Dear Members of our Beloved Community,
It is with deep respect and appreciation that I write to honor our beloved Rabbi Jack Segal and his devoted Toby. Throughout their years of dedicated service to our community, they have touched countless lives with their wisdom, compassion, and unwavering commitment to Jewish values and traditions.
Rabbi Jack Segal has been a spiritual leader and mentor, guiding us through times of joy and sorrow with wise counsel and inspiring teachings. His tireless efforts to strengthen our community, build bridges with other faiths, and promote egalitarian values have earned him the respect and admiration of all who know him.
Likewise, Toby has been a source of strength and inspiration. Her warm and welcoming spirit, boundless energy and enthusiasm, and unwavering support for her husband and our community have made her an integral part of our congregational family.
I know we are all filled with gratitude for all they have given us. They have been an enduring presence in our lives, and their legacy will continue to inspire and guide us for generations.
On behalf of the entire community, I offer our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Toby and Rabbi Jack Segal for their lifelong dedication to Congregation Beth Yeshurun. We wish them both health, happiness, and fulfillment in all their future endeavors, and we look forward to continuing to benefit from their wisdom and guidance in the years to come.
With love and respect,
Rabbi Brian Strauss

MAZEL TOV Toby & Rabbi Jack Segal
I am so honored to be the President of Congregation Beth Yeshurun for this momentous occasion.
Rabbi Segal- you and your family have been a major part of my life, well, ever since I was born. You were the Rabbi at my Bar Mitzvah, my teacher for confirmation, and officiated at my wedding to my beautiful wife Andrea. You have taken both my parents and grandparents on Astro trips to Israel. I vividly remember Sunday mornings coming to TNT-SOS-VIP and not just learning and praying but hoping to win one of your raffle prizes as well. We have shared many life cycle events together both sweet and bittersweet.
With Toby by your side, ever stylish and with her warm and welcoming smile, you Jack became an inspirational leader for the synagogue. You were on call 24/7 to be at the side of your congregants always guiding and caring for all of us.
To say you have been a major part of the history of Beth Yeshurun would be an understatement. To put it in your words – you have been stupendous! I could not think of anyone more deserving to be honored than you and your family.
Mazel Tov to you and Toby and on behalf of Congregation Beth Yeshurun, thank you for all you have done and continue to do.
With m pect,
David Stein, President
Toby and Jack,
Thank you for being our teachers and our friends!

To Rabbi Segal, my friend, my Rav,
Tonight, it is my great pleasure to wish you a happy 94th birthday, which will take place just a few weeks from now – and to celebrate with our entire congregation your extraordinary rabbinate and life!
with a strange “accent” immediately captured everyone’s –
Rosens and Segals, 2003
In 1964, when I was only 14 years old, you were introduced to me and my USY friends as the new young assistant rabbi at Beth Yeshurun. We all liked what we saw: a tall, youthful rabbi with jet-black hair, who talked fast with a strange “accent” that immediately captured everyone’s attention – and kept it for the next 58 years. I could never have imagined then that, 32 years later, in 1996, I would be the new young rabbi who would follow you as Senior Rabbi of Congregation Beth Yeshurun, and you would be the Rabbi Emeritus for the duration of my career.
what it means to truly love one’s congregation. I saw how you could put big smiles
Rosens and Segals, 2003
Clearly, you have been an extraordinary influence in my life. I learned from you what it means to truly love one’s congregation. I saw how you could put big smiles on the saddest faces, and how you appreciated that, when a congregant needed you, it meant now, not later. And I learned, too, about courage from the pulpit in your willingness to never shy away from hard topics, but to always speak up when you felt there was something important to be said.
eshet hayil
And by your side all these many years has been Toby, a genuine eshet hayil, who has enriched your rabbinate from the first day you came to Houston with her own warmth, caring and kindness towards all. Toby has surely been a treasure to you, Jack, and a remarkable gift to everyone at Beth Yeshurun.
B’shalom,
You have been blessed with the proverbial length of years, and you have clearly used them wisely and well. May you continue to do so and, with your beloved Toby by your side, may you continue to enjoy good health and great joy every day, in every way!
B’shalom
, Rabbi David B. Rosen

When someone is at the center of as many life cycle events in your family as Rabbi Segal was for ours, he is considered family. That is the way we feel about Rabbi Segal and his beautiful Toby. The older we get, the more we understand that it takes amazing skills to work in a community for as many years as Jack Segal and still be loved and well regarded by so many different kinds of people. We also respect Toby for sharing him with all of us for all these years, too.
We wish you much more joy and the rewards of a loving family and grandchildren. We still have so much more to learn from you.

TOBY AND RABBI JACK SEGAL
It has been such an honor to be a congregant at Beth Yeshurun with you at the helm and, over the past few decades, in your emeritus role. Your outstanding service to our community and our synagogue has not gone unnoticed. You are people of your word who have been there for everyone who calls upon you. Your legacy at Beth Yeshurun is unparalleled in its depth and it is with the most sincere gratitude and appreciation and that we thank you for all that you have done for our shul, and for our Family.

Rabbi Segal and Toby,
It was with great pride and pleasure that I served as President of Congregation Beth Yeshurun during your last two years as Senior Rabbi. It’s hard to believe that it was 29 years ago that you officially retired after 32 “tireless” years of service.
My family and the entire congregation are excited to celebrate with you once again. Thank you for all your kindness, thoughtfulness, knowledge and spiritual leadership.
May G-d bless you and Toby and the Segal Family for years to come!!
With Much Love and Appreciation, Steve

For our entire lives, you have been there and guided us through every life cycle event. You were such an important part of my parents, Leon & Zelda Herzog’s, life at Beth Yeshurun.
TNT/SOS/VIP and Junior Congregation help mold me into the Jew I am today. You married us 41 years ago and presided over our daughters’ (Allie and Meg) namings. Under your watch, ESP services brought our families together, every Friday evening, at Beth Yeshurun and then at the Shabbat table.
Thank you for being such an influential part of our lives. You have made us better people and Jews.

Dear Rabbi and Toby,
The contribution the two of you have made to congregation Beth Yeshurun since you first arrived has left an indelible mark on the families with whom you interacted and the institution itself. Toby, you were ever present, with your beautiful smile and calm demeanor. It served as an inspiration to all who were juggling jobs, busy lives and small children and showed that we could make time in our own lives for the various levels of synagogue life. You were there for sisterhood meetings, services, school PTO meetings and every event. You were exemplary in all that you did.
Rabbi, you paved a path for many of us to follow and taught us the value of a Jewish life, service and commitment. Your vision to grow the synagogue and involve the congregants in its rituals took all of us on an important journey. You understood the importance of relationships with congregants of all ages, from the youngest in our schools to the most elderly. You are the personification of what a Rabbi is meant to be; a source of inspiration, a teacher, a person of the highest integrity and a person of the Torah. Everyday you actually lived what you taught and still do. As a result we are better for knowing you.
The two of you educated the congregation by your example. In Proverbs we are taught, “He who acquires knowledge without imparting it to others is like a flower in the desert where there is no one to enjoy it”
Thank you and Mazal Tov from both our families. This recognition is long overdue, and aptly demonstrates the legacy you have given the synagogue and the esteem in which you are held.
With deep friendship, love and admiration, Kenny Horwitz and Annette

Our friendship began in August of 1966 and has ripened in the passage of time. You have each been inspirational to us and to the community in a multiplicity of ways. You have been there for us on happy occasions but also when we needed support and encouragement. Your marriage and the relationship which you enjoy with your children and grandchildren continue to be a model for all who know the two of you. It has been a privilege to call you “Rabbi” and “cherished friends” over the decades. We thank the Good Lord for your blessing of long life and pray that you will each know many more years of vibrancy, strength and good health. Thank you for all of the Solomonic gifts which you have bestowed upon us and upon the greater community. We celebrate the example of your lives which will be a blessing and guidepost for generations to come. We join with the entire Congregation in thanking you for enhancing each of our lives and making this world a far better place.
Our love and devotion always,

Rabbi Segal, you always found the right Judaica message for the right person to do the right thing at the right time: While walking along a road, a sage saw a man planting a carob tree. He asked him: “How long will it take for this tree to bear fruit?” “Seventy years,” replied the man. The sage then asked: “Are you so healthy a man that you expect to live that length of time and eat its fruit?” The man answered: “I found a fruitful world, because my ancestors planted it for me. Likewise I am planting for my children.”
Talmud Ta’anit 23a
Not only are we grateful for your indomitable derech eretz for tikkun, but we also so appreciate that you have always done this so capably with open hands and an open heart. In the bible, 60 means support, the idealism of harmonious fulfilment, and rest. Thank you Toby, Rabbi Segal and family for your 60 wonderful years of support, fulfilment, service, sehol, scholarship, and the shalom you brought to so many. We love you!

Thank you, Toby and Rabbi Jack Segal, for your leadership and devotion to Congregation Beth Yeshurun for so many years.
When Carl and I were looking at synagogues, Jack’s willingness to take a stand on issues that were important to him and the community was very refreshing and drew us to Beth Yeshurun. Over the years, through sadness and joy, I have never regretted that decision.
Toby, you are truly a woman of valor, and one of the kindest people I have had the pleasure of knowing.
Best wishes through whatever lies ahead; may you enjoy your family, friends and congregants in good health.
