CCC President Seth Carter Colby Community College strives to be the best in each endeavor, and athletics are no exception. At CCC our students are not only leaders on the court and fields, but leaders in the classroom as well.

Wins and losses are not the only measure of success for athletes. At Colby Community College, we take pride in having high-character individuals who are prepared to be successful in life. In 2014-2015, seven teams earned NJCAA All-Academic Team of the Year honors. In addition, eight student-athletes earned academic recognition.

Athletics are essential to student and community engagement because the lessons learned in competition transcend any one sport. Student-athletes learn commitment, pride, and integrity.

These valuable life lessons serve students as they become productive, working citizens. For these reasons and many more, Colby Community College invests in athletics and places a high priority on their success.

Athletic Director Ryan Sturdy

Athletic Director Ryan Sturdy

Ryan Sturdy enters his eighth season as the Athletic Director at CCC. Sturdy also served as the interim athletic director during the 2007 spring season. In addition, he was the head softball coach for the Lady Trojans for six years.

Prior to being the athletic director and softball coach, Sturdy was the Assistant Athletic Director and Assistant Softball Coach for nine-plus seasons under coach Carl Adams. Sturdy also served as the Recreation Director for the City of Colby.

Since becoming the full-time athletic director in 2008, Sturdy has supervised the hiring of volleyball coach, Carey Jones; men’s and women’s track and field coach, Cameron Rieth; men’s basketball coach, Rusty Grafel; wrestling coach, David Nordhues and women’s basketball coach Antowin Edwards.

He is a graduate of Colby Community College and holds a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Leadership from Fort Hays State University His wife Christy teaches chemistry, physics and math at Colby High School.

They have one daughter, Aidyn GraceAnn.

Athletic Trainer Kipp Nelson Kipp Nelson has been the head athletic trainer at Colby Community College since 1998. Nelson is responsible for all nine athletic programs, providing service for practices and home competitions. In addition to his athletic training duties, Nelson oversees the campus swimming pool which includes the training of certified lifeguards and supervising work-study students.

Nelson received his bachelor’s degree in 1994 from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he earned the Wallace Outstanding Athletic Trainer Award. After graduation, Nelson became the Head Athletic Trainer for the Douglas Unified School District in Douglas, Ariz. During his two years there, he started a sports medicine program that oversaw 12 sports, as well as sports medicine classes.

Kipp Nelson Nelson received his master’s degree from Eastern New Mexico University in 1999, where he served as the graduate assistant athletic trainer. He worked with volleyball, basketball, and baseball while attending ENMU. Nelson lives in Colby with his wife Linda, who works at the college as the Transfer and Advising Specialist They have two daughters, Kaitlyn and Claire.

Lady Trojans Softball

Softball Coaching Staff Steve Kinnett comes to Colby Community College from Bailey, Colorado, outside of Denver. After compiling over 420 wins with various “A” travel clubs in Colorado and a winning percentage of nearly .700, Kinnett made the transition to the college level in 2013. A retired self-employed contractor for 25 years, he looks forward to the challenges of improving the softball program on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

Bringing expertise in all aspects of the game, Kinnett has an optimistic outlook on the season with nine sophomore starters returning from last year. With the addition of eight quality freshmen players and individuals, the team looks to have a strong season.

Kinnett graduated from Kansas State University with a business management degree in 1989. He has been married to wife Sheri for 34 years, and has 3 daughters, Stephanie, Chelsea and Courtney. Coach Steve also has three grandchildren, Deegan, Brody and Lyla.

Mary McLaughlin enters her fifth season as an assistant coach with the Lady Trojan softball team. McLaughlin is a former player for Colby, serving as the team’s catcher in the spring of 2007 and 2008. McLaughlin led the team in hitting as a freshman including batting average and runs batted in.

McLaughlin assists head coach Steve Kinnett with all aspects of the program including game preparation, conditioning, and recruiting.

2015-16 Baseball Team

Baseball Head Coach

Ryan Carter enters his 18th season at the helm of Trojan baseball with a career mark of 493 wins and 467 losses.

Carter holds records for most wins in the program’s history, and he is the longest-tenured coach.

The Trojans finished the 2015 season a disappointing 23-27, but did make the playoffs for the 17th consecutive year under his direction. The 2015 Trojans also placed four players on the All-Jayhawk West teams and one on the All-Region VI Team.

Coach Carter believes success only comes involvement of the entire program. “It takes a lot of hard work and very dedicated players and coaches to maintain a certain level of accomplishment. We have players and coaches that believe in our program and continue to work to keep us at a level we have grown accustomed to.”

Coach Carter has worked diligently to make CCC a place where young men learn the game of baseball and become better people as well. During his tenure, 165 players have transferred to four-year institutions, including 37 to Division I universities. Ten former players have been drafted or signed to independent contracts—Daniel Devonshire, Travis Mortimore, T.R. Keating, Kris Jiggitts, Eric Sim, Pat Farrell, Dan April, Sean Lydon, Aaron Dunsmore and Chris Hall.

Carter came to Colby directly from the University of Redlands where he played two seasons. At Redlands, he earned All-Conference honors and won the team’s Gold Glove Award for his work behind the plate his senior season. Prior to attending Redlands, Carter redshirted and played two seasons at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona.

He grew up in Page, Arizona, on the banks of Lake Powell, one of the premiere vacation spots in the nation. While at Page High School, he starred in baseball and wrestling, earning AllState honors in both sports his senior year.

Coach Carter has been married 12 years to wife Krista, a psychology instructor at CCC. They have two daughters, 10-year-old Kenzie and 7-year-old Ryler.

Baseball Assistant Coaches Brett Becker

Third-year Assistant Coach Brett Becker is a graduate of Hayden High School in Topeka, played baseball for Cowley Community College from 2004-06 and transferred to Fort Hays State University where he played for the Tigers from 2007-09.

He was selected All-MIAA 1st-team utility player as well as Daktronics AllCentral Region Utility player in 2008.

Coach Becker coached outfielders and hitters at Barton Community College in 2010 and worked with infielders and hitters at Emporia State University in 2012. In 2013 he worked with infielders and hitters at Fort Hays University. He helped lead the Tigers offense to a .341 team batting average, ranking them 2nd in Division II baseball.

He has worked the past five summers as the Associate Head Coach of the Topeka Golden Giants--a summer collegiate team. The team was the 2014 Mid-Plains Regular Season Champions. He has coached eight former players who have been drafted by Major League Baseball..’

Becker received his undergraduate degree From Fort Hays State University and his Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from FHSU in 2014.

Aaron Lambertson

Aaron Lamberston returns to Colby Trojans baseball to coach outfield and hitting, a position he held prior at Northeastern Junior College and Evangel University. Lambertson was also head coach at Sterling High School. During his two-year tenure he taught special education and resurrected the baseball program, leading the Tigers to the state playoffs and a Final Four berth for the first time in 20 years.

Lambertson played center field for the Trojans in 2005. He transferred to Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colo., for two years, and finished his playing career at Evangel University while being honored with All-Conference awards.

Originally from Akron, Colo., Aaron received his Bachelor of Science in Recreation, Kinesiology and Physiology at Evangel University, as well as a Minor in Biblical Studies.

Men’s and Women’s Track and Field

Cross Country and Track Coaches Head Coach Cameron Rieth Coach Rieth is in his first year as coach at Colby Community

College after serving as an assistant for four years at Fort Hays State University. At FHSU, he helped guide 15 athletes to national qualifying times, 15 all-region performers, and 32 all-conference performers – seven of which were individual distance conference champions in track and cross country. In 2012 he helped guide the cross country team to its first conference championship since the late 1980’s.

Coach Rieth started his collegiate career as an athlete at Garden City (KS) Community College. After two years of competing with the Broncbusters and becoming an All-American, he transferred to Fort Hays State University (KS), where he was a 10 x All-MIAA distance runner and national qualifier in the indoor 5,000 meters. He scored for the Tigers in all distances from 3,000 meters up to the 10,000 meters.

During his time at FHSU, he broke indoor school records in the 5,000m (14:44.36) and the 3,000m (8:35.14).

Coach Rieth is a Garden City native and ran four years at Garden City High School. During his time at Fort Hays State he proudly helped coach the Hays High School cross country team, Victoria High School track team and the Hays Striders youth track team during the summer.

Rieth earned two degrees from FHSU, one in health & human Performance (2013) and another in secondary education (2014). He also earned an associate degree from Garden City Community College

Assistant Coach David Obermeyer Coach Obermeyer

is in his first year at Colby Community

College. The

Omaha, Neb., native came to CCC in the fall of 2015 from Omaha South High School, where he coached the cross country team for two seasons.

In addition to coaching, he was a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) Certified Personal Trainer in Omaha since 2011. The wealth of knowledge in weight training and performance athletes sparked an interest to return to coaching upper level track and field athletes. Prior to personal training, he served as assistant track and cross country coach at Garden City Community College under Coach Dan Delgado, who has since become assistant Athletic/Sports Information Director at the institution. At GCCC, Coach Obermeyer, or “Carrots,” helped lead nine athletes to All-American status, as well as assisting multiple student-athletes earn All-Region VI and All KJCCC accolades.

While in high school at Benson High School in Omaha, Coach Obermeyer was part of a state championship and nationally ranked cross country team. He ran for Garden City Community College and graduated with an Associate in General Studies, and later earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management from Wayne State College. Additionally, Coach Obermeyer is a war veteran who served in the United States Army.

He currently serves as a staff sergeant in the Nebraska National Guard, a post he’s held for over 14 years.

1999: Tom & Judy McCarty buy a wheat farm near Rexford, KS. 2000: Our family begins milking cows in Rexford.

2007: Community of Bird City asks our family to consider building another dairy.

2008: Our family begins milking cows at Bird City Dairy.

2009: We build a new area especially for young cows.

2010: The Dannon Company and our family begin discussions which lead to a collaboration.

McCarty Family Farms milks approximately 7,200 cows each day.

Approximately 59,400 gallons of milk is gathered. The dairies reclaim 39,000 gallons/day of water from condensing milk. They have reduced the number of trucks required to ship milk by 75%. The number of man-hours required to build the processing plant was 50,000.

McCarty Family Farms currently employs 105 people.
