Minutes of the CCBA Annual Membership Meeting 9/12/2022

Called to order 12:13, Opening remarks and welcome

REPORTS

A. Treasurer’s Report, Ben Melnick

Discussed the slight losses due to routine increases in expenses and loss of CLE and social event revenue during COVID. We have healthy reserves. Presented the 2022/2023 Proposed Budget.

Motion to approve the budget (M. Boyd/Aquadro) approved

B. Annual Report of Superior Court, Judge Vanderwood

Discussed the National Center for State Courts July 2022 final report. Workgroups are forming regarding the specifics of implementation. 1/1/23 is the implementation date. Superior Court continues to work on the COVID caused backlog of trials. There has been a recent uptick in trials; 15-18 trials a month would make efficient use of court time.

C. Annual Report of District Court, Judge Osler

Bryan Farrell is the new Court Administrator. There will soon be a change in the Presiding Judge. On Base launches 9/26/22. Judge Osler mentioned grants for indigent defense and to study alternatives to incarceration for probation violations. There have been changes to probation. Zoom option for hearings continues.

D. CCBA Committee Reports

Family Law Section, David Commisa The section has 110 members. There are monthly meetings and bimonthly social events. The next meeting is in October.

Young Lawyers Section: Leila Arefi-Pour The section has monthly happy hour gatheringsand the next one is 9/29/22 at Heathen. A CLE series is being planned for January.

Guardianship, Probate, and Elder Law Section: Julie Payne Julie was unable to attend the meeting and asked that anyone with questions about this section contact her.

CLE Committee, Jane Clark In person CLEs are starting this month with the Trial Skills Series. You can come to all of the topics or selected ones. There is a discount for purchasing the entire series. Look for a December ethics CLE. Next meeting is 10/3/22. Please contact Lisa Darco if you are interested in this committee and you can email Jane ideas for CLE topics.

CCBA Diversity Equity Inclusion Committee, Erica Aquadro/ Deb Wechselblatt Judges and attorneys work on this committee. Meetings are monthly. CLEs offered this year have included Neurology of Equity and Inclu sion CLE series and The Bench is for All CLE. The committee is excited to bring David Hoffman, who is a founding member of the Boston Law Collaborative and teaches at Harvard Law, to present on 10/21/22. This CLE will be via Zoom. Registration is open. The committee has created a mission statement and goals. The committee is working on a Street Law program in the Vancouver School District. A coffee cart social is planned for early October.

Hearsay Committee: Whitney Hawke The committee meets the first Thursday of the month at noon via Zoom. Do you want to write articles? Do you have new ideas for content? Contact Lisa Darco.

Social Committee: Christie Emrich In person fun has made a comeback this year with Bowling with the Judges, the Summer Soiree, the Jim Mayhew Memorial Golf Tournament,and the Young Lawyers v. Old Lawyers Softball Game (Young Lawyers won). The return of Barrister’s Ball in March is in the works. Let Christie know if you want to be on the committee.

Jesse Jacobs passed the torch to the Phalen Administration. Christina spoke briefly. She wants to increase CCBA membership and will be focusing on outreach.

2021/2022 PRESIDENT’S AWARD TO JESSE JACOBS

Presented by Christina Phalen to Jesse Jacobs. Jesse was awarded a nifty plaque to thank him for his service co-piloting the CCBA through COVID as well as managing the more typical duties of V.P. and President.

BOARD APPRECIATION AWARD TO CHRISTIE EMRICH

Christie has certainly left her mark on the CCBA. She served on the board for 6 years. She has worked on the Social Committee, the CLE Committee, and was instrumental in the formation of the DEI Committee. She also co-piloted the CCBA through COVID as V.P. and President. Thank you Christie!
