An estimated 500,000 survivors of the Holocaust were still alive in 2014. Today, experts believe that number has dwindled to 100,000. The rapidly declining number of people left alive to testify to the horrors of the Holocaust comes at a time when we are experiencing a dramatic rise in anti-Semitic incidents throughout the world.

I went to Poland over 25 years ago with my grandfather on the March of the Living. During that life changing experience, I learned a lot more about what happened to our people during the Holocaust. My experience connected me with those that were murdered. I also want you to feel more connected to what happened. I believe it has never been more important.

According to a comprehensive national survey of Holocaust awareness and knowledge among adults in the United States, over two thirds of Americans have never heard of Auschwitz and half could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto. One third of Americans believe only 2 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. Over 45% of those asked, could not name any of the 40 ghettos or

Congregants and attendees from across the country filled Pulaski-Rauch for a one-night presentation of Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s dinner theatre, the Best of Broadway, on May 19, 2019. Over 500 people enjoyed this magical evening, which was chaired by Alice Small and Judy Yambra, musically arranged by Cantor Meir Finkelstein and produced by Lorraine Horwitz and Bruce Stein. Courtney Zubowski-Haas hosted the evening which was coordinated by Jennifer Sutton.

Performing to a packed house was Becker KB, Rebecca Bloome, Emily Finkelstein, Alicia Gianni, Nava Smith-Litvack, Jordan Sheldon, Bruce Stein, Julia Strug and the Zamranim Choir: Bailey Goldstein, Emery Goldstein, Matthew Grosman, Orly Kammerman, Laren Michelman, Haley Nagger, Tova Staller and Sophia Winard, led by Dora Lee Grinberg. The band included Brian Granquist, David Goldstein, Greg Sherman, Cindy Walls, Mike Wheeler and Woody Witt.

We hope it becomes a fun and lighthearted way to get to know each other better and celebrate the greatness of the Congregation Beth Yeshurun community.

Here’s what we are looking for: Mensch of the Month: We all know people who live by the mission of “tikkun olam.” Some do so in their work; the boards they serve; their children’s schools; their volunteering activities.

All are certainly well qualified for nomination. But we also want to learn about those folks whose names don’t just appear on board letterhead; who don’t just chair major fundraisers; who don’t just write checks that put their names on walls, rooms and playgrounds. We want to know about those unsung heroes who quietly “repair the world” with wonderful gestures behind the scenes when no one is watching. Each monthly Mensch recipient will also be entitled to name a charity that will receive a generous donation in their honor from the Rabbi’s discretionary fund.

Schtick: Heard any good “uncle jokes” lately, the ones retold each year around the Seder table that cause a momentary chuckle, but then a heartier laugh later when you finally get it? Or, has your kid come home from BYDS preschool with a cute little riddle or story from his/her Morah that you actually find quite witty? Well, we want to hear about it and so does the rest of the congregation. These days, we all need a good laugh at least once a month.

Mazel Moments: While the Rabbi announces anniversaries from the pulpit each week, and we can read about them in other sections of the Message, we want to know about all those big life events as well as the honors and accomplishments that warrant a hearty yasherkoach! Having a baby? Getting married? Got a big promotion at work? Received an award from an organization you serve? Had a book published? Let us know about anything that deserves a “mazel tov” so we can share the good news with the entire congregation.

The Jewish Experience: Discovered your Bubbe’s great long lost mandel bread recipe?

Recommend any new Jewish books? Seen an ancient synagogue or artifact on your recent travels, pictures welcome? We are looking for experiences that will enhance our Jewish lives. Share that latest and greatest Jewish experience.

B’nai Mitzvah

Rush Monroe Joskowitz (June 1) is the son of Aaron Joskowitz and Kimberly Scheigert; brother of Seth and Lola, grandson of Pepi & Steve Nichols; great grandson of Louise and the late Rubin Joskowitz. Rush is currently a 7th grader at Tay’s Junior High where he played football, is an avid biker, has a passion for playing baseball, and loves to rollerblade. Rush will be donating a portion of his monetary gifts to Holocaust Museum Houston in honor of his greatgrandparents.

Beth Yeshurun's 100 JEWISH MEN are the 2019 Champions of the Houston Synagogue League. The League consisted of three other teams from Temple Emanu El, Brith Shalom and Beth israel. The team was managed by Paul Katz and captained by Jerrad Bloome and Michael Krost. All games were played on Sunday morning at Bayland Park.

ISRAEL-A-PALOOZA 2019: Wonders of Israel Religious School families had a great morning at the fifth ISRAEL-A-PALOOZA on Sunday, May 5. The school was filled with over 300 students, siblings, parents, grandparents, volunteers, and staff.

This year’s theme was Wonders of Israel, which showcased the uniqueness of the country. Every student received a guidebook with questions to complete. Stations this year included making sand art, helping create an Israeli flag made of recycled bottle caps, completing games about Israeli inventions, playing a matching game with famous Israeli buildings, guessing if buildings are ancient or modern, and completing a tour of Israel on a giant interactive map. Students also had the opportunity to shop at the shuk (market), write and place prayers in a model Kotel (Western Wall), and take a souvenir photo. After completing the stations, students earned a prize. Younger students received an Israeli flag magic towel and older students got a duffel bag. Everyone enjoyed delicious falafel and Israeli juice for lunch.

An enormous thank you to Joyce and Arthur Dauber for their ongoing support of this family celebration. This program would not be possible without their sponsorship, and it was great to have them and their family participate at the event.

ISRAEL-A-PALOOZA was planned by Education Director Sheryl Eskowitz and Youth Programming Coordinator Sarah Goldberg. The entire Religious School staff also played a huge part in the morning with each staff member working a station. In addition, over 30 teens and adults volunteered their time before and during to make this event such a success. We are already looking forward to next year’s ISRAEL-A-PALOOZA!

THE MOLLIE AND LOUIS KAPLAN MUSEUM OF JUDAICA Walk in to our synagogue from the parking lot and you find yourself in one of the most unusual and unexpected museums in the country. It’s our very own Mollie and Louis Kaplan Museum of Judaica!

Have you unwittingly walked past our many displays of ritual objects, our precious art, our examples of everyday life as a Jew without giving it another thought?! Look closely the next time you come to shul. This collection, your collection, has evolved over the last forty years and should not be ignored.

As you examine the display cases, you will find many objects with which you are familiar as well as some items you haven’t seen before.

GIVING OPPORTUNITIES AT CONGREGATION BETH YESHURUN Tree of Life Simcha Celebration Leaves and boulders on the Tree of Life, located in the atrium just outside Stein Hall, are a beautiful and lasting act of tzedakah to celebrate a simcha, honor someone special or commemorate an event. Each golden leaf and boulder is individually engraved with a personalized message and attached to the tree. The recipient will receive a letter from the synagogue notifying them that a leaf or boulder was engraved in their honor. Leaf: $600 | Boulder: $1800 to $2400 Repairing Beth Yeshurun’s Torahs through Torah ReJEWvination An elegant and prominent plaque listing those who have helped to support the maintenance and restoration of Beth Yeshurun’s Torah scrolls is to be placed inside the Beechnut entry to the Barg Sanctuary and Pulaski-Rauch Auditorium.

This act of tzedakah is especially important to our synagogue as over time, a number of our Torahs have been rendered not kosher due to separation between the Torah’s parchment and seams; discoloration or cracking of the ink used by the Sofer to scribe the Torah; or detachment of the Eitz Chaim. Torah ReJEWvination contributions ensure continued maintenance and repair to all of Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s scrolls, ensuring that we fulfill the commandment to show great respect and sanctify our Torahs. Plaque listing: $2500 Rebuild Beth Yeshurun Pillars An incredible display of global support to rebuild Beth Yeshurun in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey is permanently placed inside the Bender-Levy main lobby. As we continue to rebuild Beth Yeshurun, we are mindful of our tremendous need to ensure that our synagogue beautifully and tastefully supports the needs of our members. These beautiful glass pillars, created by local artist Bill Meek, maintain individually engraved plaques, honoring those who have and continue to assist in our rebuilding efforts. Engraved plaque: $5000 Freedman-Levit Sanctuary Commemorative plaques adorn the walls inside the vestibule entry of the Freedman-Levit Sanctuary. The Gathering Place provides a free of charge loving, safe and fun environment for care partners experiencing memory loss due to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke or other forms of dementia.

The Gathering Place meets once a month, at Congregation Beth Yeshurun. The meetings combine physical movement, socialization, music, and other memory-stimulating activity in a safe and comfortable 3 1/2 hour time block, enabling caregivers to attend to their personal needs without worry. A professional staff member attends each Gathering Place to provide expert support and assistance to the volunteers. The Beth Yeshurun Sisterhood is a proud suporter of the Gathering Place.
