Hello, dear friends: As usual, during this season of celebration and family, I find myself reflecting on the past 12 months. In addition to catching my breath because it flew by so fast, I am forever grateful for the friends and family I’ve made at CCE and Sullivan County. It never occurred to me that a “job” would turn into an intense respect and admiration for the passion and persistence of the folks who live here. Through rainy seasons, fires, changes in the way we all do business as the makeup of the county changes, Sullivan County is your home, and the public volunteerism and participation is proof in action of the community’s dedication to it. The team and I are looking forward to continuing to support that spirit of giving and participation with you in 2020.

For the 180 of our closest Extension family and friends, I so enjoyed spending a cold rainy day with you for CCE Sullivan’s 105th Annual Meeting & Family Reunion at the Villa Roma. As Board President Robert Kaplan noted in his introduction, it’s not everyday that we are able to bring our members, families, and volunteers together without ASKING you for SOMETHING! And having this opportunity to pay if forward to you all was good for the spirit and just one small gift of gratitude from us to you. Next year, we hope to DOUBLE the number of guests!

What else is in store for 2020? We’re working through our capital improvements; establishing a regular presence across program areas in Callicoon, Monticello, downtown Liberty, Fallsburg, Wurtsboro, and the entire Hudson Valley | Catskills region; continuing to deepen our partnerships with County government and youth and family serving organizations like the Boys & Girls Club, Sullivan Renaissance, the YMCA, ENGN, Safe Homes, Sullivan 180, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, My Brother’s Keeper, and others; cultivating a safe, inclusive community that values youth / adult partnerships through our work with Sullivan Allies Leading Together (SALT) and Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther’s office; and updating a new five year strategic plan for CCE Sullivan that includes work on issues related to climate change.

We’ll continue to reach more Sullivan County youth through the 4-H Club and Afterschool program models; increase food security for families through the expansion of the Sullivan Fresh Farmers’ Markets and a fresh fruit & vegetable prescription program; support agricultural economic development by opening wholesale markets to local producers and providing a food business incubator for innovation; help folks get and stay healthy through nutrition & physical activity workshops and series; put more money in consumer pockets by assisting them in adopting clean energy; and improve the quality of programs and services across the county through positive youth development, and diversity and inclusion opportunities for workers and community members-- youth and adults alike.

But before then, I’m going to encourage the CCE staff, and you, our members and family, to take a step back, relax, hug each other and be thankful through the month of December. If we don’t take the time to stop and enjoy each other and the community we live in, what’s the point of all the toil?

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT NYS GROWN & CERTIFIED Written by Ashley Tully, Ag Program Coordinator New York State Grown & Certified (NYSG&C) is a statewide, multi-faceted food certification program designed to strengthen consumer confidence in New York products, address food safety and product labeling, and assist New York farmers to take advantage of the growing demand for locally grown foods. The NYS Grown & Certified seal indicates that the farms your products come from have been inspected for safe food handling and environmental stewardship. The label lets you know your food was grown right, right here in New York State. This voluntary program is a cooperative effort among producers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, and the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets to meet consumer demand for high-quality food and agricultural products.

Producers can become NYS Grown & Certified by meeting three certification criteria.

1. Agricultural Products are grown and produced in New York State 2. Farms participate in a third-party food safety verification program, if applicable 3. Producers participate in an environmental management program Participation in NYSG&C requires completion of Tier 2 or higher Agricultural Environmental Management (AEM). AEM is a voluntary, confidential, incentivebased program that helps farmers protect important natural resources.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and must be received by CCEDC via email.

Grown & Certified participants are eligible to have $1000.00 in Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) audit costs reimbursed for two years.

There are currently funding opportunities available to those who would like to make capital improvements to meet and maintain the food safety requirements of the NYSG&C Program. In our region, Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County (CCEDC) is seeking Proposals for the NYS Grown & Certified Agricultural Producers Grant Program to provide grants of up to $50,000 to help NYS agricultural producers meet food safety standards and/or environmental certification necessary for participation in NYSG&C program. Grant funds cover 90% of project costs with producer matching with 10%. CCEDC invites agricultural producers from across the Mid-Hudson Valley (Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, & Westchester Counties) to submit an application for funding to assist them with the capital costs related to becoming NYS Grown & Certified. Costs may include, but not be limited to, the purchase of machinery or equipment and acquisition or

HOW TREES TALK TO EACH OTHER Submitted by Brenda Miller, Community Hort. Coordinator Imagine you’re walking through a forest. I’m guessing you’re thinking of a stand of trees, with rugged trunks and beautiful crowns. A forest is much more than what you see. Underground there is a world of infinite biological pathways that connect trees and allow them to communicate, and allow the forest to behave as a single organism.

My first “aha” moment was at the outhouse by our lake in British Columbia. Our dog had fallen into the pit. As we dug through the forest floor to rescue him, I became fascinated with the roots, and under that, white mycelium, and under that, red and yellow mineral horizons. I realized that this palette of roots and soil was really the foundation of the forest.

I wanted to know more, so I studied forestry. Scientists had just discovered in the laboratory that one pine seedling root could transmit carbon to another.

Trees in real forests might also be sharing information below ground.

I conducted experiments deep in the forest growing 80 replicates of paper birch and Douglas fir. I injected plastic bags covering the trees with tracer isotope (radioactive) carbon dioxide gases: carbon-14 into the bagged birch tree and carbon-13 into the shade cloth covered fir bag. I used two different isotopes, to see if two-way communication was going on between these species.

It would take one hour for the trees to absorb the CO2 through photosynthesis, turn it into sugars, send it down into their roots, and, hypothetically, shuttle it below ground to their neighbors. After the hour was up, using a Geiger counter, I confirmed that the birch had taken up the radioactive gas. Then I tested the fir tree and the Geiger counter

responded! It was the birch was saying, “Hey, can I help you?” And fir was saying, “Yeah, please send me some carbon because somebody threw a shade cloth over me.”

After checking all 80, the results were confirmed: The C-13 and C-14 showed that paper birch and Douglas fir were in a two-way conversation. In summer, birch was sending more carbon to fir, especially where the fir was shaded.

In winter experiments, we found the opposite. The fir was sending more carbon to the birch because the fir was still growing while the birch was leafless. The two species were interdependent.

And at that moment, I knew I had found something that would change the way we look at how trees interact in forests. It was solid evidence of a massive below ground communications network. Since then, I’ve conducted and published hundreds of experiments in the forest. My oldest experimental plantings are now over 30 years old.

The paper birch and Douglas fir were conversing in the language of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, water, allele chemicals, and hormones. Now we know that the below ground mutualistic symbiosis called mycorrhiza is involved. Mycorrhiza literally means “fungus root”.You can see their reproductive organs, the mushrooms, when you walk through the forest. They are just the tip of the iceberg. Coming out of those stems are fungal threads that form mycelium. Mycelium infects and colonizes the roots of all the trees and plants. Where fungal cells interact with root cells, there’s a trade of carbon for nutrients. The fungus gets those nutrients by growing through the soil and coating every soil particle. The web is so dense that there can be hundreds of kilometers of mycelium under a single footstep. It connects individuals of both the same and

different species, like birch and fir.

Like all networks, mycorrhizal networks have nodes and links. The biggest nodes are the hub trees or mother trees. Hub trees nurture younger trees growing in the understory. Using isotope tracers, we found that hub trees send their excess carbon through the mycorrhizal network to hundreds of trees and understory seedlings. We’ve associated this with a fourfold increase in seedling survival.

When hub trees are injured or dying, they send messages to the next generation. We’ve used isotope tracing to trace carbon moving from an injured hub tree into the mycorrhizal network and into neighboring seedlings, not only carbon but also defense signals.

And these two compounds have increased the resistance of those seedlings to future stresses.

Through back and forth conversations, the resilience of the whole community is increased. In recent experiments, we have found that by patch-cutting, retaining hub trees, and regenerating with a diversity of species, genes, and genotypes, forest mycorrhizal networks recover rapidly to environmental stresses.

We now know that forests aren’t just a bunch of trees competing with each other, they’re super cooperators.

HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (HEAP) Submitted by Sean Welsh, Community Energy Advisor The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) assists low-income people pay the cost of heating their homes. If you are eligible, you may receive one regular HEAP benefit per program year and could also be eligible for emergency HEAP benefits if you are in danger of running out of fuel or having your utility service shut off.

HEAP may be able to help if you heat your home with; Electricity, natural gas, oil, coal, propane, wood/wood pellets, kerosene, and corn.

If you are eligible, you may receive one regular HEAP benefit per program year to help you pay for heating you home. Eligibility and benefits are based on; income, household size, the primary heating source and the presence of a household member who is under the age of 6, age 60 or older or

permanently disabled.

Regular benefits for households that pay directly for heat based on actual usage are paid directly to the vendor that supplies the households primary source of heat.Your household may be eligible for a regular benefit if;You and your household members are United States Citizens or qualified aliens and your household’s gross monthly income is at or below the current income guides for your household size.

If you receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Temporary Assistance, or you receive Code A Supplemental Security Income (SSI living alone) you may be eligible for HEAP. 845-292-6180 for more information. If you are eligible for the HEAP benefit you are most likely eligible for other programs and services to help with energy use, and lower utility bills.

ADVANCED POWER STRIPS Submitted by Sean Welsh, Community Energy Advisor Save money and control your appliances without ever having to leave the house.

Do you own a lot of appliances that use electricity and want to save money on your electric bills? Maybe you work from home or have a large entertainment center in your house.

You probably already use power strips or surge protectors for many of your appliances – laptop, printer, computer monitor, television, video game system.

With a normal power strip, you have to get up to switch the power strip off to make sure every appliance is not using electricity. However, say you want to use your laptop without having your printer using electricity, but you have limited space in your home office to have them all plugged into the wall outlets. With a normal power strip, you can’t do this without switching which appliances are plugged into the power strip and which are plugged into the outlet. Thankfully, there is a product you can buy called an advanced power strip.

Advanced power strips are similar to your average power strips, but allow

you more freedom to control which appliances are on and which are off.

Not to mention, some come with a remote control, so you don’t have to get up to switch appliances on and off.

With remote controlled power strips you do have to remember to switch the power strip off. Otherwise, your appliances will stay on and continue to use electricity, but you don’t have to leave the couch or crawl on the floor to turn it off.

There are even advanced power strips that you can set to automatically turn off at a certain time, so if you fall asleep while watching Netflix, you don’t have to worry about your television or computer staying on all night and using up electricity. Another type of advanced power strip is the activity monitoring power strip, which senses activity levels in the room and turns off appliances when there isn’t any evidence of activity.

Other common advanced power strips are master-controlled and masterless power strips. With master controlled power strips, you choose one appliance to be the “master” and plug it into a specific spot on the power strip. When you turn off this master appliance, the

power strip cuts power to all of the other devices plugged into the strip.

A masterless power strip cuts power to any device that is turned off when plugged into the strip.

The one drawback is that advanced power strips can be more expensive to buy than regular power strips.

However, many utility companies offer discounts on energy efficient products when purchasing them through their online store. Keep healthier foods handy so kids avoid cookies, pastries, or candies between meals. Add seltzer water to a ½ cup of 100% fruit juice instead of offering soda.

Choose protein foods such as unsalted nuts and seeds, hummus or other bean dips, and hard-cooked (boiled) eggs for a healthy, easy snack. Store hard-cooked eggs in the refrigerator for up to 1 week for kids to enjoy any time.

Staff Spotlight 4-HSpotlight DUSTYN K. Each year at 4-H Achievement Night the Norman F. Gabriel Award is presented to a 4-H Member who represents a commitment to the principles behind the “Head, Heart, Hands and Health” of 4-H Youth Development. The 2019 winner is Dustyn Kratz. Throughout the years of his membership Dustyn has demonstrated consistent interest, initiative, hard work and followthrough in his learning experiences to regularly achieve excellence in project work for a range of subjects including animal science, shooting sports, environmental education, STEM, the arts and more. In addition to many achievements as a member, his outstanding record of leadership and service to CCESC and to the community at large has contributed to his recognition. We are fortunate that Dustyn has one more year of 4-H membership before going “Over the Rainbow.”

Agriculture Spotlight DIEHL HOMESTEAD FARM CCE Sullivan is working hard to support local businesses. One of our favorite ways to do this is by offering local products at programs, meetings, and events. Recently, we have begun serving milk from Diehl Homestead Farm.

Diehl Homestead Farm is a diverse farm located in Callicoon, NY. With a size of 230 acres, the farm currently produces milk, fresh eggs, maple products, honey, garlic, cut Christmas trees, local pottery, and more! As a 5th generation farm, the Diehl family has spent many years growing their business into the success it is today.

They currently milk about 60 cows and sell their products at various local businesses, stores, and farmers markets. CCE Sullivan is excited to support and promote a long-time local farm to all of our friends and partners!

We would like congratulate Bonnie on 20 years of service with CCE Sullivan! Bonnie is a Registered Nurse, and CCE Dependent Care Educator, coordinating the Caregiver Resource Center in partnership with Sullivan County Office for the Aging. Bonnie provides classes and resources to seniors, informal family caregivers, and the community and facilitates support groups. CRC partners with organizations including the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter and the NYS Dept. of Health Chronic Disease SelfManagement program.

Bonnie is board certified as a SUNY Geriatric Scholar, NYS DOH Tai Chi instructor for fall prevention, Peer Leader for Chronic Disease SelfManagement under Stanford Patient Education Research Center/NYS QTAC and as a Powerful Tools for Caregivers leader. Bonnie graduated from Charles S. Wilson School of Nursing and worked at Catskill Regional Medical Center for over 18 years as a pediatric nurse. She lives in Neversink with her husband Barry and two dogs, and is the proud grandma of Catherine Rose.

OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES OR CLINICAL TRIALS: CHOOSING TO PARTICIPATE Submitted by Bonnie Lewis, RN, Dependent Care Educator Observational studies observe people in normal settings while clinical trials are research studies performed in people that are aimed at evaluating a medical, surgical, or behavioral intervention.

In observational studies, researchers gather information, group volunteers according to broad characteristics, and compare changes over time. In clinical trials researchers find out if a new treatment, like a new drug or diet or medical device (for example, a pacemaker) is safe and effective in people. Often a clinical trial is used to learn if a new treatment is more effective and/or has less harmful side effects than the standard treatment. Other clinical trials test ways to find a disease early, sometimes before there are symptoms.

Still others test ways to prevent a health problem. A clinical trial may also look at how to make life better for people living with a life-threatening disease or a chronic health problem. Clinical trials sometimes study the role of caregivers or support groups.

The Four Phases of Clinical Trials These four phases may be used to test a treatment, find the appropriate dosage or look for side effects. If, after the first three phases, researchers find a drug or other intervention to be safe and effective, the FDA approves it for clinical use and continues to monitor its effects.

• A Phase I trial tests an experimental treatment on a small group of often healthy people (20 to 80) to judge its safety and side effects and to find the correct drug dosage.

• A Phase II trial uses more people (100 to 300). While the emphasis in Phase I is on safety, the emphasis in Phase II is on effectiveness, aiming to obtain preliminary data on whether the drug works in people who have a certain disease or condition.

• A Phase III trial gathers more information about safety and effectiveness, studying different populations and different dosages, using the drug in combination with other drugs (the number of subjects usually ranges from several hundred to about 3,000 people).

• A Phase IV trial for drugs or devices takes place after the FDA approves their use. A device or drug’s effectiveness and safety are monitored in large, diverse populations.

Sometimes, the side effects of a drug may not become clear until more people have taken it over a longer period of time.

Why Participate in a Clinical Trial?

Perhaps the treatment a person has tried for their diagnosis has not worked; there is no treatment for their health problem or a person (who is healthy) wants to help find ways to prevent a disease.

There are many ways you can get help to find a clinical trial.You can talk to your doctor or you can search www.

ClinicalTrials.gov.

Questions to Ask Before Participating in a Clinical Trial The following are some questions to ask the research team when thinking about a clinical trial.Write down any questions you might have and bring your list with you when you first meet with the research team.

• What treatment or tests will I have? Will they hurt?

• What are the chances I will get the experimental treatment?

• What are the possible risks, side effects, and benefits of the study treatment compared to my current treatment?

• How will I know if the treatment is working?

• How will you protect my health while I am in the study?

• What happens if my health problem

gets worse during the study?

• How will the study affect my everyday life?

• How long will the clinical trial last?

• Where will the study take place? Will I have to stay in the hospital?

• Will you provide a way for me to get to the study site if I need it?

• Will being in the study cost me anything? If so, will I be reimbursed?

Will my insurance cover my costs?

• Can I take my regular medicines while in the trial?

• Who will be in charge of my care while I am in the study? Will I be able to see my own doctor?

• Will you follow up on my health after the end of the study?

• Will you tell me the results of the study?

• Whom do I call if I have more questions?

• How will you keep my doctor informed about my participation in the trial?

• Does the study compare standard and experimental treatments?

• If I withdraw, will this affect my normal care?

• What are the chances that I will receive a placebo?

• What steps ensure my privacy?

ANNUAL CAREGIVER CELEBRATION The Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County Caregiver Resource Center (CRC) recognized the efforts of our area family caregivers by hosting a celebration at YiaSou Café in Liberty on November 5, in honor of National Caregiver Recognition month.

Karen Holden, Training and QI Coordinator at Sullivan County Public Health Services Department, and Office for the Aging Director Lise-Anne Deoul, were both present to meet the caregivers and share the services that may be beneficial to them and their care receivers. The CRC was pleased to host 13 caregivers to dessert and coffee while Karen and Lise-Anne presented.

The theme for 2019 National Family Caregivers Month is #BeCareCurious!

Caregivers want their loved ones to have the best care possible; at the doctor’s office, at the hospital, and at home. The Caregiver Action network encourages family caregivers to ask questions, explore options and share in the care decisions that affect the health and well-being of their loved ones. The Caregiver Resource Center is a co-partnered program between Cornell Cooperative Extension and Office for the Aging of Sullivan County and is supported by a grant from the NYS Office for the Aging’s Caregiver Program.
