thing they were not was clean! Even so, I wondered if perhaps they were clean enough. After all, the water had been warm and the agitator had really agitated. Perhaps the clothes had not been so dirty after all. Perhaps the merits of laundry detergent had been grossly overstated. But, alas, a quick examination of the clothes showed that my hopes were misplaced. All the shoving around my clothes had endured had done nothing to clean them. The spots remained almost as vividly-colored as before. I had to rewash the clothes as Kenmore correctly insisted I should have done in the first place. ***** In a few short days, we Jews will pour into our synagogues for our annual spiritual cleansing. We will sort through our clothes and dress handsomely and beautifully. We will come and go into and out of our synagogues many times, and we will repeatedly sit and stand throughout lengthy services. And yet for all the “agitation,” if we do not apply the necessary ingredients for proper cleansing, we will end up finishing the High Holy Days just as “soiled” as we began them. We need to do more than go through the motions; we need to do real scrubbing. We need to not only hear the prayers chanted by our cantors, but assimilate the melodies and the messages into our souls. The High Holy Days are not a question of being there; they are a question of becoming there—of becoming different, of being transformed and changed so that we can become better human beings, better husbands and wives, better parents and children, better neighbors and co-workers, better Jews. In Ecclesiastes we read: “May your garments always be white.” In the end, we all know that there is only one way for that to happen, whether we are whitening our clothes—or our souls. Shanah Tovah.

I like to think that I’m reasonably intelligent, but occasionally I do things that make me wonder. A few months ago, for example, we bought a new washing machine. My wife considers a washing machine to be just that—a device for washing clothes. She had only one question when the new machine was installed: How do I turn it on? But I’m a putterer. I needed to stand over the machine and read the whole manual so I could understand all the neat features, read all the warnings, and become sensitized to the ins-and-outs of sorting clothes. Not surprisingly, it was I who dutifully ran the first load, carefully placing clothes of the proper color and quality into the basin, selecting the proper cycle and number of rinses, and then delicately turning the knob until the water came pouring forth. It was most gratifying to hear the agitator agitating and the water obediently rushing in and out. Indeed, it was only when I excitedly began removing the washed clothes from the machine did I suddenly realize one slight omission: I had forgotten to add laundry detergent! Sam Kaminsky
Aryeh Gruber is the son of Manizeh Mirza-Gruber and Nelson Gruber. He is a Senior at Bellaire High School. He is honored to speak about his experiences at Kehillah High as he has been a teen Ambassador as well as a founding member.
Sam Kaminsky is the son of Neal and Jill Kaminsky. He attends The Emery/Weiner School. Sam’s topic is BBYO. He is a Loeb Chapter member and the Shaliach for the Lone Star Region of BBYO.
Rachel Melman Rachel Melman is the daughter of Samantha and Gil Melman. She attends Pin Oak Middle School. Rachel will speak about the impact Camp Ramah has had on her life and how it has contributed to her Jewish identity.

The Ushering Committee requests your help regarding the “saving of seats.” Fire ordinances prohibit the blocking of aisles, doorways or hallways. To comply with this ordinance, we ask the members who are standing along the side and back walls of the Pulaski Rauch Auditorium to either be seated or go to one of the other services in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel, Stein Hall Museum Minyan or Freedman-Levit Sanctuary. Please hold only one seat per adult for no more than one hour after services begin. After one hour, no seats should be held. “And they shall cast all their sins into the depths of the sea” - The Prophet Micah Join us for Tashlich as we walk to the nearest body of water (the bayou!), attach our sins to breadcrumbs and toss them into the “sea!” You provide the sins. We provide the breadcrumbs, cold drinks, and delicious ice cream bars.

Greenfield Chapel & BYB tefillin drive
Now’s your chance to do a mitzvah! The Greenfield Chapel is conducting a tefillin collection campaign. Perhaps you have a set of tefillin that is no longer being used. We need them! tefillin are very costly and our rabbis frequently receive requests from families who may have difficulty purchasing them. We also need to increase the supply of loaner tefillin in the Chapel. Boxes for collecting tefillin are located in both Beth Yeshurun lobbies. Be sure to include your name and address so we can ackowlege your donation. We aslo need cash contributions to repair and refurbish the donated tefillin. Please make your check out to “BYB TEFILLIN FUND.”

Donations may also be made in the synagogue office or by mail to Congregation Beth Yeshurun, 4525 Beechnut, Houston, TX 77096-1801. A minimum donation of $10 per listing is required to have your donation published in the weekly bulletin and a notification letter sent to the honoree or a deceased person’s family member. One such notification letter will be sent per donation. The deadline for donations to be published in the weekly bulletin is the previous Friday at 4:30pm. Donations are published upon submission and will not be “held” for future publication. When you make a donation to Beth Yeshurun, please be sure to provide all of the necessary information: who the donation is in memory of, who or what the donation is in honor of, who needs to be notified of the donation (name and complete address) and by whom the donation is given. When this information is incomplete, we are unable to process your donation efficiently. Donations with no specific fund indicated will be credited to the Synagogue General Fund. HHD by online streaming or telephone Handicapped parking Beth Yeshurun will once again provide Live Streaming of our High Holy Day services through the generosity of Nancy and Arthur Brand and family, and Gilda and Warren Sprung and family in memory of their parents: A.I. and Manet Schepps and Allen Brand. Also, through the kindness and generosity of Norma Kost (z’l) and her children, Karen and Cecil Kost and Fredell and Martin Belasco, and in memory of Nathan Kost, we are happy to allow those unable to come to the synagogue to listen to High Holy Day services by telephone. All transmissions will be from the Barg Sanctuary as follows: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Oct. 2: 6:00-7:15pm Rosh Hashanah I, Oct. 3: 8:30am-12:30pm Rosh Hashanah II, Oct. 4: 8:30am-12:30pm Kol Nidre, Oct. 11: 6:00-8:00pm Yom Kippur, Oct. 12: 9:30am- through the final blast of the shofar at 7:19pm
Approximately 100 temporary handicapped parking spaces will be added for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. There are two locations for handicapped parking – the entire Beechnut driveway and the closest section of the main parking lot. Only cars with a “handicapped” sticker or license plate are permitted to park in spaces reserved for the handicapped. CARS WITHOUT APPROPRIATE HANDICAPPED DESIGNATION WILL BE TICKETED AND TOWED! The Beechnut entrance is the best location for dropping off persons who need assistance and cannot walk long distances. Attendants are requested to assist disabled passengers into the synagogue through the Beechnut doors. If absolutely necessary, it is permissible to “double park” a vehicle in this area for a few minutes for this purpose only. ANY VEHICLES ILLEGALLY PARKED IN HANDICAPPED SPACES OR IN FIRE ZONES WILL BE TOWED!

Please be aware that our security procedures are to provide for the security and safety of our congregants and visitors. We appreciate your cooperation with these procedures. You must have a ticket and picture ID (with the same name and address as on your ticket) to enter any of the High Holy Days services. Please have your ticket and picture ID ready to show at the door for entry into the synagogue. If you have misplaced your ticket, you will be directed to the temporary Membership Office area to obtain a one-day pass. Minor children are not required to have tickets, but should arrive at the synagogue with their parents. Children who come without their parents will have to go through the temporary Membership Office to be admitted. Full-time students are not required to have tickets but must have a current student ID and picture ID. Students without appropriate ID may need to go to the temporary Membership Office to be admitted. Do not leave bags (purses, diaper bags, etc.) unattended. They will be considered a security risk and will be removed.
Satellite parking and shuttle buses As you know, we have only a limited number of parking spaces at the synagogue. We have approval for satellite parking at the Aramco lot on Frankway and Jackwood. In addition, street parking will be limited due to ongoing construction on Frankway. For your convenience an air-conditioned shuttle bus will make continuous rounds to the satellite parking areas to bring people to the synagogue and return them to the parking areas. These rounds begin one hour before the first service begins. Golf carts will also make rounds through the Beth Yeshurun parking lot all throughout the service times. The buses and golf carts will operate on the first night of Rosh Hashanah, first and second days of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre, and all day on Yom Kippur. Please note that there is NO authorized parking in the Lowes center, NO parking in the strip shopping center across Beechnut from the synagogue, NO parking in the apartment complexes across Beechnut, and NO parking in the Meyerland Professional Building. Police will use wreckers to tow any cars parked illegally in these areas. Please do not park in front of fire hydrants or in other “no parking zones.” Your car will be towed.

Please pay attention to the service start times on your tickets. For security control, doors to the synagogue will not be opened until one hour before the start of services. The doors will be opened for High Holy Day services according to the following time schedule: 5:00pm on the first night of Rosh Hashanah – Oct. 2 7:30am on Rosh Hashanah days I and II – Oct. 3 - 4 5:00pm for Kol Nidre – Oct. 11 8:00am for Yom Kippur morning – Oct. 12 Remember that if you arrive late, all the parking spaces on synagogue property – regular and handicapped – will already be taken. You may drop your passengers at the door, but you will probably have to use satellite parking.

The service will involve age appropriate prayers, songs and a few surprises! The service will be led by Rabbi Brian Strauss and popular song leader, Rachel Buchman in the Freedman-Levit Sanctuary.

Betty Gorme to receive Veshanatom Levanecha Award I think we all know that there is an inner connection between music and the spirit. When words fail to engage us, when our inner selves long for something touching and emotional, we turn to music. Music is what draws us to each other, what connects us to other generations, what motivates us to overcome enormous challenges and ultimately lifts us spiritually and religiously. Those who are talented with the gift of music and are willing to share it unselfishly with all around them, deserve our thanks, our gratitude and our admiration. Such a person is Betty Gorme, who will be the 2016 recipient of the Veshanatom Levanecha (You Shall Teach Your Children) Award that is given annually at the Freedman/Levit High Holy Day Service. Betty was born in Navasota, TX and moved to Houston when she was two years old. She began her musical career after watching a summer camp counselor play the accordion and returned home to begin learning the accordion at The Musical Center, a large Houston music school. She was 10 years old. There was a piano in her home so she began to learn to play that as well. By the time she was a high schooler at San Jacinto, she was already playing in various school programs on the accordion and served also as the piano accompanist for chorus class. Beth Yeshurun has been the grateful beneficiary of Betty’s talent and generosity for more than 50 years. She has
accompanied our Cantors, our children, our volunteers and provided untold hours of musical inspiration through programs for the Sisterhood, the Men’s Club, YES Group, Annual Meetings and The Gathering Place. For 14 years, Betty worked for BYDS and Hebrew School with Dora Lee Grinberg as Betty Gorme the children’s accompanist for all of their programs and services and for the past 37 years, Betty has accompanied Annette Sondock and the Family High Holy Day Choir in the Freedman/Levit High Holy Day Service. Betty also brought her talents to the other synagogues and temples in Houston and throughout Texas and numerous organizations in Houston and around the country. When we seek to express or evoke emotion we turn to music. Goethe said, “Words are the language of the mind, music is the language of the soul.” Over the years Betty has continually touched the heart and soul of Beth Yeshurun. It is our honor and pleasure to thank her for that unique experience and her years of service with this award.

It has 1,000 leaves, 6 smaller boulders and 6 larger boulders. It is a collection of special events and remembrances. Leaves or boulders may be given in honor of any special occasion such as: Births, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Weddings, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Graduations, any occasion worthy of the title Simcha. Those persons honored by a leaf will be acknowledged in The Message and receive a special certificate. Each leaf is $600, small boulders are $1,800 and large boulders are $2,400. Not quite the end of the holidays
It’s a Mitzvah
Imagine you’ve spent a whole day in synagogue on Yom Kippur, and many hours on Rosh Hashanah. If you’re really committed, you’ve spent hours more there on Sukkot (not to mention Shabbat services). And now, here comes the LONGEST WEEKDAY service of the year. Rabbi Horwitz What would you do? Most people would say: thanks, I’ve had enough synagogue lately. But you should see it. This year, that day is Sunday, October 23rd, the last day of Sukkot, also known as Hoshanah Rabbah...beginning at 8:00 A.M. Leave plenty of time; treat it as if it were a full holiday service, which in many ways it is! (And breakfast will follow.) What’s special about Hoshanah Rabbah, and why does it take more time? It has much content and pageantry: Hallel, Torah reading, Musaf prayers (because it is during Sukkot), and an expanded service with lulav and etrog. On other Sukkot weekdays, we make one procession with lulav and etrog; on the seventh day, we make seven; hence the name Hoshanah Rabbah, the “great,” expanded service when we ask for God’s help in the still new year. But what makes it so meaningful? Hoshanah Rabbah is the finale of the High Holiday season, the “last chance” for a rewrite, an appeal of the decree sealed on Yom Kippur. Because of this, many musical elements from the Days of Awe are heard again this morning; the leader again wears the white kittel. Additionally, one ritual takes place only on this day: the beating of willow branches. For some, it indicates dependence on the rain which brings these unadorned leaves into being; for others, it represents the desire to drive away sin and “the falling away of the sparks of judgment.” At a certain point, following the penitential period, we have to drop the focus on judgment. More importantly, the repeated processions around the Chapel may lead to something we don’t usually have in services: a brand of sensory overload, perhaps an expanded consciousness. The Hoshanah service feels like an extension of Neilah, and its conclusion like the Tekiah Gedolah after Yom Kippur. For me, this yearly moment touches on the mystery of our existence in a way few rituals do. We build up to it by including elements from throughout the year: High Holidays, Festivals, ideas with which our siddur confronts us daily. What would religion be without that confrontation with mystery? I believe my life is richer, my sense of higher realms expanded, my appreciation for Judaism deeper, because of one morning, one peak moment each year. Join us that morning and see. What’s Happening in the William S. Malev Schools for Religious Studies Teen Madrichim in Religious School
Kehillah High Kicks Off Second Year Teens had the opportunity to “Dip Into Kehillah High” at a kickoff held at Congregation Beth Israel in early September. The evening’s activities were led by Kehillah High Director, Danielle Alexander, and the Teen Leadership Team. Snacks went with the dipping theme for the evening, with a highlight of Dippin’ Dots for all. Students signed up for first trimester classes and received Kehillah High t-shirts at the end of the evening. Kehillah High is a multi-denominational partnership with Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Beth Yeshurun, and Congregation Brith Shalom, partly funded by the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston and Houston Jewish Community Foundation. We are very fortunate to have madrichim working on Sunday mornings during Religious School. Teens volunteer or are paid to assist in various aspects of the school, including helping in the younger children’s classrooms, preparing materials, working with students individually or in small groups, and many other tasks. Since all teen madrichim must be continuing their Jewish studies at either Kehillah High, Emery/Weiner School, or Beren Academy, they are also role models for the Religious School students. We are very appreciative of their assistance!

We Are Family
GRIEF GROUP
by Gayle Kamen-Weinstein, LMSW A lesson learned once again this summer while visiting Israel is the importance of the family. Families now take on many different looks , however the connections between people is the strongest bond for each one of us. I spent time with friends in Israel and my classmates at Bar Ilan University who quickly became family to me. We celebrated Shabbat under the pomegranate tree in front of my apartment. We chanted the blessings with people from other countries that I had just met and ate challah and hummus together. While shopping the Carmel Shuk in Tel Aviv, I searched for the right gift for my grief support group back in Houston. I chose bracelets with Stars of David and Hamswas for each person in my group. These beautiful people have also become a part of my extended family. We meet once each month to share a Shabbat meal together. The divorce support group is made of several men and women who are coming together each week to support and listen to one another. They have created play dates, Men’s night out and are organizing a family Shabbat dinner together. High Holidays are approaching and to feel connected to someone is critical for those in transition or suffering loss or change within their families. Please be mindful of one another, be present and reach out to someone, who may not be ‘family” but in need of feeling a connection to another human being.
Grief Group will meet on Thursdays in October, but will return to Tuesdays in November.
