Submitted by Michelle Lipari, Ag and 4-H Community Educator In the past month, CCE Ag staff had the opportunity to visit several farms in the area. Of those farms were Geiger Dairy Farm in Jeffersonville, NY and Stone Ridge Farm in Livingston Manor, NY. Both bovine enterprises had unique and passionate views on farming.

Geiger Dairy Farm- Stefan and Cindy Geiger’s dairy farm sits on top of the hills of Jeffersonville overlooking some of the best views in the county. The farm hosts sheep and poultry, but the main focus is Stefan’s 60 milking Holsteins and 70 replacement heifers. These girls produce enough milk to provide for the Geiger family. Also in production on the farm is hay and solar energy. There are 130 acres available on the property. During the summer months, the majority of it is used for making hay to feed the herd until the following summer, where the process is then repeated.

When driving by the farm you can’t help but notice the roofs of their barns. They are covered with 134 solar panels.

With grant assistance and the goal of sustainability in mind, the Geigers were able to install the panels successfully.

These panels produce enough solar energy to run the farm’s electric and then some.

View from Stone Ridge Farm with pond Another farm that was toured was Stone Ridge Farm, owned by Jack and Sally Abrams. This farm’s main focus is high quality meat production. Jack has found his passion for Polled Herefords after much research and careful thought.

Currently in his herd, they have 20 females, two bulls, and four calves. Jack and Sally have been farming for the past 35 years and are continually on the search for new learning experiences. The Stone Ridge Farm’s beef herd over the years has accumulated tremendous awards, such as Dams of Distinction, high indexing bulls, show ring awards, along with champion cow, calf and bulls. There are many more to list. Something unique about Jack’s cows is that they are tall. They stand much larger than your average Hereford and finish with an impressive live weight. Agriculture in the past has been trending on shorter cattle with a stockier appearance. This is said to help the processing facilities have a more uniform animal. The farm is a full cow-calf operation with improvements to help keep an eye on the animals from a video monitoring system to keep a careful watch at calving time, to a well thought-out system of gates and chutes to keep everyone safe. This property sits on about 100 acres with man-made ponds throughout.

Several other countries have used electric fencing with great success for several decades now. Electric fencing is more economical than standard barbed wire or hog wire fencing. Electric fencing also allows for temporary fencing to subdivide pastures, which can increase the stocking rate and forage utilization and decrease parasite problems through rotational grazing.

ed. Three or four ground rods, six feet long, should be used for proper grounding. These rods should be placed in parallel approximately six feet apart. Most fences are constructed with only one ground rod (this is adequate only when the ground is extremely wet) and will not be sufficient to ensure proper current flow.

Why has electric fencing not caught on in the United States?

The main reason is the past failures producers have experienced due to utilizing poor quality fence chargers and not understanding the basics of electric fencing. The basic principles of fence construction, grounding, and current flow must be understood to ensure correct fence design with minimal maintenance and maximum current flow.

Fence Chargers and Grounding The major mistake that is made in electric fencing is the use of poor quality, “cheaper” fence chargers and the improper grounding of the fence. The fence charger is the most important purchase in construction of the electric fence. Electric fence chargers have become much more sophisticated than the older type low powered fence energizers. Electric fence for sheep can be maintained even in remote areas with the new solar powered chargers. Voltage must be maintained at all times if an electric fence is to be effective. The new high voltage energizers produce a very short, .003 second, high-energy pulse. The high-energy pulse charges even a long length of heavily weeded fence with a shock that livestock respect. The short pulse limits the overall energy, so posts are not burned and the wires are safe, though painful to touch. The short pulse also removes the chances of fire when grass contacts the wire.

The most important component of electric fence construction is the proper grounding of the system. With a poor ground, the electric impulse could not complete its circuit and the fence would be completely ineffective. Improper grounding is the number one reason for electric fence failure and the main reason for producers’ in the United States reluctance to use electric fencing. More than 80 percent of the electric fence systems in the U.S. are inadequately groundOctober, 2014

Permanent Electric Fencing Permanent electric fencing with five to eight properly spaced strands is excellent for holding sheep. This fencing can be constructed with high-tensile wire and various types of creosote pressure treated posts or fiberglass posts for about one-half of the material and labor cost of an equivalent woven wire fence.

Experience has shown that a seven or eight wire fence that is approximately 48 inches high is ideal for sheep and cattle.

This fence will not only keep sheep in, but will also work well for keeping predators out. Spacing will depend on the number of wires used. A good fence design for a seven-wire fence would begin with the bottom wire charged 6 inches above the ground. The next two wires would be spaced at 5 inch intervals and would be a ground wire, followed by a charged wire. The next wire would be a ground wire spaced 6 inches up, followed by a charged wire and a ground wire at 8 inch intervals. The top wire would then be 10 inches up and would be a charged wire. This fence would be 48 inches high and should do a good job of livestock control.

The wires used in these fences should be smooth 12 ½ gauge or 14 gauge wires. If building a permanent fence, the 12 ½ gauge would be a much better choice. The 12 ½ gauge wire is much stronger and will carry the necessary voltage better than the lighter 14 gauge wire. In any case, when this fence is built from smooth wires it is important to put a “wire strainer” on each wire to take up the slack and keep the wires tight. The principal idea of the wire is to give an electrical shock to the livestock, and the actual strength of the wire does not prevent animals from going through. Consequently, all that is needed is to space the wires properly and keep them tight. This makes it possible on level ground to put fence posts 40 to 50 feet apart. By doing this and using high-tensile smooth wire, it is possible to build a fence for much less than the cost of a woven wire fence and the

(continued from page 5) fence is a much better deterrent to the movement of dogs and coyotes than a woven wire fence.

Temporary Electric Fencing Recent interest in pasture management involving intensive or controlled grazing systems has created a need for semipermanent or temporary sub-division fence systems. These allow forage growth, quick grazing, internal parasite reduction, and regrowth of forage for future grazing.

There are many different types of temporary fencing, which includes lightweight, high-tensile smooth wire, polywire, polytape, or flexible netting. The lightweight, high-tensile wire would be best utilized when the fence is semipermanent, such as around a wheat field for the winter and spring. This wire is not well utilized when constant moving is necessary. The polywire and polytape is best utilized in a rotational or controlled grazing environment when the fence must be moved more often.

A two or three wire temporary fence around a wheat pasture or for controlled grazing in any kind of pasture will normally be sufficient. Most producers using temporary fencing feel that all wires should be charged and no ground wires are necessary. If a two wire system is used, the three wires spaced at 10 inch intervals work very well.

The new polywire or ploytape system has made temporary fencing for controlled and intensive grazing a very feasible alternative. With the use of portable reels and quick set-up features, the temporary fences can be moved quickly and are also very efficient at keeping livestock in.

Rejuvenating Existing Fences Old fences, which have deteriorated to the extent that they need complete replacement, can be rejuvenated to last for many more years by attaching offset brackets and an elec-

trified wire on one or both sides of the old fence. All single offset wires should be attached at two thirds the height of the animals to be controlled. The old fence can be used as the “ground” wire and will work well to complete the circuit necessary for good sheep control. Charging barbed wire is not a good practice for two reasons: 1) livestock caught in charged barbed wire can literally be shocked to death; 2) barbed wire is not as conductive as the smoothhigh-tensile wire and will not carry an adequate current for sheep.

Training Sheep to Electric Fence It is necessary that sheep become adjusted to and learn to respect electric fences. All animals need time and space to quietly discover that electrified fences are “hot”. If they can be first exposed shortly after they are shorn, they will have less wool for insulation.

Sheep should be turned into an area that is controlled by electric fence and allowed to discover the fence in their own time. Sheep that are crowded near electric fences frequently get spooked through the fence. Certain ewes are easily spooked and will require more time to get adjusted to the electric fencing. The minimum time required is 12 hours and most animals will be fully trained in 48 hours. It is also true that a multi-wire fence will teach sheep to respect electric fencing much quicker than a one or two wire fence.

Submitted by Melinda Meddaugh, Ag & Natural Resources Issue Leader On September 8th, Melinda Meddaugh, CCE SC Agricultue & Natural Resources Leader, and Michelle Lipari, CCE SC Agriculture Educator, coordinated the 2014 Corn Plot Demo Field Day, in partnership with Cochecton Mills, Delaware Valley Home and Garden in Callicoon, Honesdale Farm and Garden, and Penn State Extension of Wayne County. The Corn Plot Field Day was held this year at My Place Rd, adjacent to Cochecton Mills. Corn was the main topic of the day, with over a dozen varieties of field trials presented. In attendance were over 60 producers and members of the farming community looking to gain insight into the results of researched and planted corn varieties. The overwhelming majority of the varieties stood seven or more feet tall and offered ears fit for producing high quality feeds. With this year slated to produce a great crop due to the weather, farmers had the opportunity to improve their crop varieties. In addition to the field trial, NYS Integrated Pest Management Educator Ken Wise presented on corn rootworm and late season corn management, helping participants to earn two NYS DEC Pesticide Re-Certification credits in both New York and Pennsylvania.

Submitted by Susan Dollard, Master Gardener Coordinator The fourth and final class in the Jr. Master Gardener series was held on September 17th at 5:30 at CCE. It was our harvest class. The 22 children who have attended these classes gathered their vegetable harvest with Master Gardener, Pamela Zaitchick, from our Teaching Garden. It became a nutritious snack for all to share.

Next, the children were taught how to make their own pressed flower arrangements

by Master Gardener, Pat Yelle. Her husband, Jack, watercolor artist, Jack assisted her. The children made a beautiful design, each one unique. We supplied each child a frame to complete their project.

The children were treated to a story time. Master Gardener, Diane Foster, read a very funny story called Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds. It tells of a group of chicks who are tired of chicken feed and decide to raid the farmer’s garden to make salsa. The children and parents loved the book.

After reading about chickens enjoying salsa, Master Gardener, Judith Maidenbaum, made salsa with the children using ingredients from the teaching garden. We all enjoyed chips and salsa, not chicks and salsa. We are hopeful that a 4-H group will form with an emphasis on Horticulture, so the Master Gardener Volunteers can continue children classes throughout the year.

My allergies have been really bad this fall. What does ragweed look like?

Controlling Ragweed

A. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America Rag Weed (AAFA), some 10 to 20 percent of Americans begin to suffer from ragweed allergy or hay fever every autumn. Sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, itchy eyes, nose, and throat, and trouble sleeping make life miserable for these people. Some of them also must deal with asthma attacks.

The plant you brought in is goldenrod not ragweed. They are two entirely different plants. Many folks falsely blame goldenrod for causing fall allergies. Both plants bloom from late summer to early fall, but goldenrod, true to its name, produces masses of bright golden flowers on singlestemmed plants. Ragweeds have small, unremarkable green flowers. The real culprits go fairly unnoticed, as they blend in. There are at least 17 species of ragweed; common ragweed (ambrosia artemisiifolia) and giant ragweed (ambrosia trifida) are the ones you are most likely to find in our area.

Common ragweed is an annual, has finely cut, lacey green leaves, and grows from one to six feet tall. Its giant cousin has bolder leaves and has been known to reach heights over fifteen feet tall, in one season. Ragweed is a plant that grows throughout the United States. They are most common in the Eastern states and the Midwest.

However, goldenrods are attractive sources of nectar for bees, flies, wasps, and butterflies’ goldenrods are, in some places, held as a sign of good luck or good fortune. Unfortunately, goldenrod is considered to be a weed by many in North America, but they are prized as garden plants in Europe. Goldenrod only began to gain some acceptance in Page 10

Ragweed can be controlled using various techniques.

Ragweed grows best in newly tilled areas. The best way to prevent its spread is to Goldenrod keep idle land covered with grasses or other harmless plants. For small areas of infestation, pulling or cutting the plant to the ground is recommended. This of course should be done before August 1st to prevent pollination and seed formation. For larger areas, there are a variety of herbicides that can do the job more efficiently than by mechanical means. These products can be found in your nearest lawn and garden center. Follow all manufacturer instructions and safety procedures.

What is the best time to plant garlic? Sam, Wurtsboro

A.

Gardeners often ask this question. According to Cornell, early October is a relatively good time since it allows time for the cloves to produce some top growth and develop roots adequate enough to withstand the heaving effects of freezing and thawing soils. Poorly rooted cloves will often be found lying on top of the ground early spring.

Mulching with straw or other mulch (do not use leaves), or mounding soil over the rows will help garlic plants survive winter conditions. Of course, a good snow cover will do the same. The mulch or excess soil should be removed as soon as growth resumes in the early spring.

They are shown here with some of their many creations. The also made cement cast leaves with the class. Hypertufa is an anthropic rock made from various aggregates bonded together using Portland cement. Hyper tufa is popular for making garden ornaments, pots and land forms. It was a very successful class!

Sullivan County Energy Symposium is $ET for October!

If a homeowner’s renewable energy system produces more power than needed, the extra power can be sent back to the utility company through the grid (electrical lines) and the homeowner can be credited or refunded by the local utility for that amount of power. This credit for excess power is called Net Metering.

“GET $ET” Energy Symposium Teaches Public, Home Owners and Businesses How to ‘Save Energy Together’

More than 40 U.S. states today have already passed laws which allow net metering. In most states, the excess generated power is applied to the next month’s homeowner's bill and is designated in kilowatt hours (kWh), the same as a normal electricity bill. Utility companies in a state could allow net metering due to the state regulations or may voluntarily offer it on their own (SEIA. n.d.).

A net metering agreement and installation requires special arrangements of a resident with the local utility company.

Each state and utility company have different requirements and allow different sized systems to qualify for net metering. The amount of money paid for the excess energy generated through net metering can vary from one utility company to another. Many utility companies buy back the excess power at the same rate that the company charges the homeowner for the same quantity of power. Some utility companies charge a slightly higher rate to the homeowner than they buy back, because of extra charges for the grid connections and other administration costs of the program.

In context of solar as the renewable energy, the net metering policies have had a substantial impact on its adoption by the state residents. A nationwide solar grid map has been developed by a California based non-profit organization, Vote Solar, grading all U.S. states for how well the states are doing as a result of their net metering policies. Another nationwide map on Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) website depicts net metering solar policies applicable as of July 2013 in all U.S. states.

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY – Vendors are now being sought for the Sullivan County “GET $ET” Energy Symposium to be held Wednesday Oct 22nd, 2014 from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm on the SUNY Sullivan campus, Loch Sheldrake. Organized by RUPCO, an independent contractor for the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), partners for the event include a host of county-wide organizations: SUNY Sullivan, Sullivan County Planning, Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County, NYSERDA’s Mid-Hudson Economic Development Growth Extension (EDGE), and others. Symposium topics will include residential and commercial energy programs, renewable energy resources, as well as programs that allow homeowners, renters, landlords, not-for-profits and small businesses and municipalities to more easily participate in energy efficiency programs offered by NYSERDA. Families Can Hike for Solar Energy in Celebration of CCE Centennial Year Saturday, October 18th ~

Families and volunteers are invited to hike to raise funds for solar panels and support youth programming at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC)’s Turtle Spring Nature Trail on Saturday, October 18, 2014 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The easy-to-moderate level hiking loop is about half a mile long and includes a spring-fed pond, a nature-themed Little Lending Library, a StoryWalk®, and a lush canopy of fall foliage. In the event of heavy rain, the hike will be postponed until Saturday, October 25.

For a $10 donation per family, the public can help raise money, exercise, and enjoy educational activities and exhibits set up behind the Gerald J. Skoda Extension Education Center on 64 Ferndale-Loomis Road in Liberty. Participants who register and pay in advance will receive a special gift. Everyone will earn a bonus bag for attending. Light refreshments will be available.

Colleen Monaghan is the New CCE Executive Director The Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC) has announced the appointment of Colleen Monaghan of Walker Valley, NY as Executive Director effective October 6, 2014.

Most recently, Monaghan has been program, planning, and contract management coordinator for the Orange County Youth Bureau. In addition, she has served as a key administrator and program coordinator for a large county-wide initiative funded by the NYS Department of Health. She brings expertise in youth development, family and consumer science, and a personal interest in agriculture and homesteading. She has worked professionally with Cornell Cooperative Extension Orange County and is familiar with CCESC. As a partner with Cornell University’s College of Human Ecology Bronfenbrenner Center for Transitional Research ACT for Youth Center of Excellence, she has participated in several research projects giving her first-hand knowledge of the research and support available to Sullivan County through Cornell. She has provided training in leadership, management and supervision, collaboration and planning, evaluation, and youth and family development across the state and region.

Monaghan lives on the border of Sullivan and Ulster Counties where she raises chickens and pigs and produces fruits and vegetables. She often spends time at a family farm and camp in Livingston Manor.

“The most exciting thing for me is becoming a part of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County community. From the tour of the beautiful farms across the county, 4-Her smiles, to my first interactions with the staff and volunteers; it is encouraging to be partnering with a community of learners committed to preserving and enriching the quality of life here. I look forward to getting to know everyone and leading and nurturing Cooperative Extension into its future,” said Monaghan.

Monaghan has extensive experience in writing grants and managing service contracts for nonprofit agencies. She formerly directed programs for Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Orange County. She holds a bachelor of arts in applied anthropology from SUNY Oneonta and a master’s in public administration from Marist College.

The CCESC Board of Directors appointed Monaghan after conducting a nationwide search for a new executive director following the resignation of its then executive Gregory Sandor. During the process, the organization was headed by Interim Director Pat Claiborne.

“We have found just the right person to fill the gap left by Greg and Pat,” said board president Joan Howard, “Colleen has experience in and is committed to all the areas central to our mission and has the leadership traits to continue our work. She has already begun to meet with both long-time commercial farmers and new niche market producers. We’re confident she will lead us forward into our next 100 years.”

More mushrooms than ever are available at your local farmers market and grocery stores. Mushrooms are not a true vegetable in the sense that it does not have any leaves, roots, or seeds, and really does not need any light to grow.

So what exactly is a mushroom? It is a fungus, which grows in the dark and creates more mushrooms by releasing spores. Since mushrooms are grown from microscopic spores, mushroom farming is a step-by-step process that involves: 

two phases of composting



spawning (mushroom farmers collecting the spores)



casing (a soil mixture that acts as a water reservoir that is placed on top of the mushroom spores)



pinning (the growth stage where the shape of the mushroom forms)



harvesting

Mushrooms are available all year long and although there are many different varieties, selecting any kind of mushrooms are easy. You should look for firm, moisture-free (not dry), unblemished caps, free of mold. Place purchased loose mushrooms in a paper bag in the refrigerator. Airtight plastic bags tend to retain moisture and will accelerate spoilage. Properly stored mushrooms will last for approximatly five days. Mushrooms can be frozen but they must be cleaned, cooked, and placed in a ½ cup or 1 cup container to freeze. Don't forget to mark the date on the container; frozen mushrooms will last several months. Mushrooms are versatile and may be eaten raw or cooked whole, sliced or chopped. Certain varieties like shiitake and portabella must have their stems discarded or used as a flavoring agent, as they are often tough. When it comes time to use the mushrooms you have grown, proper cleaning is essential. Remove any bits of the debris on the surface by gently wiping the mushrooms with a damp cloth, paper towel, or soft brush. Best of all, mushrooms are so low in calories you can consume loads of them without destroying your diet.

Enjoy them in salads, soups, stews, and as a side with fish and rice.

Preparation Hint: Squeeze a small amount of lemon juice on the mushrooms to retain the color.

Roasted Mushrooms and Mixed Vegetables Serves 4 Each serving equals 1 1/4 cups of fruit or vegetables Ingredients: 1 pound mushrooms, mixed fresh, cut in large pieces (white, portabella or shiitake) 1 sweet red bell pepper cut in 1-inch chunks 1 red onion, medium, cut in 8 wedges 1 zucchini, large, cut in 1-inch chunks ½ Tbsp olive oil 1 tsp garlic, minced 1 tsp black pepper, ground Preheat oven to 450 F. In a 13x9x2 inch nonstick baking pan (or spray a conventional pan with vegetable cooking spray) place mushrooms, bell pepper, zucchini and onion.

Toss with olive oil, garlic, and black pepper. Bake uncovered, until mushrooms and vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Serve as a side dish, or toss with pasta or rice if desired.

Nutritional analysis per serving: Calories 70, Fat 8g, Calories from Fat 20, Protein 4g, Cholesterol 0mg, Fiber 2g, Sodium 10mg, Sugar 5g, Trans Fat 0g.

This summer, you may recall having heard the term “supermoon” in the news several times; three to be exact, and five total in 2014. The full moons of July 12, August 10, and most recently on September 9 were all classified as supermoons. A supermoon is the closest point the Moon is to Earth in its orbit. This full moon appears as much as 14% larger and 30% brighter than other full moons and causes higher tides than usual known as perigean spring tides due to the alignment of the Moon, Earth, and Sun. The term “supermoon” is thought to have been coined over 30 years ago by Richard Nolle but only recently has it become trendy. Nolle defined a supermoon as: “…a new or full moon which occurs with the moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit.”

The definition for “supermoon” is so generous that there can typically be four to six of them each year. Because the moon has recurring cycles, we can count on the full moon and perigee to come in concert in periods of about one year, one month, and 18 days. The Moon becomes full within a few hours of its closest approach to Earth about once a year on average.

The scientific term for the phenomenon is "perigee moon,” or “near Earth Moon”. Full moons vary in size because of the oval shape of the Moon's orbit. The Moon follows an elliptical path around Earth with one side ("perigee") about 50,000 km closer than the other ("apogee"). Full moons that occur on the perigee side of the Moon's orbit seem extra big and bright.

For reasons not fully understood by astronomers or psychologists, low-hanging moons look unnaturally large when they beam through trees, buildings, and other objects on the ground. This moon illusion will amplify a full Moon that's bigger to begin with.

Folklore holds that all kinds of unusual things happen under the light of a full moon. Supposedly, hospital admissions increase, the crime rate ticks upward, and people behave strangely. The idea that the full moon causes mental disorders was widespread in the Middle Ages. Even the word October, 2014

"lunacy," meaning "insanity," comes from the Latin word for "Moon."

The majority of modern studies, however, show no correlation between the phase of the moon and the incidence of crime, sickness, or human behavior. The truth is, the Moon is less influential than folklore would have us believe.

It's true that a perigee full moon brings with it extra-high tides, but according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this is nothing to worry about. In most places, lunar gravity at perigee pulls tide water only about an inch higher than usual. Local geography can amplify the effect to about six inches, not exactly something to write home about.

Sullivan County 4-H’ers will be supporting National 4-H Week with the following activities: 

The Annual 4-H Window Display Contest, an opportunity for 4-H’ers to feature the unique characteristics of their club, their project work and community engagement in a themed display for the public. Displays are judged for awards given on 4-H Achievement Day.

Youth will learn engineering concepts, develop math skills, learn about nutrition, and help solve a relevant, global issue.

Longtime 4-H volunteer, Beverly Hesse, is offering six fun scarf patterns to choose from; crochet one to donate and make another for oneself. The intergenerational project begins Friday, October 10, meeting 6:00-8:00 pm at the Gerald J. Skoda Extension Education Center on 64 Ferndale-Loomis Road in Liberty.

When Do Caregivers Need to Intervene?

In most situations, aging parents get along fine without their kids butting in. However, there are five crisis situations in which you need to step in to intervene and be " the bad guy”.

These are the instances: 1. Mom or Dad can no longer drive safely. The most obvious, and possibly the most dangerous, crisis situation is impaired driving. If Dad can no longer see street signs at night, if Mom’s reflexes have slowed down, it may be time to discuss giving up the keys.

If you’re lucky, a failed driving assessment may be all that’s needed to convince your parent or loved one that it’s no longer safe to be behind the wheel. Your parent’s physician or case manager may be a helpful ally in convincing him or her that it’s time.

If that doesn't do the trick, and the situation is clearly life threatening, it can be referred to the state Division of Motor Vehicles, which has the legal right, based on the assessment’s findings, to revoke a person’s driver’s license.

2. The house is not safe for aging in place. Running a close second: an unsafe home environment as evidenced by falls, 911 calls and/or trips to the emergency department or hospital. A home assessment can suggest home modifications, equipment and devices that can help improve safety. Simple things such as motion-sensor lights, grab bars and removal of throw rugs can reduce the risk of falls and make the home safer. Arranging in-home services can also help your parent remain safely at home. If your parent is isolated or upkeep of the home is too demanding, you may want to talk about downsizing. If health concerns require constant attention, supportive housing, assisted living, or even nursing home care may be the best option.

3. Your parent is not taking his or her medication properly. If your mother or father is either not taking the meds or incorrectly taking them, it’s time to step in. Either situation can have deadly consequences. Ask your parent's physician or pharmacist to explain the dangers. You can help by investing in an inexpensive pill case to sort medications by day of the week and time of day.

4. Cognitive decline is leading to bad financial decisions. Age-related cognitive decline or dementia can cause your parent to make bad decisions that may drain savings and retirement accounts and put future security and care at risk. It may be time to step in and manage your parent’s finances or at least be on the lookout for unusual activity. Older adults are at highest risk for financial exploitation, whether from scam artists or, more frequently, from other family members.

5. Your parent is displaying signs of depression. At any age, signs of depression should be taken seriously. Often, though, signs in older adults are overlooked or downplayed as normal aging. In fact, older adults are more likely to commit suicide than teenagers. If your loved one says she wishes she was dead, or feels like she is a burden to you, don’t brush it off. Seek help from a counselor or other mental health professional.

What to Do Before a Confrontation These five crises require action, and the quicker the better.

However, that might not mean immediately confronting your parent. Talk about your concerns with your parent’s physician, therapist, or social worker, your minister, or a friend.

Just talking about it with a third party may help you recognize alternatives, see options and find workable solutions. If the situation is linked to cognitive decline, your local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association or your local Area Agency on Aging can point you in the direction of programs and services that may help you solve the problem.

In some situations, a full or partial geriatric assessment can provide solutions that address the problem and improve your parent’s overall quality of life. If the situations above persist, it might be time to consider legally gaining control of your parent’s affairs.

Some products combine aspirin with other ingredients and are not meant for long-term use. · Tell your healthcare provider about all of the medicines and supplements you take. Your risk of bleeding may be higher if you use aspirin while also taking certain medicines, vitamins, or herbs. · There are many great resources, such as MedlinePlus, to get other tips on the daily use of aspirin.

4. Know the signs of a heart attack. Signs of a heart attack can be different for women than they are for men. · Chest pain (heavy ache or pressure) · Pain in your upper body (arms, neck, jaw, back or upper stomach) · Shortness of breath · Breaking out in a cold sweat · Unusual or unexplained tiredness · Feeling dizzy or light-headed · Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea)
