Dear Friends of Extension: Spring has definitely sprung at the Extension Education Center. Our health and community development program leader Malinda Ware and communications manager Nicole Slevin led the staff in our annual litter pluck and the grounds and facilities manager John Wilcox has begun partnering with community horticulture coordinator Dayna Gaeta and the Master Gardener Volunteers to get the grounds in shape for another growing and learning season. The eight teaching gardens, the nature trail, and even the parking lot itself provide an interactive experiential learning center where we host workshops, events, and are open to the public for selfled exploration.

Now that the weather has broken a bit more consistently, the Sullivan BOCES career and technology students have been hard at work installing outdoor fitness equipment on our Turtle Spring Nature Trail. The trail is closed for this construction right now but we’re looking forward to hosting an open house this summer to demonstrate how organizations, businesses, and municipalities can install this type of equipment to encourage fun, safe, physical activity and wellness in Sullivan County.

On the 20th, we host the annual Master Gardener Volunteer Program Plant Sale, where more than 100 Sullivan County gardeners try to beat the clock to stock up on seedlings for this year’s gardens. Join us just before 10:00 am to get in on the action! There will also be raffle opportunities and tickets for the 9th Annual Sullivan County Garden Tour, to be held on June 17, will be on sale at the door.

As we approach the end of the school year, we’re making plans to wrap up the 4-H We Connect Global Citizenship program at Liberty Middle School. Educators and volunteers are mapping out some choices for the teens to continue their cultural leadership journey through the summer by creating and doing some related community service work in the Village. Once the group settles on some projects, we’ll share the news and how you can support their work in the June and July newsletters.

And as you know, it’s never too early to start thinking about the Sullivan County Youth Fair. New York State’s oldest youth fair, in partnership with the Neversink Agricultural Society’s Grahamsville Little World’s Fair, is on track to show the region hundreds of still exhibits and animal projects of the more than 200 4-H’ers in the Sullivan County 4-H program. As always, highlights on Sunday at the fair will be the annual Livestock and Pie Auctions. Please put August 20 on your calendars now and come on out to support and celebrate Sullivan County’s youth!

Lastly, if you’re in the neighborhood and are curious about how you can volunteer with Extension, stop in and have a look around. We’ve got classrooms to paint, trees to clear, gardens to plant, papers to shred, and always outreach and fundraising to do. We’d be happy to talk with you about how to support CCE Sullivan’s ongoing efforts to reach more folks with programs that matter to them.

INDUSTRIAL HEMP: AN UPDATE Written by Michelle Lipari, Agriculture Educator CCESC agriculture staff has received many inquiries on growing industrial hemp. There has been some confusion on the differences between the hemp and marijuana plant since the plants look similar. But these two plants are as different as a house cat and a lion. Both are cats, but they are not the same. A big indicator of their differences is the level of THC in the plant. Hemp plant has a level of less than 0.3%, and therefore provides no psychoactive effects.

New relaxed regulations from the governor’s office recently made it legal to grow industrial hemp in New York. The New York State Department of Ag and Markets has issued permits to grow industrial hemp via the Industrial Hemp Research Pilot program. To receive a permit to grow industrial hemp in the state of New York, you must be growing for research or academic purposes with an overall goal of improving the industry. If these requirements are met, there is no requirement to partner with an institution of higher education.

Ten locations in the state have started growing industrial hemp and researching the areas of production, soil health, variety selection, and equipment. SUNY Sullivan received a permit to begin studying how to grow industrial hemp right here in Sullivan County. Industrial hemp could be a successful cash crop for Sullivan County farmers in the future and Extension will keep up-to-date with the information that will be gleaned from these studies. For now, the absence of processing facilities, non-imported seeds, economics, undetermined marketing channels, and testing labs provides a host of Page 4

How you maintain your yard or garden can have an effect on the health of the soil, water, air, and plants. Whether you call it eco-friendly gardening, green gardening, or sustainable gardening, the premise is pretty much the same. Some common themes include: working with nature, rather than against it; when designing a garden, avoid being wasteful; recycle materials when possible; be water-wise; and minimize the use of insecticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. Below are some techniques that will help you protect and conserve our natural resources.

Control water runoff from your property. Reduce non-permeable hardscape wherever possible to minimize rainwater runoff and erosion. Skip the pavement. Consider gravel parking areas or paths made from mulch or gravel. Use porous paving materials that allow water to soak into the ground (like stone, wood, loose bricks, and paving blocks) for patios, decks, and pathways.

Conserve water by planting drought resistant, or native plants. Native plants tend to be better adapted to the local climate, weather patterns, and soils. Once established, many native plants can survive on rainfall alone and will not need supplemental watering. Add compost to the soil to help improve water absorption and retention to further reduce water requirements. For every one percent of organic matter, the soil can hold 16,000 gallons of plant available water per acre of soil down to one foot deep. Finally, apply a layer of mulch to reduce moisture evaporation and to help conserve water.

Add a rain barrel to your yard. Rain barrels are a valuable addition to any garden. Locate the barrels underneath a downspout to collect water from the roof each time it rains.

The saved water can be used to water plants in your yard. Rain barrels also help reduce the amount of water that runs off your property, which in turn reduces the amount of contaminants (e.g., fertilizers, pesticides, sediment, and grass clippings) that may find

Put some thought into your plant selections and garden design. Group plants according to water, sun, and soil requirements for efficient water use. A shade plant in too much sun will need more water than if it was sited appropriately. You can further group plants into high, moderate, and low water use zones. By keeping your thirsty plants together, you can limit the area where you have to water heavily. If you use an automated watering system, adjust it for seasonal changes. Consider using a rain or soil sensing shut-off switch. Weeds compete with your plants for water and nutrients so weed on a regular basis.

Rethink your pesticide use. Adopt Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques in your garden. IPM can reduce the amount of pesticides needed since you are monitoring for insects and diseases. Learn to tolerate minor insect damage in your yard and garden. Identify the problem before you spray. Work to increase the number of beneficial insects in your landscape. If you do use pesticides, apply and dispose of them properly.

Check the source of gardening materials and make sure you reuse, recycle, and renew. Reduce the

production of waste by avoiding products that require frequent replacement or regular maintenance.

Purchase durable products that will outlast those of lesser quality.

Minimize your use of powered tools.

Consider the environmental impacts and buy energy efficient tools. For a healthy and more ecological lawn, mow high and less often. Mowing your lawn to a 3-inch height helps grass outcompete weeds. Depending on growth rates, this can be every 5 to 15 days. Under all but the most severe conditions, it is better to avoid lawn watering. Never use pesticides to control lawn insects or weeds simply as a routine practice. The 2010 Nutrient Runoff Law prohibits application of lawn fertilizer from December 1 to April 1 in New York State and restricts application of lawn fertilizers that contain phosphorus.

Let the rain soak in. Plant dense strips of native trees, shrubs, and groundcovers next to streams, lakes, and ditches to stabilize the soil and to slow and filter run-off.

Start small, pick one or two things to do. By adopting some of these practices, gardeners and homeowners can help preserve our natural resources while preventing waste and pollution.

Whether a child chooses to pick up that piece of pizza or that salad in school has more reasoning behind it than we may think. There are a multitude of factors that influence children and adolescents’ food choices, and we know that the habits established early on tend to continue into adulthood.

It is obvious that over time, children and adolescents have been making poorer food choices at home and in schools. Parents generally have control over their kids’ behaviors and what they eat at home. They are the ones purchasing and preparing the foods. If a child does not have access to fruits or vegetables at home because their parents do not purchase them, then they are not going to have high consumption of produce at home.

Whether a family purchases fresh produce is influenced by factors of its own: location, income, etc. If they are in a low-income situation or live far away from grocery stores and just don’t have the transportation to get there, it can affect a family’s access to healthy foods in a big way.

BUILDING RESILIENCE FOR HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT Submitted by Marylin Jones, 4-H Program Coordinator Healthy youth development strategies, the process of providing youth with the support, relationship experiences, resources, and opportunities needed for growth into healthy, competent adults, have been shown by research to be promising approaches in preventing or reducing adolescent health-risk behaviors.

Moreover, there is strong consensus that the development of a competent, successful adult requires skills above and beyond being merely problemfree. In “Healthy Youth Development: Science and Strategies”, researchers Debra Bernat and Michael Resnick underscore the building of resilience to be as critical a factor in youth development as the prevention of negative outcomes.

Resilience is the capacity to rebuild and grow from adversity and it allows children to emerge from challenging experiences with a positive sense of self and of the future. Children who develop resilience are better able to face disappointment, learn from failure, cope with loss, and adapt to change. Resilience is not a genetic trait but is derived from the ways children learn to think and act when faced with obstacles, large and small. Studies show that the primary factor in building resilience is having caring and supportive relationships.

Supportive relationships with parents, teachers, and other caring adults become sources of strength when children work through painful situations and emotions. When we help young people cultivate an approach to life that views obstacles as a critical part of success, we help them develop resilience. Developing resilience is a personal journey.

Factors to consider in building resilience: • Make connections. Good relationships provide social support.

• Avoid seeing crises as insurmountable problems. You can’t change that stressful events happen, but you can change how you interpret and respond.

• Accept that change is a part of living. Certain goals may no longer be attainable, redirect focus to circumstances you can alter.

• Move toward your goals. Develop realistic goals and do something regularly, even small accomplishments will move you toward your goals • Take decisive actions. Act on adverse situations as much as you can. Take decisive actions rather than detaching from problems and just wishing they would go away.

• Look for opportunities for selfdiscovery. Look for growth resulting from struggle or loss.

• Nurture a positive view of yourself.

Have confidence in your problemsolving and trust your instincts.

ALZHEIMER’S SAFETY: DRIVING & DEMENTIA (PART I) Submitted by Bonnie Lewis, Dependent Care Educator Dementia is not a specific disease, but rather a word used to describe symptoms caused by disorders that affect the brain, including Alzheimer’s. A driver with dementia will eventually become unable to drive, due to challenges with reaction time and decision-making. However, a diagnosis of dementia doesn’t necessarily mean that a person should stop driving right away.

Warning signs that could mean dementia is affecting a person’s driving ability and it is time to stop: • Forgetting how to locate familiar places.

• Failing to observe traffic signs and signals.

• Becoming angry or confused while driving.

• Often hitting curbs while driving.

• Confusing the brake and gas pedals.

• Forgetting his or her destination during a trip.

If an older driver you know has experienced any of these warning signs, ensure that the driver consults a doctor.

The doctor might write a referral to an occupational therapy driver rehabilitation specialist for an evaluation to help determine fitness to drive ability.

Recent technologies have vastly increased the safety of Alzheimer’s patients and armed their caregivers with potentially lifesaving tools. Colorful Rice Salad Yields about 6 servings

INGREDIENTS Dressing: 1/3 cup fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon thawed orange juice concentrate 1 ½ teaspoon olive oil ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper 4 cloves garlic, crushed ½ teaspoon curry spice Salad: 2 cups cooked brown rice 1 cup raisins 1 cup frozen green peas, thawed ½ cup frozen corn, thawed ½ cup thinly sliced green onions 1 15.5 ounce can garbanzo beans, rinsed & drained ½ cup green pepper, diced ½ cup celery, chopped ½ cup carrots, shredded

DIRECTIONS Combine all salad ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Combine all dressing ingredients in a jar. Cover tightly and shake until well blended.

Pour dressing over salad mixture and toss well to coat. Cover and chill for 1 hour.

TAI CHI FOR SENIORS April 4

CCESC welcomed 9 new Master Gardener Volunteers to the community horticulture program with a graduation celebration. Master Gardener Volunteers completed 60 hours of training and will complete 100 hours of volunteer work across the county in the next two years.

HOME FIREARM SAFETY April 9 & 21

After a brief hiatus, Caregiver Resource Center coordinator Bonnie Lewis jumped right back into spring by starting a new round of Tai Chi for Fall Prevention. Over 28 seniors are attending this evidencebased, eight week series, which is one of the most popular programs the CCESC CRC offers.

Once again, 10 Sullivan County residents completed the Firearm Safety Course with 4-H volunteer and NRA instructor, Richard Sheldon. Participants learn how to safely handle and store firearms; the class is a precursor to acquiring a pistol permit in New York State.

The Creating Healthy Schools and Communities team partnered with Catskill Regional Medical Center and Cancer Services, Sullivan Renaissance, American Heart Association, and Eat Smart NY to host 75 professionals at the first ever county-wide Wellness Coordinator Training. Participants learned how to start wellness committees in their place of work and took home strategies for making the healthy choice, the easy choice.

The first regular 4-H Horse Bowl practice was held at the Extension Education Center, with 3 volunteers and 15 “horsecrazy kids” in attendance. These are open to all youth with an interest in horses; you don’t need to own a horse to participate.

VIRTUAL DEMENTIA TOUR April 19 Over 15 curious participants experienced what it’s like to suffer from Alzheimer’s or other dementia related disorders during the Virtual Dementia Tour. Through the use of special gloves, audio, and vision tools the program seeks to help caregivers and families better understand the challenges of their loved ones with related diseases.

BUSINESS PLANNING 101 April 19 A group of 10 aspiring entrepreneurs attended the first in a multi-session workshop offering with business planning expert Charlene Finnerty of Sullivan County SCORE. Participants learn a stepby-step process to create a customized plan for bringing their business vision to reality.

WE CONNECT TRAVELS TO GERMANY April 20 Guest speaker Heinrich Strauch shared his story of coming to America from Germany and highlighting interesting and exciting things about his home country for 15 4-H We Connect Global Citizenship program participants at the Boys and Girls Club in Liberty Middle School. Everyone enjoyed bratwurst and spätzle for dinner!

TELLING THE STORY OF FLY TYING IN THE CATSKILLS Written by Glenn Pontier, CFFCM Executive Director

How does an educational organization reach young people – or any people, for that matter – in this day and age when most communication is instantaneous and electronic? Is it possible to “tell one’s story” through words and artifacts instead of on the internet or in cyberspace?

The new exhibit made its first stop at the Livingston Manor Free Library on April 7 followed by an April 15 reception with fly tyer Bob Adams.

“Fly Fishing in the Catskills” was first unveiled at CFFCM on April 1 – Opening Day of Trout Season in New York State.

The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum (CFFCM) is answering these questions with a traveling historical display about “Fly Fishing in the Catskills” that will spend a month at each library in Sullivan County over the next year.

Here is the library schedule through September:

The display explains the elements of fly fishing and introduces the story of how the sport began in the Catskill Mountains. Panels explain fly casting, bamboo rod making and the importance of water. Bird feathers, animal fur and other materials used to tie artificial flies are presented on a facsimile fly tyer’s desk. There are even comic books of Mickey Mouse and Porky Pig fly fishing.

Program Spotlight AARP TAX AIDE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM of NY Capital Region celebrated another successful tax season, and presented Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County with a plaque for its long-time support of the service, offering registration, facilities, and tech assistance.

The AARP volunteer-run program, hosted by CCESC, offers free tax preparation and assistance to individuals and seniors with low to moderate income.

The AARP Tax Aide program served over 300 people in Sullivan County this year!

We thank AARP volunteers for all they do for our community and are proud to receive this plaque. Until next year!

We take a break from our busy schedules, brandish a grabbing tool, and head out in search of trash! Our journey is shared via social media each year and just as always, we filled bags and buckets to the brim, trying to collect a larger pile than even the year before.

This year, staff removed a lot of garbage from the gardens and surrounding wooded areas, working in the rain!

The staff felt a sense of accomplishment and pride in our environment. Every day is Earth Day, so get out there and go on your own adventure!
