CCE Sullivan Board President On behalf of the CCE Sullivan Board of Directors, happy new year! I’m pleased to welcome new board members Chris Ng, Juanita Sarmiento, and Gary Silver, and Program Advisory Committee members Roberta Chambers, Cynthia HernandezGonzalez, and Deborah Worden. The world saw many changes in 2020, and having fresh perspectives on our board and committees is welcome as we continue to tackle our rapidly changing community and environment. The fact of the matter is, as a 106 year old institution, CCE Sullivan needs to be intentional about cultivating a board of directors and program advisory committee that are reflective of the community we serve. Growing and evolving is never easy or a straight line, but it is required of us if we are to fulfill our role in promoting “any study, to any person”. We look forward to working with all of you to remain relevant, and to continue our education, outreach, and Extension mission because, together, we are better.

We wanted to focus on the experience and resilience of all of YOU! So you’ll notice the “required” reporting snippets, but it is our hope, that the faces and testimonial snapshots you see bring you comfort and inspiration. For me, it is a reminder that it only takes a little, from many, to make a big and meaningful impact. I hope you enjoy this Extension Connection issue as much as I do. “I am of Finnish descent and Finns use a word that exemplifies resilience to me. Sisu in Finnish means ‘strength and perseverance in a task that for some may seem crazy to undertake, almost hopeless.’

For some, getting through this pandemic and improving the health of our county may feel hopeless at times, but I’m confident that with ‘sisu’ spirit we can and will get to a better, healthier future.”

This year was difficult as a parent and 4-H leader.

Although we lost a lot as groups and individuals, my kids learned to be more independent and gained a better work ethic.

“This year was different. We didn’t get to meet as a club very much but when we met, it was fun! We couldn’t have a real fair, but I was able to put my gnome in the virtual fair and also my chocolate zucchini bread.

I got blue ribbons for both. I had to do my public presentation on Zoom for the judges, but it went great and they were excited to learn about the Delmarva fox squirrel. It was an ok year! I wish COVID didn’t happen!”

“This year has been very different than other years. I was not able to participate in as many things due to COVID 19 but I tried to do as many things as possible. I went to Zoom meetings for the Intergenerational Textile Group. I made masks for children to wear. I did a Zoom public presentation on how to make pickles. Hopefully next year will be a better year for everyone.”

My application was approved within a day or two, and by the week’s end I had a competent state-approved energy expert figuring out all the ways my home could do better on saving energy (and money)! As a person on a limited income, I received attic insulation at no cost - an otherwise expensive project I wouldn’t have been able to pay for myself. The project took just two days, and even though it was already springtime, you could feel the difference right away!

I did the Assisted Home Energy Performance with ENERGY STAR® a few years ago when my boiler needed to be replaced, and I am delighted. I received 5 thousand dollars* towards a new one, and financed the rest at a low interest rate. This allowed me to get a very fuel-efficient boiler that saves both money on fuel and lessens my carbon footprint!”

With Coronavirus you can’t go out too many places, and whatever.

Everybody stays home, because they are scared of the epidemic. It’s very important cause we don’t have to go out there to ShopRite or Walmart to make sure that we ain’t gonna get the Coronavirus. We stay home, and when you get food delivered to us, it’s very convenient, it’s good, it makes us happy.”

“Brey’s Egg Farm is part of the New York Grown and Certified Program, which proved vital during this year’s volatile season. At the beginning of the pandemic in March, we lost about 80% of our markets in NYC, and we had to find alternative markets. New York State provided funding to purchase staple foods produced here in our state, helping get our eggs into the hands of customers who needed them. We’ve been donating to food banks and the Sullivan Fresh Community Cupboard, and it feels great to be able to give back to the local community.”

“The Town of Thompson has had the pleasure of working with CCE to establish an Employee Wellness Program and Committee.

Monthly nutrition and health tips are found in employee break rooms; some workstations have desktop standing desks; there is an employee bike rack and a healthy cart with cookbooks, resistance bands, jump rope, pedometers, and stress balls. The Town has held on-site workshops for chair yoga, meditation, stress management, and cardiac screenings. A significant contribution from the Creating Healthy Communities Program was the 90 trail markers and directional signs provided to mark the hiking trails at the Town of Thompson Park.”
