived by Ruth Condon Price February 12-22

by Dale Wasserman April 14-26

A tribute to the music of the 60s from the creative team behind 2014’s smash hit “What the World Needs Now: A Musical Tribute to Burt Bacharach.” You won’t want to miss this nostalgic production featuring some of the Cape’s best voices.

Tyrannical Nurse Ratched rules her psychiatric ward with an iron fist and a penchant for electro-shock therapy. Into her ordered domain enters the boisterous Randle P. McMurphy, intent on disruption and showing the other patients a good time. A titanic battle of wills emerges. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest explores the boundaries between conformity and individuality, sanity and madness with a devastating effect.

GYPSY music by Jule Styne lyrics by Stephen Sondheim book by Arthur Laurents July 7 - August 2 A musical extravaganza featuring some of the bestloved music in the entire American musical theater songbook. Join Rose, June, and Louise in their trip across the United States during the Twenties, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born. Jule Styne’s music and Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics include Let Me Entertain You, Some People, You’ll Never Get Away from Me, If Momma Was Married, All I Need Is the Girl, Everything’s Coming Up Roses, You Gotta Get A Gimmick and Together Wherever We Go.

THE pirates of penzance by Gilbert & Sullivan September 29 - October 18 Swashbuckling musical comedy to be presented with a twist that audiences have come to expect from Cotuit Center for the Arrrrrrrrts! This production is your chance to get carried away by Pirates! Join the band of boisterous buccaneers, bumbling British bobbies, frolicsome Victorian maidens, and the delightfully dotty “model of a modern Major-General” for a rollicking romp over the rocky coast of Cornwall. A frothy, fanciful Gilbert & Sullivan musical sure to entertain the whole family.

The best christmas pageant ever by Barbara Robinson November 17 - December 20 Everyone agreed that the six Herdman kids were the worst kids in the world. They lied, they stole, they hit little kids, they talked dirty, and even the girls smoked cigars. Wait till you see what happens when they decide to take part in the annual Christmas pageant! Mark your calendars for a hilarious and heart-warming Holiday show for the whole family.

COME BE A PART OF THE ACT! We invite local singers, actors, or other volunteer performers to “try out” for the roles in our live stage shows. We regularly hold open-call auditions, and have an email bulletin that can keep you posted on auditions and other theatrical volunteer opportunities. You can sign up at our website artsonthecape.org, or email info@cotuitcenterforthearts.org for more information. In addition to actors, we always need help with set building, costume construction, backstage help, lighting, and sound operators. Come be a part of the magic of live theater at Cotuit!

Theater Spotlight

Producer Christine Ernst is excited about The Pirates of Penzance on the mainstage this fall. “We did a play in 2008 called Sullivan and Gilbert, which had some music in it, and we did a G&S review, but this is the first time we’ve mounted a straight-up Gilbert and Sullivan operetta,” Ernst enthuses.

16

“I’ve loved the genre since I was a kid – witty, silly, timeless, musically sublime, with a wacky plot and and a score that is totally singable – I hope we do more.” She is working with Michele Colley, director and choreographer, and Norma Atwood, musical director, to bring the show

to the Center’s stage. “We have a particularly strong cast assembled – great voices and really fine comic actors. It’s a delightful romp filled with saucy maidens, tenderhearted pirates, and goofy cops. My husband Michael gets to play the Pirate King, and our own Daniel Fontneau plays the Major General. I can’t wait!” Pirates premiered in New York in 1879 (the only G&S work to premiere in the US) and was an instant hit with audiences and critics, and remains a mainstay of community and professional theaters worldwide. The plot centers around Frederic, accidentally apprenticed by his dim nursemaid to a band of pirates. Upon completion of his apprenticeship at 21, Frederic falls in love with Mabel, daughter of Major General Stanley, but soon realizes that there is a glitch in his contract – he was born on February 29 in a leap year, and must serve his indenture until his 21st birthday, which, by the Pirate King’s math, won’t occur for another 63 years. Frederic is torn by his sense of duty and his love for Mabel. Silliness ensues. Glorious music ensues.

everyone knows – without knowing where they are from – they will walk away humming. I want everyone to feel like they are part of this show.” Ernst agrees and adds, “And the show is in the public domain, so it’s essentially royalty-free – a huge savings for a non-profit community theater. I’ll raise a glass of pirate sherry to that any day.”

The Pirates of Penzance September 29-October 18 get your tickets at ArtsOnTheCape.org today!

Director Colley loves the show for its froth and humor – which are as funny and relevant today as 136 years ago. “It’s beautiful music,” she says, “with witty humor and waggish fun! I think this piece will appeal to a wide range of audiences. There are several tunes in this operetta that most

Music/Special Event Spotlight

4th Annual

Ukulele Celebration This year, CCftA will present the 4th annual Ukulele Celebration, on October 25. This is an event unlike any other presented at the Center. Led by Steve Gregory, one of the most enthusiastic teachers ever to present a program here, this year’s Ukulele Celebration breaks new ground by having thematic material derived from Pop music of the ‘80s. You’ll hear songs from the likes of The Police, Michael Jackson, U2, and others. Like previous programs, the excitement and joy of performers of all ages will be evident as

article by David M. Cohen

30

they radiate in the essence of the ukulele: sharing their infectious love of music! Steve Gregory studied classical guitar at Rhode Island College and then jazz and composition at Berkeley College of Music. But something about his

studies left him unfulfilled. He rediscovered the joy of music in the innocence and direct communication uniquely apparent in ukulele playing. According to Steve, there is nothing that can compare with the fun shared by a group of ukulele performers all connected via the same song. There’s magic in seeing and hearing a group of people playing chords and melodies and singing together as they float on the waves of the song. Essentially, this music is like folk music in that it is intended to be a shared experience between performers and listeners. It’s not about raising one or two performers on a pedestal for admiration, but rather sharing the infectious essence of each song with everyone in the room.

Spreading the joy of the celebration will be The Dolphin Ukulele Ensemble, a children’s ukulele group founded and directed by South Yarmouth kindergarten teacher Susan Anarino; The Cape Cod Ukeladies, comprised of an eclectic group of musicians and joy seekers; CCftA All Stars, some of the best players from CCftA’s Intermediate Ukulele class; and, of course, Steve Gregory, his wife, Joni, and daughter, Vanessa. General admission to the celebration is $15, or you can come for free if you bring your ukulele and join the performance. In case you miss this annual event, classes are ongoing at the Center and newcomers are always welcomed to come and share the fun and joy of making ukulele music.

The four-week residency includes use of the CCftA Art Studio and Annex when space is available. There will be one residency offered during the summer 2016. Residency fees are a flat rate of $500/week* for an individual room in the main house with a shared

kitchen and bathroom, or $875/ week* for a cottage for an individual or couple. There are two cottages on the rural housing campus located in picturesque Osterville, about five miles from CCftA. It’s within walking distance to the quaint center of town and is situated on a pond surrounded by walking paths. The beach is in proximity. Artists will be responsible for their own transportation and food. There is a $35 non-refundable application fee to apply. Applicants are required to fill out an application form and submit work samples, a statement of intent, and one professional letter of reference. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Artistic excellence and promise is the primary criterion for acceptance into the program. Applications will be reviewed by a panel comprised of CCftA faculty and staff and a jury of experts in the artists’ related field. Finalists will be interviewed by phone or in person. For more information, contact Alex Speck, Director of Arts Education: Alexandra@cotuitcenterforthearts.org. An online application is available at ArtsOnTheCape.org. *An artist’s stipend may become available provided grant funding.

ArtSynergies In the Gallery at Cotuit Center for the Arts, eight members of ArtSynergies present Exposure: Beneath the Layers. The exhibition theme with its varied definitions inspires the collaborative group to identify a meaningful response from introspective to environmental interpretations. Works range from abstract to representational, surrealistic to playful and include both two-dimensional and threedimensional pieces. Processes include photo transfers, cyanotype, encaustic, photography, and various types of printmaking methods. All ArtSynergies artists combine computer technology with traditional media. Mary Doering, Barbara Ford Doyle, and Martine Jore formed ArtSynergies in 2006. At the time, feeling isolated working in a creative medium not generally recognized by other artists, they met regularly to share information about digital image-making and computer technology. In 2008, they organized a group show,

In 2013, they curated an invitational exhibit, Interplay: Mixed Media Digital Art of twenty-one artists at Cotuit Center for the Arts. In 2013, five more artists joined the group – Lee ConnollyWeill, Amy Heller, Sara David Ringler, Alan Trugman, and Joyce Gardner Zavorskas. In 2014 all eight members exhibited in a show titled Printmaking Invitational: Alternative Processes at Cape Cod Community College. ArtSynergies continues to grow and explore media and the process of making art. Letter from The Board President Blah blah blah... Community nonprofit corporations such as the Cotuit Center for the Arts rely on many forms of charitable giving such as memberships, individual donations, annual appeal contributions, business sponsorship, grants and planned giving pledges. We at the center have put a lot of focus on the first five types of giving as we depend on these to operate on a day to day basis. Literally without them, we wouldn’t be here today. The last category – that of estate planned gifts, falls into a different category ensuring that we will be here for the long run and as a maturing organization that is becoming more and more important. The center has a small endowment maintained by the Cape Cod Foundation. That organization invests the funds with focus on long term growth. While the center currently receives a small annual grant from the fund to be used for the general maintenance of the building and grounds, the goal is to build this endowment fund over time. And so this last year we codified our planned giving program putting together a very nice pamphlet on how your donation can help the center in the long run. Now, planned giving is not an easy topic to talk about. Few people enjoy talking about donations – even fewer about death planning. So we decided to come up with a catchy phrase to help break the ice. And I think it’s quite good: We want you to live forever. In case you don’t please include us in your will. We came up with a few others that didn’t make the cut, but it being the fall and since good taste is thrown out the window around Halloween, I thought I would share some of those that for various reasons we decided not to use: • • • • • • • • •

Don’t let death get you down. Feel good by donating to the center. What kids? Give it to the Center. Feeling unlucky? You need good estate planning. If you die without including us in your will, you’ll be sorry. Give your grandkids a better future. Leave a legacy gift to the center. You can’t take it with you, so leave it with us. Hear that bus coming? Don’t forget to put us in your will. Your kids will just waste it anyway. Donate it to the center to be put to better use. There’s only three certainties in life – death, taxes and the Center. When you die, avoid taxes by giving to the Center.

Actually I kind of like that last one. Please join me by joining our Living Arts Society by remembering us in your will. We hope you live forever, but in case you don’t blah blah blah. Sincerely, Jim Hoeck President, Cotuit Center for the Arts

Taking

the Lead in Arts Education article by Dale Silva

70

Arts Education at Cotuit is an expanding program that now reaches across the full range of the creative experience. CCftA offers classes in painting, sculpture, acting, singing, dance, music, and writing, among others. In addition, the Center collaborates with the Cape Cod community through a variety of outreach projects, such as The Key Idea, classes for incarcerated youth, and self-awareness and bullying prevention, to name just a few. With each new season comes even more new ideas and creativity that drives the expansion of these classes and projects to an even higher level. Managing and promoting this continuing expansion is the challenge now facing the new Director of Arts Education, Alexandra Speck. Alex joined the Center in April and has already had a major impact on the Arts Education program. One needs only to review the current fall class brochure to see that there are now 34 different classes, 15 of which are being offered for the first time. This expansion includes eight new teachers, who will enhance the learning experience and cross-pollinate education programming with that in the theater and the art gallery. One example of this increased collaboration is the Stagecraft and Set Design class, taught by Richard Neal, where students will learn the process of reading a script and creating an appropriate set design. Potentially, one of these designs could ultimately be applied to the Center’s main stage in a future production. Another class, Makeup and Hair for the Stage & Beyond, taught by Tom Crutchfield, will demonstrate how to create a variety of looks, from Victorian to contemporary, which can be transferred directly to the stage. Other new educational offerings include classes in oil painting, burlesque, barre, and Young Adult (YA) fiction writing. There are even classes designed for parents and toddlers, such as Creative Movement, where parents and caregivers explore ways to enhance creative skills in young children. Following upon these new offerings, Alex is continuing to evaluate the scope of all

71

educational programs at the Center, searching for new and innovative ways to foster growth and expansion. One of these ways is through the new Artist-in-Residence program she developed that is now accepting applications for May 2016. The program will provide housing for up to six artists this summer in the literary, visual, and performing arts, as well as mentoring and use of the Center’s facilities. Alex’s long-term goal is to bring broader recognition to CCftA as a hub for artistic excellence and training both regionally and nationally. For this challenging assignment, Alex brings a wealth of knowledge and experience across many disciplines. Upon graduation from Columbia University with a B.A. in English Literature, Alex attended Northwestern University and studied broadcast journalism. She then returned to New York to work as a professional actor and comedienne for seven years. In 2006, Alex relocated Woods Hole, where she had summered growing up. She worked for close to five years as a reporter and on-air correspondent for WCAI, the Cape and Islands NPR station. During this time, she won two prestigious national Edward R. Murrow Awards for her reporting on the Arts and coastal living. She then worked at Falmouth Academy as a Creative Writing teacher and Director of the Middle School Drama Program until 2014. Throughout Alex’s time in the Falmouth, she has developed an extensive network by volunteering and fundraising for several local organizations, including Highfield Hall, The Cape Cod Theatre Project, and Wings for Falmouth Families. The mission of CCftA is “to be a welcoming hub for Cape Cod’s artists, performers, students, and audiences, working together to make the creation and experience of art accessible, nurturing, and thrilling for all.” With such a strong background across all aspects of the creative arts, the new Director of Arts Education, Alexandra Speck, will certainly be a major contributor to the fulfillment of that goal.

COTUIT ON THE

ROAD

Above: Love is Blind: A Tribute to Amy Winehouse

74

The Center has recently announced a few new innovative programs, Cotuit on the Road and Live from Cotuit, both in partnership with Brave Horse Music, founded by Ruth Condon. Ruth has produced many of the Center’s biggest recent successes, including “What the World Needs Now: A Musical Tribute to Burt Bacharach,” “The Beat Goes On,”“Love is Blind: Music Inspired by Amy Winehouse,”“Anthony Teixeira and Friends Sing Tony Bennett Duets,”“The Kami Lyle Sit-A-While,” and “Pretty World” with more projects in development. Some of these productions will hit the road and be presented in Orleans, Dennis, and Sandwich during the Fall of 2015, and the collaboration is currently exploring venues over the bridge in Boston, New York, and points between. Cotuit on the Road will also feature dinner theater performances at the Dan’l Webster Inn & other venues. “The quality of these shows is incredible, and the

75

audience reactions have been among the best we’ve ever had,” says David Kuehn, Executive Director of the Center. “We don’t have enough space in our calendar to repeat productions very often, so when Ruth mentioned the idea of taking a show or two to another venue, it seemed like an incredible opportunity to expand an already strong collaboration.” The other initiative will allow the Center to begin streaming certain events live so that people around the world will be able to enjoy some of the great programming at the Center. The Center plans to stream the Kami Lyle “Sit-A-While” monthly in 2016 for both live video and future radio broadcast. Kami has an impressive array of guests artists lined up to join her next year including Gretchen Peters, Steve Earle, John Sebastian, and Duke Levine. So watch out world, here we come! Keep your eyes and ears open for Cotuit on the Road and Live from Cotuit – in a real or cyber venue near you soon!

Cotuit Some math from Season Producer, Christine Ernst:

Here in the theater, if you amortize the stipend they receive with the actual hours worked… • mainstage directors earn an average of $4.67 cents an hour for their trouble • costume designers earn about $3.78 an hour • stage managers get about $2.91 • spotlight operators and deckhands get $2.27 or so • actors are not paid and contribute approximately 172 volunteer hours each to a mainstage show (to put this in perspective, that’s $1763 in burger flipping hours, $4702 in construction worker or schoolteacher hours, $7542 in professional actor hours, or $25,800 in lawyer hours) • in addition to the actors, each mainstage show averages an additional 420 volunteer hours to build, costume, decorate, paint, and usher Now, in the organization: • 2000 kids and adults will take a class or a workshop here this year • 1300 individuals will perform on our stages • 250 artists will be featured in our galleries • 7000 people will tour our exhibits • 2650 people will participate in our outreach programs • 28,000 people will attend an event here • an average week on campus here at the Center contains 140 hours of programming in our spaces for classes, rehearsals, performances, meetings, and events.

78

by the Numbers All told, 41,000 people will have been served in some way by the Center this year, served by a staff of • just 6 full-time employees (or 7, actually – you should count David twice) • 11 part-time employees • and approximately 100 teachers and production specialists paid per project • plus a small army of volunteers who collectively contribute over 30,000 hours to the Center, which is the equivalent of almost 16 regular full-time employees • and last but not least, a bunch of really hard-working bartenders (who obviously should be tipped more)

Phew. So, clearly, this little 501(c)3 makes the arts accessible, thrilling, and nurturing to all – practically 24/7 – on a shoestring – with a tiny but passionate and committed staff – and a dedicated and amazing and beautiful corps of volunteers. But you, dear patron, make it all possible. We simply can’t do it at Cotuit without you. Please consider becoming part of our future – join this most welcoming hub – contribute, sustain, donate, bequeath, underwrite, support – however you are able to do so.

Do it. For Cotuit. 79

I would imagine most of you reading this article have very specific memories that are conjured when you think of “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “Scarborough Fair” or “Mrs. Robinson”. This November you have an opportunity to add to these memories by attending a very special one night only evening with Art Garfunkel right here on the main stage at Cotuit Center for the Arts. We will offer three price points of tickets for this special event that is sure to sell out quickly. For the past two years we’ve presented Judy Collins on our stage as an invitation only special fundraising event. To present iconic artists of this quality is something we hope to continue each year. So who would you like to see? You never know who may be coming our way and we’d love to hear your thoughts – just send an email or let an usher or box office attendee know. For now though, please join me for an evening with Art Garfunkel. There are very few opportunities to see an artist of his renown in such an intimate and beautiful setting. - David Kuehn

have been able to continue living fully and even help others despite the spectre of ALS.

PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE TU LE FAIS. À COTUIT.

What is your most treasured possession? My photographs. Recordings of my Dad’s voice. Letters and cards from my loved ones. When and where were you happiest? I’ve been blessed to have intense moments of happiness on stage, witnessing beauty while traveling, listening to music, feeling loved. What is your most obvious characteristic? My sparking personality. Followed closely by my complete lack of humor. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? My temper. What is the trait you most deplore in others? Mean-spiritedness. What is your greatest extravagance? Travel. Excellent wine and food. Ideally these things in combination.

BONNIE FAIRBANKS

What is your favorite journey? The one I’ve been on as a person has been a pretty interesting one. I’m actually finally becoming someone I could like!

Bonnie has taken over the stage in many Cotuit theater productions, including Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spamalot, Grey Gardens, and most recently starred as “Mama Rose” in our hit production of Gypsy. It’s time we asked her the really important questions...

What do you most dislike about your appearance? My weight. At 40, I gained a million pounds in a nanosecond and it may be here to stay (see “greatest extravagance”). What do you consider the most over-rated virtue? Patience! Are we done with these questions yet?? On what occasion do you lie? I hate lies and have learned not to tell them. Were I to do so though, it would probably be to spare someone’s feelings or keep the peace.

What is your greatest fear? Knives. Spiders. Wasting precious time. What is your current state of mind? Content. The last few years have been tumultuous personally and professionally, but I’m finally in a good place. What is your favorite occupation? I split my time between head hunting and performing, and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve learned over the years to value opportunities for me to make a positive difference in peoples’ lives – in the first, I help people find each other to create even better professional situations; in the other, I entertain people and make them laugh, cry, and think (I hope)! What historical figure do you most identify with? Attila the Hun. Which living person do you most admire? The Dalai Lama. Who are your real-life heroes? My father (my hero) passed away from ALS three years ago. Since then, I have learned much more about the disease, and have worked firsthand with many more individuals and families living with this horrible disease. I have seen true bravery in those that

Which words or phrases do you most over-use? Based on my years in the business world, I am an incorrigible user of corporate jargon. But we can circle back on that later so we can think outside the box. If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’m continually striving to be more patient and compassionate. My mother is living with advancing dementia, and for years I either didn’t see or refused to see the signs or attributed her behavior to other factors. I’ve gained valuable insight into her situation over the last few years, and hope I am becoming a better daughter to her because of it. What do you consider your greatest achievement? Professionally: having the experience of making my living for a time as an actor. Personally: being there for my ailing parents when they really needed me. I also have a tendency to emerge from horrible situations that would crush a normal person. Where would you like to live? I already live in Paradise!

Member Spotlight Kristin Gerlach My heart has always been in the Northeast, despite growing up outside Cleveland. My mother was a native Bostonian and tired of Midwest winters. Every August we piled into the station wagon for the 13 hour drive to the Cape for three weeks of sunshine, ocean, and sand. She cemented the northeast connection by sending me to Wellesley College where I’m sure I was admitted because of my sixth grade “charm school” completion certificate. To this day I can still walk with a book balanced on my head, I excel at making tea cakes, and I set a mean dinner table. After college, I went to New York University Law School so I could experience New York City. I stayed there and spent most of my legal career as a Vice President and attorney for ABC Television, which ultimately merged into the Walt Disney Company. Even though I retired from Disney/ABC more than 15 years ago, I still consider myself a recovering lawyer. I fill my time with volunteer work, including with the New York City Public Schools, New York Cares, and Board service for both the Rhode Island Wellesley Club and the Rhode Island Coalition of Library Advocates, and now Cotuit Center for the Arts.

spent many afternoons at each other’s houses after school. Life intervened and we fell off each other’s radar scopes completely for more than 35 years. When I was looking for people to send birthday greetings to my mother for her 80th birthday twelve years ago I saw his name on an email list. He agreed to send a card, we reconnected, and ended up marrying five years later. After years in NYC, I suspected that true culture probably did not exist outside Manhattan. After settling in Falmouth I was told that I had to join Cotuit Center for the Arts. What a revelation! The first show I attended was A Grand Night For Singing, and when Anthony sat on the arm of my chair and sang to me, well how could I resist? I truly feel that I’ve found a cultural home at the Center -- the passions of everyone who works and volunteers here transform our shared existence into something thought-provoking and beautiful.

My husband, Kent Beverage, and I moved to Falmouth a few years ago to be closer to my parents, who had retired here in the 1980s. Kent and I were childhood sweethearts. When we were ten, we played on the same neighborhood baseball team (Bruce’s Bombers), and

Board Member Spotlight Michael Dunford CCFTA: Is there one moment at the Center that stands out for you? MD: During Annie, when the kids got to come up on stage, and pet Sandy and get Annie’s autograph. It really broke down the walls between the artist and the audience. CCFTA: You play so many different instruments, but we usually see you on percussion. MD: Yeah, I like banging on stuff. CCFTA: Do you like to be in a traditional pit, or on stage better? MD: I love the traditional pit. The musicians are not supposed to be seen; you are there to support the action, not be a distraction. Plus you get to dress in tee shirts.

Manager at Cape Cod Five Cent Savings Bank by day, percussion extraordinaire by night, Michael is a member of the Center’s Board of Directors and the Music Advisory Committee, and can often be seen playing the drums for the Center’s musical productions. CCFTA: What’s your favorite show that you’ve been in? MD: That’s like picking your favorite child! I’d have to say Jacques Brel. It was my first show, and I made so many great connections, like Kami Lyle and Anthony Teixeira. And Pat Hurton, who convinced me to join the Board!

CCFTA: Besides music, how do you spend your free time? MD: Running. I try to do one marathon a year. It helps me manage stress, and sometimes when I’m running, a piece of music that I am working on just comes together in my head. I’m not even thinking about it, it just snaps into place. CCFTA: Your wife, Gail, is also very involved in the arts scene doing marketing for the Cape Cod Conservatory. And you have three young kids! With work, family, music and training you must be really busy. MD: My wife is very understanding! I’m out three or four nights per week. Actually, that’s probably why my marriage is working!

CCFTA: What do you like about being on the board?

CCFTA: What do you want our readers to know about the Center?

MD: I love the Center because it really is like a family. There is a terrific sense of collaboration here between the different aspects of the arts. It starts with leadership. The board and staff have a great vision of what the Center should look and feel like.

MD: As an artist the Center is so welcoming, and this translates to the audience. It really lets the patrons enjoy themselves, and everyone – the audience and the performers – shares the experience together.

Volunteer Spotlight Dale Silva When I asked Dale if he was interested in being the next volunteer spotlight, he hesitated a minute and said, “Well I don’t like being in the public eye, but it will be good exposure for the publicity committee, so I’ll do it. We always need more volunteers.” (Which, by the way, should not be a problem for long, since by the time our interview for this article was over, he had me committing to hanging posters all over our new marketing territory!) CCFTA: When did you become involved with the Center? DS: My wife Pat and I joined as members in 2012. The first play we saw at the Center was Doubt. At the Annual Meeting that year, Jim Hoeck, president of the Board of Directors mentioned that the Center needed help spreading the word about the Center. I thought, “I can help,” and began volunteering right away.

Cape and beyond, from Dennis to Wareham with a group of 9 volunteers. We always need more volunteers.

CCFTA: In what capacity do you volunteer at the Center?

CCFTA: What are the requirements?

Over the years we have become more and more involved as volunteers. Right now I am serving on the Publicity Committee, the Volunteer Advisory Committee, and the Marketing Committee. Pat is really enjoying her work as a volunteer in the gallery. CCFTA: What is the Publicity Committee? DS: It’s not just about hanging event posters. It’s also distributing lists of the Center’s classes and volunteer brochures, as well as coordinating community displays that promote the Center. Recently I’ve set up business display tables at 7 branches of Cape Cod 5 Cent Savings Bank. CCFTA: You have really grown this program since you came on board. DS: We are always expanding our territory to new towns with new volunteers. Right now the Publicity Committee covers the Interview by Jenn Cummings

DS: You have to be energetic – and you have to have a car! Volunteers stop by the Admin Building at the Center once per month to pick up materials, which are always ready the day of Wine & Music. Then you can stay for the event! Then you deliver the materials on your own schedule. CCFTA: What do you love about volunteering at the Center? DS: The Center has every aspect of the arts – theatre, music, a gallery, and educational classes - in one place. I get to work with and meet a great people all the time. It makes it all worthwhile. If you are interested in volunteering with the Publicity Committee, please contact us at info@cotuitcenterforthearts.org.
