I hope you’ve all been finding ways to stay cool while finally getting to make hay, recover from fair season, and get ready to start a new school year. The annual 4-H Youth Fair was a great success at the 136th Grahamsville Little World’s Fair and we’re already hard at work planning to make the next one even better. You can read about the successes in the Youth & Family Development section of this month’s newsletter, but here, I must take a moment to thank all of the volunteers, sponsors, donors, auction bidders, and youth who spent dozens of hours and hundreds of dollars to support Cornell Cooperative Extension’s (CCE) 4-H Youth Development program. The fair is a capstone event for all of Extension’s programs, providing resources in horticulture, food preservation, Sullivan County ag promotion, the Entrepreneurial and Teaching Kitchen, and the Caregiver Resource Center to thousands of fairgoers every year. It is an opportunity for county residents and guests to meet staff, gather information that can make their lives better, and engage with CCE for future learning and volunteer opportunities. As always, we are incredibly grateful to the Neversink Agricultural Society for being such gracious hosts and supporting our 300 4-H youth and their families.

October 21st is the Annual Senior Safety Day and November 13th we’re hosting a Volunteer Open House and Potluck!

Our Annual Afternoon Gala will be held November 8th at 12 pm at Bernie’s. As I’ve shared before, in 1995 the County allocation accounted for almost 75% of our annual budget. In 2016, that percentage will be around 30%. The fundraising activities and events like the auctions and gala hosted

by CCE staff, board, and committee members are essential to closing the funding gap. Your attendance, participation, and generosity is so important to keeping CCE in the business of offering science-based solutions to farmers, families, and kids so we can all share a good, healthy quality of life in Sullivan County. Please save the date and plan to join us on November 8th for another year of excellent locally sourced fare, great service, and a live

When next month’s newsletter rolls around, I will be celebrating my first anniversary as executive director here at Extension in Sullivan County. Even after 11 months it feels like we’ve only just begun to rebuild Extension, and the county. At the same time, it feels like we’ve been at it for a lifetime. One thing that has remained steady is the spirit of service and optimism from the staff, volunteers, members, and the community at large. I’m looking forward to reflecting on the many changes Extension has made recently to ensure sustainable growth of the organization, improve the quality of service and reach of our educational programs, and plans for the year ahead. I am continuously grateful to the staff, board, and program committees for their vision, support, and never-give-up attitude.

Together, we are strengthening an integral institution in Sullivan County and I’m proud to be a part of the work. Until next month, be well.

Submitted by Michelle Lipari, Ag & 4-H Community Educator Weather extremes in 2012 and 2013 impacted corn silage and hay yields for many dairy farms in New York, prompting a growing interest in double cropping of winter cereals for harvest as high quality forage in the spring. From 2012 to 2014, forage yields were measured for 19 cereal rye fields and 44 triticale fields in New York where the winter cereal for forage followed corn.

Yields averaged 1.62 and 2.18 tons of dry matter (DM) per acre for cereal rye and triticale, respectively, and 71% of all fields in the study exceeded 1.5 tons DM/acre (Ketterings et al., 2015). To learn from famers’ experiences, 30 New York farm managers that had grown winter cereals for forage were interviewed. Surveyed farmers planted, on average, 8% of their tillable acres to winter cereals with the intent to harvest as forage. Triticale was most frequently

used (70%), typically seeded with a drill (57%). Farmers identified timely fall seeding as the biggest challenge with double cropping of winter cereals.

Despite challenges and production questions, 83% of the surveyed farmers planned to continue to grow double crops.

Examining the Economics of Double Cropped Winter Cereals for Forage The economic analysis sought to answer three questions: (1) What are the costs of production associated with double cropped winter cereals for forage following corn silage?; (2) What are the expected changes in profit associated with double cropping?; and (3) What yield levels ensure that adoption of a double cropped winter cereal will be a profitable change? For this analy-

sis, five general scenarios were defined (see Table 1).

Producers helped to describe the machinery complement, including size of tillage, planting and harvesting machinery, tractors, and self-propelled units for three dairy farm sizes: 100, 500, and 1,000 cows (Table 2). Scenarios reflected cultural practices, hours per acre by task, input use, and other factors typical or recommended for the region. Cost concepts, including variable and fixed costs, machinery costs based upon hours of use per acre, and others, were used to estimate costs of production for different scenarios. Lazarus (2014) provided machinery ownership and operating cost per hour estimates. All analyses reflect 2014 price levels.

Partial budgeting was used to estimate changes in profit associated with the double crops versus no winter crop, where profit equaled value of production, income minus the costs of inputs used in production. A partial budget analysis answers four questions: (1) What increases in value of production are expected?; (2) What decreases in costs are expected?; (3) What decreases (Continued on page 12)

Japanese Knotweed Japanese knotweed, a member of the buckwheat family, was introduced into the U.S. from Eastern Asia (Japan, China, Korea) as an ornamental on estates in the late- 1800s. It has also been used as an erosion control plant. Although once sold through seed and plant catalogs, by the late-1930s knotweed was already being viewed as a problematic pest. The plant, which can grow from three to 15 feet tall, has bamboo-like stems and is sometimes called Japanese bamboo. As with many invasive plants, knotweed thrives in disturbed areas and once established can spread rapidly, creating monoculture stands that threaten native plant communities. Japanese knotweed can tolerate deep shade, high temperatures, high soil, salinity, and drought. It is commonly found along streams and rivers, in low-lying areas, disturbed areas such as rights-of-way, and around old home and farmsteads.

Identification: The plant is an upright, shrubby, herbaceous, woodyappearing perennial reaching heights of 10 to 15 feet. The stems are smooth, stout, and hollow. The plant’s shoots come up from a network of spreading rhizomes. These horizontal roots can reach lengths of 65 feet (20 m) or more. Japanese knotweed has branched sprays of small greenish-white flowers from August to September. Although they have complementary male and female organs, those organs are vestigial and the flowers function unisexually.

Japanese knotweed spreads primarily by seed (transported by wind, water, animals, humans, or as a soil contaminant), stem fragments, and by shoots sprouting from its system of rhizome.

Impacts: Japanese knotweed spreads rapidly, forming dense thickets that crowd and shade out native vegetation.

natural ecosystems, and negatively impacts wildlife habitat. The ground under knotweed thickets tends to have very little other growth. This bare soil is very susceptible to erosion, posing a particular threat to riparian areas. Once established, populations of Japanese knotweed are extremely persistent and hard to eradicate.

Prevention and Control: As with most invasive plants, Japanese knotweed can quickly inhabit disturbed ecosystems. One of the best ways to prevent its colonization is to ensure that disturbed habitats are rehabilitated with native vegetation before knotweed can invade. Single young plants can be pulled by hand depending on soil conditions and root development. If all of the root system isn’t removed, resprouting can occur. For small initial populations beyond single plants, or in environmentally sensitive areas where herbicides cannot be used, grubbing with a pulaski or similar tool to remove all of the roots after cutting back the standing vegetation can be an effective control measure. All parts of the removed plants should be bagged and disposed of in a secure location. It is best if knotweed not be mown or cut with weed trimmers as the pieces of the plant can easily get moved around and resprout, spreading, rather than Extension Connection

controlling the plant. Chemical controls for Japanese knotweed include application of glyphosate and triclopyr herbicides to freshly cut stems or to foliage.

Submitted by Colleen Monaghan, Executive Director I am pleased to share that we will welcome Dayna Valenti of Glen Spey, to the Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC) family on September 8th as the new Community Horticulture Program Educator.

of Orange to secure grant funds to build a school community garden and green cart concession stand with a cadre of volunteers, and was praised as an energetic and knowledgeable presenter by her references.

Dayna has thirteen years’ experience as an educator at the secondary level with subject matter expertise in earth and environmental science, biology, geology, and weather and climate.

Dayna volunteers at her local town park gardens, AYSO, and has volunteered teaching gardening programs to pre-kindergarten, second, and third graders. Dayna has also assisted on Project GET WET in collaboration with Orange County Water Authority assisting 150 students in collecting and testing the water supply in the Middletown area.

She has worked in partnership with the Healthy Start Coalition

We feel Dayna will be a wonderful addition to the CCESC staff, Master Gardener Volunteers, and the community.

CCESC Welcomes Fire Mountain Kitchen LLC to the EaT Kitchen Submitted by Erica Lynch, EaT Kitchen Assistant James Lomax is a full time resident in Bethel NY. This spring he formed Fire Mountain Kitchen, LLC after retiring from medicine. He attended Purdue University and Indiana University School of Medicine. After briefly practicing in Indianapolis he moved to Manhattan in 1977. He was on the faculty of the SUNY Downstate Medical Center, chair of the department of family practice at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. He practiced occupational and environmental medicine for 25 years in New Jersey before retiring this year. In his spare time, he enjoys growing and canning garden vegetables and fruits to be given away at holidays.

Jim comes from a rural background and canning was a family activity. He decided to start a relish and pickle business and was fortunate to be close to Cornell Extension's EaT Kitchen. The condiment recipes that he uses, especially the bread and butter style pickles, goes back a number of generations. Chutney is a favorite relish and his fruit chutney recipe was modified from a traditional Indian cookbook. Tomato jam comes from his sister. His plans are to expand his selections and sell them at food fairs and specialty shops, eventually moving into wholesale production.

Submitted by SueAnn Boyd, Master Food Preserver Childhood obesity is a major public health problem. About 1 of every 5 (17%) children in the United States has obesity and certain groups of children are more affected than others.

While there is no single or simple solution, National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month provides an opportunity for learning about ways to prevent and address this serious health concern.

Children who have obesity are more likely to have obesity as adults. This can lead to lifelong physical and mental health problems, including diabetes and increased risk of certain cancers.

Children who have obesity face more bullying and stigma. Childhood obesity is influenced by many factors. For

such as fruit and vegetables in place of foods with higher-calorie ingredients, such as added sugars and solid fats.

Addressing obesity can start in the home, but also requires the support of communities. We can all take part in the effort to encourage more children to be physically active and eat a healthy diet. Working together, states, communities, schools, child care providers, and parents can help make healthier food, beverages, and physical activity the easy choice for children and adolescents to help prevent childhood obesity.

Submitted by Sean Welsh, Family & Youth Development Team Coordinator Once again the Sullivan County Youth Fair was held in conjunction with the Grahamsville Little World’s Fair. A fantastic community of people came together to showcase the hard work of 4-H youth members and volunteers after a busy year spent on projects, events, activities, and club meetings.

Lots and lots of work behind the scenes goes into the fair. 4-H’ers, volunteers, and CCESC staff work on projects; spend the week before opening day preparing the upper ring, livestock barn, horse barn, and youth building; and clean and prepare the fairgrounds for project evaluations, exhibits, and shows. Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC) and the 4-H staff are so very grateful to over 100 volunteers who assisted with all aspects of the Youth Fair. Without your contributions the fair would be an impossible task. Donations and sponsorships from area businesses help offset the cost of fair, and so a huge thank-you goes to all businesses who support the 4-H Youth Development program through those contributions.

The showcase for Sullivan County 4H’ers began on Wednesday, August 12th with an opportunity for still project evaluations. CCESC educators were assisted by over 25 volunteers as still projects were presented and evaluated for the local Youth Fair, with 50 exhibits selected for the NYS Fair.

Animal shows began on Thursday, August 13th with the 4-H Horse program NYS Fair Qualifying Show and the Sullivan County 4-H Rabbit Show. Even though there were no poultry projects this year due to Avian Flu concerns in the Midwest, there were youth on hand to discuss poultry showmanship and to educate the public on birds. Hopefully next year poulPage 8

try projects will be able to return to the Sullivan County Youth Fair. There was a Sheep Show for the first time in several years, with six animals coming to the fair for the show and two being sold in the Sunday Livestock Auction. The Dairy Show was a great event to witness and should be recommended to any novice fairgoer.

Watching the youth handle their animals with skill and care, while they answer to the judge’s requests, is truly something special.

The Beef Show held on Sunday the 16th was a great chance to learn about the beef industry nationally and locally, as many Black Angus cows were on display. Swine were exhibited too, and the public had an opportunity to ask questions about all the animals on display. Sullivan County 4-H VIP Bakers donated 15 pies for the Pie Auction, which brought in $1,595.00 for the 4-H program. A huge thanks to the pie bakers, volunteer auctioneers, and bidders! The Livestock Auction for 4-H scholarships was another success. All livestock were sold over market value and the Livestock Auction Committee is already making plans to build on the auction for next year. To cap off the weekend, Sullivan County Dairy Promotion and the Dairy Princess were on hand, donating a special ice cream social with all the fixings, to celebrate the CCESC 4H Youth Development program youth members, volunteers, and parents.

Once again, many thanks to all our donors and supporters, judges, parents, volunteers, youth members, and businesses who supported this year’s fair. It was a fun and educational way for the public to engage with Sullivan County 4-H. If you missed it, we look forward to your support and participation next year! Jean Dittmar Recognized as a Dedicated Caregiver Submitted by Bonnie Lewis, Dependent Care Educator

Jean Dittmar of Liberty was surprised by her friends with a party and picnic, recognizing her years of dedicated and unconditional caregiving that Jean has lovingly provided for her husband Tom. Two members from the Caring for Caregivers Committee also attended the occasion to honor Jean upon the recommendation of her friends and neighbors.

Jean was nominated by friends and family in her Liberty Presbyterian Church congregation during the spring search for an outstanding caregiver in our county.

The committee received a thoughtful letter from the congregants including sentiments such as, “Jean is very dedicated to her husband and his care”. Jean has been described as an angel and a saint, with such patience, love, and faith that makes her an extra special person and very worthy of the recognition of a super caregiver!”

The Caring for Caregivers Committee was created earlier this year to seek family caregivers who should be acknowledged and honored. Serving on that committee are Bonnie Lewis, RN, Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC) Dependent Care Educator, and Jodi Goodman, Catskill Regional Medical Center Director of Community Services, and June Lombardi, fellow nurse & former family caregiver.

The Caring for Caregivers Committee, realizing caregivers often neglect their own needs and selflessly give of them-

Vet Science Series July 29th

The final Vet Science class was held on July 29th. Eighteen youth had the opportunity to take a tour of Catskill Veterinary Services in Monticello by Dr. Joe D’Abbraccio and his vet techs.

The youth were able to see how the equipment is used and there were several specimens to examine. Participants were presented with a certificate of completion at the end of the tour.

Fourteen youth were registered for the second class of the CCESC Jr. Master Gardener series which took place at Ft. Delaware in Narrowsburg. Master Gardener Volunteers joined staff in offering presentations on how fabric is made from wool and the role of plants in the world of textiles. Participants enjoyed a reading of “Weaving the Rainbow”. Master Gardener Volunteers provided youth tactile experiences with live cotton and flax plants as well as product fibers. There was a visit to the herbal garden to locate common dye and insect repellent plants. The Ft. Delaware State Park staff in period costume discussed everyday colonial life, and showed the youth the flax room, textile equipment, and a dye pot of steeping wool over an open fire. Participants ended the educational program with a handson experience led by 4-H staff in learning how to create their own felted items from wool.

Where to start!? Friends of CCESC, Conor and Kate Crickmore, hosted 30 enthusiastic seasoned and beginning farmers on a tour of their profitable farm operation, Neversink Farm. Participants experienced on-the-farm education in topics including crop rotation, efficient planting methods, organics, tips and tricks of the trade, and successful farm management practices. The tour highlighted how to use proper field management and high tunnel systems to efficiently and profitably grow vegetables in Sullivan County. With just six years and 1.5 acres in production, Neversink Farm provides for the livelihood of the Crickmore family, employs three full time employees, and sells most of their year round produce to restaurants. Their success is a model for aspiring produce farmers in the county and shows that with proper management and cultivation techniques, vegetable farming can be a viable agricultural economic driver for interested farmers. Thanks to Conor and Kate for welcoming us to your farm and for enhancing our understanding of viable vegetable farming strategies in Sullivan County!

(Continued from page 4) in value of production are expected?; and (4) What increases in costs are expected? The first two items combine to increase profit, while the third and fourth items combine to decrease profit.

Costs and changes in profit resulting from key variable alternatives were estimated. For costs of production estimates, N application at spring green-up was set at 0 or 75 pounds per acre (two scenarios, based on early research), while expected winter cereal forage yield was 1, 1.5, 2, 3, or 3.5 tons DM per acre (five scenarios, reflecting yield distribution realistic for New York). To estimate the sensitivity of expected changes in profit, we used a forage value of $130, $180, $200, or $220 per ton DM (four scenarios), and defined expected change in corn silage yield following the winter cereal crop in the

rotation as 0 (no decline), -0.25, or -1 ton DM per acre (three scenarios).

Costs of Production Costs of production per ton of winter cereal DM varied by scenario and by other key factors, including expected winter cereal yield and N needs for the winter cereal. For scenarios where the winter forage averaged 2 ton DM per acre without the need for extra N at green-up, costs of production estimates averaged $94 per ton DM and ranged from $83 for no-till in Northern NY to $118 per ton DM for conventional tillage scenarios also in Northern NY. When 75 lbs of N per acre was needed to obtain the same 2 tons DM/acre winter forage yield, costs of production estimates averaged $122 per ton DM and ranged from $111 for no-till in Northern NY to $145 per ton DM for Northern NY conventional tillage scenarios.

Expected Changes in Profit and Breakeven Yields Expected changes in income included the value of production assigned to the winter cereal harvested as forage and expected change in value of corn silage production where appropriate. Expected increases in costs included labor; machinery repairs and maintenance; fuel, oil and grease; fertilizer where appropriate; seeds; spray and other crop expenses. The analyses also reflect depreciation, but only when it was considered to be use-related, that is, when use affects the expected years owned and/or expected salvage value.

Expected changes in profit averaged across the three farm sizes varied by scenario and by other key factors (Table 3).

Where 75 lbs of N was needed at green -up to generate 2 tons of DM per acre and a 1 ton DM per acre yield decline occurred for the corn seeded after the winter cereals due to a delayed planting date, expected changes in profit ranged from -$44 to +$16 per acre for the Northern NY conventional and Western NY no-till scenarios, respectively, and averaged -$2 per acre across all scenarios. Where corn yield deceased by 1 ton DM per acre and 75 lbs N per acre was needed at green-up for the winter cereal, the break-even winter forage yields averaged 2 tons DM per acre, and ranged from 2.3 to 1.9 tons DM per acre for the NNY conventional and the two no-till scenarios, respectively (Table 3). If in the same scenario, corn silage yield was not impacted, the break-even winter forage yield averaged 1 ton DM per acre. This was further reduced to 0.7 tons of DM if no N was needed at green-up of the winter forage (Table 3).

lated to meeting forage needs of the herd over time. Costs of production analyses suggest that double cropped winter cereals likely compare favorably to costs and/or values of alternative

forages over a range of expected winter cereal yields. Partial budget analyses suggest that adoption of double cropped winter cereals as forages could be an economically beneficial change in practice for dairy farms (expected changes in profit exceed zero over a range of key factors). Break-even analyses suggest that producers have to obtain yields around 2 tons DM per acre to ensure that a double cropped winter cereal’s expected benefits are greater than or equal to expected changes in costs under the most demanding, least favorable set of assumptions (i.e., 75 lbs N/acre at green-up and a corn silage yield reduction of 1 ton DM per acre). Results are sensitive to a number of factors including expected winter cereal yield, expected value of forage, spring N addition needed, expected effect on corn silage yield and others.

The directory highlights the importance of, and offers guidance for, supporting agriculture in our community, and eating fresh, healthy foods with your family.

This brochure indicates whether each market site accepts benefits for the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program; Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP); Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); and/or Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) fruit and vegetable checks. In addition, there is a section printed in both English and Spanish that explains the process of using FMNP coupons, WIC checks, and SNAP food stamps (EBT) to shop at farmers’ markets in the area.

Farmers’ markets can be found in and around Sullivan County from May until October, with locally -sourced products including fresh vegetables and fruit, herbs, dairy, eggs, meat, baked goods, preserved food, cut flowers, handcrafted soap, crafts, and more. Some markets feature live music from local talent and educational programming for families.

Volunteer Spotlight - Judith Maidenbaum

4-H Member Spotlight - Michael D. Mike has been involved in the 4-H program since he began as a five year old “Cloverbud” in the Neversink Newts 4-H club. He is a past member of the 4-H Puppy Pals and is now a dedicated member of the 4-H Teen Group.

Judith Maidenbaum, owner of the Fat Lady Café and The Beekman House in Kauneonga Lake, NY graduated from CCESC Master Gardener (MG) Volunteer training in 2014. Since then, she has donated countless hours (and delicious meals) to the CCESC MG program. Judy is an entrepreneur locally renowned for her achievements in Kauneonga Lake making significant façade renovations, landscaping, and contributing to economic development.

Her important role in the community makes her an effective volunteer because she uses her ties to help spread the CCE mission throughout Sullivan County.

Judy has gone above and beyond over the last several months volunteering whenever and wherever she can, even during her busy restaurant season. She has donated hours towards covering the Master Gardener Helpline answering gardening questions from the public and participated in our popular Junior Master Gardener series currently underway.

One of the most notable contributions Judy has made is teaching basic gardening classes at seasonal camps around the county in partnership with Sullivan Renaissance. She is pictured here (photography by Cara Kowalski) at a camp teaching the girls about the importance of nurturing the land and using it to grow food and flowers. Mike has brought a wide range of interests to his 4-H project work including wildlife and environmental science, astronomy, cooking, community service, science, technology, and engineering. A longtime member of the Junior Civil Air Patrol of Sullivan County, one of Mike’s favorite pastimes is flying planes.

Mike has become an asset to the 4H program by moving beyond his personal project pursuits to consistently giving his time and support to county 4-H initiatives. Highlights include serving as a Teen Leader for 4-H Public Presentation events, hours of work selling popcorn and Bessie Bingo tickets during the past three Youth Fairs to raise money for 4-H Achievement Day, and time invested in weeding, planting, and mulching the 4-H sponsored Pearl Gold site at CRMC’s Woodland Wildings Garden. This year Mike was also involved with Cornell University’s “Building a Community Legacy Together” research project, coordinated by CCESC’s Caregiver Resource Center (CRC) and supported by Sullivan County 4-H. In addition, Mike returned for a second year as 4-H Teen Assistant for the Annual Caregiver Retreat sponsored by CCESC CRC at Frost Valley Conference Center, offering ice-breakers, hands-on activities, a campfire, and s’mores for participating caregivers. We are thankful for Mike’s history of reliable support and look forward to many more years of his involvement!

4-H Volunteer Spotlight Rich Sheldon Mr. Richard Sheldon is chairman of the 4-H Strategy Committee, a Cornell Cooperative Extension Program Committee member and the lead 4-H Shooting Sports volunteer. His commitment to the agency has been unwavering and supportive in the guidance of 4-H programming.

One of Rich’s big successes this past year was in securing a grant from the Friends of the NRA for updating 4-H Shooting Sports equipment. The 4-H Shooting Sports Trebuchet Project, which will be featured at the NYS Fair, was an example of volunteers working together to ensure a safe project with a strong focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Rich would surely be quick to point out that he was assisted by other key instructors (Jenne Sheldon, Robert Lacey, Ed Lutz, Bill Cockshutte, Katelyn Smith, Tom Gain), business supporters, and an advisory team of engineers to successfully complete the project. His leadership of the team has secured NYS recognition of the trebuchet project as the state-wide model for other shooting sports programs.

Thank you Richard for all the work you have dedicated to Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County’s 4-H Youth Development program.

Farm Spotlight - Channery Hill Farm Established in 2011, Channery Hill Farm, owned by Jen McGlashan & Kai Brothers, is located in Callicoon Center.

Channery Hill is a small, family operated farm selling a variety of vegetables, garlic/garlic powder, salad dressings, mustards, salsas, ketchups, kale chips, and horseradish. They use sustainable practices such as seed saving, companion planting, and cover crops to aid in the diversification of their farm. New for 2015, Channery Hill Farm will be using CCE’s EaT Kitchen to process their value added products.

CCESC Afterschool Club Leader The CCESC Afterschool Club Leader provides CCE/4-H curriculum based programming one time per week, in the after school environment, at identified school buildings, from October - May. Responsibilities:  Works with CCESC staff on an annual calendar.  Prepares materials & facilitates weekly, curriculum based youth development sessions for up to 15 youth in the afterschool setting.  Ensures that information about meetings, events, activities, other opportunities and program or policy updates are communicated to members and parents in a timely manner.  Ensures that all member participation reports are submitted to CCESC monthly.  Keeps the 4-H Extension Educator(s) informed about club activities, special accomplishments, and problems.  Ensures that the club and its membership play an active and visible role in the community.  Ensures that volunteers, club members and their parents are aware of and follow all CCE youth protection and risk management policies and emergency procedures.

DEC Adopts New Rules for Antlerless Deer Hunting The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) adopted new regulations to address deer populations in portions of the state with too many or too few deer,.

To achieve the desired deer population levels, the allowable harvest of antlerless deer is being increased in all or portions of Suffolk, Orange, Ulster, Sullivan, Westchester, Albany, Niagara, Erie, Wyoming, Orleans, Genesee, Monroe, Livingston, Steuben, Wayne, Ontario, Yates, Seneca, and Cayuga Counties.

In several of these areas, tick-borne diseases are of greater concern and high deer populations have been linked to increases in ticks and associated tick -borne diseases.
