DEBBIE CRANE
Born in Amsterdam in 1964, Debbie Crane moved to Jersey with her family as a young child, since then the Island has been her home. Crane has a background in creative enterprise, setting up her company ‘Enchanted Wood’ in 1991 making traditional painted wooden toys as well as working as a mural painter for individuals and local spaces. For many years Crane has been working with children as a nursery school teacher and creative workshop leader in the community. Having had no formal art training Crane spent a year at Highlands college studying under Ralph Elliot, Glyn Burton, Nick Romeril and Jason Butler. The time at Highlands allowed her to develop her practice and experiment with materials and techniques and she continues to attend life drawing and other specialist classes. Five years ago, Crane had a studio built in the back garden, a place of creative solitude where she is able to concentrate on her practice. Debbie Crane has a natural ability in drawing and painting and her approach has always been experimental, much like the children she teaches, making pictures in the moment and because she must.
Crane embraces the creative freedom of mark making and revels in the exuberance and possibilities of colour and texture. Life and art are intertwined for Crane whose family, friends, and everyday local life appear in her work. What transpires is an authenticity that feels both direct and joyful without the crippling effects of self-conscious overthinking. Winner of the Jersey Summer Exhibition 2022, for her painting Greve, Open Hands will be Debbie Crane’s first solo show with CCA Galleries International and the culmination of work she has made since having her own studio. We welcome you to this perfect antidote to the January blues as we open our 2024 programme with a remarkable exhibition full of colour and joy.
