Every Jew deserves a place to they can pray on High Holidays. The clergy, board, and Inclusion Committee felt strongly how important it is to continue to make Beth Yeshurun a place that more people can have a spiritual experience on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—regardless of visual, auditory, or sensory needs.

I would like to acknowledge the many organizations and people who took time to brainstorm with me about the service (and provide reassurance!): Song Leader Boot Camp, Matan, USCJ, Jamie Weiner from Celebration Company, Caren Brown; Rachel Zuckman; some of our own member families; the Inclusion Committee; Joe Buchanan for providing wonderful music and soul; Alan Levin for gabbaiing; and a huge thank you to Richard Kammerman for liaising with Celebration Company, arranging honors, sponsoring the Celebration Company Honey-Less Cake for kiddush, and also ensuring the Welcome Cart and Baskets were provided for.

Part of that effort meant making the services that already offered (Barg, Freedman Levit, Chapel and Museum) more accessible to more congregants. So each service had a Welcome Cart or Welcome Basket with items like magnifying cards and assisted listening devices, weighted lap pads and noise-dampening headphones, visual and tactile stimulation objects. Strong like a Lion

If you look at the very beginning of the Shulchan Arukh, Joseph Karo’s 16th century standard code of Jewish law, it tells you how you ought to get up in the morning: “One should be strong like a lion and arise in the morning to serve his Creator.”

I hate to admit it, but “strong like a lion” doesn’t exactly describe the opening of my day. I don’t roar at the face which looks back at me in the mirror; in fact, it takes me a little while just to get to the mirror. Sometimes it takes a few splashes of water before I remember what I’m supposed to do next. (I am even more grouchy when the bathroom sink doesn’t work.) Rabbi Horwitz

For this act, there is a blessing which is deferred to the morning service. We praise God ha-ma’avir sheinah mei-einai u’tenumah mei-afapai, Who removes sleep from my eyes and slumber from my eyelids. And the use of two expressions for sleep, rather than one, may be for those of us who take twice as long to get going. But the original practice was to say this berakha when washing one’s face.

KOL RINAH returns Friday night, October 12! Join us in the Greenfield Chapel at 6:30 P.M. for a Friday night service filled with joyful song and spirit, followed by a communal Shabbat dinner and a presentation by Rabbi Danny Horwitz on “Jewish Views of the Afterlife”. Shabbat dinner is $10 for CBY members and $15 for nonmembers; ask about our reduced rates for children and let us know if you need babysitting during the program! Dinner reservations guaranteed if made by Friday, October 5.

Levi Miles Finkelman (October 19/20) is the son of Haley and Alan Finkelman; grandson of Wolf and Ruth Finkelman (both of blessed memory) and Laverna (of blessed memory) and Dwayne Miles; brother of David, Josh, Adam, Jonathan (of blessed memory), Noah and Mia; brother-in-law of Jennifer and Paige and Uncle to Margo. Levi is in 7th grade at The Emery Weiner School. For his mitzvah project, he volunteered with The Periwinkle Foundation which provides summer camp opportunities for children undergoing treatments for cancer and other life-threatening illnesses at Texas Children’s Hospital. Levi will become a Bar Mitzvah at his home-away-from home, Camp Young Judaea Texas. He will donate a portion of his monetary gifts to The Periwinkle Foundation and to Camp Young Judaea Texas.

B’nai Mitzvah

Talia Jae Schwartz (October 5/6) is the daughter of Rachel Kosoy and David Schwartz; the sister of Jacob Schwartz; the granddaughter of Margie and Jerry Kosoy and Judy and Rafi Schwartz. Talia attends Pin Oak Middle School. For her Mitzvah project, Talia participated in The Mitzvah Volunteer Program (MVP) with the Friendship Circle of Houston, where she learned more about and took steps towards building a community that includes all people, including those with disabilities. Walter Levi Garrett (October 12/13) is the son of Jamie and Bryan Garrett; brother of Jillian; grandson of Joy, of blessed memory, and Buman Ginsberg, and Mary and Jack, of blessed memory, Garrett. Walter is an 8th grader at The Emery / Weiner School. For his mitzvah project, Walter has collected gently used baseball equipment which he has donated to the Puerto Rican Little League Foundation. He has allocated a portion of his gifts to purchase new uniforms and equipment for the entire Puerto Rican 10U Little League Team for their international competitions. Lindsey Nicole Karkowsky (October 19/20) is the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth Karkowsky; sister of Ryan Karkowsky; and the granddaughter of Jay, of blessed memory, and Gerry Karkowsky, Janie Shoss, and Roger and Peggy Shoss. Lindsey is a seventh grader at The Kinkaid School. Lindsey loves to play sports, is an avid softball player and also plays on a tournament team. For her mitzvah projects, she volunteered at TUTS’ The River helping children and teenagers with differences in a performing arts camp. She also volunteered weekly as a Challenger Buddy with the West U Little League assisting kids with mental and physical disabilities who are given the chance to play baseball despite their limitations. Lindsey will donate a portion of her monetary gifts to a charity of her choice. She will share her simcha and have a B’nai Mitzvah with her cousin Tyler Karkowsky. Tyler Mintz Karkowsky (October 19/20) is the son of Laurie and Ronnie Karkowsky; brother of Austin, Max and Madeline; and grandson of Margie and Sandy Mintz and Gerry and Jay z’l Karkowsky. Tyler attends The Kinkaid School. For Tyler’s Mitzvah Project, he is honoring a child from the Holocaust through Remember Us and volunteers at West University Challenger helping children participate in baseball. He will be participating in the Rabbi’s ten percent plan by giving a portion of his monetary gifts to the West University Challenger in honor of his Grandfather, Jay Karkowsky.

Edward Nathan Kalmin (October 26/27) is the son of Amy and Murray Kalmin; brother of Sophie and Nathan Kalmin; and grandson of Lorraine Luskey and the late Edward Luskey, Barbara Goldfield, Jack and Marcy Goldfield and Barry and Phyllis Kalmin. Eddie attends the Emery Weiner School. For his Mitzvah Project, Eddie assembled “Nosh” bags through JFS for patients in the waiting room of MD Anderson Cancer Center. And because of his love for animals, he also volunteered his time with the aniMeals on Wheels program through Interfaith Ministries. Eddie will donate a portion of his monetary gifts to charity. Evan Mark Melman (October 26/27) is the son of Samantha and Gil Melman; brother of Noah and Rachel; granddaughter of Gloria and Dan Lampl (z’l) and Jerry and Tsipora Melman. Evan attends The Emery Weiner School. For his mitzvah project, Evan has been volunteering with The Woods Project, an organization whose mission is to create wilderness education and exploration experiences that develop critical behaviors needed for disadvantaged students to achieve success in school and life. Evan will participate in the Rabbi’s 10% Plan and donate a portion of his monetary gifts to The Woods Project. Evan is sharing his bar mitzvah with his good friend Eddie Kalmin.

Alan Ryan (October 27) is the son of Sue Aaronson and Mike Ryan; grandson of Paula and Irving Pozmantier and nephew of David and Lisa Aaronson and Kathy and Curzio Cotta. Alan is a freshman at Bellaire High School. For his Mitzvah Project, Alan intends to assist with rocking babies at Texas Children’s Hospital. He will also donate a portion of his monetary gifts to Texas Children’s Hospital.

Ava Jolie Cotta (October 27) is the daughter of Kathy and Curzio Cotta; sister of Mia Hope Cotta. She is the granddaughter of Paula & Irving Pozmantier and Jolanda and Achille Cotta of Quartino, Switzerland, and the late Alan & Harriet Aaronson. Ava is a 7th grade student at the Emery Weiner School. For her Mitzvah project, Ava’s love of all things animals, and compassion for the homeless and abused ones, has inspired her to collect supplies and donate a portion of her monetary gifts to the animal shelters at the SPCA.

Meet the Teachers

Religious School students, parents, teachers, and teen madrichim met for Meet the Teachers on Sunday morning, August 26. Students had the opportunity to visit their classrooms with their parents, and they completed an All About Me sheet for the teacher to learn more about them. Following the classroom visits, all gathered in Reiches for some Rosh Hashanah themed activities. Students reflected on Shehecheyanu moments they experienced over the past year; they wrote down their wish for the upcoming year; and all enjoyed apples and honey. It was nice having the opportunity to visit after the summer, and we look forward to a great year together in Religious School!

Yom Kippur 2018 Jews by Choice

One of the many wonderful parts of Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s High Holy Day services are the special speakers we have on Yom Kippur. We received so many comments on how thoughtprovoking and inspirational our Jews by Coice speakers have been over the years. We want to thank this year’s speakers, Janet Jackson and Linda Vega! Janet Jackson is a native Houstonian and recently celebrated her 46th anniversary with her husband Tom McCulloch. Her history with Beth Yeshurun goes back over 50 years. She shared her story about her conversion last year, a day before Hurricane Harvey hit Houston. Linda Vega was born and raised in South Texas. She is the mother of two boys and is an immigration attorney living in Houston, Texas. She is currently working on her Master's Program in Jewish Education from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, Israel. 11

Youth Mental Health First Aid

for adults working or caring for youth ages 12-18

Sometimes, first aid isn’t a bandage, or CPR, or the Heimlich, or calling 911.

YOU!

Someone you know could be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis. You can help them. You are more likely to encounter someone — friend, family member, student, neighbor, or member of the community — in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack. Mental Health First Aid teaches a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to individuals showing signs of a mental illness or in a crisis, and connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social, or self-help care.

Sometimes, the best first aid is you. Take the course, save a life, strengthen our community.
