Summer is over and the High Holy Days Many people know about TORCH, a group of Orthodox are late this year. rabbis who teach various classes around Houston. AROUND THE SHUL MENSCH OF THE MONTH

MAZEL MOMENTS

Murray Kalmin recently guided “Team Houston” as its delegation leader to the annual Maccabi Games, this year in Atlanta. Each summer, local Jewish communities from across the country host over 3,000 teens for a week of athletic competitions and bonding with like-minded youth as well as an array of social action and Jewish enrichment activities. In prior years, Murray has served as Maccabi baseball coach, Athletics Chair (when Houston last served as a host city), and has been the delegation head for the past three years.

Yasherkoach to two wonderful Beth Yeshurun women: Hilary Nitsun on riding off into retirement sunset, exchanging her Beth Yeshurun employee badge for a bottle of sunscreen and a few good books and Sara Kaiser, a lifetime congregant, Beth Yeshurun Bat Mitzvah, who has hit the ground running, keeping the Cantor’s schedule in order, while also preparing the Bat Mitzvah families for their big weekend. Congratulations to the young athletes who accompanied Coach Murray Kalmin on the recent trip to Atlanta for Maccabi. Not only for their competitive spirit, but for enhancing their Jewish lives by interacting with likeminded kids, touring Jewish landmarks in another city, and participating in a meaningful community service day.

While most know Murray as a sport fanatic and talented coach, he actually was drawn to Maccabi for the Jewish enrichment it provides the teenagers who attend. To Murray, the highlight of the week was the Opening Ceremony which included a tribute to the Munich 11 Israeli athletes who lost their lives simply because they were Jewish. “Maccabi allows our young athletes the chance to play sports and leave it all out on the field and court in the true spirit of competition, while representing their home cities. More importantly, it provides them an opportunity to forge a true bond with Israel and engage with other teens from all over the world to feel a strong sense of Jewish identity.”

THE JEWISH EXPERIENCE

When he’s not working on Maccabi, Murray serves as President of Nathan Segal & Company, an agriculture commodities trading firm founded by his grandfather in 1947. He and his wife, Amy, have three wonderful (and athletic) children and together they enjoy attending as many Astros baseball and UT football games a year as possible. Murray attended BYDS, was Bar MItzvahed at our synagogue, and served on our Board and membership committee for several years. In honor of Murray, Rabbi Strauss will be making a donation from his discretionary fund to iWrite, a children’s literacy program that supports teachers and students by establishing a love for reading and developing writing skills in the classroom.

The Strauss Family Visits The Great Synagogue of Rome (Italian: Tempio Maggiore di Roma)

The present Synagogue was constructed shortly after the unification of Italy in 1870, when the Kingdom of Italy captured Rome and the Papal States ceased to exist. The Roman Ghetto was demolished and the Jews were granted citizenship. In addition to serving as a house of worship, it is also serves as a cultural and organizational centre for la Comunità Ebraica di Roma (the Jewish community of Rome). It houses the offices of the Chief Rabbi of Rome, as well as the Jewish Museum of Rome.

THE SCHTICK

The Jewish Museum of Rome houses an impressive art collection. The collection includes around 900 liturgical and ceremonial textiles, illuminated parchments, around 100 marble pieces and about 400 pieces of silverwork. Also displayed are some of the many documents held in the Community’s archives. A visit to the museum offers extraordinary information on the Jewish presence in Rome since the second century BCE. Adjacent to the synagogue are several kosher restaurants for any appetite. If you ever have a chance to visit Rome, make sure to stop by this historic Jewish area. One Sunday morning a nice Jewish mother went into her son’s bedroom and she said “Son, wake up. It’s time to go to shul.” He kinda groaned and rolled over and responded “No Mom, I’m not going today.” She scoffed “What do you mean you’re not going? Why not?” He said “Mom, I’ll give you two good reasons. Number one, I don’t like those people. And number two, they don’t like me.” She said “Son, that’s no excuse. I’ll give you two Better reasons why you SHOULD go. Number one, you’re fifty-nine years old and number two, you’re the Rabbi.”

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 - JERRY GREENSPAN - AIPAC - 2020 ELECTION Jerry Greenspan joined AIPAC in March 2012; today, in his role as Regional Political Director, Jerry works day-in and day-out to increase pro-Israel political participation in the Southwest. A life-long Texan, Jerry is responsible for educating candidates and members of Congress throughout the 7-state region. Prior to joining AIPAC, Jerry served as Chief of Staff, Legislative Director and Campaign Manager for a Texas State Representative, and was active in both state and local Houston politics. Jerry will discuss the upcoming 2020 Presidential & Congressional elections and their impact on the U.S.- Israel relationship. Jerry will also discuss how AIPAC approaches candidates for office and how anyone concerned with the safety and security of the US and Israel should also consider engaging in the political process.

Please be aware that our security procedures are intended to provide for the security and safety of our congregants and visitors. We would appreciate your full cooperation with all these procedures.

If you need High Holy Day tickets for a guest or a letter of reciprocity for yourself, please contact Mindi Stern, Director of Member Relations by Friday, September 20th at 713.666.1881 or mstern@bethyeshurun.org.

• You must have a ticket and picture ID to enter any of the High Holy Day services. Please have your ticket and picture ID ready to show at the door to gain entry into the synagogue. If you have misplaced your ticket, you will be directed to the temporary Membership Office area to obtain a one-day pass. • Minor children are not required to have tickets but should arrive at the synagogue with their parents. Children who come without their parents will have to go through the temporary Membership Office to be admitted. • Full-time students are not required to have tickets but must have a current student ID and picture ID. Students should go to the temporary Membership Office to be admitted. • Our security team will be monitoring all bags coming into the building and the bags will be subject to search by our officers. Please understand this is not to invade your privacy, but to ensure our safety. • Please do not leave bags (backpacks, purses, diaper bags, etc.) unattended. They will be considered a security risk and will be removed. • Luggage will not be permitted in our building. For those visitors who have traveled to join our congregation this year, please make arrangements to leave your luggage somewhere other than our building. • When not inside services and in the immediate areas outside the Freedman/Levit Sanctuary, J.B. Greenfield Chapel, Stein Hall, and Barg Sanctuary, please be respectful of those who are inside praying. Please keep quiet, as the noise level quickly builds and interferes with those praying in services. • Please pay attention to the service start times on your tickets. For security control, doors to the synagogue will not be opened until one hour before the start of services. • Parking spaces inside the fence perimeter will be restricted and are assigned to qualified individuals prior to the holidays. These spaces are for our handicap community and other pre-assigned vehicles.

5780/2019 HIGH HOLY DAY FAMILY CHOIR If you have ever considered being part of the Family choir, this is definitely the year to do it. There are significant changes being made and it is always fun to be part of something new. Through the years the family choir has grown to include parents and children and will participate in services in the Freedman/Levit Sanctuary. This year again, the Freedman/ Levit Contemporary High Holy Day service will be led by Rabbi Sarah Fort and myself with Judy Yambra leading the choir, but only on Erev Rosh Hashanah, September 29 and Kol Nidre, October 8. The day time service will change and the Family Choir will lead the congregation in Barg at different times during the day, both on Rosh Hashanah, September 30 and Yom Kippur, October 9. In addition, the choir will also be an integral part of the teenage Mincha service later in the afternoon on Yom Kippur day in the Barg Sanctuary. Typically, we meet for 1 ½ hours on Sundays and 1 hour on weekdays. Most of the rehearsals will take place in Stein Hall. You will be notified of changes and we will confirm all rehearsals by email after the first rehearsal.

Please remember, if you see something, say something. We are a growing community and the best thing we can do is to stay alert and be aware of our surroundings. We have numerous officers on-site who are always ready and willing to check out any situation in which you have safety and security concerns.

High Holy Day Experiences! TEEN PROGRAMS 6th – 12th graders are invited to their own High Holy Day programming, featuring thought-provoking conversations, interactive activities, snacks on Rosh Hashanah, and giveaways. There will be separate sessions for middle schoolers and high schoolers, giving you a time to reflect, connect, and engage with the themes of the High Holy Days with friends. Led by Rabbinical Student Kevin Lefkowitz and CBY Program Associate Sarah Goldberg. HHD PRESCHOOL FUN While parents are in services, our youngest members can enjoy High Holy Day games, snacks, and activities under trained supervision GRADE SCHOOL SERVICE A fun service just for our elementary school children and their families, led by Rabbi Sarah Fort and guest musician Joe Buchanan. Lasting about an hour, this newly designed service is interactive, full of energy, and will provide a meaningful, spiritual experience. WELCOME CART AND BASKETS A variety of items that will help make the time spent in services more enjoyable and meaningful for anyone in need of additional audio, visual, and/or sensory support. These will be available at all services. INCLUSION SERVICE A sensory sensative Rosh Hashanah Family service, led by Rabbi Sarah Fort, designed to be meaningful, joyous and relaxed! For those members who plan to make regular monthly payments, we have established a procedure for ACH (Automatic Clearing House) payments. B’nai Mitzvah Daphne Alexandra Kaufman (September 6-7) is the daughter of Amy and Jeff Kaufman; sister of Ian; granddaughter of Barry and Annette Kaufman of West Bloomfield, Michigan, and the late David and Michele Kantor. Daphne is a seventh grader at Pin Oak Middle School where she is on the POMS Crew dance team and she performs in Advanced Theatre. For her Mitzvah Project, Daphne volunteered at Undies for Everyone. Daphne will be donating a portion of her monetary gifts to the Lewy Body Dementia Association and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Asher Cade Deutsch (September 1314) is the son of of Jennifer Deutsch and Dr. Allen Deutsch; brother of Lila Deutsch and Hayden Deutsch; grandson of Marsha and Marty Block of Houston, Texas; and Frieda and David Deutsch of Lake Worth, Florida. Daniel is a seventh grader at The Emery Weiner School. For his Mitzvah Project, Daniel plans to donate to Camp Say of Say.org, a charity close to his heart, for supporting, educating, empowering children who stutter to lead normal lives, as well as send them to summer camp. Daniel will be donating new baseballs to children in need, as well as sending softballs to the 10U Softball championship team in Puerto Rico. For his mitzvah project, Andrew assembled snack packs, for those in need, that will be distributed by SEARCH’s mobile outreach team in Houston. He is also collecting used tennis balls and will be donating them to the Zina Garrison Academy to give children of all demographics the ability to play the sport of tennis which Andrew is so passionate about. Andrew will participate in the Rabbi’s 10% plan by donating a portion of his monetary gifts to charity.
