4-H’RS LEAD TAKE & MAKE STATIONS AT FAIR Youth leadership was on display at Fair this year by 4-H’ers sharing project activities. Centrally located in the Youth Building of the fairgrounds, the demonstration area was a hive of activity for 4-H’ers and fairgoers alike. 4-H is thankful for the many youth assisting a full schedule of Take and Makes each day of Fair and particularly wishes to spotlight the activities proposed, planned, supplied and led by youth and their adult mentors. Appreciation goes out to Maylee P. and her “How to Make Slime” demonstration as well as Small Town Country 4-H Club’s “Felted Soaps” activity, in modeling the motto “Learning By Doing” each day of fair and providing free Take Home Kits to young fairgoers. LINDA KAYS Farmer, Volunteer, and 4-H Club leader Kays Farm, a dairy farm in Callicoon, was founded by Linda and Robert in 1968. Over the years, the Kays have adapted and grown the farm, and their family. Their sons, Jeff and Gregg Kays operate the farm today and granddaughter Danielle Sykes, is the herdswoman, with some help from sisters Beth and Kerry. Linda started a 4-H Dairy Club for youth in the Jeffersonville, Youngsville and Delaware Valley area in 1975. The club was named the 4-H MooJuicers. Linda shared “4-H was the best youth program I could get my kids involved in. It’s so family oriented, everyone can have a role, including many generations within the same club.” “The Fair is the culmination of the hard work from members the hard work from members all year. For many members, the opportunity to show their stewardship of their animal, builds a great sense of pride. There are ups and downs to this work, and all it takes to get to the stage, sometimes losing an animal completely. Learning this type of empathy and responsibility is important throughout life.” 4-H is certainly a family affair for the Kays. Linda and Robert’s daughter Amy Sykes is a 4-H club leader, and several of their grandchildren are 4-H club members. Linda has spent almost 50 years the 4-H Moo-Juicers club leader, and she considers all the alumni of the of the club to be family.
