Colleen Monaghan, Executive Director cm638@cornell.edu Spring has sprung and as usual there’s lots of seasonal energy buzzing around the Extension Education Center! This month, we have so many opportunities for every kind of resident and visitor to the county, it’s hard to know where to start. Seniors can win raffle prizes and meet the dozens of people and organizations that provide opportunities to engage with their peers and with services at the Senior Expo in Monticello.

The CCESC Caregiver Resource Center is also offering two new, evidence based programs: Tai Chi for Fall Prevention and Powerful Tools for Caregivers. We all care about our seniors; it’s time to make sure we’re providing them with the highest quality, most effective services and opportunities!

May also marks the annual three-day Master Food Preserver training program. There are still a few spots left, so give us a ring or hop on www.sullivancce.org/events to register.

The Master Gardener Volunteers and Community Horticulture program are gearing up with the Catskill Edible Garden Project to get CCESC’s eight teaching gardens in shape for the Spring Gardening Series, the Junior Master Gardener Series, and the next full scale Master Gardener Volunteer training. If you have considered becoming a Master Gardener Volunteer, this program is for you. Over seven months, you’ll learn the skills to serve as a CCESC Master Gardener Volunteer, sharing the knowledge and resources of the land grant university system with your friends and neighbors. Leveraging volunteer capacity is just one way we transfer the research of Cornell University to the local community to help make Sullivan County beautiful and sustainable.

To celebrate Earth Day, CCE staff and volunteers took to our nature trail and cleaned it up, so feel free to come on by one of these days to enjoy the 1.2 mile walk. You’ll see ongoing tree and May, 2016

trail work as the Nutrition & Healthy Families department works with Sullivan BOCES Natural Science students to prep for the installation of outdoor community fitness equipment. We’re excited to see this demonstration project come to fruition through the summer months. Once complete, we’ll be able to share best practices and pitfalls with municipalities interested in installing their own outdoor fitness trails.

In addition to building opportunities for physical activity, the team is growing Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs at worksites across the county. 95% of last years’ participants said the CSA program helped them increase their fruit and vegetable intake, and 97% said participation in the program made them try a fruit or vegetable that they had never tried before!

Sites in process include the Government Center in Monticello, Sullivan County Community Campus in Liberty, several Sullivan BOCES sites, and Catskill Regional Medical Center. If you know of an employer with 10 or more interested employees, we may be able to help make your worksite CSA accessible.

The CCESC ag team welcomes new Ag Business Educator, Jennifer Simpson. Jennifer has 4 years as an Extension educator in another county and comes with a dairy background.

We’re excited to learn from her and to show her around Sullivan County.

The ag team is hosting a Sullivan County farm tour for elected officials and is working with partners to educate our leadership and consumers about the importance of agriculture in our daily and economic lives. To make sure agriculture continues to be a viable driver of economic development in the county, CCESC also has a strong focus on educating young people about farm opportunities and skills. The upcoming Youth Tractor Safety Training, required for young people to use most farm machinery, will make sure participants have the knowledge and skills necessary to be safe and effective in their work on the farm. Current adult tracts include the Ag Business Series and the Beginning Farmer Series. All registration is open.

Admittedly, we’re a bit overwhelmed!

But this is just a taste of what’s happening at Extension. As always, my door is open to the community. I hope you continue to feel comfortable reaching out to help us understand how you see Extension contributing to the vitality of Sullivan County. Submitted by Michelle Lipari, Agriculture & 4-H Educator Caring for a horse’s feet and hooves will safeguard its long-term soundness.

Following are some tips to keep a horse’s feet healthy.

Shoeing or Trimming Interval Summer In the summer, horses should be trimmed or shod at least every six to eight weeks. However, a responsible horse owner should trim his or her horse's hooves as often as needed. In some cases, performance horses may need more frequent trimming.

Winter Hooves generally grow more slowly in the winter. Because of the slower growth rate, horses can be trimmed at a longer interval. For example, every six to twelve weeks may suffice. The trimming or shoeing interval depends on each horse, and the amount of hoof it grows.

Hoof Balance A balanced hoof allows the horse to move better and puts less stress and strain on bones, tendons, and ligaments. The ideal foot has the following characteristics: a straight hoof-pastern angle, easy break-over, adequate heel support, and medial-lateral balance.

Straight Hoof-Pastern Angle: There is a straight line from the pastern down through the front of the hoof wall. This allows the bones to be aligned properly from pastern to coffin bone. Medial lateral balance is exhibited by the foot landing evenly from side to side as the horse walks.

Treatment Tips: Apply hoof moisturizers to the hoof wall and sole during dry weather or if the hoof is brittle or developing cracks. Proper nutrition and commercially available hoof supplements can help improve hoof quality.

Most importantly, trim the horse on a regular basis.

Easy Break-Over: The toe is not too long and is squared, rounded, or rolled.

This allows easier movement with each step. Too much break-over can result in health problems as well.

Winter Hoof Care

Adequate Heel Support: The shoe extends back to the end of the hoof wall and supports the back of the entire leg. Ideally, the back edge of the shoe is under a line drawn down the center of the cannon bone.

Hoof Wall Care Weather conditions can cause damage to the hoof. During dry weather, or with frequent changes from wet to dry, horses are prone to having dry, brittle feet that easily develop hoof cracks.

Prolonged trimming intervals can cause elongated toes, and the hoof wall often develops cracks due to the unsupported hoof wall. Unfortunately, some horses are born with poor hoof quality and are more susceptible to problems.

In the winter, special care should be taken if the horse lives outside or is turned out. Snow can ball up under the sole and cause bruising or imbalance.

Ice can be very slippery if the horse is shod with normal shoes.

Winter Tips: If the horse is normally barefoot, leave the shoes off . Horses usually slip less when barefoot or not shod. Horses that are prone to sole bruising may need shoes. If the horse is shod through the winter, have snow pads placed under the shoes and small cogs, borium or nails placed at the heels. Snow pads will prevent snow and ice from building up under the shoe and the cogs or nails will allow for better traction. Submitted by Melinda Meddaugh, Ag & Food Systems Team Leader There are many options for homeowners and businesses to participate in solar programs for both their own personal use, for community distributed generation solar, or to permit a solar farm on one’s property, which may involve signing a lease. Before signing any solar farm lease, it is important to understand one’s options and ask important questions. Below are helpful questions and answers for landowners, regarding solar farm leases.

Q. What is solar?

A. Solar is “of the sun”, and is used to define energy (electricity) or heat generated by a device that is exposed to the sun. Solar thermal refers to a method to heat water, using collectors or panels that transfer the sun’s energy to a liquid. Solar electric (i.e., photovoltaic energy) uses the light of the sun to create electricity.

Q. What are the different types of solar options?

A. Solar Array for Residential and Business Use: This is a system sized to the electricity needs of a specific home, business, farm, or public site or use (e.g., street lights). These are relatively small systems and, in New York State, are sized to produce no more than 110% of annual average electric use.

Solar Farms (Utility Scale Generation Facility): Lease Option: Typically, a solar developer who has secured an investment portfolio to build a utility scale power plant will seek out prime property to lease for the life of the system (20 -25 years).

Community Distributed Generation (Community DG) Option: Developing micro grids for community resiliency (i.e., Shared Renewables) allows customers who cannot site solar, small wind, or other DG on their own property to participate directly in off-site projects through net metering. This is a very new possibility in NYS, and has the capability of bringing clean, locally produced electricity to home and business owners, and to municipal governments and schools. Community Distributed Generation is an important element in strengthening the electric grid.

Q. What are watts, kilowatts, and kilowatt hours?

A. The size of a solar electric system is often described in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). One kW = 1,000 W. Watts are a unit of power, just like the horsepower of an engine. They express the maximum possible output of energy the system can produce at any point in time. When sunlight strikes solar electric panels, they produce electricity that

is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh) when it is used. Kilowatt hours are the units of energy you buy from your utility and use in your home to run appliances, lighting, and electronics. A 100 watt light will require 100 watts of electricity to illuminate. If the light is on for one hour, it consumes 100 watts or .1 kilowatt hours of electricity.

Q. Where can solar panels be located?

A. Solar panels need to face south to be most productive. Typically, solar panels are mounted on south facing roofs, or in the case of the typical flat roof of a school, factory, or office building, the solar panels will be oriented to face south. Solar panels can also be mounted on poles which elevate the array (the combination of solar panels) above the ground, or close to the ground on specially designed racks. The placement of solar panels on mounting systems to cover parking lots is rapidly gaining acceptance. The overarching rule for placement is that they must face the sun and be located in such a way that nothing shades them. A new trend is to face arrays to the west, to take advantage of the afternoon sun and to generate additional power at a time when grid load is high.

Submitted by Dayna Valenti-Gaeta, Community Horticulture Program Educator Mid-May (after May 15) is the time to plant most vegetable and annual transplants. If you have not purchased your plant materials yet, get a list of recommended vegetable and annual varieties from the Cooperative Extension office.

Whether they come from a garden center or are homegrown, be sure they are correctly hardened off. To do this, expose young plants to outdoor conditions during the day while protecting them from cool evening temperatures. Gradually increase the exposure so plants become acclimated and do not suffer too much from transplant shock.

Soil Preparation Soil should not be worked when it is too wet. An easy way to tell is to take some in your hand and make a fist.

Open your hand and touch the soil gently. If it stays in the shape of your fist it’s too wet. If it falls apart, it’s dry enough to work and begin preparation.

It is important to see if any lime must be added to the soil. This can be accomplished through a soil pH test offered by the Cooperative Extension office and many garden centers. Bring approximately one cup of soil that has been taken from 4 to 6 inches below the soil surface and at different locations within the planting area. This will give a good representative sample. The ideal pH for vegetables and annuals is between 6.2 to 6.8. Your soil pH test results will indicate if lime is needed and at what rate it should be applied.

Lime should not be applied to areas near acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons, azaleas and mountain laurel.

Fertilizer is added next. If the area was planted and fertilized the previous year, add two pounds of 5-10-5 or 5-10 -10 slow-release fertilizer per 100 square feet. If not, add five pounds per 100 square feet. Organic matter should be incorporated into the soil to add nutrients and increase water holdPage 6

or overcast day to plant your annual or vegetable garden. Plants will not experience as much transplant shock. If this is not possible, plan to mist the new transplants occasionally for the next couple of days.

ing capacity. This can include compost, leaf mold, dried manure, or peat moss. Thoroughly mix the lime, fertilizer, and organic matter into the top six to eight inches of soil. Where annuals are being planted around trees and shrubs, take care not to injure the existing roots.

You might consider renting a rototiller to help turn your soil. A pitchfork will work. Rake the soil to level grade or neatly mounded rows for raised beds, being sure to take out any large stones. Your planting site is now ready.

Planting Adequate spacing between plants and rows is necessary for good plant growth.

Annuals and vegetables planted too closely will not grow as well as those spaced properly.

Transplanting Planting depth is critical. Plants should only be placed as deep as they were in their original pot or flat. The soil should meet the soil line of the plant. If they are planted too deeply, they may rot; if planted too shallow, the roots could dry out. Tomatoes are an exception; they can be planted deeper than the original soil line.

If possible, it is best to pick a cloudy Extension Connection

If transplants have been grown in peat pots, remove the upper lip of the pot and make a few tears in the peat moss for roots to get through easily.

When using Jiffy-7 expandable peat pots, make a few cuts in the netting surrounding the peat before planting.

For vegetables that require staking, it’s best to put the stakes in when the plants are still small. This way the roots can grow around them rather than putting the stakes in when the plants are established, and possibly harming the root system.

Seeding For direct seeding into the soil, follow packet directions for depth and spacing. Be sure not to plant too many seeds or extensive thinning will be required after sprouting. Also, be sure to mark the location of sown seeds with a waterproof label for easy reference.

Mulches A mulch should be put down in your garden to decrease moisture loss and discourage weed growth. There are many materials from which to choose: wood chips, salt hay, sawdust, newspaper, black plastic, and new geotextile fabrics. These new mulching fabrics form an effective weed barrier similar to black plastic but allow for greater water and gas exchange. Sawdust and woodchips require adding extra amounts of nitrogen to the soil.

But today, in our world of technology and new conveniences, most of the physical activity has been taken out of our lives. About one in three, or 31%, of U.S. adults report that they participate in no physical activity during time of leisure. This lack of physical activity is having a profoundly negative effect on the health of children and adults. Data shows that a combination of lack of exercise and poor dietary habits is the second largest underlying cause of death, with smoking being the largest. Regular physical activity prevents chronic disease and can reverse the negative outcomes of the bullets below. 

17.3 Million people die each year from cardiovascular disease; this number is expected to grow to more than 23.6 million by 2030.



21 Million people have adult-onset (non–insulin-dependent) diabetes.



140,000 People are diagnosed with colon cancer each year.



80 Million people have high blood pressure. 77 Percent are using antihypertensive medication while 54 percent of those have their condition controlled.

 

Over 159 million U.S. adults are overweight or obese.

About 24 million children (31%) are overweight, and about 13 million children (17%) are obese.

The best reason to routinely include physical activity in your everyday life is that you genuinely want to improve your health and fitness. Most Americans are surprised at the amount of evidence that links regular physical activity to health improvement. Regular physical activity improves health in the following ways:

Reduces the risk of premature death Reduces the risk heart disease Reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes

Research has shown that everyday physical activities can accomplish some of the same goals as regimented exercise with less of the negativity associated with planned fitness programs. You don’t have to do all your physical activity at one time - ten minutes here - five minutes there, has been found to have a positive impact on health indicators. A little bit of activity throughout the day is just as beneficial as thirty minutes at one time.

Remember, the goal is to accumulate thirty minutes or more of moderate activity each day. Try these suggestions:   



Take stairs instead of the elevator.

Park as far from doors as you can.

Walk around the outside aisles of the store at least once before starting your shopping.

Walk or march in place as you talk on the phone or watch TV.

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that you are more likely to stick with doing your physical activity if you:     



Think you will benefit from your activity Do activities you enjoy Can do the activities on a regular basis Can fit the activities into your schedule Feel that the activities don’t impose a financial or social cost you aren’t willing to pay Have few negative consequences from doing your activity (negative peer pressure, lost time) Extension Connection

Feeling especially motivated? Here are some examples of higher intensity endurance activities you can try:  Walking briskly (2 miles in 30 minutes), climbing stairs or hills 

Swimming laps, bicycling up hills

Mopping or scrubbing floors, hiking, jogging



Gardening for 30-45 minutes, jumping rope for 15 minutes



Pushing a stroller 1.5 miles in 30 minutes

Compiled by Marylin Jones, 4-H Program Coordinator 4-H members have opportunities to undertake leadership roles in their clubs by becoming club officers. The 4-H Club Secretary plays an integral and important role by maintaining accurate minutes of meetings, taking role, and recording attendance, and handling and keeping a file of correspondence, reports and rules made by the club.

4-H secretaries achieve Honor Secretary status by submitting at least 10 monthly reports to the CCESC office during the program year. Below is a sample of some of the clubs’ work.

4-H Moo Juicers - Maggie K. December: The club ate lots of food and had lots of fun with friends and family! January: The club discussed Public Presentations and practicing presentations at the next meeting.

Plans were made for International Night and members offered ideas for a club trip. The club would like to offer a breeding “tutorial” for its members.

February: Dairy Bowl practices were planned. A club trip to visit a Jersey Farm of world class cows was proposed and discussed. The club will participate in the Hoards Dairyman Judging Contest. March: Discussion of club member participation in regional Dairy Bowl competitions.

Hoards Dairyman Judging Contest materials are due. Discussion of upcoming educational opportunities. Discussion continues of a club trip to be planned, possibly bull barns or Lawton’s Farm.

4-H Puppy Pals - Caleb E. January: Thank you was shared for the amazing job decorating the library for the holiday. Marylin Jones came to our meeting, discussed what 4-H has to offer and answered questions about the Extension office. The group approved paying $5 per child to get wind turbine kits for our spring S.T.E.M. project.

We got into our International Night groups and started our posters and disPage 8

plays. We voted for Medieval Times for our trip choice and are working on a date for Simple Supper. February: We discussed the date for Simple Supper, and discussed a Pampered Chef fundraiser. We discussed the Public Presentations, made tape resist art pieces, and had root beer floats with treats.

March: We collected ingredients and discussed the Simple Supper.

Kenoza Lake Hummingbirds Emma M. January (four meetings): We baked apple and pumpkin pie from scratch with homemade crust. We made a chocolate and coconut cream pie. Everything, from the chocolate to the meringue on the coconut cream pie, was homemade. February (four meetings): We started our sewing unit on the basics of making a pillow. These pillows will be used as prizes for our annual game of bingo at New Hope Community. We made cookies and chocolatecovered pretzels for a local St. Baldrick’s event. March: We packaged our pretzels and cookies to sell at the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Jeffersonville, NY. All of the proceeds will go to the Saint Baldrick’s Foundation.

Youngsville Busy Beavers Kaydence E. February: We made Valentine’s lanterns with recycled jars, tissue paper, and stickers. We practiced Public Presentations and we had some laughs as well as some yummy food. We also are making paintings of cats with step by step instructions from Diane Hughson.

Older American’s Month 2016 Celebrated with Sullivan County Senior Exposition Tuesday, May 17 from 10 am-2 pm Monticello Fire House Older adults are a growing and increasingly vital part of our country. The contributions they make to our communities are varied, deeply rooted, and include influential roles in the nation’s economy, politics, and the arts. Beginning in 1963, May celebrates Older American’s Month (OAM), led by the Administration for Community Living.

The annual observance offers the opportunity to learn about, support, and celebrate our nation’s older citizens.

This year’s theme, “Blaze a Trail”, emphasizes the ways in which older adults are reinventing themselves through new work and new passions, engaging their communities, and blazing a trail of positive impact on the lives of people of all ages.

The CCESC Caregiver Resource Center is assisting the Older Adults Transitional Support (OATS) collaboration to host a 2016 Senior Exposition to recognize Older American’s Month. The expo’s focus is on how older adults can find resources and new avenues to remain active, healthy, and engaged in our community. While the national OAM logo is to “Blaze a Trail”, locally, OATS is also encouraging seniors to remember “To Rest Is to Rust”!

The expo will have demonstrations on: fraud, tai chi, music therapy, chair exercises, savory snacks, standing up safely from the floor, and Silver Sneakers.

The day concludes with a raffle drawing of multiple gifts all provided by the attending businesses, each prize valued at a minimum of fifty dollars. Introduction to Farming Workshop March 10 Twelve beginning farmers attended the workshop and learned about how to set up a farm, agricultural districts and assessments, regulations, marketing, and business planning.

Shooting Sports Safety Night March 18 The Shooting Sports Program hosted a safety night to kick off the start of the season. Twenty-two youth attended the program along with adults, and nine volunteer instructors. This was a great start to the Shooting Sports Program.

Meetings will be held every Friday from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Sportsmen’s Den in Callicoon (weather permitting).

Agriculture Business Planning Workshop

Powerful Tools for Caregivers April 8, 15, 22, 29 (two classes to be held May 6 and the 20) The Caregiver Resource Center, with the assistance of Lily Stettner, LCSW, is meeting with caregivers at the Liberty Library to conduct this nationally recognized program, geared to assist caregivers to improve self-care, manage emotions, improve self-efficacy, and find community resources.

District Public Presentations April 9 Twenty-one Sullivan County 4-H’ers qualified to advance to District Public Presentations at SUNY Ulster. Ten 4-H’ers, ages 9-18, three volunteers, and a 4-H staff person were able to represent Sullivan County at this advanced public speaking event. Sullivan County 4-H Youth Development took the lead in organizing the event, which attracted approximately 90 youth from eight counties of the Southeast District.

March 30 Fifteen existing and beginning farmers attended the workshop and learned first -hand the different elements of a business plan, the importance of such a plan, and different financial structures and recordkeeping.

Volunteer Potluck April 2 Over 30 people came out to enjoy a meal and reminisce about all the special reasons each volunteer dedicates their valuable time to serving the CCESC mission. The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia, & Alzheimer’s Disease April 12 Sixteen caregivers and professionals attended this program that reviewed the stages of the disease, detection, causes, risk factors, treatment, and research.

Tai Chi for Arthritis Mondays and Wednesdays (sixteen sessions, starting April 18 and ending June 15) Fourteen individuals joined this hourlong class to learn the basics of tai chi, an evidence-based program that promotes gentle exercise to prevent falls, supported by the NYS Department of Health.

of the Community Horticulture Program Spring Gardening Series. What varieties to plant, when to plant, sowing in succession, plant spacing, and amending the soil were all talking points throughout the two hours.

Budgeting Workshop April 20 & 21 Energy and Consumer Educator, Sean Welsh, provided a budgeting workshop for 10 participants at BOCES on St. Johns Street in Monticello. The class was provided at CCESC in Liberty again on April 21, giving participants a chance to learn about communication with family members during tough financial times, and tips on creating a spending plan within a family dynamic.

Earth Day Event April 21 Educational materials on energy conservation were provided to over 200 Monticello 5th grade students at the SUNY Sullivan Earth Day event. Students also got an opportunity to interact with the Compare-o-Meter to look at the different energy demands of various lighting technologies.

Hiring a Professional Caregiver: HELP 101 April 26 Thirteen individuals attended this class, reviewing how to find in-home help, definitions of professional caregivers and what they are approved to provide, and smart practices when hiring privately.

Identity Theft April 26 The Energy and Consumer Education program presented to the White Sulphur Springs’ Senior Group on ways to protect oneself from becoming a victim of Identity Theft. 34 seniors were in attendance at this senior group meeting.

August 28 | Tusten Mtn Trail | CCESC, Liberty Another hike designed for a younger group, this 3 mile long trail is moderately difficult and takes two hours to complete.

October 8 | Mongaup River Trail | Gov’t Center, Monticello - During prime leaf-peeping season, this moderately difficult, 2 mile long hike is appropriate for older adults and families and takes about an hour to complete.

(Continued from page 5) Q. What is a single phase and three phase transmission line?

A. Transmission lines are either single phase or three phase. If you look at the top of the utility pole that serves your home and see only two wires, that is single phase. Single phase systems have two circuits, each carrying 120 volts, which is sufficient to power residential needs and medical facilities.

Three phase circuits have three 120 volt lines, and are used to power larger loads like schools, stores, and factories.

Q. Are solar farms considered commercial or residential?

A. Solar farms (i.e., utility scale power generators) are considered a commercial use of the land. The exception is if the electricity produced by the array is used solely to power a farm. In that case, the solar array is considered farm equipment.

Q. Are solar panels considered real property?

A. Yes. Real Property is defined in Section 102 (12) of the Real Property Tax Law. Included in this definition are buildings and other structures… erected under or above the land, or affixed thereto. This includes solar panels.

Q. How could a solar farm lease affect your assessment and property tax?

A. Your assessor will assign a value to the solar panels that are erected on your property. This increase in value will increase the overall assessment of the property.

Q. Are there tax exemptions for solar panels? How does this apply to solar farms?

A. Yes. Section 487 of the Real Property Tax Law allows for a solar exemption. This exemption is for 15 years and the amount of the exemption Page 12

would be to the extent of any increase in the value attributed to the solar energy system. However, special district and special ad valorem taxes are not exempt.



Who is responsible for the potential increase in taxes as a result of the solar farm?



Who is responsible for maintenance of the solar farm?

Q. If I place a solar farm on my property, will it affect my agricultural assessment?

A. Yes. If the placement of the solar array is on land that presently receives an agricultural assessment, any acreage no longer being used for agricultural purposes would not be eligible for an agricultural assessment. In addition, a penalty for conversion would apply.



Is the solar farm location designated prior to signing a lease?



Who is responsible for any liability as a result of the solar farm?



Is there a right of way to the solar farm? How big is it, and where?



How does the solar farm lease affect my farm operation? Can I perform my regular farm practices or will it restrict it?

Q. If I am a farm operation located in an agricultural district, do I have protection from NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets if I were to place a solar farm on my property?

A. If the solar array is sized to meet the electric needs of the farm and if the electricity produced by the array is used solely for farm use (not exceeding 110% of the farm’s anticipated demand), then the array is considered farming equipment according to current NYS Agriculture and Markets guidance documents. The term “solar farm” is a euphemism that does not speak to the purpose of solar arrays of utility scale proportion, and is not used solely for farm use. Therefore, solar farms do not receive protection under NYS Agriculture and Markets’ law. To learn more on this, visit: agriculture.ny.go.

A. Recommended questions are as follows:  What is the term of the lease? Can it be extended, and under what conditions?

Nutrition: Maintaining a horse’s nutrition can help alleviate some hoof problems. Feeding good quality hay, supplementing the appropriate amount of vitamins and trace minerals, and making sure the horse has constant access to fresh, clean water is important for hoof health and overall horse health. Poor nutrition can lead to future hoof problems, and correcting a horse’s nutrition can gradually improve hoof health. Cooperation between horse owners, veterinarians, and equine nutritionists is needed to ensure proper horse nutrition.

Common Hoof Problems Poor Shoeing or Trimming: Long toes can results in collapsed heels, and strain on flexor tendons and the navicular bone. If the horse is too upright it can cause trauma to the coffin bone and joint. An imbalanced hoof can cause stress on the collateral ligaments and joints.

Hoof Cracks: Horizontal cracks or blowouts are usually caused by an inju-

ry to the coronary band or a blow to the hoof wall. Horizontal cracks or blowouts do not usually cause lameness. Grass cracks are usually seen in long, unshod horses and can be corrected with trimming and shoeing.

Sand cracks results from injury to the coronary band or white-line disease that breaks out at the coronary band.

Sand cracks can be a cause of lameness. Treatment for sand cracks includes determining the cause and removing it, floating the hoof wall (not letting it bear weight), and/or fixation or patching of the crack.

Thrush: Thrush is a foul-smelling, black exudate, usually found around the frog, that is associated with wet, soiled conditions. Thrush can invade sensitive tissue and cause lameness.

Treatment includes keeping stalls or barn clean and dry to help eliminate thrush.

Solar Abscess: Solar abscess is an infection in the sole of the hoof that can lead to acute or severe lameness. Solar abscess can be caused by trauma, bruising, or a foreign body. Treatments include removal of the foreign body if

possible, soaking the hoof in warm water and Epsom salt, and keeping the hoof bandaged, clean, and dry.

Laminitis: Laminitis is inflammation of the sensitive laminae. Also called founder, laminitis is rotation and/or sinking of the coffin bone. There are several causes of laminitis. Treatments include regular shoeing or trimming, maintaining short toes, and frog and sole support.

Navicular: Navicular syndrome includes disease processes involving the navicular bone, bursa, ligamentous, and/or soft tissue structures. Horses will usually land their toe first due to pain in the heels. Causes of navicular syndrome include hereditary predisposition (quarter horses and thoroughbreds), faulty conformation, hoof imbalance, and exercise on hard surfaces.

Treatments include shoeing, maintaining a short toe, elevating the heels and good break-over, and pads.

Partner Spotlight - Liberty Public Library Liberty Library has been an important partner of Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County over the years and is right in our backyard. The library has collaborated with practically all of CCESC’s program areas in myriad ways. The Caregiver Resource Center of CCESC and Office for the Aging is currently being hosted at Liberty Public Library for its free Powerful Tools for Caregivers series that began in April and will continue until May 20. CCE Eat Smart NY Community Nutrition Educator has presented Eating Healthy on a Budget to the Liberty Library’s Senior Coffee Talk group and has more planned for the summer. Consumer and financial education programs have also been offered at the library. Staff at the library assisted the Community Horticulture program by participating in a “Grandma Goes Green” project during Agricultural Literature Week. CCESC has collaborated with the Liberty Library for various science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related youth programs, including a “geocaching” series involving Livingston Manor Free Library and Morgan Outdoors, a wildlife-themed winter walk and workshop for families, and helped organize several field trips to the Extension Education Center from the George L. Cooke Elementary School in Monticello. We have even teamed up to construct and install seasonal StoryWalk® signage and corresponding activities. Our neighbor and our friend, CCESC appreciates the partnership we have with Liberty Public Library.

As our first Social Media Volunteer, Garrett Newfield provides a unique type of service to Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County.

Using social media to promote CCESC’s educational programs and opportunities, the Social Garrett works with CCESC Public Affairs Coordinator and brainstorms ideas for new strategies on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Garrett has a background in marketing and sales from a family business located in NYC, and is comfortable on both PC and Mac environments. Most importantly, he is involved in his local community and has a personality that makes him a pleasure to work with. Garrett was recognized at the Volunteer/Donor Open House & Potluck Brunch in early April for being one of our first specialized volunteers and helping with this increasingly important outreach method. His outstanding participation in county, district, and state 4-H experiences has broadened his personal development: International Night, District Public Presentations, Animal Crackers, the Agri-Business Conference at SUNY Cobleskill, the State Teen Action Representatives Retreat, Junior Award opportunities, as well as exhibition of his outstanding projects at The Great New York State Fair in Syracuse.

Staff Spotlight - Jennifer Simpson Jennifer joins the CCESC staff in the position of Agriculture Business Educator. This position is a recommendation of the County Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan, is identified in the CCESC Ag & Food Systems Plan of Work, and is funded by the Sullivan County Department of Planning & Environmental Management. Jen will work directly with farmers on business development strategies. Tasks include: to contribute to and maintain the CCE ag database; to engage in ongoing communications; and to work with a proactive team of professionals to develop and/or make referrals to resources that support business growth and address issues, such as financial and business planning, estate planning, farm transfers ,and cash flow projections.

Jennifer grew up on a dairy farm in Port Jervis, NY and previously worked at Delaware Valley University as the assistant superintendent of the dairy barn and as an adjunct professor teaching dairy judging. Jennifer also worked at CCE Orange County as a dairy and field crops educator. We’re excited to welcome Jen to the team and to have a new knowledge base to share with the Sullivan County farming community.

Farm Spotlight - Beaverdam Brook Farm Matt Burns and his wife Jane own a vegetable farm in Ferndale, NY. He grows the alphabet soup of vegetables on his farm that was established in 1988 on a few acres of land.

With his trusty tractor and farm implements to help him till the soil, he produces for area farmers markets and local restaurants. As the new growing season nears, Matt is ready to get to work full time on the farm and hopes to increase yield and begin new practices in reduced tillage and weed suppression.
