DO IT BADLY

Seriously. If you want to ride a motorcycle, do it badly. Take the course. Kill the engine. Miss neutral six times in a row and pull that frantic, clacking foot-tap on the shifter while pretending you meant to do it. Sit at a red-light white-knuckling the clutch, see another rider, and throw a stiff head-twitch because you haven’t figured out how to wave without launching into traffic yet.

kick into gear because somehow, it’s still down. Ride around the block. Then do it again.

We’ve got this garbage expectation that we should be good at things before we’ve earned it. Motorcycles make it worse because some local guys always make it look easy. He glides into a spot, hits neutral without looking, and waves like he was born on two wheels.

Do It Badly

That’s where Throttle On comes in.

Nobody swings a leg over a bike for the first time knowing what they’re doing. Nobody.

Throttle On is a community-funded program created by the Warriors of the Wind Foundation to help veterans access motorcycle safety and training courses.

Continued from the front page

The riders who judge beginners just scrubbed their own embarrassing starts from memory. Every veteran has stalled. Every single one has done the neutral dance. Every one of them has realized they’re sitting on 400 pounds of steel they might now be qualified to control yet. They kept riding anyway. You don’t get comfortable and then start riding. You ride, and comfort catches up. You don’t learn everything first and then take the class. You take it because you don’t know anything yet. You don’t need to make motorcycles your entire personality to give it a shot, either. Take the beginner course. Learn the mechanics. See if you like it. You don’t need to ride across the state your first week, month, or even year. You just don’t. Ride around the block. Then

Veterans research the course they want, pick the provider, and apply. If approved, Warriors of the Wind pays the training provider directly. The veteran still has to show up.

around the neighborhood. Then across town.

Ready isn’t coming. You have to start without it.

There’s no prize for skipping steps.

So, stall the bike. Ask the stupid question. Drill the same awkward U-turn fifty times. Ride around the block while everyone else blasts off to the mountains.

There is, however, massive freedom on the other side of looking like an idiot. That’s true on two wheels, and it’s true for anything else worth doing. We waste years waiting to feel ready. Ready to try. Ready to risk it. Ready to stop embarrassing ourselves.

They have to enroll. They have to attend. They have to do the work. Throttle On isn’t a shortcut. It removes one barrier so veterans can take the first step themselves. That fits right in with doing it badly.

You don’t need to know how to ride before you Because you’ll never get good take a safety course. That at anything you don’t give defeats the entire point. yourself permission to start. You don’t need confidence. You don’t need to own a bike. You don’t need to For veterans, sometimes know if you’ll still be riding that first step is the part twenty years from now. that costs money. Do it awkwardly. Do it badly.

You just need to be willing to learn. Motorcycling demands total focus. You have to pay attention to the road, the bike, the cars, your speed, your hands, your feet, and the exact second you’re in. For a lot of veterans, that creates a rare stretch of quiet. Throttle On is meant to help veterans find those moments and also looks at the connection between motorcycling and veteran mental health.

and after training so the foundation can gather hard data on how task-oriented riding affects stress, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms.

Community supports funds the whole operation.

It doesn’t take one massive donor to keep the wheels turning. Ten dollars a month helps. Enough people giving a little puts veteran through training, one rider at a time. Throttle On.

And if that first course comes with a few stalls, missed shifts, and ugly U-turns? Good. Veterans are allowed to do it badly, too.

Surviving The Darkness Sarah Jackman WRITER There are a lot of ways to talk about mental health, and most of them aren’t very fun. You have pamphlets, seminars, and resource tables stacked with brochures people politely take and bury at the bottom of a bag. You have speeches about awareness and signs about asking for help. All those things have their place. We just kept coming back to one problem: how do you get people to stay? How do you get the biker whose friends dragged him out of the garage, the teenager who hates lectures, the veteran who doesn’t talk about that stuff, the parent chasing three kids, and the stranger who stopped because they saw bikes in the park to end up in the same space long enough to actually connect? Our answer was zombies.

That’s how Surviving the Darkness started. Warriors of the Wind Foundation has always focused on veterans, suicide prevention, and mental health. But mental health isn’t just a veteran issue. It hits bikers, first responders, parents, teenagers, families, and the people standing right next to us who will never say a word about what they’re carrying. We didn’t want to build another event where people sit down and listen to someone preach about why mental health matters. We wanted people to actually want to be there. We wanted bikes in the lot, kids running around, vendors, food, raffles, costumes, and people laughing, talking, and staying longer than they planned. We wanted someone to come because their friend dragged them along and leave knowing

about a local resource they had never heard of before.

the house and being around people is enough for the day.

Zombie Tag became the heart of that plan because it gives people something to gather around without making conversations about mental health the price of admission.

Surviving the Darkness is designed to feel like a community event first.

You don’t have to walk in ready to tell your story. You don’t even have to have a story. You don’t have to explain why you showed up. You can come because you like bikes, your kid heard the word “zombies,” you support veterans, someone you love has struggled, or you just want something fun to do. The point is getting everyone into the same space.

The mental health resources will be there. The veteran groups will be there. The heavy conversations will be there if you want them. But so are the bikes, food, vendors, costumes, and a park full of people pretending there’s a zombie outbreak in Lemoore. We aren’t sharing every detail of Zombie Tag yet because half the fun is letting the game unfold. There will be different ways to play, whether you want to run for your life or sit back safely and watch everyone else do it.

Sometimes a resource is useful long before you’re ready to ask for it. Sometimes Here’s what we want you you meet the right person to know right now: while waiting in line for food. Continued on the next page Sometimes just getting out of

It’s a place to show up. It’s a place to have fun. It’s a place where the heavy stuff can exist without swallowing the whole day. If someone walks away knowing one more person, one more resource, or one more place to turn when life gets rough, then Warriors of the Wind built what we set out to build.

is $25, and day-of registration is $35. Registering early helps us plan before Halloween hits and everything turns into controlled chaos. We’re also looking for vendors, community groups, sponsors, donors, and volunteers.

The Details

Events like this don’t happen because one person has everything figured out. They happen because a lot of people bring one piece of the puzzle.

Surviving the Darkness takes over Veterans Park in Lemoore on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If you want to play, register. If you want a booth, reach out. If you want to sponsor or donate, reach out. If you want to help, reach out.

Zombie Tag registration is open now. Early registration

We swear it’ll be a good time!
