And welcome to SUMMER!! I’m happy to report that we not only survived the relentless winter season, but we provided consistently high quality and plentiful performances in theater, music, comedy, and education. But now attention is on the summer season. I can barely contain my excitement – so I won’t. Whenever you see me I’ll be grinning from ear to ear proudly urging you to make sure you have your tickets for “Moms on Broadway,” “Bob Dylan’s Birthday Bash,” Cape Cod Can’s “Scary Gary” production, the eagerly anticipated return of “What the World Needs Now,” “The Beauty Queen of Leenane,” the incomparable Emily Wade Adams in “Love is Blind: A Tribute to Amy Winehouse” (YES!!!!), Traditional Irish Sessions, “Songs of the Greatest Generation” by Larry Marsland, “Oklahoma Singalong!”, “Liz Saunders Live!”, “Art,” The Meetinghouse and Cape Cod Chamber Music Festivals, “Hot Flash Laughs” featuring Nancy Witter, “A Winter’s Tale” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” the George Gritzbach Band, “The Fat Ass Cancer Bitch turns 49” (WHAT???), “Meet Me at the Movies” with Stephanie Weaver, the Brazen Belles in a salute to the Wild, Wild West (I can only imagine!), “Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking,”

And phenomenal artwork on display with opportunities for artists all over the Cape to participate in our summer open juried exhibit. And the July unveiling of “Piece by Piece II,” our second large scale collaborative surprise -- this time including 108 participating artists.

I am thrilled and honored to share this great programming with you. It takes an army of volunteers, of dedicated staff, of an engaged community -- and we have that. It’s also time for us to grow. Stay tuned, we have some exciting plans coming and we want you to be a partner with us.

COME BE A PART OF THE ACT! We invite local singers, actors, or other volunteer performers to “try out” for the roles in our live stage shows. We regularly hold open-call auditions, and have an email bulletin that can keep you posted on auditions and other theatrical volunteer opportunities.

Theater Spotlight The Bay Colony Shakespeare Company The Bay Colony Shakespeare Company will be bringing touring productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Winter’s Tale to Cotuit this summer. We spoke with Artistic Director Neil McGarry about his company: Tell us about The Bay Colony Shakespeare Company. How did you come into existence?

The Bay Colony Shakespeare Company is a classical theatre company located just over the bridge in Marshfield. We are devoted to telling great stories as simply, compassionately, and as fully as we can. I was blessed with having Alice Williams at Barnstable High School who helped me to hear and experience Shakespeare as something vivid and thrilling, something that I would want to spend my life doing. I was able to form the BCSC “officially” in December 2012 to produce Nicolas Minella’s Burbage at Boston Playwrights’ Theatre and CCftA. I performed Burbage for 3 months and thought about what I wanted the company to stand for, what I wanted a

group of actors to be able to do. That led to our first Hamlet, then to our IRNE nominated A Christmas Carol. In 2014 we were able to put the BCSC mission statement and our actors into full gear with our educational tour of Hamlet and then our whirlwind of a summer in downtown Plymouth of Much Ado, Macbeth, and Hamlet in rep, eight shows a week in July, with Burbage then going to the NY Fringe for August, and finally bringing A Christmas Carol back for December. It was a rigorous year and the company learned about the absolute fitness required to attempt the work.

You are bringing two Shakespeare plays to us this summer, A Winter’s Tale and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Can you tell us anything about your vision for these productions?

I love both of these plays and have been in much-loved productions of them. We are continually asking ourselves the same question, how do we tour these shows? Our answer, so far, has been – “Simply, compassionately, fully” – to tell the stories as simply as we can and to hold to Shakespeare’s narrative line and, hopefully, release our audience’s imaginations through Shakespeare’s text. Thankfully Shakespeare is already there before us. The plays are already brilliant. Can we as a company encompass what he wrote? The Winter’s Tale & A Midsummer Night’s Dream are about love, in all its forms.

My vision is to bring that love onto the stage to share with those who choose to come see us.

thought and action, a questing mind, a certain physical prowess, a special combination of humility and fearlessness and, most essential, to listen to and share with the audience.

For me, and my colleagues at the BCSC, the answer we’ve come up with is to go out, open our hearts and to share: to tell the story, with all of the skill we have, as simply and clearly as we can. It’s a tall order... but it has stood us in good stead these last two years. I’m hoping we are continuing to learn and grow as I feel that learning and growing is the only way that we can continue to make not just Shakespeare but all of the work we do accessible.

How does your company approach making Shakespeare accessible to the modern audience?

Imagine a young girl performing at age three and knowing by age ten that she’d love to be a professional singer. Imagine her in middle school musical productions, singing solos and glowing inside as the audience applauds her performances.

Imagine the feelings of this young artist and you will begin to understand why now, as a grown woman and experienced artist, she is focused on eliciting the emotion contained in every song she performs.

Emily Wade Adams doesn’t sing to hear her own voice. She uses her voice as a vehicle to convey feelings and bring those listening on a lyrical journey with her. She has made this a life-long journey and is in no hurry to reach the end. She is always dreaming about her next chance to meet her audience.

Originally inspired by her dad’s collection of soul music, which was blasted around their house on Sunday afternoons, Emily found her voice and her love of dancing with the music. With her admiration of great songs came her respect for the power of music and her role as a channel to convey each song’s meaning.

She’s fluent singing lead with a

swing jazz band, high-powered Motown tunes, and even retro R & B. And, she’s passionate about the more modern influence of Amy Winehouse, whose raw and honest persona, wit, vulnerability, and amazing style all lend themselves to the emotional foundation Emily strives to convey.

For her show this June 18th, 19th and 20th at the Center, Emily will be supported by a band that includes Malcolm Granger (keys), Tad Price (guitar), Jon Evans (bass), Matthias Bossi (drums), Steve Ahern (trumpet/flute), Dino Govoni (sax), plus two backup singers. It promises to be one of the musical highlights of the year.

They’ll perform jazz and Motown standards like “Teach Me Tonight” and “Cupid,” as well as a variety of Winehouse originals all selected to showcase a broad spectrum of jazz and soul. Imagine yourself sitting in the jazz club setting of CCftA, welcoming in the summer of 2015 with a drink in your hand, some good friends, and some great music that will open your heart and touch your soul!

Education Spotlight Education Spotlight

Giving Art a Chance home studio in Millis as well as in many local recreation departments, libraries, and artist guilds throughout the Boston Metro West area, and workshops from Rhode Island to New Hampshire. In particular, she was founder and director of the Stony Brook Art Guild at the Stony Brook Nature Center in Norfolk, and was a member of the Copley Society of Art, where she taught workshops for innercity children.

If you’re one of those people who has never taken an art class at Cotuit because you don’t think you have any natural talent, then you need to meet Rosalie McCarthy. Having spent over 25 years teaching both children and adults at all levels, Rosalie will be the first to tell you that no one is “naturally” talented.

Rather, talent is a skill developed through exercise. Drawing is a mechanical and acquired skill that improves with practice.

Over the past several years, Rosalie has been teaching such skills at Cotuit through classes that include acrylic and watercolor still life, seascapes, landscapes, florals, and portraiture, among others, all presented in a direct but nonintimidating manner that allows the student’s “talent” to be encouraged and effectively developed.

Today, she continues teaching drawing and painting classes at Milford High School and Upper Cape Tech. Having originally studied at the Butera School of Art and graduating from the Vesper George School of Art, Rosalie brings an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience to CCftA. She also has contributed a collection of 30 easels to the Center, originally made for her recreational department workshops.

So, for those folks who have previously hesitated to try an art class at the Center for fear of failing, take a look at the latest Education brochure and sign up for one of Rosalie’s classes – you’ll be surprised to learn how talented you are!

Rosalie McCarthy came to Cape Cod 15 years ago and has offered her unique teaching approach in many other local venues, too, including the Falmouth Artist Guild, Cape Cod Art Association, the Adult Education Program at Upper Cape Tech, and through workshops in Barnstable, Centerville, and Yarmouth.

Richard Bertman: Kinetic Sculpture During an extended period in the summer, our galleries will feature the unique and whimsical kinetic sculpture of renowned Boston architect, Richard Bertman. Curatorial committee members Michelle Law and David Kuehn sat down recently with exhibit presenter Denise Delorey and the artist.

DK: Denise, what was your initial inspiration in wanting to bring this work to Cotuit?

DD: I’ve known Richard since 1994. His extraordinary sculpture came into the lobby of 125 High Street in Boston, a building that has a cavernous lobby lacking any human elements. That public display of Richard’s work was an enormous way to showcase the building in a much more dramatic as well as wholistic way, and we had a great partnership. I’ve looked at the work you’ve done here (at Cotuit), leading the effort in bringing the best of art to the Cape, and I thought Richard is somebody who is always up for a new destination and showing his work, and I think he has a great story to tell.

DK: Did you know Richard before you saw the work in the lobby at High Street?

DD: I was a little nervous when I had to meet Richard for the first time because he was this incredible architect at CBT, the architectural firm he founded with two others. I was working for a real estate developer developing 125 High Street, and someone gave me the heads up that there was this really cool guy, Richard Bertman, who had these amazing sculptures. So I just called him up -- was nervous at first that he would even take my call -- and then I was thrilled when he did. The show that we put together ran from May 19 to October 10, 1994 -- one of the highlights of my professional career.

DK: So that’s how you met, by putting that show together? You cold-called?

DD & RB: Yes. RB: And I’ve never been the same! I thought she was crazy! Actually, it was really exciting. I wanted people

to have respect for my aesthetic qualities, because as an architect, my clients would say “I don’t like this” or “I don’t like that,” and you have to accommodate them. At that time, I was trying to build a sense that I knew what I was doing aesthetically, so with sculpture it forced me to show them.

DK: Did you consider sculpture a hobby when you started?

RB: When I went to graduate school at UC Berkeley I took a course in welding. I had done a piece I didn’t like and I threw it in a barrel. Later someone saw me on the campus, and they said “hey, we saw your piece in the museum!” Apparently someone had taken my piece out of the trash and put it in the museum, and I thought, gee maybe I have a talent in this! I love to watch people seeing my sculptures, and I love to stand aside and just hear what they have to say. Once I was packing a piece up to move it somewhere, and it was all wrapped with packing material and stuff and someone asked “how did you get an idea to do a piece like this?”

DK: This will be one of the most unusual and unique exhibits we’ve ever mounted here, and we’re really excited about it. How would you describe your work?

RB: Think whimsy and humor – I get a chance to tease ideas that concern me through humor -- I think I do that when I speak about things as well as through art. Do you know any jokes?

DK: Denise, I’m sitting here thinking about how you cold-called Richard for the ‘94 exhibit and you cold-called me about this exhibit. Then Michelle and I got to meet you on our road trip to Richard’s home, and we all got to know one another – just because you picked up the phone!

There are so many great benefits that people don’t realize when you go on a journey like this – and now we’re sitting here in March planning a show that’s going to happen in July.

Michelle, I wanted to ask about your impression when we went to Richard’s house to see the work for the first time.

ML: I thought it was fabulous that you were able to have a part of your home as a gallery, Richard. I think that’s such a gift that you can really bring people into your world. It’s all right there. It’s really exciting to me.

RB: I wish my wife felt that way!

DK: Michelle -- there’s so much work, how do you think of what would make a cohesive show?

ML: I guess when I first saw Richard’s work, I was thinking of our gallery wall space and which pieces

would have the most impact in our space, then which pieces work with other ones and lead your eye around.

It was SO much fun being there -- it was Disneyesque!

DK: Denise and Richard, what do you hope people get out of coming to this show?

DD: I hope that people of all ages, especially teenagers and college students, look at the work and realize that you can have a very successful career as a professional architect, and still maintain a love for something else you want to do.

RB: I want people to be able to enjoy art without having to study, without having a formal education about it - to simply see something and enjoy it, to think about it, and be affected by it in some way.

DK: I think everyone’s going to be in for an amazing experience with this show, and we’re honored to have you.

The Board President We passed a major milestone this past March of which I want you to all take note. It was David’s fifth anniversary as Executive Director! I can’t sing David’s praises loud enough.

David is the heart and soul of this organization. He’s the face of the organization. He’s a wonderful, ceaseless and seemingly tireless administrator – which is amazing because I don’t think that he sleeps. He’s an incredible ambassador for the Center up and down the Cape. A Community Art Project

Keys are objects that recall vivid memories and inspire powerful concepts.

The Key Idea™ invites Cape Cod residents and visitors to create a piece of key-inspired art and writing that will become part of a large-scale community art exhibit both at Cotuit Center for the Arts and Barnstable Town Hall in October 2015. This multigenerational project explores what is important at different stages of life through the metaphor of a key.

People of all ages can participate by selecting a key, drawing it, and then writing about what the key might open or start or do.

Lenore Lyons, the founder of Explore Art! The Journal Project is passionate about community art and believes that everyone is creative with a story to tell. The Key Idea™ gives people an opportunity to share a bit of themselves and add their voice to others in our community.

But why keys? Keys are widely available, they are interesting to people on many different levels, and are used in so many ways. Also, they are easy to draw. Keys provide the perfect little piece of inspiration to by article

get creative ideas flowing. Lenore believes that keys connect unknown people over time and space. Hundreds and hundreds of keys have been donated from all around the world, mostly from the US but others have come from Canada, Central Amercia, Europe, and Asia. Each one was important to someone at some time. Participants in The Key Idea™ are offered a trayful of keys. They look through and select one that “feels right.” The key that inspires the artist is connected to the former owner who held and used that same key.

The artwork that is included in the exhibits will be arranged on a grid and grouped sequentially by age. We lock and unlock important things. Each individual page will join other thoughtful, funny, deep, or introspective pieces to represent our community from the youngest to the most elderly. In this exhibit, viewers will see the progression of art, writing, and creative ideas from people aged 1 through 100.

Our Mainstage show for July is the perennial favorite, Gypsy. Loosely based on the 1957 memoirs of the famous striptease artist, Gypsy Rose Lee, the story focuses on her mother, Rose, whose name has become synonymous with the ultimate stage mother (“Sing out, Louise!”). It follows the dreams and efforts of Rose to raise her two daughters and casts an affectionate eye on the hardships of show business life.

The 1959 musical contains many songs that became popular standards, including “Everything’s Coming up Roses,”“Together (Wherever We Go),”“Small World,”“Some People,” and “Let Me Entertain You.” Gypsy has been referred to as the greatest American musical of all time by numerous critics and writers. We are thrilled that veteran director/choreographer, David McCarty, is directing our production. We spoke with him before April auditions.

CCftA: Why do you love the show?

DM: With the book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy is one of the true classics in all of American Musical Theatre. Beautifully written and equally funny, touching, gritty and real. I first encountered the piece at age 18 while a student and learned the role of Tulsa. His song “All I Need is the Girl” was my “go to” audition piece for many years and served me well.

CCftA: Tell us about your concept for the show.

DM: My concept for this production is to keep the focus on the actors and participants instead of trying to recreate the myriad amount of locations and

scenic changes you can get easily mired in. It’s about the journey more than any of the destinations -- and about the undaunted spirit to pick yourself up and keep going in the midst of all road blocks and the rejection that is such a part of show business. It is about relationships, warts and all!

CCftA: What do you hope the audience will leave with?

DM: Hope. There is always hope in this piece which is what draws me to it – and I will try like hell to ensure that singular message survives intact. Hope for love, hope for that one big break, hope for recognition, hope for redemption, hope for forgiveness when you decide to take a different path and follow your dreams.

ABOUT GYPSY ROSE LEE Gypsy Rose Lee was born Rose Louise Hovick on February 14,1911, in Washington to advertising salesman John Olaf Hovick and his teenage bride Rose. Her younger sister, who would become an actress too, was born in 1913.

Through these films, however, Lee was to remain completely clothed at all times.

In 1944, she gave birth to her only child Erik Lee who was fathered by film director Otto Preminger. In 1948, Gypsy married third husband Julio de Diego but they divorced in 1955.

Her early career consisted of touring the provinces in a vaudeville act co-starring with her sister, and managed by her mother. Her sister, June Havoc, began a solo career, and Rose Louise became the Gypsy Rose Lee character, “intellectual stripper”.

Gypsy was overshadowed by her talented younger sister and vaudeville was dying out. Her mother took the girls to a burlesque house and at the age of 15, Gypsy made her debut.

She took to the stage in a grass skirt and not much else and teasingly didn’t take much off. The audience responded positively to this new form of striptease, which was more tease than strip. She earned a reputation for her onstage wit as well as her strip style.

Soon she had made it to Minsky’s, the most famous burlesque house in the United States, where waitresses in French maid costumes sprayed the audience with perfume. Here she took her stage name which derived from her hobby of reading tea leaves and was combined with her real first name Rose and added Lee as a whim.

She pursued a very successful career in burlesque even performing at high society balls.

In 1937, when mayor LaGuardia shut down all of New York’s burlesque houses, Lee was forced to head west to Hollywood, and began her film career. In 1939, she returned to headline New York World’s fair. She married Arnold Mizzy on 25 August 1937 at the insistence of her film studio but they divorced in 1941.

Lee’s talents were not to be confined to mere performing, however. A novelist and memoir writer, she also saw her adaptations of her work storm the stage.

Lee’s ‘The G-string Murders’ was adapted as ‘Lady of Burlesque’ in 1943, and her ‘The Naked Genius’ adapted in ‘Doll Face’.

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Lee became a television guest star, exhibiting a witty, self-deprecating character. She even succeeded in hosting her own talk show on at least two occasions.

Throughout her career, Gypsy had to deal with her mother who tried to exhort money through vicious threats until her death from terminal cancer in 1954.

It was her – admittedly fanciful - autobiography, ‘Gypsy: A Memoir’, published in 1957, which secured her fame.

It was adapted for the stage by Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim.

The motion picture adaptation of the tale of stripper, and brutal encouraging mother, became a great success.

Starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood, the film was a great success, and cemented Lee’s legend.

Diagnosed with lung cancer in 1969, she died on 26 April 1970. She is buried at Inglewood Park Cemetery in California.

Gypsy had an affair with film producer Mike Todd and in an attempt to make him jealous married William Alexander Kirkland in 1942, later divorcing in 1944.

Initially appearing as Louise Hovich, she earned billing as Gypsy Rose Lee by 1943, and she excelled at comic roles in films such as ‘Belle of the Yukon’ in 1944.

Every third Wednesday of the month, the Studio turns into an intimate performing space, featuring some of the best voices of the Cape at CCftA’s monthly open-mic, Salon of Shorts.

“Shorts” is the important word here -- performers have five minutes at the microphone -- five minutes to speak their poem, read their story, recite that sonnet they learned in high school, try out their new standup sketch, sing the love song they wrote to their dog, perform some interpretive dance, juggle flame, spin plates, or swallow swords. They haven’t actually had flame jugglers or plate spinners or sword swallowers YET, but hosts Christine Ernst and Greg Hischak remain hopeful. It’s a night of interesting voices – lots of veteran poets and performers, some newbies, lots of plain old listeners happy to sit in the audience and enjoy 90 minutes (give or take) of (mostly) original work.

“It’s always a rich night,” says Ernst, “and I love that it sort of epitomizes the ‘welcoming hub’ of CCftA’s mission statement – we take all comers.”

Why just five minutes? you may ask.

Ernst and Hischak are both spoken word artists and built the event around popular slam events, where most poets get just three minutes to perform their work. Since Salon of Shorts draws storytellers, essayists, and occasional stand-up artists and singers, as well as poets, they expanded the mic-time to five minutes – which is about the time it takes to read a page of printed

copy out loud. They are lenient with the limit – there’s a grace period of 30 or 45 seconds or so, but if a reader goes “long,” Greg will begin to sharpen pencils at the back of the house – a gentle auditory reminder to wind it up. “We’ve only had to cut two readers off in the past two and a half years, and sharpening pencils is nicer than a big hook,” says Hischak. “The time limit ensures that folks edit and rehearse their work before they perform at Salon,” continues Ernst, adding, ”we usually have about 15 to 20 readers – we have to run a tight ship so that everyone gets a chance to perform.”

Salon of Shorts begins at 7:30 on third Wednesdays, right after Wine and Music ends in the Gallery. Signup starts at 7. And of course there’s wine. Maybe you have a poem in your pocket. Or a story to tell. Come on in – everyone has five minutes of something worth sharing. And if you know any plate spinners, they’re welcome, too.

If you want to be inspired artistically, spend time at the Center on the 3rd Wednesday of any given month. Several years ago we started a monthly ongoing event called Wine and Music Wednesday. The idea was to introduce new visitors to the Center where lovers of art would share a glass of wine, look at beautiful art, and hear live music. Over the course of time, Wine and Music Wednesday became a signature event at the Center, regularly attended by over 100 patrons. After the February 2015 event, with piles and piles of snow everywhere, I sent a note to our Board describing a typical 3rd Wednesday. Here’s what was overlapping on the campus that evening: • The Community Leadership Institute conducted a board meeting in the Art Studio • Volunteers prepared cheese and fruit trays, set up tables and lugged boxes of wine glasses from the Annex to the Gallery • 90 people braved the horrible weather to attend Wine and Music Wednesday • The cast of Harold Pinter’s “The Dumb Waiter” rehearsed in the Black Box Theater • The cast of David Mamet’s “Oleanna” rehearsed in the Administration Building • Auditions were held in the basement for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” • A tech run through took place in the theater for “The Beat Goes On” • 40 more brave souls attended the “Salon of Shorts”, sharing poetry and stories in the Art Studio • A Life Drawing class took place in the upstairs room of the Black Box Annex All of this activity happened between 4:30pm and 9:30pm. Visual art, theater, music, education, open mic, and yes, some wine and cheese, too. So if you haven’t been to the Center on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, come join us. I guarantee you’ll be inspired!

Steve has played the lead role in many Cotuit theater productions, including 12 Angry Men, Anything Goes, It’s A Wonderful Life, Treasure Island, and most recently, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. We asked him the really important questions...

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

It’s taken me a long time to get to the point where I like who I am. I don’t think I’d necessarily change anything but I just hope I’ve learned from my past experiences.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My kids.

What is your greatest fear?

Death and spiders.

Where would you like to live?

In peace, wherever that is.

What is your current state of mind?

Content but striving for improvement.

What is the quality you most admire in a man?

Decency, kindness and respect.

What is your favorite occupation?

I love acting and singing. Now if I could just make a living…

What is the quality you most admire in a woman?

Basically the same.

Which living person do you most admire?

I admire anyone who lives with honesty, dignity and the true desire to make a difference in whatever they do.

What is it you most dislike?

Orange vegetables.

What do you value most in your friends?

Their individuality.

Who is your favorite fictional hero?

Wolverine from the Xmen. Badass.

What is your most treasured possession?

My dad was a police chief. When he passed away, I was presented with the flag at his funeral. As material things go, I could lose almost anything else, but not that.

When and where were you happiest?

The birth of my children followed by being naked in a hot tub with a bourbon, under the stars, on my birthday with the woman I love and surrounded by friends.

How would you like to die?

I am immortal.

If you were to die and come back as a person or an animal, what do you think it would be?

A Bengal Tiger. Nobody f***s with a tiger.

What is your motto, the words you live by or that mean a lot to you?

You won’t know until you try.

Who has been the greatest influence on you?

My mom. Much of my love of words, language and theatre was nurtured through her.

We thought we’d share some of your favorites to enjoy at home – just remember to raise your glass to us when you do!

Comfortably Numb Featured during the 57 Heavy Pink Floyd concert, BREATHE 2 oz Vodka 1 oz Peach Schnapps 2 oz Orange Juice 2 oz Cranberry Juice • Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.

• Shake until thoroughly chilled and pour into a highball glass with fresh ice.

• Finish with a splash of grenadine and garnish with an orange slice.

This one is best made by the pitcher.

1 750 ml bottle of Chianti 6 oz Triple Sec 3 oz fruit flavored Brandy 6 oz simple syrup (or to desired sweetness) 2 oranges 1 apple • Wash and slice oranges and apples, place in a large pitcher and crush lightly with a muddle or wooden spoon.

• Pour remaining ingredients into the pitcher and chill 4 hours to over night.

• Serve chilled with or without crushed fruit and garnish with an apple and orange slice.

Member Spotlight The Smily Family If you attended the Member Summer Social last August, you most likely stood in line at the old-fashioned popcorn machine with three of the cutest boys you’re ever likely to see. They are the Smily boys, and they and their parents are huge fans of the Center (and popcorn!). Whether you come to an art gallery opening, a class, a concert, or a play, there’s a good chance you’ll see some or all of the Smily family – dad Terry, mom Julie, sons Matthew, Daniel, and Samuel – in attendance.

Creative talent runs throughout this family. Julie, a clinical psychologist, is also a classically trained soprano. She

currently performs with the Zamir Choral of Boston, the preeminent Jewish choral group in the Northeast. Previously, she sang with the Grammy award-winning Washington Chorus which is currently in its 53rd season. She recently debuted as a solo performer, singing in German to the delight of friends and family.

Oldest son Matthew is a hip hop dancer and a percussionist. Daniel, the middle son, has taken acting classes both here at CCftA and at Harwich Junior Theatre.

And the youngest, Samuel, takes after mom and loves to sing. Terry claims to be the only member of the family who isn’t creative, but we’re pretty sure he just hasn’t realized his artistic potential!

As one of the owners of the Wendy’s of Cape Cod restaurants, and also as President of the Jewish Federation of Cape Cod, Terry is a busy man in the community.

He divides his time between his family, his work, his faith, and his commitment to philanthropy, supporting Cotuit Center for the Arts as well as a variety of Jewish causes on Cape Cod, Cape Cod Child Development, Luke’s Love, The PJ Library, and the Artsbridge Institute, which partners youth on both sides of communities in conflict.

Board Member Spotlight Melanie Powers, Treasurer Center always as if it was their idea. They are the two best people I know.

CCftA: What do you do for fun?

MP: I never go anywhere without a book, and some of you may have heard about my own “12 step program” to get back on the stage. I have enjoyed being in several readings and shows and have a final goal of singing on the “big stage.” I am doing my first drama in 25 years as I write and think it is a lot harder than comedy.

There is nothing I love more than traveling with my husband and son. Doing anything with them really.

CCftA: How long have you served on the Board?

MP: 6 years in November.

CCftA: Why did you join?

MP: I was invited by the President and couldn’t resist the appeal of the shows I had seen and the smell of potential in the air.

CCftA: Where’d you grow up and how did you end up on the Cape?

MP: Born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and came to the Cape for the summer when I was two. Moved that year to Kentucky when my father founded the first school of education at the University of Louisville, and yes, I had a mint julep or two in the in-field at the Derby. Got back here as soon as I could, at 16. Graduated HS in three years and graduated college with my BA in three years. Then one year for my Masters and another three in the Law, Policy, and Society program at Northeastern.

CCftA: Tell us a little about your family.

MP: In the five years I have been with the Center I have lost my girlfriend of 30 years and both of my parents. My parents were part of the Powers-Presbrey pod and the best friends we ever had. My brother had died a few years before. The CCftA became a new family in lots of ways. My heroes are my husband, Rick, and my son, Paul. CCftA: What do you love about the Center?

MP: It is a full life unto itself. There is rarely a day or night that you can’t just go over and be entertained or help to prepare for others to be entertained. I feel at home and welcome, always. I try to give others the same experience.

There have been lots of firsts for my family at the Center, we have grown there, each of us in different ways. It is safe and each person’s individual skills are appreciated. It is an extension of home, of our living room often.

CCftA: How about what you love about being on the Board?

MP: I love that we are not settling for mediocrity, we get better all the time but we always inch the goal post out when we get close. And as Treasurer, I have the opportunity to watch the organization grow up from the very grass roots with everyone beginning to understand what it takes to sustain an organization like this, how precious and important it is, and how every contribution makes a difference. Something like that, it really does jazz me – and I welcome others to come help.

CCftA: And a nifty fact about yourself: MP: I have worked in more than 25 countries, traveled to probably 10 more for fun, and loved every trip, both the good and the challenging. It ensures humility and awe.

CCftA: Anything else?

MP: Best decision of my life: the trade I made with Rick (my husband) when he turned 50, he got to become a racecar driver and I got to have Paul! Of course now Paul is a racecar driver and I am re-thinking the whole thing!

Volunteer Spotlight Florence Pritchard Volunteer extraordinaire and unofficial ambassador for Cotuit Center for the Arts.

If you don’t recognize her friendly face from around the Center, you might just recognize her car. The bright red Mustang convertible was Florence’s gift to herself on her 80th birthday. She wanted a change after driving a station wagon all her life.

Florence has a big family, and she brings them to the Center as much as she can.

With 5 children, 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, Florence is a busy woman, but she still finds time to volunteer at the Center.

Along with attending lots of events at the Center, Florence is a member of the Volunteer Advisory Committee and the Docent Program, she manages the Center’s Archive Project, and she distributes our marketing materials to six locations each month. Phew! That’s a lot!

Florence is a washashore who “retired” to the Cape in 1989, after 18 years as an art teacher in Weymouth. Her retirement did not last very long.

In an effort to keep her friends connected, she began teaching a 6 week watercolor workshop, which has since morphed into weekly painting classes for new artists.

Every Wednesday morning, Florence hosts a class of about 10 students in her home studio. Most of these folks have never painted before. Many tell her that they can’t draw a straight line and Florence says that it’s a good thing -- there aren’t many in art!

She loves when her students start her class by saying that they never thought they could paint, and then come away with beautiful masterpieces.

When asked why she loves the Center, Florence said that the quality of art at the Center is just wonderful. From the Black Box theatre to the gallery and main stage, the quality is equal to that of New York and Boston – and she’s seen a lot of theatre!

Florence wants to encourage you to take advantage of something special: a high quality art center in your own back yard.
