Dear Extension Family: I’m writing this on a gray, rainy day after the Master Gardener Volunteer program’s Annual Plant Sale. Not only did we have a beautiful weekend ripe for getting those planting beds ready, but with your help and the countless hours of work by the Master Gardener Volunteers we raised over $2,000 in just about one hour! I can’t thank you all enough for making this event worth the effort every year!

Now that the season’s kick-off event has come and gone, in this month’s pages you’ll see more than a dozen chances to join Extension staff in fun learning opportunities that will help you and your neighbors solve everyday problems. From soil health, to business planning, knitting, and public speaking, to raising livestock, balancing your checkbook, and understanding how to care for your aging loved ones, Extension’s staff is working through the summer to bring you fun, experiential programs.

Year over year, CCE Sullivan has increased the number of programs we offer, the number of contacts we’ve made, and the number of volunteers and young people we work with. But aside from temporary grants for special projects, our funding has remained stagnant for a decade, and in the ten years prior to that, CCE funding was cut by about 20% across funding sources due to the financial crisis. After having just received another clean audit, we can clearly see that revenues from program fees are also down by about 15%.

On one hand the numbers above paint a picture of more Sullivan County residents able to access our programs at lower costs. On the other hand, this model is not sustainable for the long term. We are simply not able to keep up with the demand of inquiries we receive, especially as it relates to positive youth development and afterschool programming, financial and consumer education, and entrepreneurship. In addition, while we have access to the best parenting education programs in the world through our connection with Cornell University, we just don’t have the staffing to deliver them.

These programming challenges, paired with the crumbling driveway and parking lot at the Extension Education Center, cause a strain on our day-to-day operations. As we approach our busiest season, please consider coming out to see our educators and program coordinators in action, to support them. Consider a one-time capital gift, or link us to potential donors who share our vision for a productive and healthy Sullivan County through informal, experiential learning.

We live to provide the highest quality, research-informed learning opportunities for people across the lifespan to live better lives. We need and value your ongoing support.

HOT HAY ALERT: PREVENT HAY FIRES IN YOUR BARN Submitted by Michelle Lipari, Agriculture Educator Risk of Fires Caused by Wet Hay Farmers who make dry hay face problems in field drying most every season. In some seasons, it is extremely challenging to make dry hay. Frequent showers, constant cloudiness and wet field conditions increase the risk of putting up hay that is not dry enough to cure well in the barn. Spontaneous combustion is a real problem for hay producers and buyers. To prevent fires in the haymow, it is extremely important to know the weather conditions under which the hay was made, especially if it is hay you are purchasing and did not make yourself! Stacking small, rectangular bales at 20% moisture or higher, and large or round bales at 16% moisture or more, potentially creates the conditions for a fire. Fires in freshly cut hay usually occur within the first two to six weeks after baling.

How to Tell if You Have a Problem Some heating in new hay is normal.

The quickest way to tell if you have a problem is to drive a long pipe (8-10 ft., 3/8-inch diameter) or an iron or copper rod into the center of the stack. Leave it in for 20 minutes and then pull it out. If it’s too hot to hold in your hand, the hot hay should be removed immediately. Another warning sign is that smoldering hay gives off a strong, pungent odor. If you suspect you have a problem for any reason, monitor the temperature of the haystack. A temperature of 150°F or higher means that hay is entering the danger zone. The following table provides guidance for actions to take depending on the temperature of the hay. The followinng table uses the most conservative values where there were differences.

How to Check the Temperature of a Haymow Commercial hay thermometers are too short to monitor the interior temperature of a haymow. The National Ag Safety Database (www. cdc.gov/nasd), “Hay Fire Prevention and Control”, offers instructions on how to fabricate and use a longer probe to measure temperatures deeper inside the haystack, online at www.cdc.gov/nasd/menu/topic/ fire_safety.html.

Role of Ventilation Depends on Hay Temperature At lower temperatures, ventilation helps to disperse the heating that normally occurs in stored hay. But at temperatures of 175°F or greater, ventilation will fuel a fire and should be avoided.

If Hay Starts On Fire Call 911 immediately if a fire starts in your haymow. Do not wait to see if you can put the fire out yourself. Hay fires can spread very rapidly and soon become uncontrollable. The

NEW YORK STATE FOOD LABELING Submitted by Erica Lynch, Catskills Kitchen Coordinator Are you considering packaging a food product to sell? Be sure to comply with Federal Drug Administration (FDA) regulations for food labeling by keeping in mind the following five basic label requirements: I. Identity in Package Form a. The principal display panel of a label for a food in package form shall bear as one of its principal features a statement of the identity of the commodity by its common or usual name.

a. In the case of a corporation, only the actual corporate name, and this may be preceded or followed by the name of the particular division involved. b. In the case of an individual, partnership or association, the name under which the business is conducted shall be used. c. When the food is not manufactured by the person whose name appears on the label, a qualifying phrase such as “Manufactured for _________”, “Distributed by ________”, or other expression of facts, shall appear with the name.

The place of business shall include the street address, city, State and ZIP code. However, the street address may be omitted if it is shown in a current city or telephone directory.

c. The statement of identity shall be present in bold type on the principal display panel and shall be in a size reasonably related to the most prominent printed matter.

IV. Ingredient Declaration a. The ingredients shall be listed by their common or usual name in descending order of predominance by weight, on a single panel of the label.

c. No abbreviations of an ingredient’s common or usual name are permitted, unless explicitly provided for in the statutes. d. Water used in fabricated foods shall be declared on the label in its order of predominance.

If you are planning to get a water well system installed for the first time—or if you are getting a replacement well installed—planning is important to ensuring an adequate supply of goodquality water.

The actual location of your well often will be determined by factors other than geology. Land surface features such as steep slopes and poorly drained areas are considerations in the location of the well and building.

Whenever possible, wells should be located at higher elevations than the surrounding areas to decrease the potential for contamination.

For the person building a new home, plan your water supply before building your house or drilling your well, if possible. A house is worth little without the water supply you need, which may be where you planned to build the front steps!

For the person seeking a replacement well, the challenge is similar—finding a place on the property where an adequate water supply can be accessed.

In both cases, the location of the well can be critical to water quality, including the degree to which your water is safe. Proper location of a well can help minimize the potential for health risks to the drinking water.

A local drilling contractor likely will have experience in the area and should know about any naturally occurring or manmade contamination in the area groundwater. Also, the

The well should be located so that it is accessible for cleaning, treatment, repair, testing, inspection, and other activities which may be necessary over time.

Also, many state and local governments have established minimum distances between the wellhead and potential contamination threats.

The following separation distances between the wellhead and a contamination source can be used as general guidelines, unless other state or local codes or regulations prescribe more stringent standards: • Cesspool (receiving raw sewage), 200 ft.

• Pit, privy, filter bed, 50 ft.

• Septic tank, tile sewer, foundation drain, 50 ft.

• Iron sewer with approved mechanical joints, 10 ft.

• Pump house floor drain, 2 ft.

• Property boundary, 5 ft.

• Outer boundary of any road, 20 ft.

• Landfill, garbage dump, 200 ft.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES • The immediate area surrounding the well should be free of debris, dirt, chemicals, fuels, or any other potential contamination source • Surface water should in no way interact with the well area • The well should be a safe distance from the natural flow of groundwater from under animal pens, pastures, and feeding areas • Any growth of weeds, trees, shrubs, or grasses with root systems within 10 feet of the well should be removed • Ensure the wellhead is not in a roadway or driveway; if it is within 24 inches of the roadway or driveway, it should be properly marked to avoid being hit by vehicles • The wellhead should be at an elevation above any surrounding contamination sources • The topography directly surrounding the wellhead should slope away from the casing to facilitate surface runoff away from the well.

All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered as part of the Dairy Group. Most dairy choices should be fat-free or low-fat.

Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group.

Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. Calciumfortified soy beverage is also part of the Dairy Group.

TIPS FOR MAKING WISE CHOICES IN THE DAIRY GROUP • Include fat-free or low-fat milk or calcium-fortified soy beverage to drink at meals.

• If you usually drink whole milk, switch gradually to fat-free milk, to lower saturated fat and calories. Try reduced fat (2%), then low-fat fruits and yogurt(1%), and finally fat-free (skim).

• If you drink cappuccinos or lattes — ask for them with fat-free (skim) milk.

• Add fat-free or low-fat milk instead of water to oatmeal and hot cereals.

• Use fat-free or low-fat milk when making condensed cream soups (such as cream of tomato).

• Have fat-free or low-fat yogurt as a snack.

• Make a dip for fruits or vegetables from yogurt.

• Make fruit-yogurt smoothies in the blender.

• Make chocolate or butterscotch pudding with fat-free or low-fat milk.

• Top cut-up fruit with flavored yogurt for a quick dessert.

• Top casseroles, soups, stews, or vegetables with shredded reduced-fat or low-fat cheese.

• Top a baked potato with fat-free or lowfat yogurt.

MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER BLUE RIBBON: THE BENEFITS OF 4-H ANIMAL PROJECTS Submitted by Barbara Moran, 4-H Animal Science Coordinator Some things that make the 4-H Youth Development and Future Farmers of America (FFA) programs unique from other youth organizations are the animal projects and the ability to show animals. If you’ve heard that 4-H is only for farm families, think again!

4-H reaches youth in cities, suburbs, and rural areas. If fact, 4-H is the largest youth organization in the world! Anyone ages 5-19 may participate in New York 4-H animal programs. So what educational benefit does a 4-H member gain from their experience showing animals?

The animal science projects are some of the oldest and greatest teaching tools that we have to teach youth life skills. Here is a list of some of these life skills that members gain: Sportsmanship There is only one Grand Champion animal; however, there are many winners within 4-H. Most 4-H’ers who show livestock for any period of time usually experience the extreme high feeling of an exceptional effort and the extreme disappointment of a project that didn’t turn out as well as was expected. Members learn to be humble when they win, and be gracious when they do not achieve the highest honors.

A favorite 4-H quote is “4-H is in the business of producing blue ribbon youth, not blue ribbon animals”.

Decision Making Making decisions is never easy at any point in our lives. Livestock projects require several key decisions be made: selection of project animals, selection of feeding method, care and management decisions, grooming, etc. Those with breeding livestock need to sometimes make the dreaded decision of when it’s time to sell an animal that is not performing well.

The more experience youth have with decision making, the better prepared for life they will be.

Attention to Details Most young people take care of major items in a 4-H livestock project, such as feeding; however, many times it’s the little things that make a difference. For example – keeping the water tanks and feed troughs clean, working on grooming and showmanship several months before

the show, keeping pens clean, and close observation for sickness and disease. Paying attention to details is beneficial in almost everything we do in life.

Pride & Sense of Accomplishment Obviously, the look on a youngster’s face after having been named the exhibitor of the Grand Champion animal is priceless. Similar to this would be the expression of a youngster who has worked very diligently with their animal, and they are awarded top showmanship honors. The 4-H members are proud of their animals and do their best to care for them.

4-H members participate in many educational opportunities where they learn ethics and proper care of their animals through events.

They participate in annual trainings, local fairs, and some exhibitors then progress on to district, state, and even national levels.

Are 4-H livestock projects successful?

You bet! We may occasionally hear some negative things about them, but these projects are still a great way to teach our young people about life.

Next time you are at a show, study the kids instead of the animals. You’ll notice that most classes have several winners, not just the one standing in first place. f

Complete the following checklist before initiating a conversation about safe driving with an older adult.

• Conduct a “ride-along” with the driver.

Join the driver as a passenger during several trips and note your thoughts and observations – both positive and negative. Try to ride with the older adult at different times to get a good sense of driving performance under a variety of road conditions.

• Consult those with special knowledge.

Discuss your concerns with a law enforcement officer, an elder-law attorney, or a geriatrician about any concerns and seek advice tailored to your specific situation before you have a conversation about safe driving.

Collect information about local options for a professional driving assessment and driver retraining courses.

• Understand the older adult’s transportation needs. Determine the purposes for the older adult’s driving.

Consider medical appointments, social obligations, religious commitments, shopping, and community activities.

Doing so will help you to appreciate how important driving is to the senior driver and assist you in finding transportation alternatives.

LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER’S May 4, 11, 18 Sunshine Adult Day Care partnered with the CCESC Caregiver Resource Center to offer the series Living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia, the Middle Stages for 14 attendees, in an effort to help them navigate through challenges the disease can pose for family and friends.

SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING May 11, 18 The Catskills Kitchen hosted the Beginning and Advanced Social Media Marketing workshops for budding and experienced entrepreneurs. Over 17 participants learned from SCORE, a volunteer business association which seeks to support small businesses.

HEALTHY, HUNGER FREE May 12, 15 Creating Healthy Schools & Communities of Sullivan and Orange Counties held two Wellness Policy Trainings for school administrators, staff members, and community partners who learned tips and ideas that would help them implement the Final Rule of the Healthy Hunger- Free Kids Act of 2010.

Cooke Elementary School participated by signing their pledge and placing their painted hand on one of the four banners that symbolized their commitment to the Environmental Awareness Pledge:

TWO SULLIVAN COUNTY YOUTH ADVANCE TO NYS COMMUNICATIONS INSTITUTE

NAT TOMPKINS

Sullivan County 4-H’ers Erin D. and Kaylin K. were among the seven youth selected from 94 speakers at District Public Presentations to represent New York State 4-H’s South East Region at the NYS Communications Institute held at Cornell University on June 3, 2017.

We are excited to announce that CCE Sullivan has added a new member to our team! Nat Tompkins has been hired as your new Agricultural Business Coordinator. Nat is a Sullivan County lifer; having been raised in Neversink and attended Tri-Valley Central School. Throughout high school, Nat was an active Future Farmers of America (FFA) member for all four years. It was during this time that Nat realized his passion for agriculture. After graduating in 2013, he decided it would be beneficial to continue his education by attending college at SUNY Cobleskill. In under three years, December 2016 Nat earned his bachelor of science degree in agricultural business management.

Nat is extremely excited to start working for Sullivan County’s farmers, and hopes to meet as many as possible through farm visits this summer!

The 4-H Public Presentations Program is designed to help develop confidence and skills in public speaking. Local volunteer evaluators were impressed by the poise and breadth of subject matter covered by the 115 local youth who took advantage of the county’s spring events. Of the 24 youth nominated to advance from these events, 14 were able to represent Sullivan County on April 29 at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie.

Each 4-H District in the state is invited to select seven youth to advance to the NYS Communications Institute. The South East 4-H District includes nine counties as well as the five boroughs of New York City, from Suffolk in the south up through the Hudson Valley to Dutchess, Sullivan, and Ulster.

The NYS Communications Institute was developed through a partnership of the NYS 4-H office and the Cornell University Department of Communications, with a goal of strengthening youth skills through workshops and increased peer evaluation opportunities. Erin will be presenting her Creative Communication “Jack’s Lament” while Kaylin will be sharing her Illustrated Talk on “Peeping Problems”.

TWO SULLIVAN COUNTY 4-H’ERS RECEIVE NATIONAL ROYALTY TITLES IN OHIO On April 29, 2017, Rebecca C. and Alexander U. (both members of the 4-H Working Together Rabbit Program and 4-H Puppy Pals Club), received National Royalty titles at the 2017 National Dutch Rabbit show held in Ohio for competing in the yearly Youth Knowledge Contest. Rebecca and Alexander completed an application, interview, written test, showmanship, and judged two classes of four Dutch rabbits for this competition. Both youth finished first in their age division. Rebecca was crowned the 2017 National Dutch Rabbit Club Duchess and Alexander was crowned the 2017 National Dutch Rabbit Club Prince. CCESC would like to congratulate these two youth on all their hard work and years of dedication to their rabbit project.

On May 20, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County’s Annual Plant Sale, orchestrated largely

by CCESC Master Gardener Volunteers, lived up to its reputation of consistently selling out early in the morning, wiping out most of the best selections within the first hour of opening!

The plant sale raised over $2,000 in support of the Master Gardener Volunteer and Community Horticulture programs!

Each year, Master Gardener Volunteers work to grow, donate, care for, organize, and sell plants of excellent quality for this fundraiser.

At the plant sale, guests can purchase annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, organic varieties, shrubs, trees, succulents, accessories, and more at some of the best prices in town. Area greenhouses and individuals donate many of the products, and everything else is grown on site and maintained in our greenhouse.

We thank everyone involved in making this event a success and look forward to giving this “two green thumbs up” again next year!

Not just anyone can call themselves a CCESC Master Gardener Volunteer!

MGVs apply and undergo an interview process, followed by a 60 hour training and 80 hour volunteer commitment thereafter, over two years! They educate the public, tend gardens, and serve on committees.
