leave us unsatisfied or bewildered. And so back we go, time after time, to the same place, not because the food is so sensational but because “it feels so good, why go elsewhere.”

But many of us are stuck on the same page concerning matters of far greater importance: Maybe we’re in a job that gives us little satisfaction and perhaps inadequate compensation, but we stay where we are because we’re afraid to take chances and venture out.

Maybe our lives are in a rut — we find ourselves doing the same things over and over, week in and week out — and we’re afraid to try something new or go some place different.

Maybe our relationship with God and the Jewish community has been stagnant, and we’d like to develop a deeper and richer spiritual life but we’re afraid of what others might think or say.

Yes, it’s often easiest to stay on the same page where “it feels so good, why go elsewhere.”

The High Holy Days are approaching. We may come for “Kol Nidre,” but powerful as that prayer may be, it’s vital that we not stay on that same page for long, but move forward. And so doing, we will experience a wealth of emotions and insights that will challenge and inspire us from one page to the next.

May this holiday season push us to move forward in life, to bring our realities closer to our dreams, and enable this new year to be one of both sweetness and fulfillment and growth.

From the Rabbi Rabbi David Rosen Reb Zussya There is a story told about Reb Zussya, who was sitting and studying the Talmud.

His students once looked over his shoulders and saw him studying a certain page of the Gemara. The next day they saw their Rabbi was studying the identical page. The following week they saw him on the same page still!

It bothered them and they finally questioned him.

“How come you are still on the same page?!” To which Reb Zussya responded, “It feels so good here, why should I go elsewhere?”

Interestingly, rabbinic legend ascribes great erudition to Reb Zussya. But like many of us, he reached a point in his life where it was easier to study the same page over and over and not move on to new challenges and opportunities.

For some of us, it may mean doing something as innocent as always eating at the same restaurant. We know the menu so well — what’s good, what’s not so good — and we fear that a different restaurant might

Sarah Goldberg joins CBY staff Congregation Beth Yeshurun is excited to welcome Sarah Goldberg as the new Youth Programming Coordinator. Sarah will work to engage our congregation’s youth in creative Judaic and social programming designed just for them.

Growing up outside Philadelphia, Sarah attended Camp Ramah in the Poconos and was a staff member for five years. She moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University where she studied psychology and Jewish studies. After working in New Orleans for a few years, she relocated to Houston last September. In addition to her role at CBY, Sarah is also the Field Engagement Associate for the Southwest Region of USY (SWUSY) where she supports local chapters and regional programming. Sarah is very excited to get to know the kids and teens of Beth Yeshurun!

Marcia & Irv Wishnow 65th Wedding Anniversary

Simcha Tree

Marcia and Dr. Ir v Wishnow celebrated their 65 th wedding anniversary with a Simcha Tree Leaf.

Congregation Beth Yeshurun has been a large part of their lives and they wanted to share their many blessings with the synagogue.

Irv’s parents, Nathan and Tillie Wishnow, were members of Adath Yeshurun before it merged with Beth El to become CBY. Irv and Marcia married in 1952 and then moved to Chicago, where Irv entered the Illinois College of Optometry.

Marcia began working as a secretary for Rabbi Morton Berman at Congregation Isaiah Israel. She was privileged to meet future Prime Minister of Israel, Golda Meir, when Meir was visiting Rabbi Berman.

After Irv graduated, the Wishnows returned to Houston, began raising their family and became involved with CBY. Irv helped Rabbi Malev form the CBY Usher Corps. He has been the Chief Usher for the High Holy Days and Israel Bond Drive ever since. He has served on the Board of Trustees and was an active member of the Men’s Club.

Marcia has been a long time member of Sisterhood. She designed and painted the 24 needlepoints located in the hall adjacent to Stein Hall.

Together, the Wishnows chaired the Annual Dinner honoring Cantor George Wagner. They have been honored themselves by the State of Israel Bonds with The Israel Unity Award.

The Wishnows feel blessed to have wonderful children: Michael, Nathan, Dr. Daniel and his wife, Karan; and grandchildren Ryan and Lauren. All their sons attended Sunday School, Hebrew School, and were Bar Mitzvah at CBY. Irv and Marcia have also been active in serving the community. Irv has been an active member of the Houston Westbury Lions Club. He has served as President of his club, President of the Lions Eye Bank, Founding President of the Lions Foundation for Sight at the Baylor College of Medicine and the Lions Eye Bank Association of Texas. In 1982-83 he was elected Lions District Governor. He has been inducted into the Lions District Hall of Fame, and the Lions State Hall of Fame.

In 1998, he founded the Eye Care for Kids Foundation as a 501©3 nonprofit organization that provides free eye exams and glasses to low income, uninsured children. In 2008, the Wishnows went to Washington D.C. to receive The American Public Health Association Award for the outstanding project in vision care. They also received a personal letter of congratulations along with a donation from President Bush.

Irv enjoys playing golf and has two holes-in-one. He shot his age when he was 78 and 81 years old. Marcia enjoys cooking, paining, sewing and reading.

Joseph Shoss, M.D. - 90th Birthday Dr. Joseph Shoss was surprised with a Simcha Tree Leaf in honor of his 90th birthday. The leaf was a gift from his children: Connie and Douglas Dotan, Jan and Dr. Stanford Shoss, Jeanne and Dr. Jay Rubin; grandchildren: Courtney and Greg Gerstenhaber, Julie and Reid Wade, Lindsay and Daniel Seruya, Dr. Jeffrey Shoss, Drs. Mindy and Bradley Shoss, Jessica Shoss, Dr. Brian Rubin, Robyn Rubin, and Robert Rubin; great-grandchildren: Andrew, Jack, and Molly Gerstenhaber, Madison and Mason Wade, Alyse and Evan Seruya, and Hailey Shoss.

Joseph was one of four boys born to Becky and Max Shoss in Houston. They were among the very early members of Adath Yeshurun, which later became Congregation Beth Yeshurun. Joseph finished at Rice University at the age of 17 and graduated from Baylor College of Medicine at the age of 20. He served for two years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and then returned to Houston where he practiced Pediatrics for 52 years. He was a Chief of Pediatrics at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, was a member of the honorary first staff of Texas Children’s Hospital, then became a Vice-President of the Texas Children’s General Staff, and later became a Chief of Pediatric Staff at Sharpstown General Hospital.

Joseph has been an active member at CBY, serving on the Board of Trustees and participating in many other synagogue activities.

He was married for 52 years to Ann Gelman Shoss, who was very active in Sisterhood and synagogue life. Ann passed away in 2001.

Her needlepoint of Adam and Eve hangs in the synagogue hallway today. Ann and Joseph raised three children, and celebrated their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, weddings, and many other simchas at CBY. In 2004, Joseph married again in a ceremony at CBY. He and Constance have spent thirteen years together, with Joseph inheriting three more children, nine grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. They continue to enjoy life and many family activities and simchas, as their families continue to grow!

Family and synagogue continue to be very important to Joseph.

He feels honored to have been presented with a Simcha Tree Leaf at the 90th birthday celebration given by his three children.

B’nai Mitzvah Rachel Lily Rosenberg (September 1/2) is the daughter of Laurie and Jeff Rosenberg; brother of Jacob; granddaughter of Joan and Ron Suchar t, and Ellen and Butch Rosenberg; and great-granddaughter of Babette Weiser. Rachel attends The Emery/Weiner School. For her Mitzvah Project, Rachel decorated and assembled Shabbat Boxes for JFService to deliver to patients at Methodist Hospital. Rachel will donate a portion of her monetary gifts to the Susan G. Komen Organization and to the M.D. Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Hayden Erev Deutsch (September 8/9) is the son of Jennifer and Allen Deutsch; brother of Lila and Asher; and grandson of Marsha and Marty Block, and Frieda and David Deutsch. Hayden attends The Emery/Weiner School. For his Mitzvah Project, Hayden will donate gently used sports equipment to RBI Houston, a non-profit organization committed to helping underprivileged kids play organized sports. Hayden will also participate in the Rabbi’s 10% plan.

Raphaël Lenny Hananel (September 8/9) is the son of Natasha and Alan Hananel; brother of Benjamin and Gabriel; grandson of Jean-Claude Belaisch and the late Annie Belaisch, and Leon and Vicky Hananel. Raphaël attends The Emery/Weiner School.

For his Mitzvah Project, Raphaël regularly volunteers at the Houston Food Bank. He will donate a portion of his monetary gift to the Weizmann Institute of Science, in memory of his grandmother, Annie.

Amy Davis (September 16) is the daughter of Robin and Jordan Davis; and sister of Todd and Eric Davis.

She is a participant in Celebration Company. Amy works at Genesis Kosher Steakhouse.

This endowed chair is crucial for recruiting and retaining the highest-quality clergy for Beth Yeshurun. A strong base of clergy talent enriches our synagogue and attracts new members.

By recognizing the continued contributions of our clergy while providing funds to push the frontiers of their continuing education, the funds can propel innovative programs in order to meet the continuing and changing needs of the Congregation. The financial goal is $3 million. Your partnership and participation is vitally important to help us meet this goal.

Friends and members of Congregation Beth Yeshurun have come together to celebrate the life and career of Rabbi David Rosen. Several committees have been formed, overseen by Bruce Stein, to lead this important effort. Major community events are planned, including the special Bat Mitzvah of Amy Davis, Sunday in the Park with David: A Grand Purim Celebration, special Shabbat services and the premiere feature of B’rachot (Blessings) - an original cantata Rabbi David Rosen honoring our rabbi and our friend. The concert will take place on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at the Hobby Center. B’rachot will feature a 100 voice choir and 75 piece orchestra, led by Grand Opera Music Director, Patrick Summers, in a cantata composed by Cantor Meir Finkelstein in honor of Rabbi Rosen.

High Holy Days seating The Ushering Committee requests your help regarding the “saving of seats.” Fire ordinances prohibit the blocking of aisles, doorways or hallways. To comply with this ordinance, we ask the members who are standing along the side and back walls of the Pulaski-Rauch Auditorium to either be seated or go to one of the other services in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel, Stein Hall Museum Minyan or Freedman-Levit Sanctuary.

Please hold only one seat per adult for no more than one hour after services begin. After one hour, no seats should be held. People receiving an honor who will be on the pulpit, please ask an usher for a “Reserved” sign. If you are aware of an empty seat, please raise your hand to let the ushers know.

High Holy Days greeters needed

High Holy Days greeters are needed for Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah (Day I), Early Kol Nidre, Late Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur Day services. Greeters welcome members and guests and also help our Security Officers identify those who may not belong at our services. Each greeter will work one 90 minute slot beginning one hour before a service. There will be one 15 minute training session. Please email your name, phone number and the service you can work to security@bethyeshurun. org or contact Misi Schlueter at 713.666.1881, ext. 373 or mschlueter@bethyeshurun.org.

Security reminder

Please be aware that our security procedures are to provide for the security and safety of our congregants and visitors. We appreciate your cooperation with these procedures.

You must have a ticket and picture ID (with the same name and address as on your ticket) to enter any of the High Holy Days services. Please have your ticket and picture ID ready to show at the door for entry into the synagogue. If you have misplaced your ticket, you will be directed to the temporary Membership Office area to obtain a one-day pass.

Minor children are not required to have tickets, but should arrive at the synagogue with their parents. Children who come without their parents will have to go through the temporary Membership Office to be admitted.

Full-time students are not required to have tickets but must have a current student ID and picture ID. Students without appropriate ID may need to go to the temporary Membership Office to be admitted.

Do not leave bags (purses, diaper bags, etc.) unattended.

They will be considered a security risk and will be removed.

Tashlich Thursday, September 21

“And they shall cast all their sins into the depths of the sea” - The Prophet Micah Join us for Tashlich service at 6:00pm Thursday, September 21st, as we walk to the nearest body of water (the bayou!), attach our sins to breadcrumbs and toss them into the “sea!” You provide the sins.

We provide the breadcrumbs, cold drinks, and delicious ice cream bars.

Which one is my High Holy Days ticket?

Your High Holy Days ticket (also called a Membership Card or High Holy Days Card) is a purple and white piece of cardstock which is tabbed on the top and bottom and scored to be folded.

The High Holy Day service schedule is printed on the back.

Bring family members to BY for the High Holy Days Did you know family members that maintain primary shul memberships at other local congregations can also join BY as a dual member and worship with you here at our High Holy Days services?

You may drop your passengers at the door, but you will probably have to use satellite parking.

A Family Guide for the High Holy Days at Congregation Beth Yeshurun 2017 The High Holy Days are a time for building family memories with our children that can last a lifetime. To help make those memories positive ones, we have developed services and programs specifically for our families with young children.

SERVICES Preschool Services

Rosh Hashanah: 9:00 – 9:40am, Thursday, September 21st Celebrate the richness of our High Holy Days in a service designed for our pre-school age children and their families. The service will involve age appropriate prayers, songs and a few surprises! The service will be led by Rabbi Sarah Fort and popular song leader, Rachel Buchman, in the Freedman-Levit Sanctuary.

HHD Freedman-Levit Choir Dear Families, Summer vacation is over and our thoughts will now turn to school and the holidays. They will be here before we know it.

This year is going to be very exciting and I am hoping that you will consider your and your child’s participation. Rabbi Strauss, Judy Yambra and I will introduce our new Assistant Rabbi, Sarah Fort, to the Freedman-Levit Contemporary service for the first time. I have met her and am certain that she will be a perfect fit for CBY and our service. I have planned a new musical surprise and as always look forward to working with you to create an inspirational and engaging service. Please remember that being a part of the choir is time limited and we will work with you to ensure your child can participate in their activities and the choir.

Our rehearsals for the HHD Family Choir for the FreedmanLevit Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services have already begun and will continue each Sunday afternoon and Wednesday night (6:30-7:30pm) until the holidays are over. Both Judy and I are sensitive to all the demands of the early school year and will work with you to guarantee a satisfying experience. Wednesday nights have been our traditional mid-week rehearsal. However, if there needs to be a change in time or day, we are open to discussing it.

It has been my goal over the years to create a service that is unique in its ability to appeal to all age groups and at the same time satisfy the needs of families. It is not a “children’s” service, but it is time constrained and makes use of music and participation to engage and encourage interaction for all who attend. The choir, made up of adults and children, has been a meaningful and enriching part of that service for the last 43 years.

The choir will participate in the Freedman-Levit service on Rosh Hashanah, September 20th and 21st, Kol Nidre, September 29th and Yom Kippur day, September 30th through Yizkor. The choir will once again be an integral part of the Teen Minhah service later in the afternoon on Yom Kippur held in the Barg Sanctuary for the entire congregation.

I hope you and/or your children will join us for what has always been a very satisfying and exciting experience for all of us involved. One of the great joys of my life has been to work with those of you who have chosen to be part of this meaningful activity. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to have you and your children join us as we prepare for the upcoming holidays.

Rabbi Sholklapper has a deep meditative practice and was trained as a Jewish mindfulness meditation teacher through the Institute for Jewish Spirituality. He loves to teach in a variety of settings including businesses, schools, nonprofits and religious organizations. Ordained at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies, he also holds an MBA in Nonprofit Management. Rabbi Sholklapper works remotely for the newest Camp Ramah located in Northern Beth Yeshurun cemeteries are open Sunday-Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm California as Director of Development and Communications. Peter Berry Peter Berry is the son of the late Joshua and Robin Berry. His topic will be his experiences at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.

Peter participated in the 2017 Maccabiah games as a member of the Wheelchair Basketball team.

Marissa Kapp Marissa Kapp is the daughter of Paula and Rodney Kapp. She will be speaking about Kehillah High.

Marissa has been actively involved for its first two years and looks forward to serving on the Kehillah High Teen Leadership Team for the upcoming year.

Noa Strauss Noa Strauss is the daughter of Rabbi Brian and Lisa Strauss.

Her topic on Yom Kippur will be her experiences at Ramah Summer Camp. Noa loves the five amazing summers she has spent at Ramah in California. She looks forward to sharing the reasons why!

Our tzedakah funds •

If you have ever put money into the “pushke” in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel, you may have wondered what happens to that money. A sub-committee of the Chapel Committee handles the distribution of these funds to a variety of worthy causes. These fall into one of four categories: (a) Projects in Israel; (b) Conservative Torah study/program institutions; (c) Youth scholarships; (d) Rabbi Horwitz Caring for the needy.

Among the projects in Israel to which we have directed help this year are: • Yad Sarah, a volunteer-run organization providing a lending library of medical equipment • Beit Noam, ALEH, and SHALVA, which provide community and residential services for people with special needs

“A Package From Home,” offering comfort and support to Israeli soldiers, particularly those with no family in Israel • “Forgotten People Fund,” giving emergency assistance to Ethiopian Israelis in economic crisis • ALYN Hospital, a rehabilitation center in Jerusalem for physically disabled children, adolescents and young adults.

To the best of my knowledge, none of these receive any funding from the Israeli government.

Thanks to all of you who have helped us provide thousands of dollars to meet these and other needs in the past year!

Handicapped parking

Approximately 100 temporary handicapped parking spaces will be added for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. There are two locations for handicapped parking – the entire Beechnut driveway and the closest section of the main parking lot. Only cars with a “handicapped” sticker or license plate are permitted to park in spaces reserved for the handicapped.

CARS WITHOUT APPROPRIATE HANDICAPPED DESIGNATION WILL BE TICKETED AND TOWED! The Beechnut entrance is the best location for dropping off persons who need assistance and cannot walk long distances.

Attendants are requested to assist disabled passengers into the synagogue through the Beechnut doors. If absolutely necessary, it is permissible to “double park” a vehicle in this area for a few minutes for this purpose only.

ANY VEHICLES ILLEGALLY PARKED IN HANDICAPPED SPACES OR IN FIRE ZONES WILL BE TOWED!

Operation Isaiah/Tikvah BBG Food Drive

In this our fourth year, Tikvah BBG will have grocery bags out in the foyers with a list of needed items for the Houston Food Bank during Rosh Hashanah. ITEMS DO NOT NEED TO BE KOSHER! Please take a bag and return it on Yom Kippur filled with the following items needed: *canned fruits in water or light syrup *whole grain macaroni, linguine, or spaghetti *canned tomatoes, no salt added or reduced sodium *canned tuna or chicken in water *canned vegetables, no salt added or reduced sodium *canned beans, no salt added or reduced sodium The Food Bank is unable to take: *open packages *homemade food *perishable foods *baby food *items with expired dates Thank you for your help and support with this important project.

Satellite parking and shuttle buses As you know, we have only a limited number of parking spaces at the synagogue. We have approval for satellite parking at the Aramco lot on Frankway and Jackwood. In addition, street parking will be limited due to ongoing construction on Frankway.

For your convenience an air-conditioned shuttle bus will make continuous rounds to the satellite parking areas to bring people to the synagogue and return them to the parking areas. These rounds begin one hour before the first service begins. Golf carts will also make rounds through the Beth Yeshurun parking lot all throughout the service times.

The buses and golf carts will operate on the first night of Rosh Hashanah, first and second days of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre, and all day on Yom Kippur.

Please note that there is NO authorized parking in the Lowes center, NO parking in the strip shopping center across Beechnut from the synagogue, NO parking in the apartment complexes across Beechnut, and NO parking in the Meyerland Professional Building. Police will use wreckers to tow any cars parked illegally in these areas.

Please do not park in front of fire hydrants or in other “no parking zones.” Your car will be towed.

Thinking Inside the Box – on Sukkot

allowing for a breeze inside – which is crucial for Houston weather. We ordered the bamboo poles roof to go with it. We have found that the roof lasts for several years before needing to be replaced.

Why build a sukkah? There are many reasons. First: It is fun! It is our chance to build something! It can be fun for the whole family, too. It is an opportunity for your children to be creative in designing decorations. You can also buy “Christmas lights” after Christmas and string them around your Sukkah for added light and color. Sukkot is described in our liturgy as “z’man simchateinu,” the “time of our Joy.” We are actually commanded to be happy on Sukkot.

Second: It’s a Mitzvah. Actually, it’s not. Not technically.

It is only a mitzvah to live in the sukkah. Living in the sukkah means eating meals out there. It also means sleeping out there (for those who like camping out – any boy scouts or girl scouts out there?). Optional activities include reading, talking, playing bridge (does anybody do that anymore?).

Anyway, since you are supposed to live in a Sukkah, it is more convenient to live in one in your own back yard.

Third: You can invite your friends to help you celebrate in your sukkah. Jewish holidays are best celebrated in groups. In our American society we tend to forget how much fun it can be to just sit around the dinner table with guests and schmooze.

Finally, because the sukkah is a temporary outdoor structure, with no air conditioning, we are reminded of the “real world” outside our artificial, man-made indoor environment. We have the opportunity to experience nature – even if only for a couple of hours a day. This in turn reminds us of the fragility and shortness of life. We read Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) on Sukkot which further emphasizes this theme. So in the midst of our joy we are reminded that life is short, and that we must make the most of it.

I cannot imagine any holiday more satisfying. Sitting under my sukkah, sipping a glass of ice tea, sharing quality time with family and friends. Isn’t life grand?

So build your own sukkah this year. And take pictures of yourselves and your guests so we can share them on our web site or in next year’s Message.

One more thing. You can also buy your own Lulav and Etrog this year by placing your order on our web or calling the office during the week.

Even as we prepare for the Days of Awe, I would like to draw our attention to the next holiday in the calendar – Sukkot. We have a tendency to slight this holiday, coming as it does, only a couple of days after Yom Kippur. We are by that time getting “holiday-ed out.” But I think that causes us to miss out on a wonderful opportunity to balance the heaviness of the Days of Awe with the joy of the “Festival of Shacks.”

Ever since we have lived in our house, my family has built our own sukkah. Of course we came to the family Sukkah dinners at Beth Yeshurun. But on the other nights, we have invited friends over to celebrate in our backyard. Of course, in addition to putting lights in our sukkah to make it bright and cheery, we also put fans in the sukkah to keep it relatively cool.

If you are handy with building projects, you can probably design your own sukkah and get the materials from Lowe’s or Home Depot. You can also do an internet search to find some simple plans to build your own. Here is one made from steel pipes: www.simplifiedbuilding.com/projects/how-to-build-your-own-diysukkah. This video shows you how to easily build one out of wood lattice you can buy at Lowe’s or Home Depot: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=2MrWmAEEAow. Once you have built your frame and walls (tarp or sheets can be used for the walls), you will need to have “schach” to put on top. The schach has to be made out of natural branches or palm fronds. Do not use branches whose leaves will wither and fall off because then your “roof” will disappear. Bamboo tubes are also kosher for schach. Here is a simple way to get schach from bamboo mats you can buy (again from Lowe’s or Home Depot): kosheronabudget.com/how-to-save-120-on-your-sukkah.

A more expensive option – one my family chose – is to buy a pre-fabricated sukkah kit which has everything you need and requires only an hour to assemble. Although it may seem to be initially expensive, we have used our sukkah for more than 10 years. Here are six web sites that sell pre-fab sukkah kits: www. leiterssukkah.com/index.htm, www.siegersukkah.com, www.sukkot.com, https://sukkahcompany.com, www.sukkah.com/index.cfm and www. sukkahworld.com.
