Hello, friends!

They say it’s spring but I’m always suspicious until June. For what it’s worth, I hope you’ve been able to get outside to face the sun at least once since we’ve seen a week or two above freezing daytime temps.

Things are certainly heating up at Extension in preparation for warmer weather. The Master Gardener Volunteers planted seedlings for the Annual Plant Sale, to be held June 1st. The Catskills Kitchen begins its eight session entrepreneurship series, which opens up state and county sponsored financing for budding food businesses. Program Advisory Committee member and Sullivan Renaissance Horticulture Program Manager Diana Weiner is on deck to work with 4-H clubs on plant-based Youth Fair entries. Shooting Sports youth and volunteers are cultivating trout fry in anticipation of restocking local waterways. Sullivan County seniors are shaking off the cold in a Tai Chi for Fall Prevention series with the Caregiver Resource Center. And the finishing touches are being started on the Sullivan Fresh Mobile Farmers’ Market on the Move van, with a pilot route to begin in July.

If you haven’t ventured down to southern Orange County to check out the Hudson Valley Catskills Welcome Center and Taste NY shop at the Woodbury Commons, you might think about taking a ride towards the end of the month. They have about 10 degrees on us up here in Sullivan and carry an array of maple, honey, granola, fiber, wood, bath & body, and other products crafted by your friends and neighbors in the Hudson Valley Catskills region.

We’re also opening a new freestanding I Love NY kiosk in April, along with an interactive I Love NY sculpture experience outside the Welcome Center. On Tuesdays, which is “Locals Day” at the Commons, we’ll host a diverse array of pop up markets and tastings to highlight culinary delights from across the region. Through these activities, we hope to drive some small segment of the 14 million international travelers who pass through the Woodbury Commons, out into our rural landscape to experience what the Sullivan Catskills and surrounding counties have to offer in agricultural products, natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and entertainment.

Also, with just four months left until our deadline, the admin, ag, and facilities departments are working diligently on interior capital improvements to ensure a safe, accessible educational space for all Sullivan County residents and guests.

With such rapid program, staff, and capital projects growth, the CCE team is always looking at new ways to organize ourselves to make sure we continue to be responsive to local needs and inquiries. Please be patient with us as we work through these growth and change stages.While we all prefer to talk to a human being when we call a place of business, please don’t hesitate to leave a voicemail if we don’t get to the phone right away, or shoot an email to the general sullivan@cornell.edu email box. If you don’t catch us on the phone right away, it’s the surest way to make sure we know you need something so we can get back to you.

FACTORS THAT AFFECT LIQUID SANITIZER WASH EFFECTIVENESS Submitted by Bridget Kackos, Program Assistant Water sources should be potable and free from debris, odor, and microorganisms. Water hardness can affect the concentration of sanitizers.

Water hardness is the amount of minerals within the water. Very soft is less than 60 ppm. Moderately hard is 61-120 ppm. Hard is 121-180 ppm. Very hard is more than 180 ppm. The higher the water hardness concentration, the less effective the sanitizer is on food produce, as mineral deposits can trap bacteria or bind to the active ingredients that cause bacteria to die. For example, in Ames, Iowa, the water supply ranges from 150-165 ppm, while in Des Moines, Iowa, it ranges from 100-135 ppm. Using this example, Des Moines could use less sanitizer wash to achieve the same sanitizer concentration as Ames.

Soil presence reduces the effectiveness of all types of liquid sanitizers. Soil binds to the active ingredients within the sanitizer wash and results in a lower concentration of active ingredients. Removal of as much soil as possible prior to rinsing produce with a sanitizer will maximize the sanitizer’s effect.

Water temperature can affect the safety and effectiveness of sanitizer.

High temperatures can result in sanitizer vaporization, producing a toxic gas that could be dangerous to human health. Low temperatures can reduce the efficacy in some types of sanitizer, as well as reduce the activity of their active ingredients.

It is important to be aware of the appropriate temperature for a specific sanitizer.

The pH of the water and product can affect a sanitizer’s effectiveness. pH is a measure of the acidity of a Page 4

concentration and is observed on a scale of 1-14. A pH less than seven is acidic, and a pH greater than seven is basic. Some sanitizers work best in acidic or neutral pH conditions, while others are not affected by pH. For those affected, water testing is important to ensure the correct type of sanitizing agent is selected for water conditions to achieve maximum impact and value.

Contact time on product can significantly affect the efficacy of the sanitizer in removing diseasecausing microorganisms. It is important to read the manufacturer’s instructions on how long and under what conditions contact of the fruits or vegetables with the sanitizer solution is most effective. Temperature and pH affect the rate at which sanitizers can kill microorganisms on the surface. For example, warmer water temperatures, along with a neutral pH in the presence of low organic matter (soil), can reduce contact time for chlorine bleach. Food safety of fruits and vegetables begins with growers following Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to reduce the risk of foodborne illness. After harvest, growers should incorporate Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) into their protocols, including sanitation principles. For additional guidance on good sanitation practices during production, harvesting, and packaging, search online for “PM 1974C, On-farm Food Safety: Cleaning and Sanitizing Guide”, which provides an overview of cleaning and sanitizing food contact surfaces and products. This publication provides additional information about the best postharvest sanitizing practices for fresh fruits and vegetables. It includes a comparison chart of five commonly used liquid sanitizers, with information on mechanisms for killing pathogenic bacteria, testing methods,

recommended concentrations, positive and negative considerations, and product examples.

Fruit and vegetable surfaces affect the ability of sanitizers to penetrate the entire surface. Produce surfaces with crevices and punctures, such as cantaloupe and leafy greens, lower the likelihood that sanitizers will cover all areas. Produce items that are easily bruised or damaged, such as apples and tomatoes, have increased likelihood to harbor microorganisms in damaged areas, thus reducing the likelihood for sanitizer to be effective.

Other factors for consideration include the concentration appropriate to the sanitizer agent of the sanitizer used and mixing multiple sanitizers together. Test strips should be used to ensure the approved concentration of the sanitizer is being prepared and maintained during usage. Sanitizers should not be mixed unless directions from the manufacturers indicate that it is safe.

YOU & YOUR FOREST SERIES: TAXES Submitted by Melinda Meddaugh, Ag & Food Systems Issue Leader Protecting Your Assets Assets are the economic resources of a business that are expected to be of benefit in the future. Cash, office supplies, merchandise, furniture, land, and buildings are examples.

In the case of forest property, assets can include trees and other plants, soil, streams, bodies of water, road systems, trail systems, and wildlife habitat. Protecting one’s forest assets is no different than protecting any other business property. The owner of a bed & breakfast, for example, stays in business by controlling costs, maintaining the physical assets, and generating income. The following topics are intended to introduce the forest landowner to some of the cost control and income strategies common to forestland ownership.

Taxes Property taxes, in many cases, can be the single highest cost associated with owning forest property. Your tax bill amount is based upon a tax rate which is applied against an assessed value of your property. The higher the tax rate, the higher your tax bill.

Also, the higher the assessed value of your property, the higher your tax bill. The tax rate is fixed, based upon local budgetary needs, and is nonnegotiable. The assessed value of your property, however, is determined by the town’s assessor, and should be roughly the same value per acre as similar property in the town.

However, forest properties are quite diverse, which is why assessed value can get messy. A forest that has been recently harvested does not have the same value as a forest in need of a harvest. Forested parcels will

have differing amounts of public road frontage and interior road development. Bodies of water and wetlands can influence the value of a forest parcel. All of these features should be considered when reviewing the assessed value of your forest property.

Once a year, landowners have an opportunity to grieve the assessed value of their property. Towns will set a date - sometime in the spring - in which property owners can request a review of their assessed values in front of the Board of Assessment Review.

A request to reduce the assessed value of a property can be based upon differences in the assessed value of your property and similar properties in the town (unequal assessment); or it can be based upon an assessed value substantially higher than what forest properties sell for (excessive assessment).

Other assessment challenges can be raised based upon “unlawful assessment” and “misclassification,” however, one should consult a lawyer on these. There is no guarantee that the Board will approve an assessment challenge. If they don’t, the property owner will still have a chance to make his or her case in a court of law – and should consider consulting a lawyer.

Legal advice should be sought from a lawyer who has experience in forest property cases. Depending on how far one intends to pursue a change in his or her assessment, it may be necessary to hire a professional appraiser to determine property value which in addition, may require hiring a forester to perform a complete timber cruise of the property. Court challenges can be extremely costly. The costs must be weighed against potential savings before going to court.

Forest Tax Law It may be possible to get a reduction in your tax bill by enrolling forestland into the Real Property Tax Law, Section 480-a. To qualify, forest property must be at least 50 acres in size, and the owner must also have a forest management plan professionally prepared by a qualified forester. Property enrolled in the 480-a program can save up to 80% on the property taxes. However, there are some costs. A severance tax of 6% must be paid to the county for all timber harvested from the property, and once enrolled, the landowner is committed to stay in the plan for 10 full years or else pay penalties.

Most forest properties will not see an 80% reduction in taxes, therefore, it’s a good idea to work through the formulas that are in the body of the Real Property Tax Law 480-a first, with your financial advisor. Most foresters are familiar with the Real Property Tax Law and would be able to assist in researching the potential benefits of enrolling forest property into the program.

Conservation Easements A conservation easement involves the sale of some of a property owner’s rights to another party.

Conservation easements had their beginning as a creative alternative to the outright purchase of property for the sake of protecting rare, critical, or unique habitat. For example, wetland areas important for waterfowl breeding and migration have been protected by conservation easements.

The conservation easement, in theory, allows property to stay in private ownership, while at the same time providing the resource protection of public ownership (perhaps even more protection since public use of the area can be further controlled).

Also, even though the landowner still retains rights to the property, they will likely see a reduction in land taxes. The public in return, is assured of the resource protection at a fraction of the cost of an outright purchase. The ownership rights sold

in a conservation easement can vary from the sale of development rights to the sale of recreational rights.

Compensation for the rights sold can be anything from a lump sum payment, to a sharing of taxes, or both.

The potential combinations of rights sold and compensation are endless.

It’s important for a landowner to understand that once an ownership right has been sold, some of the rights retained may still be compromised. The sale of recreation rights, for example, may limit timber harvesting during hunting seasons, or the use of trails during snowmobile season. A landowner’s use of his or her non-easement land adjoining the easement may even be impacted, because that landowner does not have the right to negatively impact the rights that have been sold. Since conservation easements can last into perpetuity, all potential conflicts can almost be impossible to anticipate.

TOP 10 ENERGY SAVING TIPS TO CELEBRATE EARTH DAY Submitted by Sean Welsh, Community Energy Advisor Written by Camille Marcotte, Cornell Cooperative Extension Dutchess County Resource Educator This Earth Day, make your home more comfortable and help out the planet by taking some of these steps to cut down on your energy use, whether you own or rent. If renting, be sure to get approval from your landlord or property manager before taking any of these steps.

1. Change your light bulbs to ENERGY STAR LED (light emitting diode) or CFL bulbs (compact fluorescent light bulbs), which are more energy efficient. LEDs are the most energy efficient and can last up to 15 years.

CFLs can last about 5 years and are cheaper to purchase than LED bulbs.

Check out your utility company’s online store to buy CFL or LED light bulbs for reduced prices.

2. Weatherstrip or rope caulk drafty windows. This is something even renters can do, as there are nonpermanent and easy-to-remove options available for sealing window gaps.

3. Wash only full loads of laundry and wash in cold water whenever possible. When washing in warm or hot water, most of the energy you use goes towards heating the water.

By reducing the number of loads washed, especially in hot or warm water, you can save money and energy.

4. Regularly service your heating system (yearly for oil, about every two years for natural gas). Replace filters on warm air systems when needed.

5. Install gaskets and foam insulation on wall outlets and light plates.

Gaskets are inserted into outlets to Page 8

block cold air from coming in from outside walls. Foam insulation are pieces that are installed behind light plates and outlets to help provide insulation on outside walls.

6. Install plastic sheeting on windows.

This is an option for renters as the plastic sheeting is not permanent and easy-to-remove. You can buy plastic sheeting in different sizes depending on your windows.

7. Insulate hot water pipes and electric water heaters. You can purchase foam insulation for the hot water pipes in different sizes at most hardware stores. Insulating your hot water pipes will allow the water to stay warmer longer as it travels to your tap.

8. Install shower and faucet aerators.

Aerators add air to the water flowing out of your faucets and showerheads.

This reduces the amount of water flowing from the showerheads and faucets, while still keeping the same water pressure.

9. Unplug a second refrigerator whenever possible, if you have one. Out of all your appliances, your refrigerator typically uses the most energy. Sometimes people buy a newer, more energy efficient refrigerator to lower their energy bills, and place their old one in the basement or garage. Having two refrigerators running can cause your energy bills to increase.

10. Get a home energy assessment.

This assessment takes a whole-house look to improve your home’s comfort, safety, and energy efficiency. Most New York residents are eligible for a free or reduced-cost home energy assessment. There are also lowinterest loans and other incentives to assist you in paying for energy retrofits and upgrades.

There is a growing concern about food loss and waste throughout the United States. Consider that about 90 billion pounds of edible food goes uneaten each year. This costs most people about $370 each year.

As the world population continues to grow, there is a greater need to set goals and develop initiatives to reduce the amount of food wasted.

Less food loss and waste can help save money, improve food access, and protect natural resources. The impacts of food loss and waste include: • Food waste is the single largest component going into municipal landfills.

• Wholesome food is sent to landfills instead of feeding people in need.

• Producing, processing, transporting, preparing, storing, and disposing of discarded food uses inputs such as land, water, labor, and energy that could be available for other purposes.

What can you do?

Being mindful about planning, purchasing, protecting, preserving, storing, re-purposing, donating and recycling food can help you save money and reduce the amount of food thrown away.

It’s open to all youth and you can contact Kaitlyn to learn more about it. The Intergenerational Textile Program meets the third Friday of every month at 6:00pm and continues to grow! It’s free for youth and adults and you can contact Marylin to learn more about that.

4-H PUBLIC PRESENTATIONS March 2 Over 95 youth participated in the annual 4-H Public Presentations event. With the help of more than 20 volunteers, youth hone their speaking and presentation skills and have a chance to qualify for district/regional public presentations activities, and the state level Communications Institute at Cornell University. Thank you to all the volunteers who made the day possible!

ENERGY EFFICIENCY March 2 The Community Energy Engagement Program (CEEP) provided information and outreach to about 50 families. The program assists residents, small commercial properties and businesses, and nonprofits explore the best ways to improve energy efficiency in their homes and workspaces, then facilitates participation in NYSERDA grant and financing programs to make it real!

SOUL FOOD CAFE March 4 Bonnie Lewis, the dependent care educator with CCE’s Caregiver Resource Center spent this Monday evening at the Soul Food Café, held in the Liberty Methodist Church, providing Extension Outreach to families and individuals who gather for social support, supper, and friendship.

AARP TAX AIDE PROGRAM March 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 Ed Wolfe and his superhero cohort of AARP volunteers continue to provide free tax preparation for Sullivan County residents. Each year, these folks assist more than 300 individuals with this annual task.

EMPIRE AFTERSCHOOL March 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 Over 12 days, 4 CCE staff provided afterschool program activities in the Monticello and Fallsburg Central School Districts for over 50 students. These programs run in 6 session series, result in a project product that can be entered into the Sullivan County Youth Fair, and are absolutely FREE to participating students.

March 7, 14, 21, 28 For years, community members have been attending yoga classes on Thursdays at the Extension Education Center. While the program is no longer enrolling participants, this private partnership helps offset energy costs, and we are so glad they continue to work with us to provide these wellness activities.

DOG CLASSES March 8 For the second year in a row, the Youth Dog Achievement Program was a success! After a one-off experiment last year, the Youth Animal Science Department will be offering this once per month series for young people interested in learning about dog handling.

4-H YOUTH CLUBS March 9, 10, 17, 19, 23, 30 A variety of 4-H clubs meet at the Extension Education Center each month. Ranging from general interest clubs, to horse, to poultry, to natural resources, there may be club meeting here for a young person you know! ALLIANCE FOR A HEALTHIER GENERATION March 15 CCE’s Healthy Schools program partnered with Liberty Central School District to offer the Alliance for a Healthier Generation training. The training provides tools and ideas for providing opportunities for movement during the school day, which is proven to improve behaviors and grades.

UNDERSTANDING ALZHEIMER’S

Just upstairs, the Poultry Double Yolker workshop gave about 20 youth an opportunity to learn about chickens. Look for upcoming workshops, clinics, and trips for youth!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 26 Sean Welsh, CCE’s energy educator, provided Extension program staff from around the region a professional development opportunity in Orange County, ensuring CCE folks from 7 counties know how to connect their constituents to the Community Energy Engagement Program.

March 18 The Caregiver Resource Center offered the Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia at Action Toward Independence (ATI).

A partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association of the Hudson Valley called CARES, makes these free programs possible.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT March 20 The Caregiver Resource Center hosted its monthly support group at CCE, right across the hall from the 2019 4-H Livestock and Product Auction meeting. Check in with Bonnie about support groups, and Barb to learn about auction.

INSTAGRAM FOR SMARTIES March 27 Administrator and Diversity Officer Nicole Slevin offered an inservice for CCE staff on Instagram Basics. With social media being more important than ever to distribute information and recruit participation, Extension programs across the region are building their capacity to use these mediums, bringing Extension programming into the 21st century.

2019’s first Sullivan County Youth Fair Superintendent’s meeting brought together CCE’s youth development staff and Youth Fair volunteers to review fair participation guidelines, deadlines, and program needs.

Two more meetings will bring us to the 139th Grahamsville Little World’s Fair, where CCE hosts the Sullivan County Youth Fair for more than 50 years!

YOUTH FAIR SUPERINTENDENTS March 29 CCE Sullivan attended the Sullivan Renaissance Steering Committee meeting at the CVI Building to learn community updates and initiatives underway from our partners.

PURCHASING & LEASING FARMLAND CLASS March 30 CCE’s Ag team offered a Purchasing and Renting Farmland workshop at the Extension Education Center. This program provided information to current and aspiring farmers on how to access land in Sullivan County for the purposes of expanding or developing agricultural enterprises, and to preserve farmland as a major resource and attraction in our rural county.

FARM ARTS COLLECTIVE Written by Tannis Kowalchuk In January 2019, I launched Farm Arts Collective, a new not-for-profit cultural organization based on my farm, Willow Wisp Organic Farm, in Damascus, PA. I am developing our Agri-Cultural collective with one of my favorite people, Sue Currier, the former executive director of Delaware Highlands Conservancy. Both Sue and I; along with an amazing board made up of Heather Jacksy, Christine Ahern, Adrianne Picciano, Melissa Sandor, and advisors Greg Swartz (farmer), Elaine Matthews (climate scientist), and Jim Lahey (baker-chef); are committed to local community building through four main pillars of activity: farming, art, food, and ecology.

Through workshops, performances, meals, and special events, our mission is to provide nourishment of mind, body, and spirit, thus deepening our connection to place and each other.

In our inaugural year, here are some of our programs: Farm Days-- held in the Farm Arts Collective greenhouse on Willow Wisp Farm, self-taught experts and professionals lead monthly workshops designed to bring community members together to share skills,

expand collective knowledge and engage in workshops that serve farmers, homesteaders, cooks, and gardeners. Our first workshop is New Farmers Roundtable and we invite all farmers in our area to participate.

Performance Creation Workshops and Madrigal Choir—weekly gatherings for performance–making are open to all community members to build skills in stilt- walking, singing, acting, writing, drumming, propbuilding, and design. The goal is to build a community ensemble adept at creating thought-provoking theatre performances about important ecological and social issues of the day .

Opening Ceremony of Farm Arts Collective will take place on June 2nd at our home on Willow Wisp Organic Farm. The event will include an opening prayer and blessing from Chief Gentlemoon of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, followed by a farm tour led by Willow Wisp Farmer Greg Swartz, a presentation of TREES by Farm Arts Collective, music, refreshments, and socializing.

Organic Farm at 6 PM. Stone Soup Cooking Show—Farm Arts Collective is developing a new cooking performance that centers on food, where it comes from, and the skills and benefits of cooking fresh, whole foods. Created and performed by Jess Beveridge and Tannis Kowalchuk, with support from CCE, the performance integrates the old folk tale of Stone Soup to address hunger, community action, and food heritage. It also offers some practical cooking empowerment, inviting an all-ages audience on a journey that moves from how food is grown, the history of cooking, family recipes, nutrition, a recipe travelogue.

Stone Soup addresses a cultural need to get people interested and comfortable with the idea of cooking for themselves.

CCE Sullivan Spotlights

Farm Spotlight ALPACAS IN HARMONY Patty Ludwig discovered her love for alpacas in 2007 after doing some research for a friend. She purchased two pregnant alpacas and soon her herd had grown to 15 alpacas. In 2012, Patty purchased a farm and began Alpacas in Harmony. The farm is made up of 12 acres of mostly pasture land in Cochecton, NY. Now, Patty has 38 alpacas that produce anywhere from 200-300lbs of fiber each year that is processed into yarn, roving, and batts used to make other alpaca products.

Alpaca fiber is non-allergenic, lightweight, and comes in 22 natural colors. The farm is home to horses, a mini pony, and a mini donkey.

Caring for and being around her animals are Patty’s favorite parts of farming. She loves how gentle natured alpacas are and that they are small enough for almost anyone to handle.

Patty takes pride in alpacas being considered “green animals” since they are easy on the land and their manure is extremely fertile. When visitors come to the farm, they are surprised at how closely they can experience the animals. Visitors get to feed baby carrots to the alpacas.

Staff Spotlight

Partner Spotlight AMANDA LANGSEDER Amanda Langseder, director of community health of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System, and CCE Program Advisory Committee member, is one of the most committed people when it comes to turning Sullivan County into a healthier place. Her endless energy and motivation are beyond contagious. She brought a program called ”Warrior Kids” to Sullivan schools teaching kids the formula for living a healthy life.

More than 750 students have graduated from the program focusing on the importance of eating fruits and vegetables, limiting screen time, increasing daily physical activities, and reducing consumption of sugary drinks. Everything Amanda touches has the goal of improving lives and making people healthier. Whether she’s working on Warrior Kids, leading a Worksite Wellness Summit, or helping with healthy food drives, she is an individual with the power of a collective, and Sullivan County is lucky to have her.

MELINDA MEDDAUGH Melinda has been promoted to Agriculture & Food Systems Issue Leader!

In 2018, Melinda presented as a panel speaker at the state-wide Cornell Cooperative Extension Ag, Food, & Environmental In-Service, and on a Farm to School panel at Monticello School District.

Melinda was interviewed for a NYS “Public Health Live” webcast on farmers’ markets in Sullivan County.

In 2019, she presented to market managers across the state at the NYS Farmers’ Market Managers Conference on building collaboration among farmers’ markets.

Melinda is responsible for bringing almost $1 million in grant money into Sullivan County in 2018.

She is an elected council member for the Town of Thompson and lives in Rock Hill with her husband Josh.

CCE Sullivan Spotlights

4-H Spotlight KAYDENCE E. Youth Leader Kaydence E. of the Youngsville Busy Beavers was surprised with special recognition at the County 4-H Public Presentations event on March 2. In celebration of her contributions to Sullivan County’s public speaking program, she was awarded a specially designed t-shirt announcing: “I Picked the Winning Bessie Bingo Number 2018.” It was Kaydence’s lucky guess that #200 would be the very spot that dairy cow Bessie would mark as winner during the popular Youth Fair fundraiser.

4-H staff had invested in the winning ticket and proceeds were donated to 4-H to purchase six new ‘state of the art’ easels for the 4-H Public Presentations Program. In addition to her club work, Kaydence has been a valued teen leader for the County Program in providing service during Youth Fair and at Public Presentations.

THE BENEFITS OF 4-H YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Submitted by Barbara Moran, 4-H Animal Science Coordinator Written by Ginger Cunningham, N.C. Cooperative Extension 4-H Extension Agent A common question asked by parents and community leaders stems from the inquiry of how will youth benefit from affiliation with or participation in an organization such as 4-H. That’s an understandable disquisition – parents and concerned individuals want to know how their children will benefit from spending their time and efforts with any one organization.

Families are extremely busy and have a lot to do in a sparse amount of free time each day. That free time is worth quite a bit; they need to make it meaningful and productive from a standpoint of contributing to the overall well-being of their child. As a community, we all want our young people to have a nurturing and fulfilling component to their lives that

enables them to grow, prosper, and succeed.

To better speak of the specifics of the benefits of the 4-H program, a longitudinal study accessing over 7,000 youth from an array of diverse backgrounds was performed at Tufts University. Researchers partnered with faculty at land-grant universities to study how participation in 4-H allows youth to succeed in academic and life experiences through positive adult mentoring, structured learning, and consistent encouragement.

Over the course of the study that began in 2002, research revealed that, in comparison with other youth, young people in 4-H: • Experience greater educational

achievements • Have greater motivation and aspirations for future education • Are more civically active • Are more than 3.3 times more likely to contribute to their communities • Have significantly lower drug, cigarette, and alcohol use • Are 2.3 times more likely to exercise and be physically active • Report better grades and higher levels of academic competence • Are nearly 2 times more likely to go to college It is hoped that concerned individuals will acknowledge the benefits of 4-H and can, without reservation, engage their children and their own volunteer efforts within the local 4-H community.
