Colleen Monaghan, Executive Director cm638@cornell.edu Greetings, folks. ‘Tis the season of thanksgiving. A time for renewing memberships, sending year-end donations, reserving seats for the Afternoon Gala, and contributing hours of volunteer time to our programs; CCESC has a lot to be grateful for! Last month I mentioned we would be hosting an open house and pot luck to celebrate the progress we have seen together, reflect on our challenges, and enjoy each other’s company. The invitation stands, and we’ve pushed the date to January 2016. We heard from many that with all the fall classes, volunteer and personal commitments, and holidays, enjoying an evening at Extension after the new year would be a welcome change of pace. There will be more information in next month’s newsletter. We hope to see you there!

This week is your last chance to RSVP for the annual Afternoon Gala on November 8 at Bernie’s Holiday Restaurant in Rock Hill. The day will feature live music by Albi Beluli, local fare from several Sullivan County producers, a handmade lap quilt drawing, and the BEST LIVE AUCTION around, featuring Eddie Moran, Jr. If Eddie can sell a pie for $400, we’re sure to be in for a treat when he auctions off packages filled with goods and services from right here in Sullivan County! Please join us to kick off the 2015 holiday season.

leverage additional state, federal, and private dollars. The County allocation and support of our legislators is at the heart of CCESC’s ability to come back strong after the recession. For their ongoing support, we are truly grateful.

In order to grow the agriculture and 4-H Youth Development programs we need to look beyond local government, remain assertive in our grant seeking, and call out to our membership, local businesses and schools, as well as the Sullivan County community. We currently have over 80 4-H volunteers supporting more than 20 clubs, with almost 200 members, plus several dozen independent youth. The only way to grow the 4-H club model is to have more adult volunteers commit to leading a group of young people through experiential learning opportunities in civic engagement, leadership, health & wellness, STEM topics, textiles, arts and crafts, animal sciences, photography, writing, or almost any other interest area. The model is flexible and there is training and staff support available to get started.

4-H afterschool is a different youth development model with flexibility.

Staff can train existing afterschool staff to deliver 4-H and Cornell University approved, research-based curricula materials. With appropriate funding, CCESC could provide a regu-

lar afterschool program, or a volunteer could start a club that meets at a school site right after school on a regular basis.

With regard to agricultural programming, you know we have a small but mighty team of two with a strong understanding of animal science, herd health and management, building business and production capacity, and creating linkages to resources and information. The County provides funding, partnership, committee support, and contact leads. It is up to the CCE family to find ways to leverage those resources to grow our staff and educational offerings, particularly in the areas of commercial horticulture, forestry and natural resources, and agricultural economics. If you have a lead on how to build support for any of the above ag and 4-H priorities, please get in touch with us. We love hearing from you!

As always, we face successes and challenges in the day-to-day business of using educational and experiential learning opportunities for community development purposes. Thankfully, we are part of an Association and community who consistently come together to support and build each other up for a better Sullivan County and a better quality of life. I look forward to seeing you at the gala!

2015 has been a good year for Extension and we will see growth in 2016.

As a result of receiving several grants focused on increasing health and wellness in Sullivan County, we’ll be adding almost 6 FTEs to our staff roster.

While this is good news, CCESC is still searching for ways to sustain and grow our core educational programs in agriculture and 4-H Youth Development. We count on the generous allocation from the Sullivan County Legislature to support core staff and to November, 2015

Submitted by Michelle Lipari, Agriculture & 4-H Community Educator OK- you bought the farm and you have moved onto the property, with excitement and anticipation of new activities in your farming ventures. There are a tremendous number of activities that need to be done on a small farm, regardless of the size. For the new or beginning farmer, one inevitable hurdle to overcome is how you will power your farm activities. You can farm with a number of power sources, including walk-behind, small-scale two wheel type machines, with tractors, or you can custom hire work that needs to be done. If you decide that having a tractor fits into your operation, read on.

This article will be the first in a series of how to select, acquire, operate, and maintain smaller scale farm machinery.

Often people ask me, “What tractor should I buy?”, and “How much does a tractor cost?” As with all things agricultural, the answer depends on a few things. One of the first things that I ask a new farmer is, “What do you want and need to do with a tractor, and how much can you afford to spend?” Each activity mentioned in this article will require certain machines in addition to a tractor and will be addressed in later articles.

The following is a list of activities which might be occurring on a farm or homestead at any given time of the year

Herdowner

Brushhogging meadows and pastures for grazing management and to prevent the fields from growing back into forest. This is one of the most critical jobs on a small farm, as nature can be relentless in working to restore forests. If fields are let to grow for more than about three years, small trees and brush will begin to take over, and then can be extremely difficult and expensive to correct.

Haymaking, which might be either small square bales, or large round bales of dry hay or baleage. The process can require mowing, tedding, raking, baling, wrapping high moisture bales, and hauling and unloading hay.

Tillage activities, such as plowing, disking, harrowing, planting, and—of course—picking stones.

Planting crops such as forages, row crops such as corn and cereal grains, fruits and vegetables, and possibly food plots for wildlife.

Pulling a variety of two and four wheel wagons around on the farm for diverse activities, such as hauling crops and hay, firewood, and giving hayrides to people.

Front end loader work for snow removal, manure handling, feeding animals, moving materials around the farm, and loading and hauling hay and other crops.

Working in the woods skidding logs, hauling firewood, and hauling maple sap to the sugar house.

So just what should we be looking for in a good used tractor? There are myriad features that we need to consider. To accomplish what we need to do, will our tractor have the features that we need?

Live hydraulics and power takeoff (PTO) are important; older tractors made in the forties and fifties frequently did not have “live” features, which meant if you pushed in the tractor’s clutch, the PTO or hydraulics stopped working. This can be quite annoying when you are in thick crops and have to use the clutch, then have to start up again from a dead stop.

Submitted by Melinda Meddaugh, Ag & Natural Resources Resource Educator No-till protects the soil from excessive erosion, reduces soil aeration from tillage, allows organic matter to accumulate, and improves the overall health of the soil. Switching can also help you reduce input costs and, thus, boost your bottom line profits. It is part of an integrated effort to conserve the nation’s natural resources.

What are some benefits from using no-tillage?

No-tillage cropping systems are known to provide many benefits to soils that can enhance production of crops. Many of the improvements to soils that result from no-tillage production such as increases in soil aggregation, waterholding capacity, nutrient cycling, and biological activity are related to increases in soil organic matter. Notillage systems are known to increase soil organic matter because of the absence of destructive tillage operations, the minimization of soil erosion losses, and the return of crop residue to the soil. Organic matter levels in no-tillage systems can be further improved with the use of cover crops, perennial crops, and organic amendments.

What are the soil quality gains from using no-tillage?

Soil quality gains from no-tillage systems are in the form of physical, chemical, and biological improvements to the soil. Physical benefits include better soil aggregate size and strength which means better soil structure, better infiltration, better permeability, lower bulk density, better water holding capacity, decreases in erosion, and improved water quality. Chemical benefits include higher cation exchange capacity (the sum total of exchangeable cations that a soil can absorb), which results in higher soil nutrient holding capacity and greater potential mineralizable nitrogen, resulting in an increased soil nitrogen bank. Biological November, 2015

benefits include increased carbon which serves as a food source for soil microbiology. Soil microorganisms are responsible for the decay of organic matter and cycling of both macro-and micro-nutrients back into forms that plants can use. Increasing the biological activity in the soil is the key to maintaining or increasing soil productivity. Increases in soil, physical, biological, and chemical properties enhance soil function while improving water quality, plant, and animal habitation.

Why should I switch to no-tillage?

Crops grown under no-tillage systems use water more efficiently, more rainfall or irrigation water is captured in the soil, the water-holding capacity of the soil increases, and water losses from runoff and evaporation are reduced. All factors combined, translate into higher yields and more profits. No -tillage cropping systems result in less time, labor, fuel, and machinery cost per acre resulting in better whole farm profitability and sustainability. Crops grown under no-tillage systems often have less in-crop weed emergence and allow safer use of herbicide for weed control. No-tillage system crop yields are very similar to tillage system yields. This means bottom line profits are higher in no-tillage systems.

SC SWCD Purchases No-Till Seeder Recently, the Sullivan County Soil and Water Conservation District received funding to purchase a Truax No-Till Seeder Model #OTG-7512 (11’wide, with a 8’ planting width and 7 1/2” row spacing) with assistance through the County of Sullivan Plans and Progress Program. The new piece of equipment will be available for rental through SCSWCD. Stay tuned in 2016 for educational programming on no till seeding and cover crops, offered through CCE Sullivan and SCSWCD.

CCE Sullivan and the Sullivan County Agriculture Task Force, a subcommittee of the Agriculture and Farmland Protection Board, have been meeting on a regular basis to implement the Sullivan County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan (AFPP), adopted by the Legislature in December of last year. The AFPP is a ten year plan and has six priority initiatives.

Nothing feels better than coming home to the scent of a balanced, nutritious, and convenient dinner that has been simmering all day.

Bring on the rich flavors of fall with your slow cooker and enjoy its benefits. Slow cooking helps manage your energy expenses as it is more efficient than an oven or stove. A natural method of tenderizing, slow cooking can save you money because you are able to purchase less expensive cuts of meat. Many slow cooker meals are one step preparation and can free up time in your evening for other activities.

Think outside the box when it comes to what you prepare in your slow cooker. Although traditional soups, stews, and roasts can be delicious and convenient, consider other options as well. Try a healthy breakfast by preparing oatmeal or applesauce overnight in your slow cooker. Consider your slow cooker for making your veggie dishes, such as sweet potatoes or beans.

Follow These 4 Food Safety Tips for Slow Cooker Success: 1. Always thaw meat & poultry in the refrigerator before cooking.

2. Slow cooker should be filled between halfway and 2/3 full. More or less can affect cook time and quality.

3. Refrigerate food within two hours after cooking using smaller containers.

4. Do not reheat leftovers in the crock pot. Use your microwave, stove, or oven instead.

Submitted by Bonnie Lewis, RN, Dependent Care Educator Family caregivers should not only be acknowledged as a part of the health care team for their loved one with a disability or a chronic condition – but also as the most important part of the health care team.

Why? Because family caregivers are the only people who are consistently present with their loved ones across all care settings.

Everyone else can and does change. Patients often have more than one doctor. Nurses change shifts in hospitals. Prescriptions may be filled at different pharmacies.

Family caregivers who are there as full partners with their loved ones ARE THERE through it all.

Family caregivers are spending an average of 20 hours per week providing care to their loved ones – far more hours than any medical professional spends with them. And many, in fact, are caring for their loved ones around the clock. That puts family caregivers in the best position to observe their loved ones, monitor their health, watch for side effects of medications, and respond to medical emergencies.

So, yes, family caregivers are often the most important member of the health care team because: 



Family caregivers have an intimate knowledge of the patient



Family caregivers have the desire to make sure their loved one is as healthy and has as high a quality of life as possible, and



Family caregivers see the patient in their own homes and for longer periods of time than anyone in the provider community.

Family caregivers and their loved ones are the only people present across all care settings

While one sign does not necessarily indicate abuse, there are several red flags that could indicate a problem. 

Bruises, pressure marks, broken bones, abrasions, and burns may be an indication of physical abuse, neglect, or mistreatment.



Unexplained withdrawal from normal activities, a sudden change in alertness, and unusual depression may be indicators of emotional abuse.



Bruises around the breasts or genital area can occur from sexual abuse.



Sudden changes in financial situations may be the result of exploitation.



Bedsores, unattended medical needs, poor hygiene, and unusual weight loss are indicators of possible neglect.



Behavior such as belittling, threats, and other uses of power and control by spouses are indicators of verbal or emotional abuse.



Strained or tense relationships as well as frequent arguments between the caregiver and elderly person are also signs.

It’s important to remain alert. Suffering often occurs in silence. If you notice changes in personality, behavior, or physical condition, you should start to question what is going on. Discharge Planning Checklist

Textile Group Workshop

Twenty-three members of the Monticello Senior Club actively engaged in this presentation on how to prepare for discharge from a long-term care facility or hospital, understanding that the goal is to successfully/safely/happily be home (or in new long term care facility). Many were unaware of decreasing Medicare/Medicaid payments to hospitals upon readmission, and greater emphasis was made on patient/ caregiver education and preparation.

Fifteen adults and youth attended this meeting which discussed instruction and project support for beginning knitting. The public is invited to participate in the textile group’s annual community service initiative collecting handmade hats, scarves, and mittens for people in need. The group meets on the third Friday of each month from 6:00-8:00 pm at the CCESC building in Liberty.

Guiding Senior Healthcare Transitions

4-H Window Display Contest for National 4-H Week October 4 - 10 Three volunteers toured Sullivan County to judge window displays put together by 4-H clubs for National 4-H Week. The winning display will be announced at 4-H Achievement Day held at the SUNY Sullivan Seelig theater on November 1, 2015 at 1:00 pm. ………………………………………….

Fall Gardening Seminar October 7 Twenty-five participants gathered together to learn about planting fall bulbs for spring and summer color. Topics for discussion included: depth for planting bulbs, arranging to achieve a show of spring colors, types of bulbs that are deer resistant, pruning, and how to put your garden to bed for the winter. Look for the hard work of all participants in the spring!

October 19 The Older Adult Transitional Support (OATS) collaboration kicked off the first class, of three, at Action Towards Independence to a mixed audience of seniors, caregivers, and professionals. Dr. Karin Pantel, EdD, RN, CNE, Bonnie Lewis, RN of CCE, and Vanessa Lescano, RN of Achieve Nursing Facility provided patient education to enhance communication and healthcare self-efficacy skills. The goal is to increase patient/caregiver discharge planning preparations and

eliminate hospital readmissions. A research-informed workbook was given to each of the eight participants. ………………………………………….

Senior Safety Day October 21 The fifth annual Senior Safety Day, hosted by the Caregiver Resource Center and the Office for the Aging, focused on October’s national recognition on domestic violence awareness.

Liliam Stettner, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Christine Fiorile Harrington, Attorney of the Legal Services of Hudson Valley provided engaging presentations on domestic violence and elder abuse, and the specific types of elder financial abuse. Detective Hess from the Liberty Police Department concluded the safety theme with a talk on scams occurring on the local level and helpfully reminded the guests how to avoid becoming victims. The Ted Stroebele Recreation Center was packed with ninety-four confirmed guests: 37 representatives for 28 health and service agencies assisting 57 seniors. ………………………………………….

(Continued from page 4) Now that we have considered the preceding information, I will describe my version of an ideal tractor. If you could only have one tractor, this is the type that I would recommend for your first tractor on a smaller farm.

1. A tractor made in the latter part of the twentieth century, at least 1970 onward. Older tractors made after World War II still abound, but lack many of the needed operational and safety features expected today. Narrow front ends from that era were very dangerous and lacked many of the safety features that we expect nowadays. These types of tractors can be very dangerous!

2. It has a diesel engine; not many farm tractors come with gasoline engines anymore. Older tractors from the sixties and early seventies with gasoline

engines can be quite aggravating to keep running smoothly on a year-round basis, especially the ones made before the era of electronic ignition.

3. It is mandatory to have a three point hitch. So much farm equipment exists which requires this feature, making it an absolute requirement. Often you can purchase aftermarket three point hitch assemblies for older tractors but they tend to be expensive, awkward to use, and inefficient.

4. Two sets of live hydraulic outlets (this is required to run many farm machines today). If your tractor has only one set of hydraulic hoses, a second set can be added if and when your machinery needs dictate.

5. A front end loader (often the front end loader ties up one set of hydraulic outlets leaving you only one other set to operate equipment).

6. Not too many hours on the hour meter, preferably fewer than 5,000 hours. Repairs and overhauls can be extremely expensive!

7. If not a fully enclosed cab, at least a Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS) should be mandatory, with a seat belt. A canopy is a nice addition on top of the ROPS. The ROPS is for roll over protection and can save lives, and the can-

opy can prevent you from baking in the sun during those hot summer days and will keep some rain off of you.

8. Four wheel drive is nice to have; our long, snowy winters and muddy, rainy summer months (especially if the tractor has a front end loader) allow you to access a lot of places you normally could not, and you can easily get stuck. There are two basic types of tractor operators, those who have been stuck, and those who are going to get stuck. Getting stuck and having to ask the neighbors to come pull you out frequently can strain neighborly relations.

9. Live power take off. Some older, obsolete tractors have “non-live� PTO which makes controlling the actions of your equipment awkward and difficult.

10. How much horse power? There are different ways to describe HP but for right now we can simply say that a tractor with between 45 and 75 horsepower should fit our needs.

11. How much will this tractor cost?

Depending on the age, condition, and features present, you can expect to pay at least $5,000 up to $20,000 for a good, used tractor such as I have described in this article. In general, the more features, the more costly the machine will be.

Submitted by Marylin Jones, 4-H Community Educator A group of 4-H’ers and CCESC enrollees first came together four years ago to explore an intergenerational project in making rag rugs. The effort was so popular and successful that an annual intergenerational community service project was launched, making hats, scarves, and mittens for people in need in Sullivan County. Members represent all ages and skill levels and still continues today as an opportunity to learn techniques and gain textile knowledge.

Members are encouraged to complete at least one project for community service in addition to working on their own personal projects. While the group enjoys ongoing crochet support by founding member Beverly Hesse, the textile group is evolving yet again to provide support and learning opportunities in other textile mediums.

A goal for 2015-2016 is to offer a variety of textile topics and instruction throughout the year, in addition to the ongoing project work. Beginning knitting instruction becomes available this November. “Fabrications”, workshops in weave structures for youth will be offered in 2016, as well as “How-to-Do Hours” in sewing, open to all ages.

This fall, Bev Hesse kicked off the year’s community service initiative with new mitten patterns. As in years past, 4-H seeks donations of yarn to support this project. Preferred is washable worsted weight yarn, but any type of clean, untangled skeins will be accepted.

New members from the community are always welcome to join the Intergenerational Textile Group. Participating youth age 5-19 will be enrolled as 4-H members for free. Adults 20 years and above who are not already CCESC enrollees will be encouraged to sign up for the $25/year membership to avail themselves of all the benefits of Cornell University Cooperative Extension Sullivan County in addition to enjoying the monthly meeting space and project support.

The CCESC/4-H Textile Group meets the third Friday of each month from 6:00- 8:00 pm at Cornell Cooperative Extension’s building on 64 Ferndale-Loomis Road in Liberty.

Friend of Extension Spotlight - Sullivan County Visitor’s Association The SCVA has been a tireless force promoting tourism, agriculture, and assisting small businesses and non-profits like Cornell Cooperative Extension with their marketing efforts in and beyond Sullivan County. Dynamic duo, Roberta Byron-Lockwood and Herb Clark, team up to spread the positive word of all that Sullivan County has to offer and that is not limited to CCESC programs and services. They have partnered with us on several projects including Trailkeeper.org and various agricultural information brochures, they were sponsors for projects like our Centennial and Capital campaigns, and they have always been willing to share special CCE opportunities with the public like our Afternoon Gala on November 8. SCVA is not only being highlighted for their tremendous support as friends of CCE by helping us to market workshops and campaigns, but especially for the important work they do in our community.

4-H Member Spotlight - Brandi B.

Volunteer Spotlight - Joan Howard Joan Howard has served as a CCE volunteer in many capacities over the past 15 years. Joan began her volunteer service on the Family and Consumer Science Program Committee before serving on the board of directors, and eventually being elected president of the board.

Joan served on the Personnel and Finance Committee, the Executive Committee, and several hiring committees.

Joan headed up our Centennial Campaign which celebrated 100 years of CCE in Sullivan County in 2014, creating a display for the Grahamsville museum as part of the Heritage Committee, fundraising for capital improvements, and assisting with our Annual Meeting and Barn Dance, among other important contributions. Joan was also our star seller of Centennial Quilt drawing tickets.

Currently, Joan is assisting with the live auction to be held at our second annual Afternoon Gala on November 8 (see page 11). You might have seen Joan out in the community looking for auction donations!

Joan worked for Orange County Community College, NYS Human Investment, and in various capacities for the County of Sullivan. She also taught at SUNY Sullivan and the City College of NY Planning Program.

CCESC would like to thank Joan for her dedication and unwavering volunteer service.

Just entering her 13th year with the Sullivan County 4-H Program, longtime member Brandi continues to keep herself open to new learning opportunities and experiences.

Since joining 4-H as a 5 year old Cloverbud, she has explored a wide range of project interests. Dairy, through her involvement with the 4-H Moo Juicers Club, has been one of her longest ongoing projects, and also one of her strongest, as she currently serves as spokesperson for the Sullivan County Dairy Promotion Committee, wearing the crown as Sullivan County Dairy Princess.

Brandi’s positive spirit and “can-do” attitude has helped her enjoy successes in other project areas as well. As member of the Working Together Rabbit Club, she has gained much knowledge and experience showing rabbits across the country. Her work in public presentations, community service and Teen Leader activities has also made her strong in teamwork and civic engagement, whether in sharing ideas with the 4-H Teen Group to prepare for a competition, representing Sullivan County in a talent show of NYS Fair Teen Leaders, or in offering a her youth voice as a teen representative on the 4-H Strategy Committee.

Brandi’s support to many a 4-H event, as a participant or as a Teen Leader has helped to keep the Sullivan County 4 -H Program strong. We look forward to continue working with this 4-H’er in the new program year!

Staff Spotlight Tara VanHorn Tara was hired in October 2012 as the Cornell Cooperative Extension Finance Manager. Tara is responsible for supervising all Association financial operations. She assists the executive director and the board of directors in financial analysis, management, and decision making and works with the executive director to develop Association and grant budget proposals. Tara has a BA in accounting.

Tara is a volunteer at the Port Jervis Volunteer Ambulance Corps (PJVAC) and Matamoras Fire Department. She is an officer at PJVAC and on their board of directors. She is a certified NY and PA EMT. She continually participates in numerous safety and rescue trainings and drills as well as taking continuing education classes to maintain her certification in both states and improve her skills.

Tara is originally from Port Jervis, NY and currently lives with her family in Dingmans Township, Milford, PA with her wife Rebecca and their newest addition, daughter Amelia.

The Sullivan County Democrat has chosen Tara as one of their Business & Professional Women of 2015. Stay tuned for that special section of the newspaper in mid-November.

Farm Spotlight - Thunder View Farms Thunder View Farms, located in the NYC Watershed in Grahamsville, NY, is a progressive beef farm in terms of genetics and management.

This farm has 225 head of registered black angus cattle on 1,400 acres.

Founded in 1958 by Philip and Richard Coombe, the Coombe family now has its 5th generation working on the farm. Ric, Karen, and their children Patrick and Rebecca have begun showing and marketing the cows.

Their recent accomplishment in the show ring is winning the Reserve Supreme Champion Cow/Calf pair at the 2014 NY State Fair. They have multiple first place winners at state and national shows in 2015. In addition to their cows, the Coombe family has a great herd of show quality rabbits.
