Founded in 1979 by Willy Tsao, and now directed by Yuri Ng, CCDC has presented more than 200 original works by leading choreographers, and pioneered in Asia to reimagine the possibilities of modern dance through innovative collaborations.

Representing Hong Kong in more than 270 overseas performances at the world’s foremost dance stages and festivals, CCDC is regarded as ‘the artistic soul of contemporary Hong Kong’.

It has served to promote dance video in China and in Asia, as well as to provide a platform for artists and audience alike to share the perspectives and explore the unlimited possibilities of the art form through talks and workshops. The Festival brings the excitement of dance video worldwide through screenings, and enhances cultural exchange through invitations of renowned dance video artists to the Festival, made possible by the support of various national and international partners. The contribution of Jumping Frames was recognised by receiving the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards Arts Promotion Awards and Hong Kong Dance Alliance Dance Awards in 2014.

In recent years, the encounter of dance and moving images spark bountiful imaginations. Nevertheless, hitting hard by the coronavirus outbreak, followed by mandatory closure of the theatres, fueled a controversy over the notion of dance on screen and the process of digitalizing dance. At the same time, forcing CCDC and Jumping Frame to rethink: What is the relationship between dance and film?

How should the directors and the choreographers communicate? How should an art work converse with the society? How to provide more diverse platform for exchange of ideas? With growing interest of local dance artists in moving images and trying to shoot their own work, how far can they go? What can dance artists learn from filmmakers? When can dancers edit their own videos with confidence? With these questions in mind, this year, we have invited Elysa Wendi, who has been our Guest Curator for years, to become Jumping Frames’s Chief Curator, engaging dialogues among local and international artists and art loving friends of various disciplines under the theme “Eyes to Eyes”.

I met Elysa in 2015 during the New Works Forum: Screendance, co-presented

by West Kowloon Cultural District and CCDC. I am deeply inspired by her global perspective and passion in performing arts. We both believe that interpersonal connections, art creations and social development all required face-to-face communication, seeing eyes to eyes and listening to others opinions, whether it is denial, approval, dubiousness, or proposition. Established for over four decades, CCDC strives to transform in order to adapt the ever changing environment.

Jumping Frames will also bid farewell to its old module, embracing a critical perspective to discuss the development and possibilities of dance and film, while working hand in hand with artists who insist on their passion. I hope you all enjoy the incredible films selected and the fruitful exchanges ahead!

策展人 的話 2 02 1 年 對 很 多 人 來 說 ， 是 一 個 很 漫 長 的 冬 天 ， 也 是 新 上 任

的 藝 術 總 監 ⸺ 伍 宇 烈 給 城 市 當 代 舞 蹈 團 的 一 個 題 目。 對 我 而言，冬天代表一個斷離 捨 的 過 程 ，是 某 種 愛 念 與 失 落 、 哀 悼與反思、死亡與重生的 季 節 。

今 年 跳 格， 我 邀 請 了 客 席 策 展 人 蔡 倩 怡 合 作 策 劃 兩 個 特 別

的 短 片 節 目， 也 和 香 港 逸 東 酒 店 團 隊 合 辦 一 個 展 覽 項 目 。

今 年 影 展 以 擴 闊 觀 眾 對 於「 表 演 」 和 「 影 像 � 錄 」 兩 者 的 想 像， 探 討 以「 影 像 � 錄 」 為 主 的「 表 演 紀 錄 片 」 性 質 和 可 能性，推動更廣闊的鑒賞 和 討 論 空 間 。

「 表 演 紀 錄 片 」 這 種 創 作 類 型， 是 我 個 人 非 常 想 要 探 討 和

研 究 的 方 向。 因 為 它 提 出 了 對 不 同 媒 介 之 間 的 邊 界 思 考 、 實 驗 和 包 容。 在 紀 錄 片 的 底 蘊 和 實 踐 下 ， 它 除 了 讓 我 們 釋 放 對 身 體 表 演 的 美 學 觀 點 所 帶 來 的 衝 擊 外， 也 讓 創 作 者 探

討 身 體 的 抽 象 表 現， 還 聯 繫 到 個 人 身 分、 族 群 記 憶， 甚 至

存 在 的 意 義 ⸺ 如 何 在 記 錄 當 下 的、 真 實 的 身 體， 同 時 跟 社 會和環境互相呼應。

表 演 藝 術 在 這 急 需 數 碼 改 編 與 展 現 的 季 節 裡， 在 緊 密 的 影 像 生 成 和 發 表 過 程 中， 大 大 促 進 了 各 種 媒 體 藝 術 家 之 間 的

凝 聚 與 分 歧 。 在 這 願 景 下， 2 02 1 年 跳 格 提 出 了 「 目 及 目 」 的 主題概念⸺以眼對眼，面 對 科 技 ， 連 繫 彼 此 。

「 目 及 目 」 希 望 保 持 開 放 性 的 對 話， 鼓 勵 持 續 的 互 相 研 習

和 溝 通， 挑 戰 不 同 的 視 角 和 未 知， 體 現 豐 富 的 交 流 過 程。 我 們 期 望 促 成 這 種 相 遇， 好 讓 令 人 耳 目 一 新 的 創 作 概 念 逐 步 萌芽。

CURATOR’S NOTE This year is a year of winter for many of us metaphorically. It is also the thematic proposition for the Company, put forward by the newly appointed Artistic Director, Yuri Ng. For me, the presence of winter depicts a certain reflective love and lost, mourning and remembering, death and waiting for rebirth and detachment. While confronting the pandemic when digital adaptation has become a submerging trend, we hope to look into this new potentialities with substantial reflections.

A new edition for Jumping Frames 202 1 is the expanded programmes looking into Performative Documentary. We explore the notion of “Performative” and “Documentary” as intervention in the concept, discourse, and hybridity of dance filmmaking.

My collaboration with co-curator Emilie Choi on the short film programmes “Performative Doc” has challenged us further both our perceptions to the current creative outputs for dance/film.

We continue exploring the notion of Liveness and Performativity with “Expanded Space”, an exhibition and installation project collaborating with the Eaton HK team to further extend our research and investigation on 'Performative Documentary’ in the context of non-cinema space presentation of audio-visual works.

By opening up and re-examining its framework, proposing new perspectives and possibilities, Jumping Frames as a platform for crossing disciplinary borders between cinema and performance, dance and digital media, could perhaps becomes a vessel for inter-disciplinary exchange for non-mainstream cinematic works.

We hope to connect to the growing consciousness of body and moving image, choreographic ideas and cinematic mis-en-scène, and looking into the intervention of machinery eye proposed by Vertov in his theory of Kino-eye.

This year's theme “Eyes to Eyes” implies diverse encounters, exchange of ideas, and formulating constructive conversations to set up context or point of entry. Jumping Frames strives to actively engage ourselves into the parallel connection and intersection for renewal and an expanded experience for our audience and industry!

Prologue 世界首映 WORLD PREMIERE

《 女 書 ― 序 》 是 《 女 書 》 三 部 曲 的 序 章 。《 女 書 》

由 2017 年 底 開 始 拍 攝 9 位 不 同 年 代 的 女 性 編 舞 於

2018 至 2020 年 間 的 創 作 和 排 練 。 黎 海 寧 在 2007 年 創 作 的 舞 蹈 《 女 書 》， 以 湖 南 省 江 永 縣 一 帶 ， 且 只 流 傳 在 婦 女 間 的 書 寫 系 統， 再 引 入 大 量 黃 碧 雲 和

西 西 的 文 字 ， 來 描 寫 她 對 女 性 的 不 同 面 向 。《 女 書

― 序 》嘗 試 以 黎 海 寧 的 作 品《女書》的分段方法：「她

們 」、 「 我 」、 「 她 」、 「 她 ／ 我 」、 「我／你」、 「我們」， 為 對 話 方 法 。以 舞 對 舞 ，分 享 不同女編舞對「女性」 關 鍵 詞 和 女 性 創 作 經 驗 的 看 法。

The Chinese title, Nüshu, inspired by Helen Lai's choreographic piece under the same name, documented 9 different female choreographers' creative journeys from 2017 to 2020. It is also a comparison to the unique written language, literally translated as “female writing”, developed over generations by peasant women in Jiangyong County, Hunan Province, practised only among women and remained unknown to the outside world until the 1960s. By incorporating writings of contemporary Hong Kong female writers, Bik-wan Wong and Xi Xi, the director reveals different female perspectives, gives them their voices and creates dialogues through dance.

Redoubt reveals a new direction in the work of renowned contemporary artist and filmmaker, Matthew Barney, creator of the CREMASTER Cycle (1994-2002), DRAWING RESTRAINT 9 (2005) and the film opera River of Fundament (2014). The film follows a sharp-shooter (played by champion Palma rifle shooter, Anette Wachter) in her pursuit of wolves across the winter wilderness of Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, accompanied by two dancers moving in dialogue. Barney appears in the film as an artist employed by the US Forest Service. He tracks and observes the hunter while making a series of copper etchings.

A hoop dance by an indigenous contemporary choreographer is the catalyst for the wolf hunt’s dramatic conclusion. The characters communicate a mythological narrative through dance, letting movement replace language and weave together the story of Diana and Actaeon, cosmology and modern American political narratives. The film has been hailed as ‘breathtakingly beautiful’ by the New York Times, and The Times salute Barney as ‘an idiosyncratic master’, ‘as you emerge you will discover that you have found a new way of seeing’.

From the French Extreme Cinema's figurehead Gaspar Noé (Irreversible, 2002; Enter the Void, 2006; Love, 2015) comes a hypnotic, hallucinatory, and ultimately hair-raising depiction of a party that descends into delirium over the course of one wintry night.

The film takes place in 1996, within a remote and empty school building, features a large ensemble cast of French waackers, krumpers and electro dancers (led by Sofia Boutella) throwing an after-party after a rehearsal.

The all-night celebration takes a darker turn when everyone becomes increasingly agitated and confused after consuming sangria laced with LSD. Noé observes crushes, rivalries, and violence amid a collective psychedelic meltdown.

Approaching the material like a documentary and preparing very little in advance, starting from a page-long outline, shooting over two weeks chronologically, the director allows situations to happen in front of him, using the haunting tale of the troupe as a springboard into chaos and let his casts improvise, to display their physical prowess with a jawdropping spontaneity. The very first dance scene was choreographed by Nina McNeely, incredibly dexterous and mesmeric, while in other scenes, dancers are free to express their individual interior turmoil that drove towards ever-more psychotic performances.

The Beast in the Jungle is a melancholy contemplation on the elapse of time mixes costume drama with dance. Based on the homonymous novella

by Henry James written in 1903, director Clara van Gool places dance at the center of her interpretation of James's novel. The two protagonists, John Marcher (Dane Jeremy Hurst, former Rambert Dance Company dancer) and May Bartram (Sarah Reynolds, former Nederlands Dans Theater dancer) chase each other throughout the film and are caught up in a whirlwind of impossible love. John is obsessed with his impending fate, like a “beast in the jungle”. It is only upon May's death that he realises the catastrophe waiting to happen was his own inability to love.

The Beast in the Jungle is the first feature-length dance film by the director, her past notable work includes successful adaptations of dance performances for the screen: Enter Achilles (1996), by the English physical theatre DV8.

The director was a 23 year old dancer who began her search for identity as a young woman, while embracing her dreams, she was bound by the unbearable burden of expectations imposed by her mother and grandmother about love and marriage.

As a choreographer, she uses film medium to initiate a dialogue with her own body, to question her doubt with brutal honesty. The raw cinematic work and introspective nature in this first fulllength documentary featured Mengqi’s genuine performance with boldness. The film is also an oeuvre for the director transiting from a dancer to an award winning documentary film auteur who made 10 feature documentaries till today.

Once the heir to a family Shinto shrine, young Junya left town and drifted away from his family.

Inspired by the personal story of Junya and the wintry coast of Noto Peninsula, where the harsh winter has a powerful effect on coastal landscapes and the lives of people living there, this soul stirring hybrid documentary combines elements of dance, documentary and fiction focusing on Junya’s voice to recount his relationship with his grandfather, just as Sara uses her body movements as a conduit to express Junya’s melancholy and deep memories of the land.

Director Markku Lehmuskallio has had long connections to the indigenous peoples of the North and has been making films about their lives, art and music since the 1970s. In this latest film, codirected with his son Johannes Lehmuskallio, he composes a fascinating poetic ethnography inspired by indigenous cultures living in the Arctic Circle. Ways of life inherited from ancestors have largely been crushed, but the inner worldview of the people has withstood these challenges and remained intact, at least until now.

Anerca is a film about the breathing amongst the indigenous peoples of the Arctic. There are two types of breathing, life-sustaining breath and that which expresses existence. In Inuit, the word to breathe is a derivative of Anerca. Anerca means soul, breath of life. In the film Anerca, Arctic peoples breathe.

It was about the remarkable Eileen Kramer, 105 years old at the time of filming, still dancing (graceful dramatic movements mostly using the top half of her body), choreographing, writing stories, publishing books and drawing – she is possibly the oldest, most alive and creative soul around today. This film is a portrait of her life. She danced with Gertrude Bodenwieser in 1940s Sydney, an influential European choreographer of German expressionism, who played an important role in shaping early Australian modern dance. She toured around Australia and overseas for the next decade, then lived and worked in France and the US for the next 60 years, before returning to Sydney alone, at the age of 99. The film shows her process in creating a new dance in the style of Bodenwieser, it's like stepping back in time, experiencing a living history.

Eileen lived through the 1918/19 Spanish Flu pandemic and now, during COVID-19, is still deeply committed to creating her art.

At the near-perfect rehearsal before the show, the actor savours his stage performance; with eyes closed, never waking up again, before everyone else awakens.

In the early history of experimental moving images, the entangled nature with performance had rendered a room for experiments in regards to the notion of time and space. This entangled nature offers diversities to include the act of performing, such as scene re-enactments, poetic interpretations through body and movement and the intervention of theatrical tools. We hope to suggest this possible discrepancy and its articulation to the growing discursive form of documentary. “Performative”, which often relates to performance, fictional or constructed events, proposing certain contradiction to the conventional thinking of “documentary” in representation of the “objective truth”. While the concept of “Performative Doc” subverts the constraints of this typical framework — it transgresses the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction, participatory and author centric nature of creation, offer exciting imaginations for movement based artists and filmmakers to their future experimentations.

Saudade is an aural and visual archive narrated entirely in Kristang—a creole language that emerged in 16 th century Portuguese colonial Malacca. The film reimagines rituals and choreography characteristic of early Eurasian kampongs in three acts: a song and dance of the Jinkli Nona, a scene between a shrimp fisherman and his wife, and a crosscultural encounter with the orang minyak.

Between the social movements of 2019 and the raging pandemic in 2020, the state of society had been pulled between two extremes. Suddenly the virtual world seems to be the only world that can function normally. Avatar was created in response to this background, by navigating through audio and visual, to help you who are in front of the computer all day long, to use a meditative method, to recall the memories of connections between peers, and imaging the ability to transform.

Using folklore and myth as narrative anchors, Morton weaves his personal identity and allegorical storytelling into cinema to examine the origins of Eurasians. The intermingled Asian and European ancestry of the domiciled community is captured through the seemingly disparate appearance of a supernatural Malay legend alongside characters donning costumes that draw upon the conventions of Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch dress. Set against the exultant energies of the Eurasian imagination, the film tells a story of loss and displacement of a people and its language.

Working as the lowest denominator of the society, wandering about in the streets, sleeping in the filthiest corner of the city – living people who look like they are dead make their living in the darkest places and fondle in wastelands with their half-awaken dreams.

Lapse is investigating an unpredictable space between reality and vision. Melati Suryodarmo drew inspiration from the chaotic social structure which appears in our daily environment. The illogical rules which the society creates in order to survive the oppressed situation is one of the failures under the common agreement. Between the vision of the future and reality of the now there is a potential of failure which is covered by idealism. In Lapse, Melati creates patterns of movements which navigate the dancers to connect by failures – yet to collectively attempt a new structure and alchemy of senses.

A woman returns from abroad after an incident. In her state of jetlag, she finds herself falling between the gaps of past and present.

The film is a re-staging of instructional texts from Home Economics Textbooks used in Singapore in the 1970s. It consists of three chapters outlining the correct manner for personal grooming, house-keeping and entertaining.

Shot in a highly stylized manner, the film takes cues from 1970s visual culture and films. In choreographed sequences, the actresses highlight the extreme performativity of femininity through gestures and costumes to a soundtrack of highly gendered phrases taken verbatim from home economics textbooks. It also invites the viewer to reconsider the aesthetic joys of domesticity at a time when most of the world continues to experience stages of pandemic lockdown in their homes.

While looking into the pragmatic and developmental approach to counter the rising urgency of digital adaptation for live works, the two days industry sessions hope to instigate dialogues between cross discipline creators and producers to navigate a new collective ecosystem of moving image and choreographic works, exploring new possibilities to choreography of body, time, space, text, objects, technology and more.

The two days talk will be focusing on two conversations with specific topics expanded with group discussion led by industry players Low Kee Hong (curator), Joseph Lee (dance artist), Cheuk Cheung (filmmaker), examining this transition, assessing on case studies, brainstorming new vision on a constructive platform, offering insights for future crossdisciplinary interventions and intersections.
