Greetings, friends!

Today, CCE Sullivan has 18 full-time and 11 part-time paid positions and hundreds of volunteers providing educational workshops, events, and activities in agricultural production, business retention and expansion; youth development and leadership; horticulture and gardening; worksite and school wellness; nutrition; farmers’ market promotion; food entrepreneurship, food preservation, and safety; community energy; adult caregiving; and more. A combination of county, state, federal, and foundation funding; local donations; and modest fees (with scholarships available for Sullivan County residents), support this diverse array of informal educational programming offered to help our neighbors and guests live a high quality of life.

Despite our growth in programming over the last four years, we have struggled to meet our capital campaign goals. This year we borrowed, at 5+% interest, more than $150,000 to repair the parking lot and build ADA compliant sidewalks. Parts of our 33-year-old HVAC system, most of which are estimated to be operating at less than 50% efficiency, continue to fail.

As we approach the year-end giving season, WE COULD REALLY USE YOUR HELP!! All contributions to our capital campaign are tax-deductible and will help us continue to offer Extension education and outreach programs in a safe, accessible, cost effective space.

At the end of this month, you’ll receive a direct mail campaign letter with a payment remittance envelop, but you can donate at any time by stopping in the office on Ferndale-Loomis Road in Liberty, heading to the website at sullivancce.org and clicking ‘donate’, or giving us a call at 845-292-6180.

In 2019, I’ll be working with the CCE Sullivan Board of Directors to activate and expand the work of both the Fund Development and Strategic Planning Committees. Community participation is at the heart of making sure Extension programs meet local needs. If either of these areas interest you, and you would like to volunteer as a committee person to help us navigate fundraising or the development of the next 5 year strategic plan for 2021-2025, please call 845-292-6180 or email me at cm638@cornell.edu and I will add you to the email list when we begin to schedule meetings.

In closing, I’d like to extend an initial invitation to our membership to CCE Sullivan’s 104th Annual Meeting, to be held Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at 6:30 pm, hosted by New Hope Community in Loch Sheldrake. TIPS WHEN CONSIDERING CREDIT Submitted by Nat Tompkins, Ag Business Coordinator Depending on your personal risk tolerance, the stage of your business, and the economic climate surrounding your industry, the words “credit”, “loan”, and “debt” may evoke a reaction from you. All farm businesses and their operators are completely different entities and individuals, each one having had their own experiences. That being said, whether you are a beginner or seasoned farm business, a baby boomer or millennial, the following four tips can help when considering credit.

1. Have your business plan ready.

A business plan is a key requirement for any business no matter the industry. Truth be told, a business plan is what separates a legitimate business, poised to grow and succeed, from one that’s not ready for that next step. A business plan is essential well before you even consider a loan. A proper business plan should tell you what and how much to produce, a method of production, how much it will cost, and what your profit can be. A business plan is a comprehensive, and changeable, guide for you to follow in order for your business to be a success. Most lenders you meet with will want some form of a business plan outlining specifically what the money will be used for, why you need it, and how you plan on paying it back.

2. Have enough cash saved up.

Having enough cash saved up is important for your business to remain solvent. Your business needs enough money saved for the down payment on the loan, but that shouldn’t be your only money saved. Constant

and consistent savings will help the business remain sustainable and provide cash flow during times of low commodity prices or lower sales volume. Being prepared for these inevitabilities makes you a better business owner, and can show the lender that you are serious about repaying.

In the event that you struggle with payments, banks can typically work with you. Loan officers want to see consistent savings before lending money. Creditors like to look at current cash levels, and a business’s capacity, so having enough cash on hand can make future loans cheaper, easier to obtain, and potentially unnecessary.

multiply that number by 100. What you get is a percent that will tell you how much income is produced for every dollar invested in the assets of a business.

For example, a farmer named Ashley takes out a loan of $5,000 at 5% interest for a high tunnel, and then sells $50,000 worth of peppers that year. For that specific asset, the ROA ($50,000/$5,000) would equal 1,000%.

For every dollar spent on the tractor, Ashley captured $10.00 in income.

Ashley’s interest rate for the loan was 5%, or for every dollar she borrowed it cost Ashley $00.05 to borrow that money. Meaning that she obtained $10.00 in income, for every $00.05 she spent on debt.

3. Shop around for your lender.

Getting a loan for a business is a big undertaking; going with a lender that will give you the cheapest interest rate may not be the best option. Look for a lender that is easy to work with, and one that you can work with for years to come. Other considerations for a lender include how much collateral they are looking to take.

Certain lenders may require more security for the loan they are going to write than others. In any case, make sure you shop around, and don’t just do business with one specific lender because you have “always done it with them”. You could be shorting yourself on chances to save money if you do.

4. Have your loan pay for itself.

A good sign that taking out a loan is the right move for you is if the asset you purchase can pay for itself. You can determine this by calculating your return on assets (ROA), and make sure that percent is greater than the interest rate on your loan.

PEST ALERT! SPOTTED LANTERNFLY Submitted by Bridget Kackos, Association Intern

of black and equally distinct bright white spots. The adult spotted lanternfly is a leafhopper with wings about 1” long. Adults have grey wings with black spots.

Lycorma delicatula, commonly known as the Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), is a new invasive insect that has spread throughout southeastern Pennsylvania and into New York State since its discovery in Berks County in 2014.

SLF presents a significant threat to Pennsylvania agriculture, including the grape, tree-fruit, hardwood, and nursery industries, which collectively are worth nearly $18 billion to the state’s economy.

Native to parts of Asia, spotted lanternfly was identified for the first time in the United States in Berks County in 2014. Since then, the pest has spread to a multicounty area in southeastern Pennsylvania, and sightings have been reported in some neighboring states.

As of September 2018, The New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Agriculture and Markets (DAM) confirmed that spotted lanternfly has been found in Albany and Yates counties in New York. A single adult insect was discovered in a vehicle in the Capital District. In addition, a single adult insect was reported on a private Keuka Lake property in Penn Yan, Yates County.

Potentially at stake are grape, tree-fruit, hardwood, nursery, and landscape industries, which generate agricultural crops and forest products worth nearly $18 billion annually.

The insect can also cause damage to high-value ornamentals in home landscapes. The spotted lanternfly attacks fruit trees, but not the fruit itself.

SLF feedings can stress plants, making them vulnerable to disease and attacks from other insects. It uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to

Adults lay eggs in masses in the late fall on trees, under bark, posts, lawn furniture, cars, trailers, outdoor grills, and on many other surfaces.

What can you do to help?

feed on the sap in trunks, branches, twigs, and leaves. These oozing wounds will leave a greyish or black trail along the bark of the plant. As it digests the sap, the insect excretes a substance known as honeydew that, along with sap from these weeping wounds, can attract bees and other insects, affecting quality of life for residents. There may be a buildup of this sticky fluid on infested plants and on the ground below. The honeydew and sap also provide a medium for growth of fungi, such as sooty mold, which can cover leaf surfaces and interfere with plant photosynthesis, negatively affecting the growth and fruit yield of plants. Plants with heavy infestations may not survive.

Make sure you are not moving any life stage of spotted lanternfly when traveling within or out of the quarantine zone.

Spotted lanternflies go through five stages of growth after hatching from eggs. The first four stages are called nymphs, which are incapable of flight.

The young nymphs are black with bright white spots and are roughly the size of a pencil eraser. The next stages of growth are similar, but the nymphs become larger.

PLANTING FALL BULBS FOR SPRING COLOR Submitted by Mary Winters, Temp Horticulture Assistant Bulb is a term loosely used to include corms, tubers, tuberous roots, and rhizomes as well as true bulbs. They are broadly grouped into springflowering (January-May) and summerflowering (June-September).

Many plants have a specialized root part for storing food. True bulbs are a leaf or flower bud encased in fleshy food storage layers called scales. But depending on the type of root, they might be called corms, rhizomes, tubers, or bulbs. The term “bulb” refers to any food-storing bulbous underground plant growth. Most of the ones that are hardy in this area should be planted in October or in time to get them into the ground while soil temperatures average 45-50 degrees.

Spring bulbs provide early color before most annuals and perennials bloom. Popular spring bulbs include crocus, tulips, daffodils, alliums, and hyacinths. Choose your bulbs on the basis of color and flower size for specific purposes. Small ones will create a natural look, and large ones stand out as specimen plants.

Summer-flowering bulbs include amaryllis, tuberous begonia, caladium, calla lily, dahlia, gladiolus, lily, and spider lily. These tender summerflowering bulbs are usually planted in the spring, after the danger of frost. Lilies are best planted in late fall. Your summerflowering bulbs will have to be dug and Page 6

properly stored in a frost-free location over the winter. Most garden centers should be well stocked. Some of the rarer bulbs might only be available by mail order.

good moisture holding qualities, the healthier the plant. If you are planting in a lawn, bulb planting tools are readily available at most garden and home improvement centers.

Plant bulbs in forests, fields, flower beds and containers, as long as they will get six to eight hours of sunlight.

They can be planted in your lawn and still “season” in time to get cut down with the first mowing in spring and not be seen again until the same time next year. (To season means that the leaves turn brown or yellow and the plant has produced and stored enough food for next year.) Early daffodils and crocuses are often planted in this way. Trees do not block sunlight from early bulbs if they season before the arrival of heavy foliage.

Use bulb size as depth gauge, and plant about three times as deep as the height of the bulb. For example, if a daffodil bulb is 3 inches, plant it 9 inches deep. For corms and true bulbs, place the pointed side up and the flatter side down. Water when planting, but be careful not to overwater. Bulbs do not like wet feet.

Most do fine without supplemental fertilizer, but they do need light soil. If you choose, bone meal or milorganite can be sprinkled in the area or in holes as per package instructions.

Bulbs look best when planted in drifts or waves of similar color in multiples of eight or more of each variety. Plant your bulbs now and enjoy for many springs to come.

START YOUR ENERGY UPGRADES WITH LIGHTS Submitted by Sean Welsh, Energy Resource Educator A simple thing to do for a more energy efficient home is to take a look at your lighting and begin to look at LED products as you replace bulbs.

With old style incandescent bulbs being phased out of the marketplace, an energy efficient replacement is the best choice. With the phase-out, consumers are being offered many new LED products and styles, plus a new way to purchase blubs.

With the phase-out of inefficient blubs like incandescent and halogen comes a recognition that these older style bulbs waste much of the energy they need to function as heat. A Compact Fluorescent Lamp or CFL uses 1/5 to 1/3 the amount of energy of an incandescent bulb.

It is true that the upfront cost of a CFL is a little more than the older style incandescent bulbs, but they save more than five times the purchase price over their expected life time.

CFL bulbs are able to work in many different fixtures.

LEDs use even less energy than CFLs, but the longer lifespan of up to 25 years really makes them a money saver! LEDs are priced a little higher than CFLs but the everyday energy savings and long life of the bulbs make them an excellent choice for long term energy savings. LEDS also come in a wide range of different products, including dimmable, decorative, and outdoor choices.

Lumens are the new way to select a light bulb vs the old way of looking for watts on the packaging. Lumens (LM) measure brightness of a bulb, or the amount of light a blub produces, unlike watts which measure power consumption. Here is a conversion chart to help you find the right bulbs; consumers are also able to look at Page 8

the packaging to help decide what choice is right for which fixtures.

Light output/ lumens- Measures the output of light, the higher the number, the more light is emitted.

Energy costs- Estimated annual energy costs of each bulb included in the package based on the average initial wattage, a usage rate of 3 hours per day, and 11 cents per kWh.

Giving thought to selecting light color by location in the home is helpful.

In addition to varying degrees of brightness (measured in lumens!), light bulbs also come in a range of light colors; not color in the sense of red, purple, or green but color temperature. Bulbs that give off a soft, yellowish glow are considered warm, while those that emit crisp, blue light are considered cool. Light color is measured in kelvin (k). The higher the kelvin, the cooler the light. Different rooms and tasks require different types of light. For example, living rooms, dens, bedrooms, and hallways call for a softer light (warm, yellowish glow) and that kelvin (k) range would be 2500-3,000(k).

Kitchen, bathroom, or work areas require more of a bright light (crisp, white light) and would be a little higher on the kelvin range 3500-4,100 (k).

Reading areas and detail oriented workspaces which would work best with a light most resembling daylight (cool, bluish light similar to natural sunlight) is going to be even higher on the kelvin range 5,000-6500(k) Read the lighting fact label on the package, which is required on the majority of light bulb packaging, providing a handy reference for making the most energy efficient choice. Here is a quick guide to how

Bulb life- The life of bulbs, based on 3 hours of use per day, expressed in years rounded to the nearest tenth.

Light appearance- Measures light color. “Cool” colors give off a crisp, blueish light and have a higher kelvin temperature. “Warm” colors give off a soft, yellowish color and have a lower kelvin temperature.

Energy used- The wattage for each bulb included in package, expressed as energy used in average initial wattage.

Lastly, look for the ENERGY STAR label. These bulbs have earned the label and met strict energy efficiency and quality requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). They are built to save energy and that saves you money!

20C LICENSE: FOOD PROCESSING AT HOME Submitted by Bridget Kackos, Association Intern The Federal government, individual states, cities, and municipalities govern the operation of food processing facilities whether home kitchens or commercial facilities.

Regulations differ from state to state and are determined by the type of food product being prepared and the processing methods used. All food facilities are required to register with FDA (based on the Bioterrorism Act of 2002) and to renew registration every other year.

Foods that are regulated and require a Processing License in NY – Article 20-C License from the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets This regulation applies to anything that is altered by baking, canning, preserving, freezing, dehydrating, juicing, cider making, pickling, brining, bottling, packaging, repackaging, pressing, waxing, heating or cooking, smoking, roasting, or manufacturing. Requirements vary depending on product. A scheduled process must be developed which outlines recipe testing/ formulation, critical control points (to avoid contamination and control hazards), processing steps, storage requirements, distribution and selling conditions/restrictions.

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) enacted in 2011, requires that most of the food manufacturers enhance food safety and quality by implementation of Food Safety Plans, which include Preventive Controls for all aspects of food processing, from incoming ingredients through processing itself to storage, distribution and sale of the final product. Specific requirements for continuous training programs are also

part of FSMA requirements, including that food safety personnel receive specific training on Preventive Controls.

Home Processing Exemption New York State allows non-hazardous foods such as candy, cakes not requiring refrigeration, cookies, brownies, two-crusted fruit pies, breads and rolls, standard fruit jams and jellies, dried spices and herbs, and snack items to be produced in home kitchens. A review of processing procedures may be required for certain products before exemption is granted.

Anyone seeking a Home Processing Exemption must: • Contact the NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets to obtain this certificate • Complete an annual water test for bacteria if using private water Note: Internet sales are not allowed under this exemption Some types of foods may not be produced in a home kitchen, as mandated by Federal regulations. These foods are considered potentially hazardous: • Low acid and acidified (pickled) foods packed in hermetically sealed containers must be registered with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) • Meat products with more than 3% raw or 2% cooked meat ingredients in a completed product are regulated by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) • Vacuum packaged, and any other reduced oxygen packaged products

Granting, Suspending or Revoking Licenses The commissioner may decline to grant a new license, may decline to renew a license, may suspend or revoke a license already granted after due notice and opportunity for hearing whenever he finds that: (1) Any statement contained in an

application for license is or was false or misleading; (2) The establishment does not have facilities or equipment sufficient to maintain adequate sanitation for the activities conducted; (3) The establishment is not maintained in a clean and sanitary condition or is not operated in a sanitary or proper manner; (4) The maintenance and operation of the establishment is such that the product produced therein is or may be adulterated; (5) The establishment has failed or refused to produce any records or provide any information demanded by the commissioner reasonably related to the administration and enforcement of this article; (6) The applicant or licensee, or an officer, director, partner, holder of ten per cent of the voting stock, or any other person exercising any position of management or control has failed to comply with any of the provisions of this chapter or rules and regulations promulgated pursuant thereto; or (7) Any person including the applicant or licensee, or an officer, director, partner or any stockholder, exercising any position of management or control has been convicted of a felony in any court of the United States or any state or territory.

In addition to the positive impacts that farm-to-school programs can have on children, there are several other stakeholders that can benefit from Farm-to-School initiatives.

Teachers who have reported buying school lunch more often and being more conscious of dietary behaviors.

Foodservice staff in some districts found farm-to-school programs as an opportunity to develop innovative seasonal recipes and new uses for local foods. Parents reported healthy changes in shopping, cooking and talking about healthy eating and farmers reported viewing farm-toschool programs as promotional opportunities for their business as well as a way to build cooperation between schools, farms and the

We have already enrolled new 4-H youth members through this community outreach and have received multiple inquiries. Volunteers can join us!

TAI CHI FOR FALL PREVENTION September 4, 6, 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27 The Caregiver Resource Center continued its Tai Chi for Fall Prevention program in the Towns of Neversink and Highland this month. This sold out program is a gentle, evidence-based way to reduce the risk of falls by more than 40%!

OUTREACH @ ENGN September 5, 12, 19, 26 Extension staff made their weekly Wednesday outreach visits out to Callicoon’s ENGN Center.

At least once a week, you can visit Extension staff working at the ENGN office remotely, so they’re more accessible to the western end of the county for questions and conversations. Look out for the “Cornell Coop. Extension On Site” feather flag and stop on in!

FURRY FIRST FRIDAYS September 7 The first Friday of every month is Furry Fridays at the Extension Education Center. To promote mental health and physical activity, some Extension staff bring their leashed pets in for fun and snuggles. Come say hi if you’re passing by!

POWERFUL TOOLS September 11, 18, 25 The Powerful Tools for Caregivers program is another evidence-based program offered by the Caregiver Resource Center. This free series provides self-care tips and tricks to folks caring for a home bound or mobility impaired loved one-- be it friend, family, or neighbor.

KITCHEN OPEN HOUSE September 12 The Catskills Kitchen hosted the second of two Open Houses. These events gave interested folks an opportunity to tour the kitchen and pick the coordinator’s brain about the ins and outs of starting a small scale food processing business.

LIVESTOCK AUCTION REVIEW September 13 The 4-H Animal Science Program hosted a Livestock Auction follow up and reflection activity for youth who raised and sold livestock at this year’s Sullivan County Youth Fair. Several thousand dollars were raised to support youths’ involvement with animal science, and towards the CCE Sullivan 4-H Animal Science Secondary Education Scholarships.

CHICKEN BBQ & AUCTION September 15 CCE Sullivan hosted its Cornell Country Chicken BBQ out at White Sulphur Springs Fireman’s Park. With support from our members, new folks we just met, and our gracious donors, we raised just about $5,000 for our capital projects. MONTICELLO SPRINKLER BEACH Written by Bee Moser,ESNY Hudson Valley Nutritionist A beach in the middle of Monticello, a parking lot filled with a plethora of sprinklers, music, free healthy food, and drinks? All of this became reality because Heather Jacksy of the Sullivan County Division of Planning, Community Development, and Real Property, had an idea and wanted to create an event with the sole purpose of injecting some FUN in the community.

And who doesn’t want their community to be heathier and happier?

With the help of Sullivan Renaissance, Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County, and Eat Smart New York Hudson Valley, “Sprinkler Beach” was born.

“It was incredibly fun for me to see a nugget of an idea get fostered and become an actual thing,” Heather said.

Volunteers, many of them children and teens from the Center for Workforce Development’s Summer Youth Program, came together and created a beach on the parking lot located between the Government Center and Broadway in Monticello.

People painted ocean waves, beach sand with sea stars, sand toys, and seashells. It was amazing how closely it resembled an actual beach!

Heather set up many sprinklers and got them going with the help of the Monticello Fire Department. Kids and adults alike came out on a hot and sunny day back in August to run through the sprinklers, while a DJ spun some music.

The sounds of laughter and happiness filled Monticello.

After the kids tired from running through sprinklers they enjoyed a healthy lunch. Yummy cucumber salad or fruit salad was offered as well as fruit infused water. Everyone enjoyed relaxing in beach chairs, or playing with water toys and hulahoops.

The community was also encouraged to write or draw ideas for the potential future use of the parking lot here information on making healthier choices was available. The fun was completed with Renny the Rooster showing off his dance moves and forming a conga line with the kids.

Everyone left with a smile on their face, fresh, organic produce donated from Willow Wisp Farm and Beaverdam Brook Farm, and of course a beach ball to remember this amazing and fun event!

Program Spotlight Farm Spotlight HOBBY HORSE FARM Hobby Horse Farm, LLC is owned and operated by Colleen McKeon Osterhout and located in Woodbourne, NY. This 54-acre horse farm is made up of wooded trails, an 80’ x 120’ outdoor arena, 2 round pens, and is home to 15 horses that are both owned and boarded on the property.

Hobby Horse Farm was started in 1930 by Colleen’s grandparents and was originally a dairy farm but became a horse farm in 1968 when her parents, Ruth and Kevin McKeon, built their home on the property.

The farm has now expanded to offer horse boarding, riding lessons, and training services.

Colleen has a strong passion for horses and enjoys sharing that passion with others.

FARM TO SCHOOL CCE Sullivan staff, in partnership with Sullivan Renaissance, have been busy getting our Sullivan County youth on to farms! This summer, youth from the Liberty Boys and Girls Summer Program, the Center for Workforce Development Summer Youth Employment Program, and the Evergreen Community Garden had the opportunity to learn about farming first-hand. Youth from the Evergreen Community Garden along with volunteers from Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development had the chance to visit Willow Wisp Organic Farm, Apple Pond Farm, and Stonewall Farms. While at these farm properties, they learned about the importance of agriculture to our local economy, where our vegetables come from, how to milk a goat, and even got to see a miniature horse! Thanks to the staff at SUNY Sullivan’s New Hope Farm, the summer youth were able to visit their farm and learn about high tunnels, raising chickens, and the hands-on programming that takes place at the campus.

Volunteer Spotlight BARRY LEWIS Barry Lewis, executive editor of the Times Herald Record and husband to CCE Dependent Care Educator Bonnie Lewis, has supported Extension consistently throughout the years.

Barry ensures that CCE information gets out in the paper and on recordonline.com, promoting upcoming programs and opportunities for the public.

But that’s not all- Barry has volunteered his time and talents to act as auctioneer for live auctions at several events including the Centennial Barn Dance, Sullivan County Youth Fair, and most recently, our Country BBQ & Live Auction in September.

Staff Spotlight WANDA V. CRUZ On June 6, 2018, Wanda V. Cruz was installed as the President Elect for the Middletown Lions Club. She will also take the responsibilities of District Chair for Diabetes Awareness as part of the 20-O District Cabinet for 20182019, which includes Lions Clubs from Sullivan, Orange, Ulster, and Dutchess Counties. As a member of the Middletown Lions Club, Wanda has been Advisor to the Middletown Leos Club; Director; Program Director; 3rd Vice President (VP); 2nd VP; 1st VP; and now President for 20182019. A former president provided her with a 1999-2000 Presidential Appreciation Award, which followed with a 2000-2001 New Lion of the Year Award. In 1998, she was awarded a Youth Worker Award from the County of Orange and in the year 2000 she received a Human Rights Commission Award. Around 2015, Wanda was appointed as an Orange County Human Rights Commissioner. On January 25, 2016, she joined CCE Sullivan as the Healthy Communities Coordinator for the NYS Department of Health Creating Healthy Schools & Communities program. Since then, she has been awarded with a Certificate of Special Recognition from the Sullivan County Legislature for assisting the members of the Town of Mamakating Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, and with a NYS Assembly Certificate of Merit, presented by Catskill Regional Medical Center, for unwavering commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of Sullivan County Residents. Congratulations, Wanda!

4-H ANIMAL HUSBANDRY: POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Submitted by Barbara Moran, 4-H Livestock Educator With the 2018 Sullivan County Youth Fair recently come to a close, it allows for a time of reflection on accomplishments achieved, challenges overcome, and learning opportunities our county’s youth have experienced over the last year.

As one of the Extension coordinators responsible for the 4-H livestock project areas, I was constantly talking with 4-H’ers, parents, and the general public at the fair. A highlight during these interactions was watching 4-H’ers discuss their projects with the public. Frequent topics included the project’s name and temperament, production challenges, and how much they enjoyed raising their animals. Livestock projects have numerous benefits to 4-H’ers. Of these, I would like to reflect on a few highlighted over the course of our county fair.

Responsibility – Daily feeding and grooming of an animal develops skills to care for others. Our county youth were constantly checking on animals, providing water, and grooming. All 4-H projects require the perseverance to follow through with a project to completion.

Probably one of the most longterm endeavors is the beef project, requiring an animal be raised for 1416 months to market weight. Through each 4-H’ers diligent efforts, the Livestock Auction sale price was the reward for a job well done.

Planning – 4-H’ers are required to plan for each 4-H year’s project entries. At the start of the 4-H year (Oct. 1), members start considering what projects they would like to explore for the year, and then submit a participation form by June 1. Thereafter, the project Page 26

entry forms and deadlines are a constant reminder of real life expectations. The ability to take care of personal organization is a life skill 4-H promotes. There have been numerous research studies on the emphasis employers place on people accepting responsibility for planning and meeting deadlines. 4-H assists with this life skill to meet deadlines and accept personal responsibility.

Family Involvement - Livestock projects should be a family affair.

Ideally, 4-H livestock projects should be balanced family time that places an emphasis on youth development rather than winning. Yes, the support of adults is needed financially, as transportation, and is positive mentorship. Many of our Sullivan County families chose to spend a day at a livestock show and support each other. This community of project support truly demonstrates learning by doing.

Coping Mechanisms – Daily challenges require daily solutions.

It was a pleasure to discuss with 4-H’ers their challenges involved with a project and the decisions made to remedy them. One example was the question of which animal to bring to the fair. Being fortunate to have multiple animals weighed in at the spring show, this 4-H’er had the tough decision of which two animals to bring (out of five) to the county fair for showing. After about ten minutes of discussion I realized the decision making process of this twelve year old was supported (not dictated) by 4-H parents. The animals that came to the fair were selected based on how the animal handled (led/cooperated) and favorites; not necessarily the best animal to win at the show. The parents stated that they decided to put more emphasis on a positive experience for the first year and less on winning.

Sportsmanship – There is only one Grand Champion in a given project area. It was a breath of fresh air to see some of our 4-H’ers shake the hands of the judge and fellow competitors in a given class at the end of the judging. True sportsmanship is the ability to support fellow participants regardless of class placing. Most participants have experienced the emotions of exceptional efforts and extreme disappointment through the course of a livestock project.

More than one of our fair judges made comments to me about the graciousness of our 4-H’ers in helping others.

As a program coordinator of Cornell Cooperative Extension, I enjoy working with Sullivan County 4-H families to learn problem-solving skills that can make a positive impact upon their home, community, country, and world.

SAVE $30K: AVOID FALLS THIS FALL Submitted by Bonnie Lewis, RN Dependent Care Educator Did you know that if you have fallen once, you have doubled your chances of falling again? More than one out of four older people falls each year, but less than half tell their doctor. Falls are not an inevitable part of aging and risk can be reduced with active interventions. Autumn is just too beautiful to be spent recuperating from a fall and falls are just too expensive (adding insult to the actual injury)!

In 2015, total medical costs for falls totaled more than $50 billion.1 Because the U.S. population is aging, both the number of falls and the costs to treat fall injuries are likely to rise.

• Each year, millions of people 65 and older are treated in emergency departments because of falls.2 • Fall injuries are among the 20 most expensive medical conditions.3 • The average hospital cost for a fall injury is over $30,000.4 • The costs of treating fall injuries goes up with age.4

Cost calculations include direct medical care fees from hospital and nursing homes, doctors and other professional services, rehabilitation, community-based services, use of medical equipment, prescription drugs, and insurance processing. But the direct costs do not account for the longterm effects of these injuries such as disability, dependence on others, lost time from work and household duties, and reduced quality of life.

There are specific things that seniors and caregivers can do to reduce the chances of falling with assistance from their health care providers.

1. Review your medicines. a. As you get older, the way medicines work in your body can change. Some medicines, or combinations of medicines, can make you sleepy or dizzy and can cause you to fall. Ask your provider about taking

vitamin D supplements to improve bone, muscle, and nerve health.

2. Exercise to improve your balance and strength. a. Exercises that improve balance and make your legs stronger, lower your chances of falling. It also helps you feel better and more confident. An example of this kind of exercise is Tai Chi. b. Lack of exercise leads to weakness and increases your chances of falling 3. Have your eyes and feet checked. a. Poor vision can increase your chances of falling. Once a year have your vision screened. b. Visit your primary physician or podiatrist also at least once a year to examine your feet. Discuss proper footwear and ask for a balance evaluation.

4. Make your home safer. a. Remove things you can trip over (like papers, books, clothes, and shoes) from stairs and places where you walk. b. Remove small throw rugs or use doublesided tape to keep the rugs from slipping. c. Keep items you use often in cabinets you can reach easily without using a step stool. d. Have grab bars put in next to and inside the tub, and next to the toilet. e. Use non-slip mats in the bathtub and on shower floors. f. Improve the lighting in your home. As you

get older, you need brighter lights to see well. Hang light-weight curtains or shades to reduce glare. g. Have handrails and lights installed on all staircases. h. Wear well-fitting shoes with good support inside and outside the house.

Many falls can be prevented. By making some changes, you can lower your chances of falling.
